Passage 1
(24-25九上·英语湖南衡阳实验中学·期末)
“Made in China” is having its moment now—and it’s a fashionable one.
The story of Chinese fashion began in 2011 when Feiyue and Huili, the two Chinese sports shoe brands, suddenly got international attention. Their products were seen all over the world. A famous Chinese sportswear brand Li Ning was at the New York Fashion Week in September, 2018. They showed their new designs—sweaters and jackets with Chinese characters.
Shaun Rein, managing director of China Market Research Group, said that the latest Chinese brands no longer catch customers’ eyes by low price. He told CNN, “They are sure that they can go head to head with foreign brands.”
Maybe it is because China’s young people are now more confident about their own culture. They don’t show immediate interest in Western culture any more.
“Today’s young people in China are crazy about Chinese cultural elements (元素),” Jin Qu, the manager of a clothing shopping website, said at a cultural festival in 2018. “They like these elements printed on their clothes, even the brand picture of Laoganma in China, which was once seen as outside of fashion. But now young people are proud of these Chinese symbols.”
In fact, many stars in the West now are interested in Chinese cultural elements in fashion. Rihanna, a US singer, for example, wore a Chinese red dress to the 2015 Met Gala in New York. The dress was designed and made by Chinese designer Guo Pei.
“We have to move from making to creating”, Chinese-American designer Aric Chen once told The New York Times. “We want to replace the words ‘Made in China’ with ‘Designed in China’.”

Passage 2
(24-25九上·湖南长沙长沙县·期末)
In December 2020, the “quiet carriage” service was first introduced on some trains of the high-speed railway. Up to June 2024, this service has expanded to more than 90 trains.
The “quiet carriages” feature silent videos and announcements made at a low volume (音量). Doors at both ends of the carriage are closed to reduce noise from outside. During the trip, passengers must wear earphones or turn off loudspeakers when using electronic devices. They also need to leave their seats to make or answer calls, and their phones should be set to silent or vibrate mode (振动模式). For those travelling with children, they must take care of them and keep them quiet.
Mr. Li, a Chengdu local, said, “I make at least one round trip a week between Chengdu and Chongqing for work. I sometimes need to focus on my work or get some rest during the hour-long trip. The ‘quiet carriage’ is a good choice for me.”
“When I booked the tickets, I first saw the option (选项) for the ‘quiet carriage’, and I wanted to give it a shot,” said Miss Mou, who took the train from Beijing to Shanghai. “When I entered the carriage for the first time, signs reminding passengers to keep quiet were everywhere, and it was really much quieter than the other carriages.

Passage 3
(24-25九上·湖南长沙长沙县·期末)
Qingxu County in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, has been a major production area for aged vinegar since ancient times. The aged vinegar made there was known far and wide and was carried by Shanxi merchants during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
The production process, which dates back more than 3,000 years, must go through at least five steps. The newly-made vinegar has a light color but as the years go by, it becomes thicker and darker. The aging process (陈化过程) lasts at least one year, which is where the name “aged vinegar comes from”.
To this day, the work is still mostly done by hand. Inside a local workshop in Qingxu, which is built in ancient style, workers dressed in Ming Dynasty clothing are busy performing traditional vinegar brewing tasks. “They are not actors, but real workers,” says Mr Zhang, manager of the workshop. “With the rapid development of our company, our customers have shown increasing interest in knowing how the aged vinegar is made, as well as its cultural background.”
In addition, to meet high standards, new equipment (设备) and techniques have been added to the production process. In the workshop, 190 fermentation tanks (发酵罐) are lined up like soldiers. “Both fermentation and smoking (熏) tasks can be achieved without human help. We even use 5G technology for digital control,” Mr Zhang adds. “While the vinegar is fermented by machine, it still goes through the traditional aging process, so its taste remains unchanged.”
Still, in recent years, the vinegar industry in Qingxu has been adapting to the times. While it continues its tradition, it has welcomed new ideas, such as ice cream with vinegar and tangyuan with vinegar fillings.
1. When was the aged vinegar carried outside by Shanxi merchants?
A.During the Ming dynasties.

