I missed the clear blue skies of home in Colorado over my grandparents’ farm. Some of my earliest memories were of sitting on my grandfather’s knee while he played his violin. When I was old enough, I went to college on a music scholarship. But when I came to New York City, I left my violin behind.
“As long as you’ve got music, you’ve got good company, Jane,” my grandfather always said. I didn’t have either in my life these days. Looking at the gray sky, I was wondering whether I could get auditions- to give a short performance to be in a film.
The winter sky was starting to turn purple when I heard something unexpected. An orchestra was practicing. I followed the sounds to the park and saw the musicians practicing. I approached the director during a break. “This is a community orchestra,” he said. “One you’re welcome to join. All you need is an instrument.” But I couldn’t afford to buy one and it wasn’t the kind of thing my parents could just ship from Colorado.
As I walked back with heavy steps, a sign made me stop short: Schumacher Violin Maker. From the window, I saw an old man wearing glasses adjusting the bridge on a violin. I stepped inside and told him my story. When I’d finished, he said,“So, you need a violin.” I nodded in embarrassment. He surveyed the rows of instruments and selected a violin with a bright color. “Take it,” he said. “Go and make your music.” I stood there, surprised, as he handed it to me.
Holding the violin, I felt like I’d just woken up from a dream. But it was real—as real as the strings I was touching. My heart pounding with excitement, I headed for the park. There was a chair in the orchestra waiting for me. Playing the violin, I immediately felt at home. I made a ton of friends there. Music had brought me good company, just as my grandfather had promised.
24. What might be the author’s dream job in New York City?
A. An actress. B. An artist. C. A violinist. D. A composer.
25. How does the author express her mood at different times?
A. By creating dialogues. B. By recording emotional conflicts.
C. By citing her grandfather’s words. D. By describing the colors of the sky.
26. Who did the author turn to for a violin?
A. Her grandfather. B. Her parents.
C. The shopkeeper. D. The director.
27. What can we infer from the last paragraph about the author?
A. She woke up from her dream. B. She failed in her career attempts.
C. Her grandfather lived in her heart. D. Music gave her a sense of belonging.

It’s the middle of winter, and the prospect of warm sunny days is a long way off. For some of us, it’s the most depressing time of year, when daylight is limited and the weather is often miserable. It is when the winter blues set in. So what can be done to lift our spirits?
The shorter days and longer nights can make us feel down, which can cause us to eat more and exercise less. Some fear loneliness and isolation. Those people who suffer this seasonal mood swing more seriously are described as having the seasonal affective disorder — or SAD for short. It’s a type of depression with a seasonal pattern caused by a shortage of light and is thought to affect the part of the brain that rules sleep, appetite, moods and activity levels.
Jenny Scott-Thompson diagnosed (诊断) with the SAD struggled with periods of tiredness and unhappiness. She was recommended for light therapy (疗法), which involved sitting in front of a light box as well as going outside during daylight hours. This is believed to help anyone who is affected by winter depression.
Although having more light is an obvious cure, antidepressants can help those with more severe depression by artificially raising the amount of serotonin (血清素) in the brain. But this isn’t suitable for everyone, and many of us can try to just change our mindset. Clinical psychologist Laura Keyes says, “It can be helpful to think about how to adapt your eating and exercise patterns to the change of seasons.”
It might sound easier said than done, but accepting winter and thinking positively may energize us. Writing for a social website, Esther De La Ford asks, “What if we explore what this phase of winter has to offer us, instead of being upset about those things that it is taking away?” She suggests we use this time for rest, reflection and slowing down.
28. What is the major cause of winter depression?
A. Eating more. B. Lack of light. C. Less exercise. D. Feeling lonely.
29. According to Paragraph 4, in what way do antidepressants help patients with more severe depression?
A. By increasing the amount of light. B. By changing people’s mindset.
C. By artificially raising brain serotonin levels. D. By advising rest and reflection.
30. How does the author develop his idea in paragraph 5?
A. By describing details. B. By providing evidence.
C. By making a comparison. D. By giving an example.
31. What's this passage mainly about?
A. The types of the SAD. B. The importance of taking action.
C. The causes of winter depression. D. The way to stay cheerful in winter.

