一、七选五
Although it is great to have friends our own age, there are also some pretty good benefits to making older friends. 1
Having older friends provides insight and wisdom.
As the old saying goes, with age comes maturity. Older people have wisdom about how to navigate (应对) life smoothly. They have already passed crucial milestones like building a career, buying a home, getting married, starting a family, and maybe even retiring. 2
Plus, intergenerational friendships not only benefit you, but they can also benefit the other person. 3 For example, you can teach them new technological trends or help them with pop culture references. Friendship is a two-way street where both sides benefit and bonds are strengthened over time.
4
Allowing friends to be more supportive of one another rather than always comparing and competing with one another is a must in every circle of friends. Friendships between generations are not competitive because they are at various phases of life.
Older friends tend to communicate more honestly.
Now I am not saying having friendships with honesty will be more lacking, but have you ever had a conversation with someone older? 5 Older individuals are at an age where they no longer feel the need to impress people and they definitely are not afraid to share their opinions, for better or for worse!
A. You can inspire them in different ways.
B. So you can always ask them for advice on important issues.
C. Older friends are supportive and less competitive.
D. Older friends appreciate and value relationships.
E. Listening to their stories will help them reflect on times gone by.
F. Here is why we should invest in cross-generational friendships.
G. They have no problem being straight up honest whether we want to hear it or not.

Kathy Johnston is so in love with chocolate; she lies awake at night thinking about it. But as chief chocolate officer of Dubai-based chocolatier Mirzam, that’s a healthy focus to have.
Like many other goods, most of Dubai’s chocolate has traditionally been imported, but Mirzam develops home-grown alternative. Johnston joined Mirzam in early 2016 after meeting the company’s founders, who persuaded her to work for them, rather than chasing her original dream of moving to Switzerland, chocolate capital of the world.
At first, the company’s plan was to mainly export its offerings to the U.S. while slowly building a market in the United Arab Emirates (阿联酋). But locals quickly accept the company’s unique chocolates, which are known for their Emirati flavors and spices (香料) such as cardamom, almonds and pistachios. That Mirzam works with local artists for its branding and packaging further strengthens its hometown reputation. Nearly as soon as Mirzam’s team opened their doors for tastings, the company sold out all its stock. “We didn’t expect such a strong response locally,” Johnston says, “We had no time to think about export.”
Born in New Zealand, Johnston moved to Dubai when she was 3 years old. Her love of chocolate goes all the way back to her childhood, when she would build ladders out of kitchen chairs to get her mother’s hidden chocolates. She recalls telling her grandfather that her dream was to have her own chocolate factory.
That dream has come true at Mirzam, where Johnston oversees everything from sourcing to production, packaging, and sales. But her true passion is coming up with innovative new sweets, with a focus on integrating traditional Emirati recipes into the company’s offerings.
Recipes like those have helped Mirzam grow at an amazing pace--it had doubled its production capacity every year since opening and increased its staff from one to 75 in five years. Now, Mirzam is still working on “producing amazing-quality chocolate,” Johnston says.
4. Why didn’t Johnston move to Switzerland?
A. She was convinced by a chocolate company.
B. She has a dream to import chocolate.
C. She was attracted by the chocolate capital.
D. She has an affection for chocolate.
5. What make the company’s chocolates so popular?
A. Free tastings for new products.
B. Imported sources of high quality.
C. Unique flavors to the local taste.
D. Strong responses to the local market.
6. What can we learn about Johnston from the text?
A. She was brought up in New Zealand.
B. She owed her dream to her grandfather.
C. She works on opening overseas markets.
D. She takes pleasure in developing new products.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Mirzam: Chocolate Sales Going Local.
B. Cardamom: Emirati Recipes Catching On.
C. Johnston: “Sweet Dreams” Coming True.
D. Dubai: Home-based Businesses Taking Off.

Paisley is a distinctive pattern used to decorate fabrics (纤维织物) and make countless clothes lively. This pattern also has a uniquely rich history dating back hundreds of years, spreading across multiple continents.
Paisley’s most obvious feature is the large swooshing (涡旋) shapes called boteh. Many experts believe the shape is actually an artistically designed tree, which was a powerful religious symbol in India for thousands of years. Besides, the pattern could also represent flowers, the sun, a phoenix, or even an eagle. The exact meaning is lost to history, even though the pattern lives on.
The pattern eventually made its way to the Western world in the 18th and 19th centuries, when it became the height of fashion for the time. Silk scarves bearing the pattern could be as expensive as a small house. Owing to its popularity, especially in Great Britain, it was quickly duplicated and mass-produced. One of the major manufacturing centers of the pattern was Scotland, which is how the pattern got its English name.
In the early 20th century, the popularity of the pattern faded for a time. Eventually, it exploded back onto the fashion scene with the help of a surprising force: rock 'n' roll. It started in the 1960s with the Beatles, who not only wore paisley but used patterns in colorful artwork. Other rock legends like the Rolling Stones, Janice Joplin, and David Bowie kept the trend going well into the 1970s. Paisley was suddenly cool and glamorous again, at least temporarily.
Since then, however, the popularity of the pattern has slowly declined. It still pops up on fashion runways and as a colorful accessory (配饰) for some clothes, but paisley is just one of many elegant patterns. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean it won’t make a comeback again.
8. According the text, what is boteh?
A. A universal symbol of art.
B. A sacred tree planted in India.
C. The manufacturing process of paisley.
D. The typical shape found in paisley.
9. What does the underlined word “duplicated” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Transformed. B. Copied.
C. Abolished. D. Protected.
10. Why does the author mention the rock 'n' roll stars in Paragraph 4?
A. They helped paisley regain its popularity.
B. They studied the history of fashion.
C. They preserved the value of paisley.
D. They looked extremely cool and glamorous.
11. What can be concluded about paisley from the text?
A. It has been regarded as a typical representative of pop culture.
B. It won't withdraw entirely from the fashion world.
C. It was discovered in Britain and thus got its English name.
D. It demonstrates the close connection between religion and fashion.

