The first week of September was a week that I had been expecting all summer. I didn’t want summer to end, but I was eager to go to high school for my first week.
When I got to school on the morning of the first day, I realized how large the school was and how many students went there. I ended up in the wrong classroom because of the size of the school. And then a kind senior showed up and guided me to my classroom before I was late. I was happy to see that in a class of unfamiliar faces, the only open seat was next to my good friend, Jimmy. My science teacher seemed like a good teacher.
After finishing four periods, I didn’t feel too bad. However, the fifth period changed everything. I didn’t feel ready after all. My literature teacher is Mr. Smith. He told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this term. I love reading and writing, but come on, 40 ESSAYS? AP-level books? Now I was anxious.
The courses in high school seem like they’re going to get much harder, but they haven’t yet. Even though my classes look hard, they look really exciting too.
The first week passed quickly. Although a lot of things were overwhelming (令人不知所措的) : the size of the campus, the crowds and the seniors, having a totally different experience that I had never had before was really exciting.
Now, I’m really happy about high school. I have lots of friends in my classes, I really like my teachers and I’m meeting new people.

A strong 7.9 earthquake hit central Myanmar on March 28,2025, causing major damage in the area. The earthquake was centered near Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city. The number of deaths has reached 2,719, with 4,521 people injured and many more still missing. The disaster unfolded in two phases: the first earthquake destroyed buildings, roads, and bridges, while aftershocks continued to cause problems.
The earthquake happened along the Sagaing Fault, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates (构造板块) meet. Over many years, pressure built up between the plates and finally caused this earthquake. However, Myanmar’s old buildings, especially traditional ones made of wood and mud, were not strong enough to withstand the earthquake, which made the situation even worse.
Countries around the world quickly sent help. China was one of the first to respond, sending rescue teams with medical supplies, shelter materials, and special equipment to find survivors. India, Russia, and Singapore also sent aid. The United Nations helped organize the aid efforts, showing that the world is united in helping Myanmar.
However, rescuers faced many challenges. Roads and bridges were destroyed, making it hard to get aid to remote villages. There were also power cuts and communication problems. Bad weather made things worse, as rain could cause floods and spread diseases. Additionally, ongoing conflicts (冲突) in northern Myanmar made it hard to get supplies to the affected areas, and hospitals in Mandalay were crowded with patients.
Despite the difficulties, there were also stories of hope. Local volunteers worked hard to rescue people trapped in the rubble. In Mandalay, a pregnant woman was rescued after being trapped for 50 hours. Farmers and students also adapted quickly, planting crops in temporary fields and attending classes in tents. The earthquake showed Myanmar’s weaknesses, but it also showed the strength of the people and the world’s support. As aftershocks continue, Myanmar’s people are determined to rebuild their lives and hope for a better future.
8. What do we know about the earthquake on March 28, 2025?
A. It is the strongest earthquake in history.
B. It caused minor damage to the old buildings.
C. The main quake destroyed many constructions.
D. Pressure built up between the plates in aftershocks.
9 Which of the following is NOT a reason for the difficulties in rescue efforts?
A. Negative government. B. Power failures.
C. Damaged roads. D. Communication problems.
10. Why does the author mention the story of a pregnant woman in the last paragraph?
A. To compare victims from different jobs.
B. To show the theme of hope and recovery.
C. To explain the difficulty of rescue efforts.
D. To give an example of the earthquake’s impact.
11. What's the author’s tone in writing the article?
A. Concerned. B. Doubtful. C. Critical. D. Objective.
C 9. A 10. B 11. D

