In my late 40s, I noticed a gradual change in my personality. The adventurous spirit that once defined me — the woman who traveled solo across South America—had slowly been replaced by a more cautious (谨慎的) version of myself. I began choosing safer options, booking package holidays instead of planning my own adventures, and feeling torn between different tasks. Life felt increasingly smaller, governed by worry and what-ifs.
Around age 47, this change became more pronounced. I started experiencing low mood, brain fog, and anxiety. It felt like I was weighed down by the physical conditions. Though therapy (治疗) helped somewhat, I had quietly accepted that this version of myself was simply who I was now.
Then, almost on impulse (冲动), I volunteered to work at the Glastonbury music festival—alone. The plan was to complete three eight-hour bar shifts in exchange for a ticket. I would camp by myself and hope to make friends with other volunteers. The moment I said yes, doubt set in. Was I too old? Could I still handle bar work after more than a decade? But something in me pushed forward.
Arriving alone was nerve-stretching, but also exciting. As I set up my tent, people greeted me. Our volunteer team included all ages, from students to people in their sixties. camping together made bonding natural, and as I slipped back into the role of my real self, my confidence grew. I realized I wasn’t too old at all — I was capable, social, and still very much in charge of my own story.
That week became a turning point. I ate meals alone, explored the festival freely, and danced with happy tears. The self-doubt that had shadowed me began to fade. I felt reconnected to my real self. And I realized there’s so much more life to live — if I choose to reach for it.
4. What was the author’s personality like in her late 40s?
A. More hesitant and indecisive. B. More adventurous and determined.
C. More sociable and confident. D. More energetic and focused.
5. What is the direct cause of the author’s personality change?
A. Past adventurous lifestyle. B. Career switching pressures.
C. Lack of social connection. D. Aging-related physical changes.
6. How did the Glastonbury experience benefit the author?
A. It offered her a new career path. B. It restored her self-belief.
C. It taught her new social skills. D. It improved her physical health.
7. What is the main lesson the author learned from her experience?
A. Personal growth can continue at any age.
B. Solo travel is the best form of self-discovery.
C. Professional help is essential during critical moments.
D. Music festivals are ideal for making new friends.
C
Arya, a six-year-old border collie (牧羊犬) in Italy, can learn a new toy’s name from just one or two mentions. Her owners say she even knows her favorite foods’ names; when pizza is on the menu, the word has to be whispered.
In the study, owners of 10 gifted dogs — primarily border collies — taught them specific words for two toy types: those used for tugging (“pulls”) and those used for fetching (“throws”).
After four weeks of training, brand-new toys that looked nothing like typical pulls or throws were introduced. This time, the dogs only experienced each toy’s function (either tugging or fetching) during play; they were not taught words for any of them. After a week of play, when asked to fetch a pull or a throw, the dogs chose the right toy two thirds of the time — well above the 12.5 percent expected by chance.
“These gifted word-learner dogs are not only able to memorize the labels of many different objects, but can also extend a familiar word to new objects that share the same function, even if they look very different,” says study lead author Claudia Fugazza, an ethologist at Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary.
Elika Bergelson, a Harvard University language scientist who was not part of the new study, says human babies “mostly rely on how things look. But by 14 months they can also use role or function — for instance, telling apart who is chasing (追逐) and who is being chased in a scene — to extend words” to new things, much like the dogs in the study did.