Every country has its own table manners, which can reflect special cultures among countries. So what do people do when they eat in different countries? Let’s take a look!
In Japan, it is considered polite to say “Itadakimasu (那我开动了)” before starting to eat, which shows thanks for the food. They use chopsticks in a proper way. For example, it is impolite to stick chopsticks in a bowl of rice because it stands for a ritual (礼节) for the dead. But making some noise when having noodles is OK.
In China, the host usually shows hospitality by making delicious food and advising the guests to help themselves. Avoid using chopsticks to point at others directly because it is impolite. You’re not supposed to stick your chopsticks into the food, either. And it is polite to wait until the elders start eating before the younger ones. During a meal, the conversation is usually lively, but one should not talk with a full mouth.
Do you know any table manners in the US? In the US, people usually use forks, knives, and spoons. They cut their food with a knife in the right hand and a fork in the left, and they eat with their right hand. It is common to have a conversation during the meal, and table topics can be of all kinds. Saying “please” and “thank you” is also an important part of American table manners.
In Russia, the table is often filled with a lot of dishes. It is common to have a toast (祝酒) before starting to eat. People may hold their glasses with their right hand and touch the bottom (底部) of the glasses when toasting. When eating bread, it is proper to break it with your hands rather than cutting it with a knife.
Understanding these table manners in other countries can help us avoid misunderstandings and show respect (尊敬) when we are in different countries. It makes our cultural knowledge colorful. Knowing about these customs helps us get used to local life and have a good dining experience.
1. In which country, making noise when having noodles is OK?
A.In China. B.In Japan. C.In Russia.
2.The underlined word “hospitality” in Paragraph 3 means ________.

When you and your friends turn to each other to talk about problems or troubles, you give each other advice and help. One important thing of our growth is to make decisions to help our friends and learn to support each other. This requires us to learn what it means to help friends and how to help them in right ways.
The first step toward helping others is to identify (确认) that they need help. We all know that difficulties are part of our daily lives. However, sometimes small things can lead to more serious problems that require more help. It’s important to make sure when to help a friend. For example, you may pick up some signs that your friends are not acting like themselves. These signs show they may not be well.
The next step toward helping others is to listen. Paying attention to others while listening is very important throughout our life. When we communicate with others, we need to learn when to speak and when not to. As listeners, we should try to understand what the speakers are feeling or experiencing and try to see things from their perspectives. Listening and paying attention to others when they speak is a sign of respect and a skill that will lead to deeper and better relationships.

Passage 2
(24-25九上·湖南湘潭·期末)
Everyone knows how to find the age of a fallen tree. We count the number of rings of the tree. And recently a scientist has found a new way to measure (衡量) the age of people—get them to stand on one leg. Dr Kenton Kaufman from the Mayo Clinic in the USA said standing on one leg shows how well a person can balance (平衡). He said balance becomes more difficult as we get older. Dr Kaufman added: “Balance is an important measure because, in addition to physical strength (力量), it requires input from sight, the hearing, and the senses.” He added: “Good balance provides the ability to carry out activities of daily living without the fear of falling, and this leads to improved life and healthy ageing.”
40 people over the age of 50 took part in the research. They did tests for walking, balance, grip (抓握) and knee strength. Each person had to balance on their dominant (主导的) and non-dominant leg for 30 seconds. They did this with their eyes closed, and again with their eyes open. Kaufman found that standing on the non-dominant leg showed the fastest drop with age. For every ten years, there was a 2.2-second drop when people stood on their non-dominant leg. This compared to 1.7 seconds for the dominant leg. Kaufman said: “Standing on one leg is a good measure of your overall health because balance reflects how the body parts are working together.”