It may seem hard to believe, but snacking several times a day can boost your health and fitness — exercise snacking, that is. “Exercise snacks” are short bursts of activity — 30 seconds to 5 or 10 minutes max — that include almost any type of movement. Think climbing stairs, walking, cycling, or dancing. Today, numerous studies prove these mini workouts can make a difference.
Performing 15- to 30-second exercise snacks three times daily was shown to improve cardiorespiratory (心和肺的) fitness levels and exercise performance in inactive adults, according to a small January 2022 study published in the journal Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews.
Adults who reported they didn’t work out saw a 17% to 18% reduction in cancer cases after they began doing just 3.4 to 3.6 minutes of intense (激烈的) physical activity daily, a July 2023 study of 22,398 people found. Their daily physical activity was done in bursts lasting less than one or two minutes. Hitting 4.5 minutes (in total) of intense physical activity each day was linked to a 31% to 32% lower risk of cancer, according to the study published in JAMA Oncology.
The benefits of movement extend to brain health, too. Doing even a small amount of easy to hard physical activity every day reduces your risk of dementia (痴呆), according to a March study in JAMDA: The Journal of the Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medical Association.
Exercise snacks are a favorite tool used by Dr. Supatra Tovar, owner of Dr. Supatra Tovar & amp; Associates. “I’m a big proponent of behavior change that starts tiny,” Tovar said. “So I like to create behaviors with my clients that are easy, achievable and doable every day of the week.”
“Your body is kind of lazy,” said Michael Betts, a personal trainer and director at Train Fitness who’s based in London. “Doing these little exercise snacks reminds your body that it does need to work to maintain and improve its overall function.”
12. What can be called an exercise snack according to the text?
A. Singing songs with your classmates.
B. Turning off the lights before leaving school.
C. Jogging without stopping for 20 minutes in PE class.
D. Rushing from your classroom to the dining hall for lunch.
13. What is a benefit that exercise snacks bring according to the text?
A. Lowering cancer risk.
B. Improving muscle strength.
C. Keeping people away from dementia.
D. Increasing the heart rate of inactive adults.
14. What does the underlined word “proponent” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A. Coach. B. Judge. C. Leader. D. Supporter.
15. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To compare different types of exercise.
B. To encourage short bursts of physical activity.
C. To show some studies about mini workouts.
D. To stress the importance of daily exercise.
D 13. A 14. D 15. B

根据第一段中““Exercise snacks” are short bursts of activity — 30 seconds to 5 or 10 minutes max — that include almost any type of movement. Think climbing stairs, walking, cycling, or dancing.
根据第三段中“Adults who reported they didn’t work out saw a 17% to 18% reduction in cancer cases after they began doing just 3.4 to 3.6 minutes of intense (激烈的) physical activity daily, a July 2023 study of 22,398 people found. (2023年7月一项对22398人的研究发现,那些报告自己不锻炼的成年人,在开始每天仅进行3.4到3.6分钟的剧烈运动后,癌症病例减少了17%到18%)”可知,运动零食可以降低癌症风险。故选A项。
Supatra Tovar的话“I’m a big proponent of behavior change that starts tiny (我是行为改变的坚定proponent,这种改变从微小之处开始)”和“So I like to create behaviors with my clients that are easy, achievable and doable every day of the week. (所以我喜欢和我的客户一起创造一些简单、可行、每周每天都能做到的行为)”可知,Dr. Supatra Tovar支持从微小之处开始改变行为,并喜欢创造简单、可行、每天都能做到的行为,说明他是“运动零食”的支持者。故划线词proponent的意思是“支持者”,与D项“Supporter”意思一致。故选D项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,结合第一段中“It may seem hard to believe, but snacking several times a day can boost your health and fitness — exercise snacking, that is. (“运动零食”是短时间的活动爆发——最长30秒到5或10分钟——几乎包括任何类型的运动)”可知,文章主要介绍了“运动零食”这一概念,即短时间、高强度的体育活动,并阐述了其对健康的多方面益处,旨在鼓励人们进行短时间的体育活动。故选B项。

Now I’m really happy about high school.

A To compare victims from different jobs.
B. To show the theme of hope and recovery.
C. To explain the difficulty of rescue efforts.
D. To give an example of the earthquake’s impact.
11. What's the author’s tone in writing the article?

A. Coach. B. Judge. C. Leader. D. Supporter.

A. To compare different types of exercise.
B. To encourage short bursts of physical activity.
C. To show some studies about mini workouts.
