A few years ago, Adina Lichtman was handing out sandwiches on the streets of New York City to help people experiencing homelessness. One man, grateful for the sandwich, approached her and offered a surprising idea.
“It’s great that you’re giving out sandwiches,” he said, “but one thing we really need is socks, especially as winter approaches.”
“Here I was, sandwiches in hand, thinking I knew the best way to help people,” Lichtman said. “It was a powerful lesson, and I wanted to put it into action.”
She began that night, with a simple step: going door-to-door on the floor of her dormitory (宿舍) at New York University, asking her classmates if they could each just donate (捐赠) just one pair of their own socks to someone experiencing homelessness. She got 40 pairs of socks in a single night, from a single floor. The next morning she opened her door to find a lot of socks that other people had donated.
That morning officially kicked off Knock Knock, Give a Sock (KKGS), a new nonprofit (非营利的) organization that has now provided over 350,000 pairs of socks to the homeless across America. To date, over 50 colleges and high schools across the US have joined KKGS over the years.
“While many people donate clothing, 9 out of every 10 clothing donors have never donated socks. On top of that, people who are trying to donate socks often find it difficult to donate used socks,” she says. “KKGS is one of the only organizations that collects used socks. We have volunteers knocking on doors of their classmates in school, of their workmates at work, and even of their neighbors.”
But, whether you’re 26 or 62, you don’t need to wait to organize your own sock drive, collect socks, or even wash and clean some of your own to donate to your local shelter (收容所), or someone in need who you meet on the street.
24. How did the homeless man’s words affect Lichtman?
A. They caused her to start KKGS.
B. They pushed her to go to college.
C. They encouraged her to house the homeless.
D. They made her continue to give out sandwiches.
25. How did Lichtman’s classmates react to her request for donation?
A. Some refused it politely. B. They strongly supported it.
C. Some felt quite surprised by it. D. They considered it unreasonable.
26. In what way is KKGS special?
A. It has earned a lot of money from students. B. It employs college students as volunteers.
C. It provides socks for those in need. D. It was set up by the government.
27 What advice does the author offer to people?
A. Take action in small ways. B. Start your own organization.
C. Make donations from an early age. D. Find creative ways to help people.
C
My first piece of advice to people who want to start getting fit is: don’t buy an exercise bike. People who buy them usually use them for a week or so and then forget about them. The bikes are useful if they are often used but you need to be determined (有决心的). Most people will find it much easier to go for a jog (慢跑) around the park.
As well as being easy to do, jogging is also quite cheap compared to most other sports. You don’ t need to buy expensive clothes if you’ re just going running around the park or on the beach. There is one thing, however, that you will have to spend time and money on, and that’s your running shoes. Remember that you are looking for something that will support your feet and protect you from injury. They can be expensive, but if they are of good quality they will last you a long time. Ifs always best to get expert advice, and the best place for that is a sports shop.
As for jogging, the secret is to start slowly, and not to do too much at the beginning — especially if you haven’t had any exercise for a long time. Try a mixture of walking and running for ten minutes about three times a week at first. Once you are happy doing that you can then start to increase the amount (数量) you do gradually. After a few months you should hope to be able to run at a reasonable speed for twenty minutes three or four times a week.
It’s important that you feel comfortable with whatever you do. If you do, you’ll start to enjoy it and will probably keep doing it. If it makes you feel uncomfortable, you'll probably stop after a short time and return to your bad habits. Remember that training too hard is not very effective. Research has shown that somebody who exercises twice as long or twice as hard as another person doesn't become twice as fit.
28. What is the authors opinion on the exercise bike?
A. It is unaffordable for most people. B. It is easy to learn for most people.
C. It is a helper for most people. D. It is a waste for most people.
29. According to the author, what is very important for a jogger?
A. Listening lo expert advice. B. Keeping on jogging ever)-day.
C. Having a pair of good jogging shoes. D. Running for twenty minutes each time.
30. What does the author mainly explain in Paragraph 3?
A. Why it is easy to go for a jog. B. What kind of sport jogging is.
C. How to go jogging in a right way. D. When is the best time to go for a jog.
31. What do we know from the last paragraph?
A. Good exercises stop bad habits.
B. A partner helps a lot in exercise.
C. Feeling good keeps one's exercise going.
D. The more you exercise, the fitter you will be.