“Because these dogs live in families and pick up words naturally,” Fugazza says, “their parallel to early child learning could offer scientists unique possibilities to explore how language-related abilities might have developed — and how they can emerge in a nonlinguistic (非语言的) species.”
8. What did the dogs do in the second stage?
A. They learned names for brand-new toys. B. They were tested on their favorite foods.
C. They compared pulls and throws by color. D. They played with toys without word training.
9. What do we know about the study result?
A. Dogs learn faster with colorful toys. B. Dogs can learn words by playing games.
C. Border collies are the smartest dog breed. D. Dogs extend words by function rather than looks.
10. What is Elika Bergelson’s attitude towards the study’s findings?
A. Uninterested. B. Approving. C. Concerned. D. Doubtful.
11. What does the underlined word “parallel” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. A close similarity. B. An obvious threat.
C. A basic requirement. D. A hidden danger.
D
The simple act of looking at a piece of visual art can improve your wellbeing according to a new study. This simple activity helps both in hospitals and art galleries.
The research combined results from 38 earlier studies involving 6,805 people. It was done by psychologists from several universities and published in The Journal of Positive Psychology.
The study found that viewing art supports a type of happiness linked to finding meaning in life and personal growth. This benefit works in many places — not just museums and galleries, but also clinics, hospitals, and even through virtual reality. Different kinds of art, including paintings (both realistic and abstract), photography, sculpture, and installations (装置艺术), were all helpful.
The study found that viewing art can improve eudemonic wellbeing, which is wellbeing associated with meaning in life and personal growth.
“People often see art as a luxury, but our research shows that viewing art — as a hobby or a health activity — can truly support wellbeing,” said MacKenzie Trupp, the lead researcher. She added that we should see art as an easy-to-access, low-cost tool for improving mental health.
Another expert, Claire Howlin, noted that while making art has long been known to help mental health, just looking at art has been overlooked. Yet art is everywhere — in museums, hospitals, and homes. Understanding its effects can open new ways to improve wellbeing through daily contact with art.
Since 2019, the World Health Organization has recommended using art along with regular health care. Art meets people’s need for meaning, builds self-esteem (自尊), and helps form a positive identity — key factors for dealing with life’s challenges.
Health and arts groups in Europe are looking for strong evidence on which art forms work best for different health needs. This new review will help plan bigger studies in the future. The study also found that past research on the topic was inconsistent (不一致). Because of this, the team created new guidelines to help standardize future studies on art viewing and wellbeing.
12. How was the new study on art and well-being conducted?
A. By testing effects in museums. B. By interviewing thousands of artists.
C. By analyzing data from earlier studies. D. By comparing art viewing and art making.
13. How is the value of art-viewing often perceived according to the text?
A. It is underestimated and overlooked. B. It is supported by consistent evidence.
C. It varies greatly between generations. D. It is too complex to be properly studied.
14. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. Future research will focus on a specific art form.
B. The WHO’s recommendation is based on this study.
C The new guidelines have been adopted across Europe.
D. This review bridges the current need and future research.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. WHO recommends Art for Healthcare. B. A New Study on Art and Well-Being.
C. Art Viewing: An Easy Path to Well-Being. D. Art Creation: A contributor to Mental Health.

