The Chinese pingfeng, a folding (折叠) screen, is an old invention and traditional Chinese furniture. Its earliest common use dates from the Han Dynasty. The pingfeng means protection from wind, showing its purpose at the very beginning.
As time passes, it has been made into different sizes with colourful paintings. On screens a dragon usually appears. It stands for nobility (高贵) and power. The peacock, a beautiful bird, can be seen on screens, too. It’s a symbol (象征) of everlasting (永久的) life. Beautiful flowers mean good luck. If the daughter and her father were glad with the young man’s poem and his looks, she might agree to marry him.
Today the pingfeng is back in fashion for its beauty and its practical use as furniture. Acting as a moving wall, it can be the perfect match for modern sofas and walls, and it adds style to them.

She carefully hand-stitched (手工缝制) a Nike logo onto his old schoolbag and even added pretty flower patterns to make it look more stylish. Liu was thrilled when he saw the redone (翻新的) bag. He treasured it not only because it looked cool, but also because it was made with love. As he grew older, he understood more deeply how much effort and care his mother had put into the gift.
Recently, Liu found a photo of the schoolbag on his phone and shared the story on social media. The photo quickly received over 10 million likes. Even Nike noticed the story and left a comment praising his mother’s skill. They said they would send her a gift.
This story reminds us that the best presents aren’t the most expensive ones, but those made with sincerity and love. Parental love is the most valuable treasure in our lives, and we should always be thankful for it.

Jane Goodall, the world-famous primatologist (灵长类动物学家) and conservationist (环保主义者), passed away at the age of 91 on October 1, 2025, in California, US, while on a speaking tour.
Born in London in 1934, Goodall developed a deep love for animals as a child. In 1960, at 26, she traveled to Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park (贡贝溪国家公园) to study chimpanzees (黑猩猩)—even without formal scientific training. Her patience finally paid off: she became the first person to observe chimps making tools, such as using twigs to “fish” for termites (白蚁). This discovery changed humanity’s understanding of animals, as tool-making was once believed to be a skill unique to humans. Over the next 60 years, Goodall’s research uncovered more fascinating facts about chimps: they have different personalities, experience emotions like joy and sadness, and form strong family bonds.
Goodall’s legacy will live on forever. She has inspired millions of people around the world, especially young women, to care for nature and wildlife. As she once said, “Hope is the only way to keep going when things seem dark.”
50. Which is NOT true about Jane Goodall?
A. She was an American primatologist and conservationist.
B. She didn’t get formal scientific training when she was young.
C. She found many important facts about chimps in her life.
D. She was a woman with patience and hope.
51. Why is the discovery of chimpanzees making tools important?
A. It showed that chimpanzees can learn skills from humans.
B. It made Jane Goodall the most famous primatologist in the world.
C. It broke the idea that only humans could make tools.
D. It led to the creation of more protected areas for chimpanzees.
52. What can we learn from Jane Goodall’s quote “Hope is the only way to keep going when things seem dark”?
A. We should give up on environmental protection when facing difficulties.
B. Scientific research will always be successful if we have hope.
C. Young people must work for protecting wildlife.
D. Optimism (乐观) is necessary to keep working on nature conservation (保护).
【答案】50. A 51. C 52. D
根据第二段“Born in London in 1934, Goodall developed a deep love for animals as a child.”可知,她是英国人,而非美国人,因此选项A描述错误。故选A。
【51题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“This discovery changed humanity’s understanding of animals, as tool-making was once believed to be a skill unique to humans.”可知,这一发现改变了人类对动物的理解,因为工具制造曾被认为是人类独有的技能。故选C。
【52题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“She has inspired millions of people around the world. especially young women, to care for nature and wildlife. As she once said, ‘Hope is the only way to keep going when things seem dark.’”可知,引语强调在困境中时,希望是持续前进的动力,因此选项D“乐观是继续从事自然保护工作的必要因素”最贴合引语的核心含义。故选D。

One spring day, there was a beautiful rose in a forest. She greeted her neighbors, including a cactus (仙人掌), an apple tree and other plants. Then, she said to the cactus, “I’m the most beautiful flower here, but you are full of thorns (刺) and so ugly!”
Day after day, the rose never stopped being unkind to the cactus. The cactus, however, never got sad or angry. Instead, he always calmly said, “All lives have meaning.”
As summer came, it was hot and dry. The rose began to weaken, but the cactus grew well. He had a wide root system (根系) and was good at storing water in his body.
One day, the rose saw a bird make a small hole in the cactus with its beak (喙). The thirsty bird drank the water inside the cactus through the hole.
“It must hurt,” said the rose.
“Yes,” the apple tree said, “but the cactus doesn’t want to see his bird friend in trouble.”
The rose was so thirsty that she asked the cactus for water. He kindly agreed. The bird filled its beak with water and watered the rose’s roots.
The rose was quite sorry for what she had said to the cactus in the past. From then on, she understood that a kind heart is far more important than a good look.

【55题详解】
这是一个开放性问题,答案可根据文章内容得出。根据最后一段“From then on, she understood that a kind heart is far more important than a good look.”可知,玫瑰从仙人掌那里学到了善良的心比外表更重要。故填(She learned) a kind heart is far more important than a good look.

Lots of people like to choose them as a popular design of the pingfeng. All the designs carry people’s beautiful wishes.
Behind the pingfeng lies an interesting story. In the past, the unmarried daughter of a rich family couldn’t be seen by men except her father, brothers or very close cousins. When an admirer (仰慕者) paid a visit, however, she might take a secret look at him from a screen behind. Her father would discuss poems with the young man and ask him to create one. If the daughter and her father were glad with the young man’s poem and his looks, she might agree to marry him.
Today the pingfeng is back in fashion for its beauty and its practical use as furniture. Acting as a moving wall, it can be the perfect match for modern sofas and walls, and it adds style to them.

A heartwarming story about a mother’s love has recently gone viral online, touching millions of people’s hearts. It is a beautiful testament (证明) to a mother’s love for her child.
Liu, a young man from Shaanxi, shared his story on the Internet. When he was in junior high school, he really wanted a Nike schoolbag like his classmates. But his family couldn’t afford one at that time. Instead of letting him feel sad, his mother—who had learned sewing since she was 16—decided to make him a special one. She carefully hand-stitched (手工缝制) a Nike logo onto his old schoolbag and even added pretty flower patterns to make it look more stylish. Liu was thrilled when he saw the redone (翻新的) bag.