Earthquake rescue robots have experienced their final tests in Beijing.Their designers say with these robots, rescuers will be able to buy more time to save lives during an earthquake.
This robot looking like a helicopter,is called the detector-bot.It’s about 4 meters long, and it took about 4 years to develop the model. Its main functions are to collect information from the air,and send goods of up to 30 kilos to people trapped by an earthquake.

This robot has a different function—it can change as the environment changes. Its main job is to search for any signs of life in places where human rescuers are unable to go.
As well as a detector (探测器) that finds victims and detects poisonous gas,a camera is placed in the 40 centimeters long robot, which can work in the dark.
Another use for the rescuers is the supply bot. With its 10-meter-long pipe, people who are trapped in the ruins, will be able to get supplies including oxygen and liquids.
Experts have said that the robots will enter production, and serve as part of the national earthquake rescue team as soon as next year.

27. What advice does the author offer to people?
A. Take action in small ways. B. Start your own organization.
C. Make donations from an early age. D. Find creative ways to help people.
【答案】24. A 25. B 26. C 27. A
根据第三段中的“It was a powerful lesson, and I wanted to put it into action.(这是一个强有力的教训,我想把它付诸行动)”及第五段中的“That morning officially kicked off Knock Knock, Give a Sock (KKGS), a new nonprofit organization that has now provided over 350,000 pairs of socks to the homeless across America.(那天早上Knock Knock, Give a Sock(KKGS)正式开始了, 这是一个新的非营利组织,现在已经向全美无家可归的人提供了超过35万双袜子)”可知,流浪汉的话给了她启示将“赠送袜子”这个想法付诸行动,即创立了非盈利组织:Knock Knock, Give a Sock。故选A。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“She got 40 pairs of socks in a single night, from a single floor. The next morning she opened her door to find a lot of socks that other people had donated.(她一晚上就从一层楼里得到了40双袜子。第二天早上,她打开门发现了很多别人捐赠的袜子)”可知,很多同学都捐出了袜子,她的同学给与了她大力的支持。故选B。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“While many people donate clothing, 9 out of every 10 clothing donors have never donated socks. On top of that, people who are trying to donate socks often find it difficult to donate used socks (虽然很多人捐衣服,但每10个衣服捐赠者中就有9个从未捐过袜子。最重要的是,试图捐赠袜子的人往往发现很难捐赠二手袜子)”及“KKGS is one of the only organizations that collects used socks.( KKGS是唯一一个收集二手袜子的组织)”可推知,KKGS的特别之处在于它为那些需要的人提供袜子。故选C。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“But, whether you’re 26 or 62, you don’t need to wait to organize your own sock drive, collect socks, or even wash and clean some of your own to donate to your local shelter (收容所), or someone in need who you meet on the street..(但是,无论你是26岁还是62岁,你都不需要等着组织自己的袜子募捐活动,收集袜子,甚至洗干净一些你自己的袜子捐给当地的庇护所,或者在街上遇到需要帮助的人)”可知,在作者看来无论年龄大小,无需等待,从募捐袜子这样的小事开始帮助别人。由此推知,作者给人们提供的建议是“从小事做起”。故选A。

【答案】28. D 29. C 30. C 31. C

【29题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第二段“There is one thing, however, that you will have to spend time and money on, and that’s your running shoes.(然而,有一样东西你必须花费时间和金钱,那就是你的跑鞋)”可知,作者认为一双好的跑鞋对于慢跑非常重要。故选C项。

【31题详解】
细节理解题。由文章最后一段“It’s important that you feel comfortable with whatever you do. If you do, you'll start to enjoy it and will probably keep doing it. If it makes you feel uncomfortable, you'll probably stop after a short time and return to your bad habits.(不管你做什么,都要让自己感到舒服,这很重要。如果你这样做,你会开始享受它,并可能会持续做下去。如果这让你觉得不舒服,你可能会在短时间内停下来,回到你的坏习惯)”可知,一个人感觉到舒适的话,他就会持续锻炼下去。故选C项。