There are 7 billion people in this world, with 7 billion different opinions about outer beauty. What you may find physically attractive can be an absolute eyesore to someone else and vice versa. And this is truly magical because it implies that regardless of a person’s physical features , there is always going to be someone out there who finds them appealing.
Nowadays there are many ways you can manipulate the way you look. Plastic surgery (整形) and other cosmetic procedures are becoming more and more accessible and affordable. This is absolutely incredible for people who really need body changes to improve their mental health.
Sadly, with social media being a massive part of our lives, far too many people are struggling with self-image issues not because there is something wrong with them, but because they are convinced they need to look a certain way to be accepted by society. So they delve into (钻研) the world of plastic surgery and they slowly lose their identities in order to fit in.
In reality, what we should be encouraging is not altering our bodies, but remodeling our mindset. We should become more aware of the way we treat others and ourselves. We should be inspired to learn more languages, so we can dive into different cultures and expand our limits. Instead of spending money on looking like someone else, spend time in becoming the best version of yourself, because outer beauty fades, but the beauty within is timeless.
As noted by the book A Conscious Rethink, when asked about what traits (特性) they look for in a potential long-term partner, most people name things that have nothing to do with physical appearance. Some of the features we seek the most are Kindness, Loyalty, Patience, Integrity, A good sense of humor, and A supportive nature.
All of these traits can be found in anyone, regardless of the outer beauty they possess. More importantly, these are personality characteristics we seek in those we see as our potential life partners, meaning that we value them more than we value a pretty face.
32. What does the underlined word “manipulate” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Check. B. Manage. C. Maintain. D. Appreciate.
33. Why are many people seeking plastic surgery nowadays according to the text?
A To improve their mental health. B. To indicate their identities.
C. To adapt to society. D. To cover their physical disability.
34. What’s one feature of inner beauty according to the author?
A. It’s permanent. B. It can be measured.
C. It’s a natural-born thing. D. It varies from culture to culture.
35 Which topic does A Conscious Rethink probably cover?
A. Adventure. B. Healthcare. C. Entertainment. D. Relationship.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据所给内容进行续写,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was deep into the night many years ago. The rain just came pouring down outside. An elderly man and his wife entered the lobby (大厅)of a small hotel in Philadelphia, USA.
Trying to get out of the rain, the couple approached the front desk hoping to get a room to stay in for the night.
“Could you possibly give us a room here?” the husband asked.
The clerk, a friendly young man with a winning smile, looked at the couple and explained that there were three conferences in the town. "All of our rooms are taken," the clerk said. “But I can’t send a nice couple like you out into the rain at one o'clock at night. Would you perhaps be willing to sleep in my room? It's not exactly a suite, but it will be good enough to make you comfortable for the night.”
When the couple declined, the young man pressed on. "Don't worry about me. I'll make out just fine," the clerk told them. So the couple agreed.
As he paid his bill the next morning, the elderly man said to the clerk, “You are the kind of manager who should be the boss of the best hotel. Maybe someday I'll build one for you.”
The clerk looked at them and smiled. The three of them had a good laugh. As they drove away, the elderly couple agreed that the helpful clerk was indeed exceptional, as finding people who are both friendly and helpful isn't easy.
Three years passed. The clerk had almost forgotten the thing when he received a letter from the elderly man. It recalled that stormy night, when he offered his kind help to the elderly couple. In the envelope, there was a round-trip ticket to New York, and a letter asking the young man to pay them a visit. The young man decided to set out immediately.