Passage 2
(24-25九上·湖南长沙周南教育集团·期末)
Imagine taking a flying taxi to the airport, or jumping over crowded city streets at rush hour, getting where you want to go far away faster than you could in a car. Believe it or not, you might be able to do these things in an air taxi sooner than you think.
An air taxi is something like a helicopter (直升机) that can carry people from place to place. And can go straight up and down without a long runway.
An American company called Joby Aviation has started testing their new air taxis. This is the first time they’ve tested a taxi that’s been built in a factory. Before that, all their taxis were made by hand. By 2025, Joby hopes to start carrying passengers for money. They’ve teamed up with Delta Air Lines to create a program to fly people from their homes to the airport. Besides the pilot, Joby’s air taxis can carry four other passengers. They can go around 100 miles before the electric batteries (电池) need to be recharged.
Compared with helicopters, Joby says their air taxis are both quieter and cheaper.
Although the idea of flying taxis is exciting, some people are still concerned about them. The air taxis may be quieter than helicopters, but they’ll still add noise and traffic to our skies. Some people worry that only rich people will be able to afford to use them.
It seems likely that air taxis will be part of the future travel. But there’s still a lot to do before air taxis become common.
1. How does the writer begin the passage?
A.By raising questions. B.By imagining scenes. C.By explaining reasons.
2. What can we learn about Joby Aviation’s new taxis according to Paragraph 3?
A.They’re made by hand.
B.They can fly 100 miles per hour.
C.They can carry five people in total at one time.
3. What does the underlined word “concerned” mean in Paragraph 5?
A.Worried. B.Nervous. C.Hopeless.
4What is the best title for the passage?
A.A new flying taxi. B.A perfect travel means. C.A new helicopter.
Passage 3
(24-25九上·湖南长沙开福区青竹湖湘一外国语学校·期末)
A skywell, or “tian jing”, is typical feature of a traditional home in southern and eastern China, which can date back to Ming and Qing dynasties. A skywell is almost always in the center of a house, meaning there’re rooms on four sides or three sides and a wall. It acts as a transitional (过渡的) space between indoor life and the outdoor environment.
Before the invention of air-conditioning, southern China’s skywells played a key role in keeping people’s homes cool. When wind blows above a skywell house, it can enter the indoor space through the opening. As the cool outdoor air travels down the walls to the lower floors, it replaces warmer indoor air, making the bottom of the skywell stay cool. Even when there is no natural wind, air circulation (循环) still takes place, because the temperature is different between the top and bottom of the skywell. Moreover, another part of the cooling affect comes from the evaporation (蒸发) of water. People collect rainwater in their skywells, and when the water evaporates, it cools hot air.
Today, although fewer and fewer people live in skywell houses, some designers take a new interest in the traditional Chinese buildings. They are getting creative ideas from skywells to help keep new buildings cooler. One example is the National Heavy Vehicle Engineering Technology Research Center (NHVETRC) in Jinan, which was completed in 2022. The 18-floor glass-walled tower building has a huge skywell in the middle, from the fifth to the top floor. The lifts, toilets and meeting rooms are all set around the skywell, which helps improve the lighting and air circulation of the building and then cut the use of energy.
1. Which of the following pictures best describes the skywell?
A. B. C.
2. What’s the main idea of the second paragraph?
A.How a skywell helps to cool a house.
B.How wind blows through a skywell.
C.How important a skywell is.
3. Which is TRUE about the skywell?
A.There were skywell houses in Hangzhou in Tang Dynasty.
B.Skywells help to cool a house in two ways.
C.People can see the sky through the skywell on any floor of the NHVETRC.
4. Which is the best title of the passage?
A.Skywells: A Traditional Design to Be Protected
B.Skywells: Modern Technology for City Lives
C.Skywells: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Times
Passage 3
(24-25九上·湖南长沙开福区青竹湖湘一外国语学校·期末)
What do you call your mother’s mother? Whether you say laolao or waipo depends on your dialect (方言). And humans aren’t the only ones who have different dialects. Some animals do, too!
Scientists at Aarhus University in Denmark spent six years studying sperm whale in the Caribbean. They found that the whale communicate through special noises that are unique to their group because the noise has never been found in Pacific whales. When researchers studied the howls (嚎叫) of different kinds of wolves, they found that red wolves, Arctic wolves and coyotes (郊狼) have howls that are different in pitch (音高). In other words, they have their own dialects. Other animals that have been shown to have dialects include bats and dogs.
So how do animals develop their own dialects? According to scientist Darcy Kelley, most animals learn their accents (口音) naturally. For example, monkeys start speaking their dialect as soon as they are born. And when scientists placed some monkeys in a new environment where their playmates all spoke a different dialect, it was interesting to find that the monkeys still spoke their own dialect. It seemed that the environment had no influence on their communication. However, some animals can change their accent according to their environment. Studies show that birds who live in cities develop different accents from those in the countryside. To deal with loud city noise, city birds’ tweets (啁啾声) are high-pitched. It makes it easier to be heard in noisy places.
“A proper accent can help animals to find friends or warn the coming of enemies, which is a basic living skill. No animal group can risk changing their own dialect and learning a new one.” Darcy Kelly says.
1. How does the writer lead into the topic?
A.By giving an example. B.By listing numbers. C.By making a survey.
2. Which might be the right meaning of the underlined word “unique”?
A.独一无二的 B.不可或缺的 C.十分稀有的
3. What can we infer from the passage?
A.All the animals are found to have their own dialects.
B.The environment doesn’t always influence animals’ accents.
C.It’s worth taking a risk for animals to change their own dialects.
4. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To tell us the importance of dialects.
B.To ask us to protect the dialects of animals.
C.To introduce a fascinating discovery about animals.

