Our first meeting: Jan. 25, 1990. I was exercising when the terrible news came: Avianca flight 052, a Boeing 707 from Bogota, Colombia, to New York City had crashed on Long Island’s North Shore. Soon the phone rang. It was the hospital: They had declared an emergency and needed me right now. At the hospital, I joined 200 other health-care providers. It was in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) that I met Andrea, an 8-year-old girl with serious injuries. When we visited her, she seemed to be asleep, but as we began to move away, she opened her eyes. “May I ask a question, please?” she asked me in a low voice. “Yes,” I answered instantly. “Am I going to die?” “No.” “May I go to sleep?” “Yes.” Her mother and brother had died in the crash; her father had survived, but he felt unable to go on. I said nothing and just led him to Andrea’s unit. “She needs you.” The father sobbed and nodded. Soon he needed to travel to Colombia to bury his wife and son. During his weeks of absence, I visited Andrea three times daily: before work, after work and at midday. An index card with my name and phone numbers sat at her bedside. When she saw me coming, she would call out my name — “Fornari!” After six weeks, Andrea’s injuries eventually healed. She and her father returned home to Colombia. Nine years later, they visited New York City, and we had a reunion. The 17-year-old young lady shared her desire to become a child psychiatrist like me; she wanted to help and support children the way I had done. In the following years, I thought of her often. And each Jan. 25, I reflected on my experiences with the survivors and their families. In 2010, the 20th anniversary services took place. A generation later, survivors once more thanked their rescuers, and families once again gathered to mourn their lost loved ones. And now here was Andrea’s email, asking whether I remembered her. Absolutely! 24. What can be “our first meeting” regarded as? A. An origin of a special bond. B. An anticipated arrangement. C. A miracle of a narrow escape. D. A required meeting of psychiatrists. 25. How did Andrea feel when she talked to the author? A. Curious and eager to be alive. B. Terrified and uncertain about her survival. C. Lucky but sad about the death of her loved ones. D. Dependent but confused about the author’s words. 26. What was the deepest impact the author had on Andrea probably? A. Andrea sent emails to the author regularly. B. Andrea made contributions to each anniversary. C. Andrea wanted to follow in the author’s footsteps. D. Andrea relied on the author as she did on her father. 27. What can be the best title of the text? A. What could we remember? B. Why did I choose the career? C. What did the crash leave behind? D. How could I forget? C Cities and towns are usually 1–3℃ hotter than the surrounding countryside, because asphalt, concrete and brick absorb heat from the sun and radiate it slowly. Known as the urban heat island (UHI), this effect can be dangerous and even deadly. There’s one simple solution: urban trees. Authorities have planted more trees to reduce the heat. But how effective is this? To find out, we analysed data from nearly 9,000 cities around the world, home to about 3.6 billion people. Our new research shows that trees almost halve how much heat is trapped by the UHI effect. Trees act like natural air conditioners, shading the ground and stopping asphalt and buildings from heating up in the first place. They also cool the air by releasing water vapour (蒸气) from their leaves in a process called transpiration, lowering surrounding temperatures. The effect they have is noticeable. Globally, trees cut the UHI effect by almost 50%. Since the average UHI effect typically adds around 1-3℃, this translates into cooling of roughly 0.5-1.5℃ in many cities. For more than 200 million people, trees reduce local air temperatures by at least 0.5℃, enough to make a meaningful difference during extreme heat. This cooling is welcome, but there is a catch. Trees are not evenly distributed. They’re often concentrated in wealthier neighbourhoods and suburban areas. Cities in more humid climates tend to have more. Leafy suburbs are usually several degrees cooler than nearby neighbourhoods with little vegetation. Also, there’s a strong link with wealth. In the United States, lower-income areas average 15% fewer trees than wealthier areas — and are 1.5℃ hotter. This means the people who need free cooling from trees the most are often the least likely to receive it. Planting trees is often promoted as a simple solution to city heat. Our study shows their effect is more limited in the face of climate change. The world’s current urban trees would, we estimate, offset just 10% of the extra heat expected by mid-century under moderate climate change scenarios (设想). With ambitious planting, this could rise to just around 20%. 28. What is the purpose of the research mentioned in the text? A. To find out the causes of the UHI effect. B. To introduce the concept of the UHI effect. C. To compare regional temperature differences. D. To assess the effectiveness of trees in fighting heat. 29. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A. The statistical evidence of a finding. B. The practical application of a theory. C. The natural mechanism of an approach. D. The basic explanation of a phenomenon. 30. What do the underlined words “a catch” in paragraph 5 most probably mean? A. A rare chance. B. An ethical dilemma. C. A useful method. D. A hidden difficulty. 31. What should be done according to our study? A. More attention should be paid to climate change. B. It is time to abandon planting trees to fight urban heat. C. A large majority of extra heat needs to be removed otherwise. D. The even distribution of trees will become an alternative initiative. D Athletic footwear has entered a new era of ambition. No longer content to promise just comfort or performance, Nike claims its shoes can activate the brain, heighten sensory awareness and even improve concentration by stimulating the bottom of the feet. “By studying perception, attention, and sensory feedback, we’re using the brain-body connection in new ways,” said Nike’s chief science officer. “It’s not just about running faster; it’s about feeling more focused and resilient.” It’s a convincing idea: The feet are rich in sensory receptors, so could stimulating them really sharpen the mind? Neuroscience suggests the reality is more complicated — and far less dramatic — than the marketing implies. The bottom of the feet contains thousands of mechanoreceptors that detect pressure, vibration and movement. Signals from these receptors travel through nerves up to an area of the brain called the somatosensory cortex, which maintains a map of the body. The feet occupy a meaningful part of this map, reflecting their importance in balance, posture, and movement. Because posture and movement