The 60-foot-tall rocket took off in West Texas, sending a group of six people into space and giving them a few minutes of weightlessness before they landed by parachute (降落伞).
Most of the passengers paid a secret sum of money for their seats. But Katya Echazarreta, an engineer and science communicator, was selected by a nonprofit organization to join in this travel from a pool of thousands of applicants. The organization’s goal is to send great leaders into space and allow them to experience the overview effect, which was reported by astronauts who said that viewing the Earth from space gave them a great change in their view.
“Looking down, you see everyone is down there, all of our past, all of our difficulties, everything — everything is there,” Echazarreta said. “When I came back down, it just completely strengthened my wish to continue enabling people of different backgrounds to go into space and do whatever they want.”
Echazarreta is the first Mexican-born woman to travel into space. She moved to the United States with her family at the age of seven. She recalled that she felt uncertain in a new place where she didn’t speak the language and that a teacher warned her that she might have to repeat a grade. “It just really fueled me and after that, I just studied harder,” Echazarreta said. Later she became the main breadwinner in her family. Sometimes she had up to four jobs at the same time, just to try to successfully graduate from college.

Eight-year-old Xiao Ming sat with his head in his hands, muttering to himself as he tried to beat an AI-powered robot at a game of chess. But this was not in an AI showroom or lab — the robot was living on a coffee table in a Beijing apartment, along with Xiao Ming. “It’s like a little teacher or a little friend,” the boy said, as he showed his mum the next move he was considering on the chessboard.
China is actively employing AI in its bid to become a tech superpower by 2030. DeepSeek, the breakthrough Chinese chatbot that caught the world’s attention in January, was just the first shot of that ambition. Beijing plans to invest 100 billion Chinese yuan ($13.7 billion; €12.9 billion) over the next 15 years as it competes with Washington to gain the edge in advanced tech. AI funding got yet another boost at the government’s annual political gathering, which is currently underway.
This comes on the heels of a 60-billion-yuan AI investment fund created in January, just days after the US further tightened export controls for advanced chips and placed more Chinese firms on a trade blacklist.
But DeepSeek has shown that Chinese companies can overcome these barriers. And that’s what has surprised Silicon Valley and industry experts — they did not expect China to catch up so soon.
“DeepSeek’s rapid rise has caused hostile reactions from some in the West,” a commentary in the state-run Beijing Daily noted, adding that “the development environment for China’s AI models remains highly uncertain. “
But China’s AI firms are not discouraged. Rather, they believe thrifty innovation (节俭创新) will win them an undeniable advantage — because it was DeepSeek’s claim that it could rival ChatGPT for a tiny amount of the cost that shocked the AI industry.
8. Why is Xiao Ming mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To provide an argument. B. To present detailed information.
C. To lead in the topic. D. To illustrate China’s AI firms.
9. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3?
A. China has already had many successful AI achievements.
B. DeepSeek was just the first step for China to become a tech giant.
C. DeepSeek has suggested China’s determination to cooperate with others.
D. China invested 100-billion-yuan investment fund in January.
10. What is the attitude of some Western countries towards DeepSeek’s booming?
A. Unfriendly. B. Supportive C. Indifferent. D. Admiring.
11. What do we know from the passage?
A. All countries are making joint efforts in the development of AI.
B. The cost of DeepSeek is much higher than that of ChatGPT.
C. China’s AI development will face no difficulty in the future.
D. Chinese AI firms could outweigh due to its less expense
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. A 11. D