It looks like a bird’s nest!” ___17___ But in Australia, this kind of joke is actually a sign of a strong friendship. It shows that you are close enough to be completely honest with each other. ___18___
Another important part of Australian humor is self-depreciation (自嘲). This is when people make fun of themselves.

Sarcasm (讽刺) is also very common in Australia. This is when you say the opposite of what you mean, often with a very serious face. For example, a tour guide might tell a group, “On our last shark-watching trip, we started with 20 people, but only five came back. I really have no idea what happened to the other 15.” Visitors who don’t understand Australian sarcasm might get very worried and think the guide is telling the truth! ___20___ All these styles mix together to create the unique and friendly sense of humor that you find in Australia.

B. But it can sound different from one country to another.

D. Yet, it’s just a clever way to make the tour more fun and memorable.
E. However, a lot of cultural misunderstandings may arise from the jokes.

“Woof!” I pressed my finger to my lips. “Quiet, Larry!” My husband Don slept soundly beside me, but our eight-month-old Labrador mix kept barking (吠叫) into the peaceful night. I walked to the window—nothing was there, just the quiet neighborhood under the moonlight.
This wasn’t the first time Larry’s barking had woken us. Unlike other dogs, he didn’t bark at doorbells, strangers, or passing cars. His barks came unexpectedly, without any visible reason, and this worried me deeply. I was training him to become a guide dog for the blind, and unnecessary barking could end his career before it even began.
Just weeks earlier, we had returned from an amazing six-week trip across America’s national parks. Larry had been perfect throughout our adventure-quiet, and well-behaved. He had hiked through Yellowstone without making a sound. I thought he had finally overcome his barking habit.
But now, back home, the barking had returned. The worst moment came during Sunday community service. As we were doing voluntary work, Larry suddenly let out a loud “WOOF!”. Another guide dog barked back as if answering him. The residents all burst into laughter while my face burned with embarrassment.
I tried everything to stop his barking. I worked with professional trainers, but Larry never barked during the training process. It was as if he knew when to be quiet.
The difficult day finally came when I had to send Larry to advanced training. I hugged him tightly tears dampening (打湿) his golden fur. “I love you,” I whispered. “Now go show them what you can do.” Though worried, I remained hopeful.
For weeks, I received positive reports about his progress. Then came the call that changed everything. “Larry won’t become a guide dog,” the trainer said. My heart sank, but he continued,” We’ve discovered something extraordinary—he can sense medical emergencies before they happen. He’s been transferred to America’s VetDogs to look after those who suffered from seizures (癫痫).”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Later, I had a chance to visit Larry’s new owner Mark, a person with seizures.

10 What is Elika Bergelson’s attitude towards the study’s findings?
A. Uninterested. B. Approving. C. Concerned. D. Doubtful.
11. What does the underlined word “parallel” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. A close similarity. B. An obvious threat.
C. A basic requirement. D. A hidden danger.
D 9. D 10. B 11. A

根据文章第三段“This time, the dogs only experienced each toy’s function (either tugging or fetching) during play; they were not taught words for any of them. (这一次,狗只在玩耍中体验每个玩具的功能(要么拖拽,要么捡回(物体));它们没有学过它们中的任何一种)”可知,在第二阶段,狗狗们是在没有词语训练的情况下通过玩耍来熟悉玩具的。故选D。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段研究负责人的话“These gifted word-learner dogs are not only able to memorize the labels of many different objects, but can also extend a familiar word to new objects that share the same function, even if they look very different (这些有天赋的单词学习狗不仅能够记住许多不同物体的标签,而且还可以将熟悉的单词扩展到具有相同功能的新物体上,即使它们看起来非常不同)”以及第五段将狗狗与人类婴儿的对比可知,研究的关键发现是狗能通过功能而非外观来扩展词汇。
根据文章第五段“But by 14 months they can also use role or function — for instance, telling apart who is chasing (追逐) and who is being chased in a scene — to extend words” to new things, much like the dogs in the study did.(但到了14个月大的时候,它们也可以使用角色或功能——例如,在一个场景中区分谁在追谁在被追——来扩展单词“以适应新事物”,就像研究中的狗一样)”可知,Elika Bergelson引用了人类婴儿的研究发现,并将狗狗的行为与之进行类比,这表明她对该研究的发现是持认可和赞同的态度。
根据划线词所在句子“their parallel to early child learning could offer scientists unique possibilities to explore how language-related abilities might have developed — and how they can emerge in a nonlinguistic (非语言的) species.(它们与早期儿童学习的parallel可以为科学家提供独特的可能性,来探索语言相关能力是如何发展的,以及它们是如何在非语言物种中出现的)”并结合上下文语境,这些狗的生活和学习方式与人类幼儿早期学习存在“相似之处”,才能为科学家提供独特的研究可能,所以划线词parallel为“相似之处”之意。故选A。

The simple act of looking at a piece of visual art can improve your wellbeing, according to a new study.
C. The new guidelines have been adopted across Europe.
C 13. A 14. D 15. C