are tightly linked to attention and stimulation, changes in sensory feedback from the feet can influence how stable, alert or sensible a person feels. In view of this, neurologists and physicians pay close attention to footwear in patients with balance disorders, neuropathy, or gait problems. Changing sensory input can alter (改变) how people move. But is influencing movement the same thing as enhancing cognition? Sensory input from the feet activates somatosensory regions of the brain, not meaning cognitive enhancement. Focus, attention, and executive function depend on distributed networks involving various other areas of the brain. They also rely on hormones that adjust the nervous system, such as dopamine and norepinephrine. Some studies suggest that mild sensory input may increase alertness in specific populations, such as older adults training to improve their balance or people in recovery for sensory loss, but these effects are modest and highly dependent on context. The most meaningful “mind-altering” effects a person can experience through physical fitness still come from sustained movement, training, sleep and attention, not from sense alone. Footwear may shape how the journey feels, but it is unlikely to change the destination. 32. What is the feature of Nike’s shoes in its claim? A. Offering treatment for patients. B. Stressing comfort and performance. C. Enhancing wearers’ cognition. D. Proving the brain-body connection. 33. What can we learn from Paragraph 4? A. The feet occupy the largest part in the brain’s body map. B. Foot-sensory signals can bring certain sense of alertness. C. Mechanoreceptors are created inside people’s athletic footwear. D. Somatosensory cortex is mainly responsible for hormone release. 34. Which of the following do neurologists might agree with? A. Shoes may not change real cognitive ability. B. Nike has opened a new era of sports science. D. All mind-altering effects come from footwear. C. Solid evidence can help Nike expand the market. 35. What can be implied from the last sentence of the text? A. Nike’s claim is partially overstated. B. Keeping fit is a final destination in life. C. The shape of footwear may be tailored. D. A long journey begins with suitable shoes. 第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 At 5 am, social media fills with proof that the early risers have already won the day. This is the routine that separates high performers from everyone else, reinforced by high-profile early risers such as Apple CEO Tim Cook, entrepreneur Richard Branson and so on. The message is simple: wake earlier, perform better. 36 For many people, a 5 am routine fights with their biology and can weaken both health and productivity. Much depends on your individual biological rhythm, or “chronotype”. Chronotypes reflect when people naturally feel alert or sleepy, and genetics play a major role in shaping them. Research shows that sleep timing is partly rooted in our genes, and chronotype is heritable. 37 Adolescents tend toward later sleep patterns and older adults often get up earlier. Studies often find differences between chronotypes. Morning types tend to report better academic outcomes. They are also less likely to report drug abuse and more likely to exercise regularly. Evening types, on average, show higher rates of burnout and are more likely to report poorer mental and physical health. A common belief is that adopting an early routine will deliver the same benefits seen in natural morning types.  38 They are shaped by genetics and circadian (生理节奏的) biology. For many evening or intermediate types, waking earlier than their natural rhythm can lead to sleep debt, reduced concentration, and poorer mood over time.   39 It is when people’s daily schedules are in line with their biological rhythms that they tend to perform best. Morning-oriented people often thrive in systems structured around early starts, while evening types may struggle not because they are less capable, but because their peak alertness occurs later. Early-rising experiments can feel effective at first. It often reflects motivation and attention rather than lasting biological change, similar to what happens after life changes such as starting a new job. 40 A. It also shifts across the whole life. B. But it is a more complicated story. C. However, chronotypes are not easily changed. D. Morning types have an advantage in their careers. E. A key point is that early rising itself does not create success. F. The patterns reinforce how chronotype shapes daily behaviour. G. With routines stabilising, the initial boost can become harder to last. 第三部分:语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题:每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 It was the last thing I wanted to do: walk around my neighborhood on a hot and sticky July afternoon in search of a floor fan. The summer storm broke without warning. I had booked a taxi through an app, as my train to Edinburgh was due at 5:30. When a yellow car stopped, I got in quickly and checked the phone number and the destination with the driver. Then he pulled into the traffic. We drove in near silence — I was running through my presentation notes, and he seemed focused on the slippery roads. The rain hammered on the roof and the wipers worked hard. About twelve minutes into the ride, I noticed his posture change. He seemed to shift uncomfortably, one hand leaving the wheel to press against his stomach. He slowed down the car and pulled over, turning tome, his face pale. He apologised, saying he had a terrible pain and couldn’t drive any further, so I would have to get out and hail another taxi; he would refund my fare, and he gestured weakly towards the door, adding that I still had time to catch my train. I looked at him — jaw clenched, hand pressed hard against his abdomen (腹部), eyes clouded with pain — and told him he was in no condition to drive and that I was taking him to the hospital. He started to object, mentioning my train, but I cut him off, saying the train could wait. I got out at once, dragged him from the car, helped him lie down on the back seat, then quickly took the driver’s seat, gripped the wheel, signalled, and made a sharp U-turn as the storm raged on. Ahead, the traffic lights turned red. I asked if he had a relative I could call. He gasped out his nephew’s number. With one hand, I dialled and quickly informed the nephew that his uncle was in severe pain — we suspected appendicitis (阑尾炎) — and that we were heading to St. Mary’s; I told him to meet us at A&E. and carried on driving. Behind me, he let out a soft groan (呻吟) but managed a faint whisper of thanks. 注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式作答。 The hospital’s emergency sign finally came into sight. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ Days later, an unfamiliar number lit up my phone. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
