I was the only kid in college with a reason to go to the mail box, because my mother never believed in email, in Facebook, in texting or cell phones. I was literally waiting by the mailbox to get a letter with the warmest comfort from her.
So when I moved to New York and got depressed, I did the only thing I could think of. I wrote those same kinds of letters like my mother for strangers, and tucked them all over the city: in cafes, in libraries, and even in the subway. I blogged about those letters and promised if asked for a hand-written letter, I would write one.
Overnight, my inbox became this harbor of heartbreak—a single mother in Sacramento, a girl being bullied in Kansas, a 22-year-old immigrant, all asking me to write them and give them a reason to wait by the mailbox. And this is how I initiated the act The World Needs More Love Letters.
Today I run a global organization fueled by those trips to the mailbox. It is a miracle. But the thing about these letters is that most of them have been written by people brought up in a paperless world where some best conversations happen on a screen. We have learned to diary our pain onto Facebook, and we speak swiftly on Twitter.
Therefore, I’ve been carrying this mail crate (大木箱) with me these days, which is a magical icebreaker. So I get to tell total strangers about a woman whose husband was traumatized (受精神创伤) from war, and how she left love letters throughout the house saying, “Come back to me.” And a man, who had decided to take his life, slept safely with a stack of letters just beneath his pillow, handwritten by strangers who were there for him.
These stories convince me that letter-writing will never need to be about efficiency, because it is an art now, all of it: the signing, the scripting, the mailing.
24. Why did the author share her experience in college?
A. To prove her writing consistency.
B. To criticize digital communication.

25. What caused the author to launch the act?
A. She advocated the paperless lifestyle.
B. She intended to provide professional aid.
C. She tried to improve her communication skills.
D. She aimed to give emotional support with letters.
26. Why does the author call the mail crate “a magical icebreaker”?
A. It has magic power to melt ice.
B. It empowers people to be brave.
C. It serves as a conversation starter.
D. It helps to solve mental problems.
27. What is the author’s attitude towards letter-writing in the digital age?
A. Neutral B. Favorable C. Critical D. Indifferent