A 550-kg robot helps tea farmers pick Longjing tea in Hangzhou’s West Lake.
Longjing tea, also known as West Lake Dragon Well tea, is a kind of green tea. As one of China’s 10 most famous teas, it has green color, smooth taste, and a beautiful shape.
“Having a beautiful shape is often considered to be good tea. The picking work of such tea leaves is mostly done by hand, and it’s very difficult to be replaced by machines,” said Jia Jiangming, the developer of the robot. However, most of the tea pickers are in their 60s, few are in their 50s, and there are hardly any young people willing to find jobs in the industry.
“If so, the Longjing tea industry may face great difficulty when there remains nobody to help pick the leaves,” Jia said when explaining why his team started to develop tea-picking robots as early as 2019.
Earlier in 2023, Jia’s robot helper developed into its fifth generation(代), lifting the accuracy to 86 percent and improving the picking efficiency (效率) to 1.5 seconds per tea leaf. Compared with the third-generation robot, the new robot’s tea-picking success rate (率) rose from 40 percent to 60 percent.
The new generation robot can do as well as a human tea picker. Though the robot is still being tested, they plan to make it better, allowing the tea industry to enjoy the advantages brought by modern machines in the coming future.

Carving (雕刻) is a highly valued art in Lanzhou, Gansu’s capital. It has been practiced for over a thousand years. The artists carve thin-skinned egg gourds (葫芦) from the area, requiring great skill to avoid breaking the piece.
Lanzhou’s gourd carving started during the Wei and Jin dynasties (220-420) when gourds were used for wine along the ancient Silk Road. Over time, the simple act of painting turned into detailed carving and painting, becoming a job for many during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911). In modern China, this art form was gradually forgotten.
Ruan Xiyue, born in 1987, has been perfecting her skill for over ten years, a tradition in her family for four generations. Her right hand is bigger and rougher (粗糙的) from years of carving, showing her dedication to the art. The popularity of the game “Travel Frog” among young people inspired her to create a Utopian (乌托邦) world with the frog’s image. Ruan uses gourds as a canvas (画布) and gradually other creative products. She creates gourd mirrors, accessories (配饰), tea sets, bag, and more.
As culture becomes a part of daily life and gets public attention, an increasing number of people are learning Lanzhou gourd carving from Ruan. Since the beginning of this year, she has welcomed over 1,000 visitors per week for study tours. Ruan said that many children are amazed by gourd carving and say, “No wonder this is intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产)”, which deeply moves her. (24-25九上·湖南岳阳汨罗·期末)
You must have read or heard of the sad love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu. But can you imagine Jia and Lin singing operas in English instead of speaking poetic (有诗意的) Chinese?
Jia and Lin are two characters from the classic Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions (《红楼梦》), written by Cao Xueqin (1715—1763). Now the book has been made into an English-language opera. After being performed in San Francisco, US, the performance came to Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan in 2017.
Many of the opera’s creators have backgrounds in both Chinese and American cultures, including the director and playwrights (剧作家). Their understanding of both cultures helped them change a Chinese classic into a foreign-language opera.
The art director Timmy Yip, from Hong Kong, tried to help foreign people understand the characters using costumes and stage settings. He compared Lin to water and gave her a light green costume. When Lin showed up on stage, there was usually water around her on the stage.
The creators considered it to be a meaningful job to introduce a Chinese classic to Western audiences. Hwang told China Daily he was happy to “have made a contribution to the land where my parents were born.”

People may hold their glasses with their right hand and touch the bottom (底部) of the glasses when toasting. When eating bread, it is proper to break it with your hands rather than cutting it with a knife.

A.Worried. B.Nervous. C.Hopeless.

4.最佳标题题。综合全文可知,文章主要介绍了中国古代的天井如何让住宅保持凉爽,以及它对现代建筑设计的影响;选项B“天井:古代智慧、现代应用”适合作为文章的标题。故选C。
