Last summer, she cried at the amusement park because she was too small to go on roller coasters (过山车) or other rides. Other children laughed at her because she is tiny compared with her friends. But you know what? She is especially good at swimming, and she moves through the water “like a fish”. In fact, Vivi is such a good swimmer that she has been chosen for the local team and will take part in national competitions. Vivi is proud of her strength. She knows that being small doesn’t matter. Vivi says, “In the water, I am the same size as everyone else.” The message is that everyone, whatever their size, shape or skills, has something great to offer. So children, go back to your classrooms and enjoy discovering what makes you special!

After years spent running and dieting, Casey Johnston came across a post about weightlifting.
“I don’t lift to be attractive. I lift to be strong,” Johnston recalls one devoted powerlifter posting.
“Liar,” Johnston thought to herself. “After all, isn’t attractiveness the reason why most people work out?”
Johnston wanted to look attractive in college. She tried, at first, just dieting. That didn’t get her all the way to where she thought she should be — weight-wise. Then she started running. She was running more and more and eating less and less, but sort of staying in the same place. She just had the impression that she should always be losing weight.
Then she learned that what had happened through all of this weight-loss pursuit was that she had dieted and exercised away all of her lean body mass She thought her muscles were just there waiting to be uncovered if she lost enough weight. It turned out that, actually, if you aren’t protecting your muscles actively, they can go away.
While running, Johnston found it punishing, but it was a way to achieve one goal that consumed her: not being fat. She had absorbed the cultural message that the purpose of exercise was to make her as small as possible.
Johnston admits that she was first drawn to weightlifting for the same reason. But gradually, she discovered strength training could offer more.
She says lifting weights helped repair her disordered eating and allowed her to enjoy food. “When I gave it a chance, with these basic elements, I found it transformative. That work of looking closer and listening to myself is worth the time,” she shares. “Most importantly, it changed my attitude about my own body, from one centered on denial of pleasure to a relationship that now embraces movement, rest and eating equally. My body could feel good, even powerful.”
24. How did Johnston find the post at first?
A. Inspiring. B. Ordinary. C. Innovative. D. Unconvincing.
25. What was the outcome of Johnston’s dieting and running in college?
A. She became too weak to study. B. She gained more lean body mass.
C. She didn’t look the way she had expected. D. She lost more weight than planned.
26. Why did Johnston start to learn to lift weights?
A. For weight loss. B. For education.
C. For entertainment. D. For cultural exchange.
27. What is the focus of the last paragraph?
A. How Johnston became more attractive. B. How weightlifting benefited Johnston.
C. How Johnston trained for weightlifting. D. How exercise pressure affected Johnston.
D 25. C 26. A 27. B
根据第二段“I don’t lift to be attractive. I lift to be strong.(我举重不是为了好看,而是为了强壮。)”以及第三段““Liar,” Johnston thought to herself. “After all, isn’t attractiveness the reason why most people work out?”(“骗子,”约翰斯顿心里想,“毕竟,吸引力难道不是大多数人锻炼的原因吗?”)”
根据第四段中的“Johnston wanted to look attractive in college. She tried, at first, just dieting. That didn’t get her all the way to where she thought she should be — weight-wise. Then she started running. She was running more and more and eating less and less, but sort of staying in the same place.(约翰斯顿在大学时想让自己看起来有吸引力。起初她只尝试节食,但体重方面并没有达到她认为应该达到的状态。然后她开始跑步,跑得越来越多、吃得越来越少,却似乎一直停在原地。)” 可知,Johnston大学时节食和跑步的结果是,她并没有变成自己预期的样子。故选C。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第七段中的“Johnston admits that she was first drawn to weightlifting for the same reason.(约翰斯顿承认,她最初被举重吸引也是出于同样的原因。)” 故选A。
根据最后一段“She says lifting weights helped repair her disordered eating and allowed her to enjoy food. ‘When I gave it a chance, with these basic elements, I found it transformative. That work of looking closer and listening to myself is worth the time,’ she shares. ‘Most importantly, it changed my attitude about my own body, from one centered on denial of pleasure to a relationship that now embraces movement, rest and eating equally. My body could feel good, even powerful.’(她说举重有助于修复她不健康的饮食习惯,让她享受食物。
C
Last week, the Los Angeles Unified School District became the largest in US to pass a districtwide cellphone ban (禁止). For teachers, this is great news. For many kids, it’s less welcome. Parents, meanwhile, are conflicted, caught between wanting their children to learn with concentration and worried about losing the easy communication to which they’ve grown used.
