UNIT 4 Friends forever Ⅰ. You can move your ugly car up now!” The silver-haired driver behind me in a fancy truck rudely yelled at me.Without much thought, I yelled back at the man, “What? Are you in a rush or something?” I was waiting in line at the drive-through to order our breakfast on a Sunday morning. There were only 12 inches or so between me and the car in front of me.There were also three additional cars in front of that one.We were getting nowhere fast. What was he hoping to gain by yelling at me? I wanted to let my own anger go after this ridiculous exchange. But the more I thought about it, the angrier I got.I was angry that he yelled at a mother in front of two kids.My daughter and my son were both confused and saddened by what they had just witnessed. We were on our way to a soccer tournament, and we had a bonus day free from school and work.Probably, there was nothing in the world to be upset about. Then this man let his anger out. I told my kids I was so mad that I had to roll my window up so that I wouldn’t keep yelling at this guy. Then, I stopped and looked back.I had moved up the 12 or so inches at his “suggestion”, while he hadn’t moved an inch.Suddenly, I felt sympathy for him.He must have been suffering in some way.As my kids and I slowly made our way to the pickup window to pay for our order, I had an idea. “I heard how rude that man was to you, and I wanted to apologize to you for having to put up with that.He isn’t worth paying for,” the cashier said to me.“My kids support me in doing that,” I answered the cashier, adding that hate cannot drive out hate. 1.Why was the driver angry with the author?( ) A.Her car cut in. C.She paid for the driver’s food. D.She gave the cashier some advice. 4.What does the author intend to convey in the text?( ) A.Respond to hate with kindness. B.Deal with a man as he deals with you. C.Put distance between your car and another. D.Never go to the drive-through at rush hours. B (2025·八省联考)Want to learn a new language or get A’s in college exams? Previous studies have shown that exercise can help stimulate the areas of the brain that convert(转换)new information into long-term memory.A new study has taken this information one step further and found the best time when exercise can help maximize learning. Building upon past research that found exercise releases biochemicals that improve mental function, scientists at Radboud University and the University of Edinburgh conducted a study to determine when exercise was most beneficial to learning. Participants — 72 healthy male and female adults — were first asked to perform a computer test that challenged their visual and spatial learning. After the test, all of the subjects watched nature documentaries, but two-thirds of them also exercised.Half of the exercisers did circuit training on an exercise bike for 35 minutes immediately after the test. The other half did the same exercise but not until four hours after they had been tested. Two days later, all of the participants returned to the lab for a recall test, and they were connected to MRI (磁共振成像) machines to assess their brain activity. The participants who exercised four hours after taking the computer test were able to recall what they had learned most accurately.Their brainwaves also showed more consistent levels of activity, indicating that their brains were less taxed to remember what they had learned. According to this research, the best time to exercise to improve learning is four hours after studying. But why? That’s one question the researchers have yet to answer.Another question left unanswered is the level of exercise that might best improve learning.I’ve run enough marathons to prove the fact that my brain is anything but sharp during or after a tough workout. But the researchers noted that light workouts might not give the brain enough of a biochemical boost to improve learning. 5.What did the new study aim to explore? ( ) A.When exercise is best for learning. B.What biochemicals are good for health. C.How brainwaves should be measured. D.Which area of the brain is the most active. 6.What were all the participants asked to do during the experiment? ( ) A.Train on bicycles. B.Do mathematics exercises. C.Play computer games. D.Watch films about nature. 7.Why did the participants return to the lab two days later? ( ) A.To do a medical examination. B.To have their memory tested. C.To get their workouts recorded. D.To finish their previous tasks. 8.What might the author’s marathon running prove? ( ) A.The findings of the study are reliable. B.Long-distance runners are often smart. C.Studies on the marathon are not enough. D.Hard exercise may not sharpen the brain. Ⅱ.阅读七选五 (2025·杭州模拟)Finding an insect in your food can be a moment of horror that kills the mood and your appetite immediately. But that might be about to change.9.( ) The market research predicts the global market for edible (可食用的) insects will grow sharply. So what’s behind this expected increase in appetite for insects? 10.( ) And the answer lies in understanding how insects compare to other food types in terms of production and farming. Insects produce less harmful gas than most mainstream farm animals per kilo of live weight.A cow, for example, produces 2.8 kg of greenhouse gas per kilo of live body weight.Insects, on the other hand, produce just 2 grams.11.( ) For each kilo it weighs, a cow needs 10 kg of feed.Insects, on the other hand, need just 1.7 kg. Water, which is becoming an increasingly rare resource in some parts of the world and is used liberally in intensive (密集的) farming, offers another interesting comparison. To produce a single gram of insect protein, you’d need 23 litres of water.12.( ) But to get that same gram of protein from cattle, you’d need 112 litres of water. 13.( ) Compared with raising traditional livestock (家畜) such as sheep, pigs or cattle, farming insects generally means that there will be no more dealing with mud and dirt and an end to changing heavy bags of feed. And forget about having to go outdoors in all weather conditions to manhandle livestock. The requirement for investment in equipment will be different, too. This will be farming on a much smaller scale, reducing the need for large and expensive machinery. It may not be too long before we can all buy a bag of edible insects at our local grocery store. A.That might sound like a lot. B.There are a number of factors in play. C.Possibly, we’ll soon be voluntarily enjoying insects. D.Insects weigh much less than traditional farm animals. E.For farmers, raising insects can be much easier and save money. F.The majority of individuals have a strong dislike for insects. G.They also consume fewer resources than traditional livestock. Hey, lady! You can move your ugly car up now! A new study has taken this information one step further and found the best time when exercise can help maximize learning. After the test, all of the subjects watched nature documentaries可知,在这项实验中,所有参与者都被要求观看自然纪录片。 Two days later, all of the participants returned to the lab for a recall test可知,参与实验者两天后回到实验室是为了进行记忆效果测试(测试对所观看的自然纪录片的记忆效果)。 I’ve run enough marathons to prove the fact that my brain is anything but sharp during or after a tough workout.