Scientists in the Netherlands have created a soft-bodied robot that’s powered by air.
When you think of a robot, you might picture something with a lot of sensors, and inflexible metal arms controlled by a computer. But scientists at the AMOLF institute in the Netherlands have come up with a robot that has no brain and no sensors.
“I was in the lab, working on another project, and had to bend a tube to stop air from going through it. The tube started oscillating (振荡) loudly at very high frequency,” says Alberto Comoretto, a roboticist. Then, he set up a high-speed camera and recorded the movement. He found that when there was a kink (扭结) in the tube, the increasing pressure pushed that kink along the tube’s length. That caused the pressure to decrease, which enabled a new kink to appear and the cycle to repeat. Comoretto’s team was excited as the waving tube shared airflow physics with the famous dancing “Fly guys” at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Comoretto’s team decided to build a robot using the Fly guys’ physics to achieve natural, almost lifelike movement. They finally made it. The robot can cover a distance equal to thirty times its body length in a second. That’d be like the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, running the 100-meter race in 1.71 seconds. It can go over uneven ground. Hitting a wall, it turns on its own. When dropped into water, it begins moving in a new way that allows it to swim.
“Now when it hits a wall, it starts to turn left. If it lands in water, it starts to swim backwards. We didn’t come up with that — it just happens,” says Johannes Overvelde, a AMOLF researcher. “We understand the system but need a better grasp of how to design specific functionalities.” And this grasp will be needed for any applications that require something more than tiny robots that can run, swim, or both. This is what the team invests more to address next.
28. Why did Comoretto record the tube by using the high-speed camera?
A. To observe its airflow speed. B. To analyze its movement causes.
C. To examine its material properties. D. To measure its oscillation frequency.
29. What is one feature of Comoretto’s robot?
A. It copies human arm motions any time. B. It moves much faster than Usain Bolt.
C. It needs training for an extended period. D. It adjusts automatically to its conditions.
30. What is the team’s remaining challenge according to Overvelde?
A. Designing the robots of larger sizes. B. Increasing the robot’s movement speed.
C. Trying to control the robot’s behavior. D. Reducing production costs for the robot.
31. What’s the best title for the text?
A. A Brainless Soft Robot Running on Air B. The Physics Behind Air-powered Systems
C. From Lab accident to Robot Innovation D. Future Applications of Soft-bodied Robots
D
During World War II, mathematician Alan Turing gathered a team of logic experts to decode enemy messages, a key step toward victory. If there was one branch of mathematics which could be said they were using systematically, it was symbolic logic. However, the curriculum designs that methodically develop students’ symbolic logic abilities are relatively rare.
Symbolic logic is a form of mathematics that lets us check whether certain conclusions correctly follow from a set of facts. Consider a library book-theft case. If a suspect wasn’t in the library on the day the theft happened, they can’t be the thief. If present, they may or may not be. Being in the library doesn’t mean they stole the book. Symbolic logic turns this kind of argument into algebra (代数学), readily shared, solved and generalized for solving mysteries.
For careers such as electrical engineering and computer science, the value of symbolic logic is undeniable. The fundamental building blocks of modern digital computers are circuits representing “AND” and “OR”, which are common in symbolic logic. Almost every computer program contains similar “if-then-else” logical conditions. Professional programmers must routinely write and troubleshoot such statements.
But symbolic logic is not solely limited to technical fields. Rutgers University mathematician Gray Wenger argues that teaching responsible citizenship requires providing students with mathematical reasoning skills. For example, consider a debate over a study finding that most adults without high-school certificates earn less. A responsible citizen must think through the implications along the lines of the book-theft case example above. No certificate likely means lower income, but low income doesn’t mean no certificate. Training in symbolic logic makes these sorts of reasonings sink into their cognitive processes and become second nature to citizens.
In addition, symbolic logic equips individuals to counter false claims by distinguishing between separate incidents and systematic evidence. The most effective strategy for this lies in preventive education — teaching people to recognize faulty reasoning at its source. Consider, for instance, some global-warming doubters use one day of cold weather as proof that global warming is a hoax (骗局). But a logical thinker can quickly spot that weather is short-term, while climate is long-term change.
Some doubt the need for a separate symbolic logic course, believing other classes can do the job. In writing courses, for example, students learn how to spot illogical arguments, and elementary proofs are covered in trigonometry (三角学). Much can be gained by teaching people logical thinking without using any symbols. But only symbolic logic ensures logical strictness. A piecemeal approach isn’t enough; a full-semester course is needed for comprehensive learning.
Symbolic logic is essential for intellectual development. By integrating symbolic logic into educational frameworks we equip future generations with the intellectual tools to navigate complex challenges. Training for it must be included in the curriculum and cannot be left to chance.
32. According to the passage, symbolic logic can play a primary role when ________.
A. a chef is creating a new recipe by combining different materials
B. a doctor is identifying one’s illness by using signs and test findings
C. a student is deciding which club to join based on personal interests
D. a journalist is writing a feature article by interviewing local people
33. The phrase “second nature” in Paragraph 4 implies that symbolic logic training helps citizens to ________.
A. follow social rules without questioning
B. perform logical reasoning automatically
C. prioritize rationality over emotions in daily life
D. memorize common argument patterns mechanically
34. From the passage, we learn that symbolic logic ________.
A. tells the difference between separate incidents
B. is mainly applied in solving mathematical puzzles
C. questions the basic principles of modern computers
D. enables people to detect and challenge false arguments
35. The author may agree that current symbolic logic education is ________.
A. manageable and will improve naturally
B. acceptable if alternative courses are available
C. unsatisfying for the lack of symbolic logic courses
D. problematic and ignores logical reasoning practice

Emily Harper sat at her desk, staring blankly at the math problems in front of her. Numbers and variables danced confusingly across the page, laughing at her every effort. At school, Emily was known for her artistic talents, but math had always been her weakness. No matter how hard she tried, she just couldn’t make sense of it.
Her struggles only worsened in the 10th grade. The pressure to keep up with her classmates grew, and the poor grades shook her confidence. Her parents decided to step in. “We need to find you some help,” her mother gently suggested one evening.
Then came Mr. Jenkins, a retired local teacher known for his unique teaching style. Emily was initially resistant; the idea of spending extra hours on a subject she hated seemed like a punishment. But she unwillingly agreed, knowing something had to change.
Their first session was tense. Mr. Jenkins, sensing her frustration, didn’t dive straight into problems. Instead, he asked about her interests. When Emily spoke passionately about her painting, he smiled. “Math is like art, Emily. It has patterns and beauty if you know where to look.”
Doubtful but inspired, Emily listened as he began to explain concepts through visual examples. He used colors and shapes, turning abstract numbers into something almost tangible (有形的). For the first time, math seemed less like a foreign language and more like a puzzle waiting to be solved.
However, progress was slow. Weeks passed with, minimal improvement, and Emily’s patience wore thin. A particularly difficult quiz left her in tears, convinced she was sure to fail. Mr Jenkins said, “Remember, Emily, every artist starts with a blank canvas. Masterpieces aren’t created overnight. ”
Encouraged by his firm belief, Emily pushed on. She began to see the connections between the steps, how each solution followed a logical path. Small victories in practice problems gave her some hope. Mr. Jenkins was always there, celebrating her successes, no matter how minor.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Gradually, Emily’s confidence grew with Mr. Jenkins’ help.