Smartphones undoubtedly hold back students’ attention to exploring the unknown or close reading a Shakespearean poem. A 2023 study by Common Sense Media showed that teens check their phones more than 100 times a day on average. On top of the hundreds of messages lighting up screens and breaking in class lectures, teens now spend 4.8 hours on social media each day. The study also makes it obviously clear that students have difficulty in controlling their smartphone use, which seriously influences their focus and mental (心理上的) health.
Yet many parents remain careful of banning phones during the school day. They are afraid that doing so would cut communication between them and their children — not only when they want to organize pickups or drop-offs but also in case of a sudden serious situation.
Schools have managed to operate well without smartphones for centuries. For worried parents, providing their children with traditional cellphones, these days called “dumbphones”, might be the best choice: schools might consider whether selective (选择性的) phone bans that allow such devices could work. Or parents could get even more old-fashioned and simply call their school’s office when necessary.
The next question for schools is how to ban cellphones. A popular choice is requiring the use of magnetic bags that lock in the morning and unlock when the final bell rings, or in case of dangerous situations.
When smartphone bans are done right, they can be helpful to both schools and students. At Bethlehem Central High School near Albany, N.Y., for example, students’ grades have improved since applying a ban last fall. Students are more focused on studies. Parents have even said they’re surprised at the success of the newly phone-free school.
28. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “conflicted” in paragraph 1?
A. Supportive of sth. B. Worried about sth.
C. Not knowing what to do. D. Not good at some things.
29. What does the author mainly want to express in paragraph 2?
A. Parents should help their teens control screen time.
B. Heavy usage of smartphones badly influences students.
C. Text is a main method of communication for teens.
D. It’s important for students to learn Shakespeare’s poems.
30. What can schools do for worried parents according to paragraph 4?
A. Allow students to carry dumbphones.
B. Offer traditional phones to students.
C. Encourage them to shout outside window.
D. Set up public phone stations at school for teens.
31. Why is Bethlehem Central High School mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To praise the school’s achievements.
B. To stress the key to improving students’ studies.
C. To explain why parents accept smartphone bans.
D. To show smartphone bans can really make a difference.
C 29. B 30. A 31. D
根据划线单词下文的内容“caught between wanting their children to learn with concentration and worried about losing the easy communication to which they’ve grown used(一方面想让孩子专心学习,另一方面又担心失去他们已经习惯的轻松沟通方式)”可知,父母处于两难境地:一方面希望孩子集中精力学习,另一方面又担心失去便捷的沟通方式。
根据第二段的内容“A 2023 study by Common Sense Media showed that teens check their phones more than 100 times a day on average. On top of the hundreds of messages lighting up screens and breaking in class lectures, teens now spend 4.8 hours on social media each day. The study also makes it obviously clear that students have difficulty in controlling their smartphone use, which seriously influences their focus and mental
根据第四段的句子“For worried parents, providing their children with traditional cellphones, these days called ‘dumbphones’, might be the best choice: schools might consider whether selective (选择性的) phone bans that allow such devices could work.(对于忧心忡忡的家长来说,给孩子提供传统手机(如今被称为“非智能手机”)可能是最好的选择:学校可能会考虑是否有选择地禁止使用这类设备。)” 故选A项。
最后一段的句子“At Bethlehem Central High School near Albany, N.Y., for example, students’ grades have improved since applying a ban last fall. Students are more focused on studies. Parents have even said they’re surprised at the success of the newly phone-free school.(例如,在纽约州奥尔巴尼附近的Bethlehem Central High School,自去年秋天实施禁令以来,学生的成绩有所提高。学生们更专注于学习。家长们甚至表示,他们对这所新的无手机学校的成功感到惊讶。)”提到Bethlehem Central High School自去年秋季实施手机禁令后,学生的成绩有所提高,学生更专注于学习,父母也对无手机学校的成功感到惊讶。因此,提到这所学校是为了说明手机禁令确实可以产生积极的影响。故选D项。
D
Smart T.rex is for the birds, scientists claim. We know that Tyrannosaurus rex was strong, with strong jaws (下巴).We know it was scary, with big teeth. But was the king of the dinosaurs also clever?
