Attending a networking event at a restaurant to make small talk with strangers in hopes of making lasting connections is one of the most frightening things that I can imagine doing. When I went to these events, I was uncertain about how to connect with others.
I spent my 20’s and 30’s collecting and studying books on how to network, form friendships and build character. Yet, my networking skills didn’t improve at all.
There had to be a better way to build relationships. Carol Blymire, my instructor at Georgetown University, showed me that there was, according to her, the best way to build your network while also making friends is to join groups that focus on your hobbies. “For example, if you like to go swing dancing, you should join a swing dancing group,” Blymire told me. So I decided to start a book club that would put book lovers like me in the same room together.
I posted the notice of my first weekly meeting on Meetup.com in April 2022. Luckily, my two invited friends came, and we were joined by one other person we didn’t know. After the first event, more people started coming, and I started making new friends almost immediately. Then, in early October 2022, I hosted a party for my book club friends. 24 people showed up and I was excited. Today, close to 700 people have joined my Meetup group. I have made lots of connections within the first year alone.
My experience as a meeting organizer has taught me that I shouldn’t judge (判断) how connected I am to the world around me based on the number of people I know, but by the quality of my friendships. Building friendships takes time and effort, but I’ve discovered that it is possible to make real friends as an adult. One of the friends I made at my book club even toasted (为……举杯敬酒) my wife and me at our wedding (婚礼).

Students and teachers came together to paint something on glass in a community effort to reduce window strikes during the fall migration (迁徙).
The windows at E.J. Pratt Library just got a bird-friendly improvement, after students painted white trees on the glass to help keep birds from crashing into Victoria University’s beautiful buildings.
A partnership between BirdSafe U of T and Victoria University in the University of Toronto, the bird-friendly building initiative (倡议) event brought together students and teachers who care about protecting the birds that share our space. The window-treatment process included drawing dense (密集的), high-contrast patterns on the outside surface, which can help break up the reflection and warn birds about the glass. The goal is to reduce the number of bird-window collision fatalities (撞击死亡事故) on Vic U’s campus this fall migration.
Hearing the concerns (担忧) about bird safety on Vic U’s campus from students and teachers, Kam Jahresi, senior manager of campus operations, helped organize the event with BirdSafe U of T. Students and teachers set up prints of the bird-friendly drawings, using them as guides to paint the outside windows of E.J. Pratt Library. Vic U’s president Rhonda McEwen also joined the event.
Jahremi was thankful for the community support. “Students loved both the art and the event’s environmental focus,” he said. “They are interested in taking part in similar events in the future! The partnership shows that sustainability (可持续性) is a team effort.”
BirdSafe U of T co-creator Carly Davenport was gratified to see the results of the event. “Everyone showed interest in our cause and took part,” she said. “It was great to speak with students from different backgrounds who came to learn about the event.”

Ever wondered how many calories (卡路里) are on your plate? Cal AI, a smart fitness app, provides fast answers. Simply take a picture of the food, and the app will provide you with an accurate (准确的) calorie count to help you make smarter eating decisions.
Cal AI is the brainchild of Zach Yadegari. The 18-year-old teenager came up with the idea in 2023 after having a hard time with traditional calorie-counting apps. “I was tracking calories on MyFitnessPal,” he explains. “After three days, I stopped. I was having so much trouble using their app, typing in everything — it took so much time.”
In order to find a better way, Yadegari teamed up with some high school friends to build a simpler, more accurate tool. They focused on accurate calorie counting. They trained Cal AI using pictures from three different AI models. This helped it to recognize what’s in packaged foods and meals like mixed bowls. The final challenge was estimating portion sizes (估算分量). This was solved by comparing user photos to standard portions. The developers say that Cal AI is 90% accurate in recognizing foods and counting calories.
Since it came out in May 2024, Cal AI has been downloaded (下载) over five million times. More than 30% of users continue to use the app. In February 2025 alone, it brought in over $2 million, and the numbers continue to grow.
Most of Cal AI’s popularity comes from online marketing. Yadegari uses his own social media (社交媒体) to find fitness influencers who can help share Cal AI with their followers. As a result, Cal AI is especially popular among young users aged 15–25.
Yadegari will graduate from high school this summer. Although he has been accepted to many universities, he plans to take a year off to focus on Cal AI, which now has 17 workers. His goals include improving the app’s accuracy to over 90% and drawing users of all ages.
12. What is Cal AI mainly used for?
A. Delivery foods. B. Counting calories.
C. Sharing cooking skills. D. Offering exercise instructions.
13. How can users get Cal AI to work?
A. By taking photos. B. By giving voice directions.
C. By typing in their food choices. D. By feeding their health information.
14. What do the numbers in paragraph 4 show about Cal AI?
A. It has been questioned by the public. B. It has few users.
C. It is highly accurate. D. It is well received.
15. What will Yadegari do with Cal AI next?
A. Enter a competition with it. B. Bring down its costs.
C. Grow its user group. D. Rewrite it.