C. To describe her financial struggles.
D. To show her emotional bond with letters.
Critical D. Indifferent
D 25. D 26. C 27. B

B 29. D 30. C 31. A
根据第三段中的“The tube started oscillating loudly at very high frequency,” says Alberto Comoretto, a roboticist. Then, he set up a high-speed camera and recorded the movement. He found that when there was a kink in the tube, the increasing pressure pushed that kink along the tube’s length. That caused the pressure to decrease, which enabled a new kink to appear and the cycle to repeat.(“管子开始以非常高的频率大声振荡,”机器人专家Alberto Comoretto说。
根据第四段中的“It can go over uneven ground. Hitting a wall, it turns on its own. When dropped into water, it begins moving in a new way that allows it to swim.(它能在不平坦的地面上行走。撞到墙,它会自己转弯。当被放入水中时,它会开始以一种新的方式移动,从而能够游泳。)”可知,这款机器人的一个特点是能根据环境自动调整。故选D项。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的““Now when it hits a wall, it starts to turn left. If it lands in water, it starts to swim backwards. We didn’t come up with that — it just happens,” says Johannes Overvelde, a AMOLF researcher. “We understand the system but need a better grasp of how to design specific functionalities.”(“现在,当它撞到墙时,就会开始向左转。如果落入水中,它就会开始向后游。这些都不是我们设计的——只是自然发生的,”AMOLF研究所的研究员Johannes Overvelde说,“我们了解这个系统,但还需要更好地掌握如何设计特定的功能。”)”可知,根据Overvelde的说法,团队剩下的挑战是尝试控制机器人的行为。故选C项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“A scientists in the Netherlands have created a soft-bodied robot that’s powered by air.(荷兰科学家创造了一种由空气驱动的软体机器人。)”和第二段中的“But scientists at the AMOLF institute in the Netherlands have come up with a robot that has no brain and no sensors.(但荷兰AMOLF研究所的科学家们研制出了一种没有大脑和传感器的机器人。)” 故选A项。

By integrating symbolic logic into educational frameworks, we equip future generations with the intellectual tools to navigate complex challenges. Training for it must be included in the curriculum and cannot be left to chance.
32. According to the passage, symbolic logic can play a primary role when ________.
A. a chef is creating a new recipe by combining different materials
B. a doctor is identifying one’s illness by using signs and test findings
C. a student is deciding which club to join based on personal interests
D. a journalist is writing a feature article by interviewing local people
33. The phrase “second nature” in Paragraph 4 implies that symbolic logic training helps citizens to ________.
A. follow social rules without questioning
B. perform logical reasoning automatically
C. prioritize rationality over emotions in daily life
D. memorize common argument patterns mechanically
34. From the passage, we learn that symbolic logic ________.
A. tells the difference between separate incidents
B. is mainly applied in solving mathematical puzzles
C. questions the basic principles of modern computers
D. enables people to detect and challenge false arguments
35. The author may agree that current symbolic logic education is ________.
A. manageable and will improve naturally
B. acceptable if alternative courses are available
C. unsatisfying for the lack of symbolic logic courses
D. problematic and ignores logical reasoning practice
B 33. B 34. D 35. C

根据第四段“Training in symbolic logic makes these sorts of reasonings sink into their cognitive processes and become second nature to citizens. (对符号逻辑的训练能够让这类推理融入公民的认知过程,并使其成为他们的second nature。)”可知,这里指的是通过训练,这些推理过程变得自然而然,成为公民的一种自动能力。因此,second nature在此处意为“天性,自动的能力”,与perform logical reasoning automatically“自动进行逻辑推理”意思相符。故选B。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“In addition, symbolic logic equips individuals to counter false claims by distinguishing between separate incidents and systematic evidence. The most effective strategy for this lies in preventive education — teaching people to recognize faulty reasoning at its source. (此外,符号逻辑使个人能够通过区分个别事件和系统性证据来反驳虚假声明。最有效策略在于预防性教育——教导人们从源头上识别错误的推理。)”可知,符号逻辑使人们能够检测和挑战错误的论点。故选D。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段“Some doubt the need for a separate symbolic logic course, believing other classes can do the job.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Gradually, Emily’s confidence grew with Mr. Jenkins’ help.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Emily’s heart raced when the results day arrived.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Gradually, Emily’s confidence grew with Mr. Jenkins’ help. She found herself approaching math problems with a newfound curiosity instead of anxiety. The once confusing numbers and symbols began to become patterns she could understand. Mr. Jenkins continued to teach her in his unique way. Emily started to enjoy the challenge, and her once hesitant hand now moved steadily across the paper. The joy she felt when a solution clicked into place was something she had never expected to experience with math.
Emily’s heart raced when the results day arrived. She sat in the classroom, her hands trembling slightly as she received her test paper. Her eyes widened in disbelief as she saw the grade — a solid A. Tears of relief and happiness welled up in her eyes. She looked up at Mr. Jenkins, who stood at the back of the classroom, watching her with a proud smile. In that moment, Emily knew that she had not only conquered her fear of math but also discovered the power of perseverance.