Imagine the roadways where nearly all serious accidents can be avoided, and trucks can transport goods around the clock without needing to stop for sleep. Applications for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) will replace the average human reaction time, lowering it from 1.6 seconds to just 0.5 seconds, saving countless lives in the process.
The driverless future of autonomous vehicles (AV) is set to transform society by reinventing (重塑) the transportation industry and changing consumer behaviors forever. Yet, the share of consumers who support government regulation of fully self-driving cars has declined 15% over the past year, and trust in the safety of autonomous vehicles is down 5%. To address these ongoing safety concerns, more must be done.
Autonomous vehicles should not be regulated by the same rules that govern standard passenger vehicles because those regulations do not address the unique safety challenges for AVs. To address these concerns, the industry will need to continue building public trust through the improved performance of AV systems, especially in controlled environments.
Reaching a totally hands-off and eyes-off autonomous driving experience will require a range of next-generation technologies that are still being developed. Automakers will continue to increase the safety of autonomous vehicles by applying new technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve the performance of sensors that use radio and light waves to help detect road users in all weather conditions.
The technical brain of an AV system relies on software systems that actively protect passengers. As this market grows, costs will steadily fall for these new sensors and high-performance computers, just as safety standards continue to progress around the country and the world. To help build confidence in AVs, the industry will need to generate a common set of testing standards, similar to crash safety standards, that AV developers can evaluate their systems against.
As autonomous driving evolves, the road to a driverless future still holds many twists and turns ahead. It should be an exciting and wild ride for years to come as the auto industry reinvents itself with ever-increasing levels of automation.
12. What make consumers still hesitant about the application of AV?
A. Costly operating systems. B. Government regulations.
C. Potential safety concerns. D. Complicated technologies.
13. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. AVs fail to follow standard regulations. B. Tailored rules are needed for AVs.
C. Public trust in AVs is difficult to earn. D. AVs should be tested on public roads.
14. How can the public’s trust in AVs be improved?
A. By integrating existing technologies. B. By limiting their maximum speed.
C. By developing a reliable testing system. D. By minimizing the cost of sensors.
15. What is the writer’s attitude towards the future of AVs?
A. Skeptical and concerned. B. Cautious yet optimistic.
C. Worried and reserved. D. Pessimistic yet tolerant.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. C 15. B

When Failure Is a Good Thing
Failure is an important process you can learn from. ____16____
Most people view failure as something that should be avoided at all costs. ____17____It may have been an “F” we received on a paper or the high expectations our parents placed upon our shoulders that stopped us from trying.
Award-winning psychologist and author, Ron Friedman, tells the story of how Sara Blakely, founder of Spanx, revolutionized the women’s clothing industry and became a billionaire in his book, The Best Place To Work: The Art and Science of Creating an Extraordinary Workplace.
____18____She had zero experience in the clothing industry, lacked an education in business and raised only $5,000 to invest. When asked where she found the courage, she gave all credit to her dad. While most parents ask their kids, “How was your day?” when sitting down for dinner, Sara’s parents asked her and her brother, “What did you fail at today?” each and every night.
When interviewed by CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Sara said, “Instead of failure being the outcome, failure became not trying. It forced me at a young age to want to push myself so much further out of my comfort zone.” ____19____It became more about learning and less about a personal weakness.
If we view failure as weakness, we avoid stepping out of our comfort zone. ____20____It does not define us, but instead matures us. I’m sure that there are many risks we would all take in our personal, professional and spiritual lives if we could get past a fear of failure.
A. In reality, Sara’s father had re-defined failure.
B. Early on, Sara overcame a series of difficulties.
C. And, most importantly, it means you tried.
D. Let’s take a look at how Sara faced failures.
E. We tend to connect failure with a bad experience we had as a child.
F. Instead, we must remind ourselves that failure is an action.
G. It is important to reflect on what can be learnt from failure.
【答案】16. C 17. E 18. B 19. A 20. F

She worked in NASA before and didn’t see other female engineers like her, which inspired her to popularize science among the public. These days, Echazarreta is studying for her master’s degree in engineering at Johns Hopkins University. She also has more than 330,000 fans on TikTok, and hosts a science-focused YouTube series.

A By integrating existing technologies. B. By limiting their maximum speed.
C. By developing a reliable testing system. D. By minimizing the cost of sensors.
15. What is the writer’s attitude towards the future of AVs?
A. Skeptical and concerned. B. Cautious yet optimistic.
C Worried and reserved. D. Pessimistic yet tolerant.

When interviewed by CNN’s Anderson Cooper Sara said, “Instead of failure being the outcome, failure became not trying.