On a Sunday morning,Tony woke up to a quiet house. Usually Mom was awake making breakfast and cleaning the kitchen, but not today. You can have cereal(燕麦)for breakfast and watch cartoons. I'm going to stay in bed. ”
Tony poured some cereal into a bowl and ate the pieces dry. Mom must feel very bad if she was staying in bed all day. How could Tony help?First,he wiped up the crumbs of cereal he left on the kitchen counter. He also put away the cereal box neatly,so the kitchen looked just as it did when he woke up. But what else could he do?Tony thought. Sunday was the day when mom did laundry. Tony loved to watch the clothes spinning in the machine. That should be fun! He ran to his room to get the laundry basket, inside which there was his mother's favorite white dress, among other clothes and a pair of red socks.
Tony opened the door to the washer and put the clothes inside. He had watched Mom do laundry lots of times,so he knew where to find the washing powder and how to pour it into the machine. Finally,he closed the door and pressed the big button that said “START". Tony looked through the round glass window. Water was pouring in,and the machine was starting to spin, making his clothing tumble around. That was easy!.
Tony watched cartoons until he heard the washing machine beep. That meant the washing was done. Tony opened the door to take out the damp clothes. He took out a few at a time and moved them into the dryer. Everything seemed clean, and Tony felt proud. Then he pulled out a pink dress.

14 What do the numbers in paragraph 4 show about Cal AI?

At the sound of his mom coughing,Tony knocked on her bedroom door and asked with great concern,“Mom,are you OK?” “Honey,” Mom said weakly. “I have a terrible cold.

【答案】One possible version:
But as far as he could remember, there was no pink dress in the laundry basket. “Where did it come from?"Tony wondered, reaching into the washer to take out more clothes. Then much to his astonishment,he pulled out two T-shirts,both in light pink. Realizing there was something wrong,Tony stood frozen, his heart sinking. While racking his brain for reasons,he caught sight of the red socks, and it suddenly occurred to him that they must be to blame for it. With no means of handling the situation,Tony was in such a panic that he even thought of hiding the dress from his mom. "That isn't a positive approach to the problem,” he reminded himself. Finally,he decided to dry and fold the laundry before telling his mom everything.
Tony nervously knocked at his mom's bedroom door again, with the pink dress in her arms. After what seemed like ages,he came to the bedside, his head drooping. Sensing his son's unease, his mother inquired with concern what was wrong. "Sorry mom,I shouldn't have ruined your favorite dress. ” Tony apologized. Stuttering out the mistake he had made,he was ready to get a good scolding for his wrongdoing. Realizing what was going on,mom smiled understandingly at Tony,"Never mind, dear. I know you meant to help. ” Then mom held the dress up before her and said in an approving tone,"You know what?I think it looks nice. " At this Tony beamed with relief, making a silent vow to be more careful in helping his mom out next time.
