Passage 1
(24-25九年级上·四川内江·期末)
I was 15 months old, a happy carefree kid, until the day I fell. It was a bad fall. I landed on a piece of glass that cut my eye badly. From then on, so my injured sightless, cloudy gray eye lived on with me. Sometimes people asked me embarrassing (尴尬的) questions. When kids played games, I was always the “monster (怪物)”
I grew up imagining that everyone looked down on me.
Yet mom would say to me. “Hold your head up high and face the world.” I began to depend on that saying. As a child, I thought mum meant, “Be careful or you will fall down or run into something because you are not looking.
As a teenager, I usually looked down to hide my shame. But I found that when I held my head up high, people liked me.
In high school I even became the class leader, but on the inside I still felt like a monster.
All I really wanted was to look like everyone else. When things got really bad, I would cry to my mom and she would look at me with loving eyes and say,” Hold your head up high and face the world. Let them see the beauty that is inside instead of your appearance.
My mom’s love gave me confidence. I had faced difficulties, and learned not only to appreciate (欣赏) myself but to have deep compassion (同情) for others.

And they walked with no idea where they were going. They had lost all sense of time. They did not know if it was night or day. Becky grew weaker and weaker as they went. Tom, after a while, had to put out the candle (蜡烛) in order to save it, for he only had one more in his pocket. And so much of the time they walked in total darkness, feeling their way along the walls.
Tom lit the candle again, and made his way down one of the passages. While he was feeling around, his hand suddenly touched another hand. Tom jumped back, held out his candle far in front of him to see who was there. A face then appeared from down below. It was the face of Injun Joe!
Both of them screamed (尖叫) and then Injun Joe turned and disappeared quickly into the darkness. Tom turned and made his way back to where Becky was sitting. He decided not to tell Becky what he had seen, and just said that he had shouted for luck. But in his mind, he could not stop wondering if Injun Joe would soon return to kill him.

Bissell is a village in West Sahara. Before Ken Levin discovered it, people here tried many times to walk out of the desert, but they didn’t. He asked everyone, but got the same answer: no matter (无论) which direction you walk towards, you will return to the starting point. However, Ken Levin walked northwards from Bissell, and went out of the desert three days and a half later.
Ken Levin wanted to know why, so he asked a villager to be his guide. He didn’t take his compass and followed with only a stick. They walked about 800 miles during 10 days. On the morning of the 11th day, they returned to Bissell.
Ken Levin finally understood: the people of Bissell could not walk out because they didn't know the Pole Star (北极星). In the desert, if a man goes only by his feeling, he will walk in circles of all sizes and the final footprint will probably be a shape of tape. The village of Bissell was in the middle of the desert without a reference. So it was impossible to walk out without knowing the Pole Star or taking a compass.
When Ken Levin left Bissell, he took a young man named Guterl. He told him he could walk out of the desert as long as he walked in the direction of the Pole Star in the night.
Guterl followed Ken Levin’s advice and succeeded.

Whitney wondered where Lexie was in the race. Lexie had been Whitney’s competitor for as long as she could remember. Lexie was an excellent swimmer. She had broken most of the school records—and she had only been swimming for three years!

Passage 1
(24-25九年级上·四川眉山·期末)
Would you like to have your own cat? Perhaps you would like more than one? Two, three, or even four? Four does seem a lot, but not for everyone. Let’s meet Lynea Lattanzio.
Lynea was not allowed to keep a cat when she was young, so she decided to make up for it later on. In 1983, she moved into a big house close to the Kings River in California, USA.In 1992, her father asked her to help him find two pet cats. She ended up taking home a box of 15 kittens (小猫). By the end of the year, she had saved 96 more cats and she built a home for them — the Cat House on the Kings. In 2004 there were more than 500 cats and kittens living with Lynea. Today, she has over 700.
The Cat House is the largest cat sanctuary (庇护所) in California. Here, no cat is killed. Anyone who no longer wants to keep a cat can bring it to the sanctuary. Managing over 700 cats is like managing an army. When new cats arrive at the Cat House, they are kept in a special area. Some are ready to join the other cats a few days later, and others take longer.
Lynea has saved tens of thousands of cats. Many of them have been given to families who would like to adopt a cat, while others remain at the Cat House for the rest (剩余部分) of their lives.

Zengzi, also called Zeng Shen, became a good student of Confucius (孔子) when he was 16.
Early one morning, Zengzi’s wife left for the market. Her little son wanted to go with her. But he was too young and the market was too far. Then she cheated her son, “I will be back soon. You stay at home and wait for me. If you do as I say, I will kill a pig and make a nice dish for you.” The child went back to the house happily.
When Zengzi’s wife got back from the market, she showed no sign of killing a pig. So Zengzi himself prepared to do that, but his wife rushed to prevent him and said, “Don’t do that. I just cheated the child.”
“Honesty is the most important thing,” Zengzi said. “Children are like blank pieces of paper. They understand nothing but they can learn from their parents’ actions. Because you have cheated your son, he won’t trust you anymore. In the future he will cheat others.”
Hearing her husband’s words, Zengzi’s wife felt sorry. So she joined Zengzi in killing the pig, and cooked nice dishes for the child. While eating, the boy was happy and thankful to his parents.
One evening, when the child went to bed, he suddenly got up and ran outside. Zengzi asked him where he was going. The boy replied, “I promised I was going to return a toy to a friend today. Tom, after a while, had to put out the candle (蜡烛) in order to save it, for he only had one more in his pocket.