根据第二段“The research combined results from 38 earlier studies involving 6,805 people. (这项研究结合了之前38项涉及6805人的研究结果。)”可知,这项新研究是通过分析之前的研究数据来进行的。故选C项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段“Another expert, Claire Howlin, noted that while making art has long been known to help mental health, just looking at art has been overlooked. (另一位专家Claire Howlin指出,虽然长期以来创作艺术被认为有助于心理健康,但仅仅观看艺术却一直被忽视。)”可知,观看艺术的价值常常被低估和忽视。故选A项。
根据倒数第二段“Since 2019, the World Health Organization has recommended using art along with regular health care. (自2019年以来,世界卫生组织建议在定期医疗保健的同时使用艺术。)”和最后一段“Health and arts groups in Europe are looking for strong evidence on which art forms work best for different health needs. This new review will help plan bigger studies in the future. The study also found that past research on the topic was inconsistent (不一致). Because of this, the team created new guidelines to help standardize future studies on art viewing and wellbeing.
根据第一段“The simple act of looking at a piece of visual art can improve your wellbeing, according to a new study. (一项新的研究表明,简单地看一件视觉艺术作品就能改善你的幸福感。)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要介绍了观赏艺术作品可以提升幸福感,且这种益处广泛适用于各种环境和艺术形式,因此“Art Viewing: An Easy Path to Well-Being (观赏艺术:通往幸福的简单之路)”作为标题最合适。故选C项。

Humor is a feeling that everyone in the world understands. ___16___ A perfect place to see this is Australia, where people have a very special and funny way of joking.
In Australia, friends often make fun of each other to share a laugh and feel more relaxed. For instance, someone might say to a friend, “What happened to your hair? It looks like a bird’s nest!” ___17___ But in Australia, this kind of joke is actually a sign of a strong friendship. It shows that you are close enough to be completely honest with each other. ___18___
Another important part of Australian humor is self-depreciation (自嘲). This is when people make fun of themselves.
An Australian might say something like, “When I sing, it sounds like two cats having a fight on the street.” They enjoy sharing their own silly mistakes or things they are not good at. ___19___ This makes other people feel more comfortable around them. Some think this style of humor comes from Australia’s early history, where people wanted to show that everyone is equal, and no one is better than anyone else.
A. Lighten the mood by having jokes with others.
B. But it can sound different from one country to another.
C. Usually, the friend will just laugh, appreciating the honest joke.
D. Yet, it’s just a clever way to make the tour more fun and memorable.
E. However, a lot of cultural misunderstandings may arise from the jokes.
F. By laughing at themselves, they show that they don’t think they’re perfect.
G. In many other different places, a comment like this might hurt someone’s feelings.
B 17. G 18. C 19. F 20. D