Recently I had the opportunity to reconnect with an old friend, Chris Besse. One of the things I always admired about Chris was the way that he saw education as a mission, not a job. Chris called me last week to tell me he is CEO of a company called EdgeMakers, which is a new company that is bringing one of the missing ingredients (要素) to education: innovation.
I am always calling for changes in the way we educate our children. It is important that we prepare our children for a different economy and a different world. Employers of the future will demand creativity from their employees.
A tech company owned by a friend of mine has grown from a handful of employees to over 100 in the last seven years, and he still has 90 percent of all the employees he hired. He doesn’ t pay more than other tech firms. He doesn’t have a Disney-like campus. What he does is pose interesting problems, not get involved in the solutions and allow employees to get to the solution in any way they want. His employees stay because they are motivated and interested.
This is the definition of modern industry and in many ways, the future of education. Successful employers now encourage innovation. Schools should create an innovative environment. But it appears that our current education system has a long way to go to achieve this.
The good news is that some schools are making changes. California and Texas just approved EdgeMakers' courses for use in their high schools. According to John Kao, founder of EdgeMakers, “Creativity is inside every student, waiting to be freed. But without intentional programs in our schools, creativity is underdeveloped. We cannot allow this to continue, as our society is faced with problems that appear unsolvable unless we innovate to find solutions. Our goal with these courses is to combine students' natural creativity with purpose, helping them develop as innovators whose work is truly meaningful and makes a difference to issues that matter.”
12. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To recommend a course. B. To remember a friend.
C. To bring up a topic. D. To explain a phenomenon.
13. What do the author and Chris have similar views on?
A. The future of job searching.
B. The major mission of their company.
C. The importance of innovation in education.
D. The role of parents in kids' development.
14. How does the author' s friend keep his employees?
A. By creating an environment of innovation.
B. By helping them solve problems.
C. By providing a comfortable workplace.
D. By offering high salaries.
15.Which statement will John Kao agree with?
A. Intentional teaching should be avoided n schools.
B. We should pay less attention to unsolvable problems.
C. EdgeMakers' courses have proved to be efficient.
D. Natural creativity can be enhanced.

When the last customer1eft KFC, it was already 10:30 pm. Daniel, an 18-year-old college student, dragged himself home. He had been working at KFC for over a month that summer vacation.
Entering his room, Daniel found his younger brother Eric sitting on the edge of his bed with an uneasy expression on his face.
“Sorry, Daniel. I ... I did something wrong.” Eric sprang up and said nervously.
“What is it?”
“This afternoon I sneaked out for a ride on your motorcycle and accidentally hit our neighbor Mr. Green's car. I was so scared and I .... I hurried home in panic.”
“Is the car seriously damaged?”
“The left headlight got broken.”
“It's truly your fault and it's really dangerous to ride a motorcycle at your age. Besides, it's illegal.” Daniel raised his voice, obviously annoyed. Hearing this, Eric lowered his head and bit his lips hard.
“Anyway, it's no use crying over spilt milk. I will deal with it tomorrow. Now you go to bed and have a good sleep.”
The next morning when Daniel got up, Eric was still sleeping soundly. Daniel was more determined about what he ought to do as an elder brother.
After breakfast, Daniel took out all the money he had earned and went out of the house with it. In the yard he saw his motorcycle, on whose side the scratches were clearly visible. Daniel shook his head and sighed slightly. Then he squared his shoulders and quickened his pace to Mr. Green's house. When he arrived, he was welcomed by Mrs. Green, who told him that Mr. Green had gone to the garage to have his car repaired.
“I have something important to tell him. Can I wait until he comes back?” Daniel requested eagerly.
“Of course. He should be home soon.” Mrs. Green invited Daniel in, served him a cup of coffee and began chatting with him.
After half an hour, the door opened and in came Mr. Green. Having said hello to each other, Mr. Green and Daniel both sat down on the sofa.

D

答案:
Daniel cleared his throat and began to speak. “Mr. Green, I’m here to make an apology. Yesterday afternoon my brother Eric damaged your car and ran away in panic. We are awfully sorry for that.” “Oh, I see. But it’s no big deal,” Mr. Green smiled. Then Daniel drew out the money from his pocket and said with sincerity, “This is all the money I have, I wonder if it can pay for your loss.” However, Mr. Green insisted that it was only minor damage and declined to take it.
Just then, there came a knock at the door. Mr. Green went to answer it, only to find Eric standing outside. “Morning, Mr. Green. I... I’ve come to say sorry for ...” Eric stammered. But Mr. Green laughed and let him in. The two brothers were both surprised and glad to see each other. Mr. Green gave them a thumbs-up and praised them happily, “Good boys, I truly appreciate your honesty. Just forget about my car.” Whatever the boys said, Mr. Green wouldn’t take the money. Finally, he accepted their suggestion that they make it up to him by doing some work in his garden.