She was recommended for light therapy (疗法) which involved sitting in front of a light box as well as going outside during daylight hours.
【答案】28. B 29. C 30. D 31. D

A. To improve their mental health. B. To indicate their identities.
C. To adapt to society. D. To cover their physical disability.
34. What’s one feature of inner beauty according to the author?
A. It’s permanent. B. It can be measured.
C. It’s a natural-born thing. D. It varies from culture to culture.
35. Which topic does A Conscious Rethink probably cover?
A. Adventure. B. Healthcare. C. Entertainment. D. Relationship.
【答案】32. B 33. C 34. A 35. D

(他们的年龄都和你一样吗?)”提到你的朋友是否都与你年龄相仿,空后“But you can widen your social circle and gain life-enriching benefits by becoming friends with someone younger or older than you.(但是你可以通过和比你年轻或年长的人成为朋友来扩大你的社交圈并获得丰富生活的好处。)”提到和比自己年长或年轻的人交朋友的好处。由此可知,空处是过渡句,应起到承上启下的作用。D项“当然,和同龄人交朋友是很正常的”与空前相呼应,且与空后内容形成转折,符合语境。故选D。
2. 空前“They have been young parents, have survived a job loss, and can help you get through these changes in your own life.(他们是年轻的父母,在失业中幸存下来,可以帮助你度过生活中的这些变化。)”提到年长的朋友能帮助你度过人生中的转变,这是有年长的朋友的一个好处,空后“Then you’ll feel more ready for what’s coming in future stages.(然后你会觉得对未来的事情做好了更多的准备。)”
3. 空前“When older people make friends with younger people, they get to share their experiences which can be very rewarding.(当年长一些的人与年轻一些的人交朋友时,他们可以分享他们的经历,这可能是非常有益的。)”和空后内容“Giving your wisdom and attention makes you feel better.( 给予你的智慧和关注会让你感觉更好。)”都与分享和给予有关,因此空处内容也应与此相关。A项“对人类来说,给予是件好事”既与上文“share their experiences”相照应,又与下文“Giving your wisdom and attention makes you feel better”相联系。故选A。
4. 从空处所在位置可知该空内容应是对段落内容的概括与总结。根据下文中的“You can first think about your acquaintances or coworkers and see if any of them share your values and interests and would make a good friend. Then see if you can make a coffee date. Besides, you can consider joining in a class that your coworker or acquaintance participates in that you think you will enjoy. (首先,你可以想想你的熟人或同事,看看他们是否和你有同样的价值观和兴趣,是否会成为你的好朋友。然后看看你能不能约个时间喝咖啡。此外,你可以考虑加入一个你的同事或熟人参加的你认为自己会喜欢的课程。)”可知,该段主要介绍了结交年长或更年轻的朋友的方法。C项“那么你如何建立跨代友谊呢?”准确概括了段落主旨。故选C。
5. 根据空前的内容“You can first think about your acquaintances or coworkers and see if any of them share your values and interests and would make a good friend. Then see if you can make a coffee date. Besides, you can consider joining in a class that your coworker or acquaintance participates in that you think you will enjoy.(首先,你可以想想你的熟人或同事,看看他们是否和你有同样的价值观和兴趣,是否会成为你的好朋友。然后看看你能不能约个时间喝咖啡。此外,你可以考虑加入一个你的同事或熟人参加的你认为自己会喜欢的课程。)”可知,该段主要介绍了如何结交年长或更年轻的朋友。空处也应是结交年长或更年轻的朋友的一个方法。F项“参加志愿服务等活动也被认为是一个有效方法”符合语境。故选F。

第二节 (满分25分)

Paragraph 2:
“You must be joking,” the young man said.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
“Do you still remember my promise years ago?” the elderly man said to the young man. The young man was puzzled and remembered nothing of what the elderly man had said years before. He just looked at the elderly man in surprise, shaking his head. “Well,” the elderly man went on. “I promised to build a hotel for you when I left your hotel. You are so kind and so helpful. I'm sure you will turn out to be a good boss in the future. I have firm trust in you.
Paragraph 2:
“You must be joking,” the young man said. “I'm serious,” said the elderly man with a smile around his mouth. He then pointed to a great new building there. “That,” said the elderly man, “is the hotel I have just built for you. I hope you can take charge of it.” Thus, the young clerk became the first manager of the hotel. But he had never expected the turn of events that would lead him to become the manager of one of the world's most famous hotels.