根据上文“Humor is a feeling that everyone in the world understands. (幽默是一种全世界每个人都能理解的情感。)”可知,前文强调幽默的共通性,而空后“A perfect place to see this is Australia, where people have a very special and funny way of joking. (澳大利亚就是一个绝佳的例子,那里的人们有一种非常特别且有趣的开玩笑方式。)”引出了澳大利亚独特的幽默方式,说明幽默存在地域差异。B选项“But it can sound different from one country to another. (但它在不同的国家可能听起来有所不同。)”以转折关系衔接上文,既肯定了幽默的共通性,又引出了下文的地域差异,符合语境。故选B项。
【17题详解】
根据上文“For instance, someone might say to a friend, “What happened to your hair? It looks like a bird’s nest!” (例如,有人可能会对朋友说:“你的头发怎么了?看起来像个鸟巢!”)”可知,此处列举了澳大利亚朋友间的调侃例子,空后“But in Australia, this kind of joke is actually a sign of a strong friendship. (但在澳大利亚,这种玩笑实际上是深厚友谊的象征。)”中的“But”表明前后存在对比,即其他地方可能不接受这种玩笑。G选项“In many other different places, a comment like this might hurt someone’s feelings. (在许多其他地方,这样的评论可能会伤害到别人的感情。)”恰好与后文形成对比,突出澳大利亚这种幽默方式的独特性,符合语境。故选G项。
【18题详解】
根据上文“But in Australia, this kind of joke is actually a sign of a strong friendship. It shows that you are close enough to be completely honest with each other. (但在澳大利亚,这种玩笑实际上是深厚友谊的象征。它表明你们关系足够亲密,可以完全坦诚相待。)”可知,前文解释了澳大利亚朋友间调侃的意义,此空应承接上文,说明被调侃者的反应。C选项“Usually, the friend will just laugh, appreciating the honest joke. (通常,朋友会笑着欣赏这个坦诚的玩笑。)”符合“深厚友谊”下的合理反应,衔接自然。故选C项。
【19题详解】
本段主题是“self-depreciation (自嘲)”,上文“An Australian might say something like, “When I sing, it sounds like two cats having a fight on the street.” They enjoy sharing their own silly mistakes or things they are not good at.. (一个澳大利亚人可能会说:“我唱歌的时候,听起来就像两只猫在街上打架。”他们喜欢分享自己愚蠢的错误或不擅长的事情。)”举例说明了澳大利亚人的自嘲行为,空后“This makes other people feel more comfortable around them. (这让其他人在他们身边感觉更自在。)”解释了自嘲的效果,此空应承接上文,说明自嘲的本质。F选项“By laughing at themselves, they show that they don’t think they’re perfect. (通过自嘲,他们表明自己并不认为自己是完美的。)”准确解释了自嘲的核心——承认自身不完美,且与下文“让他人自在”的效果形成逻辑关联,符合语境。故选F项。
【20题详解】
根据上文“Visitors who don’t understand Australian sarcasm might get very worried and think the guide is telling the truth! (不了解澳大利亚讽刺文化的游客可能会非常担心,以为导游说的是实话!)”可知,此处描述了游客对澳大利亚讽刺幽默的误解,此空应转折说明导游话语的真实意图。D选项“Yet, it’s just a clever way to make the tour more fun and memorable. (然而,这只是一种让旅行更有趣、更难忘的聪明方式。)”既解释了讽刺幽默的目的,又呼应了前文“sarcasm is very common in Australia”,符合语境。

故填a。
故填who。

Reading or Traveling: My Choice for the Holiday
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Reading or Traveling: My Choice for the Holiday
As for the choice between “reading ten thousand books” and “traveling ten thousand miles” during the holiday, I would firmly choose the latter.
While reading undoubtedly enriches our knowledge and broadens our perspectives from the comfort of home, I believe traveling offers real-world experiences. First, it allows us to witness breathtaking landscapes, experience diverse cultures, and interact with people from different backgrounds — something books can only describe. Moreover, walking through ancient streets or climbing breathtaking mountains creates lasting memories and deepens our understanding of the world.
In short, if knowledge is the map, then travel is the journey that brings it to life. Let’s step outside and explore the wonders waiting beyond the pages!

I hugged him tightly, tears dampening (打湿) his golden fur.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Later, I had a chance to visit Larry’s new owner Mark, a person with seizures.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Tears filled my eyes as I realized the truth.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Later, I had a chance to visit Larry’s new owner Mark, a person with seizures. When we arrived at Mark’s home, Larry bounded toward us. And Mark’s wife CeCe welcomed us and explained the miracle. “That deep bark you tried to stop? It saves Mark’s life every day. Larry barks to warn me when a seizure is coming. He’s never been wrong.” She shared stories of how Larry had pulled her to the bathroom where Mark was seizing in the shower, and how his barking had prevented Mark from falling onto a hot stove while cooking.
Tears filled my eyes as I realized the truth. “I spent so much time trying to stop that bark,” I said. “I never imagined it would become someone’s lifeline.” Mark smiled warmly.” Because of Larry, I got my life back. I can go to restaurants and movies again. He gave me freedom.” As we drove away, I finally understood: sometimes what we see as weaknesses are actually special strengths waiting for the right purpose. Larry hadn’t failed— he had simply been destined for a different kind of greatness.
①预警:warn/alert