This is the question that has divided scientists, ever since a paper was published last year that argued the dinosaur might have had intelligence comparable to that of a monkey. Now, researchers from an international team have re-analyzed that information, and their findings are disappointing for those who rather liked the idea that behind its sharp teeth lay a sharp mind.
The disagreement comes down to how many neurons (神经元) a T.rex had. That was the argument made last year by neuroscientists from Vanderbilt University in the U.S. By looking at the skull (颅骨) space of dinosaurs including T.rex, and mapping that on to those of living relatives, they decided it had a brain similar to a modern monkey’s.
While Kai Caspar, a zoologist at Heinrich Heine University, does not deny the scariness of the T.rex, his new study is, he believes, a corrective to the idea that scariness came with notable cleverness. His team made sure of two areas of disagreement with the U.S. study.
The first is about how much of the skull is brain. Birds pack their skulls with neurons, but reptiles (爬行动物) such as crocodiles do not. Most of their skulls is not brain, Caspar says its brain looked a lot more crocodile-like, than bird-like. The second disagreement is about the thickness of brain in the part that does have neurons. Here there was more room for disagreement as no soft body parts remained. If it has a brain like a bird’s, it might have a billion neurons. If it was like a modern reptile, it would be a third of that. He thinks it is the latter.
This did not mean it was stupid, he said, as reptiles could perform difficult behaviors. “We do not look down upon it by saying it’s a reptile grade intelligence. Certainly not. It was a difficult animal, for sure.” Caspar said.
32. What was discovered about the T.rex in the rethink of the old information?
A. It was as clever as a monkey. B. It was the king of dinosaurs.
C. It was not as clever as expected. D. It had sharp teeth and sharp mind.
33. What is the key to deciding whether T.rex is intelligent?
A. The number of neurons. B. The space of its skull.
C. Its scariness. D. Its skull size.
34. What does paragraph 5 tell us about the U.S. study and the new study?
A. Their achievements. B. Their disagreements.
C. Their similarities. D. Their research methods.
35. What does Caspar think of T.rex?
A. It’s clever. B. It’s heavy-headed. C. It’s simple. D. It’s respectable.
C 33. A 34. B 35. D

根据第二段中的“Now, researchers from an international team have re-analyzed that information, and their findings are disappointing for those who rather liked the idea that behind its sharp teeth lay a sharp mind. (现在,一个国际研究团队重新分析了这些信息,他们的发现让那些宁愿相信霸王龙锋利牙齿背后藏着敏锐头脑的人感到失望。)” 以及后文新研究指出霸王龙大脑更接近爬行动物而非鸟类(智力较低)可知,重新分析旧信息后发现,霸王龙并不像预期的那么聪明,故选C。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The disagreement comes down to how many neurons (神经元) a T.rex had. That was the argument made last year by neuroscientists from Vanderbilt University in the U.S. (分歧的核心在于霸王龙有多少个神经元。这是去年美国范德堡大学的神经科学家提出的观点。)” 可知,判断霸王龙是否聪明的关键在于其神经元的数量,故选A。
【34题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第五段中的“The first is about how much of the skull is brain. Birds pack their skulls with neurons, but reptiles (爬行动物) such as crocodiles do not. (第一个分歧在于颅骨中有多少空间是用于容纳大脑的。鸟类的颅骨中布满了神经元,但鳄鱼等爬行动物则并非如此。)”以及“The second disagreement is about the thickness of brain in the part that does have neurons. Here there was more room for disagreement as no soft body parts remained. If it has a brain like a bird’s, it might have a billion neurons. (第二个分歧涉及大脑中存在神经元的那部分区域的厚度。由于(恐龙的)软组织并未留存下来,这一点存在较大的争议空间。如果霸王龙的大脑结构与鸟类相似,它可能拥有10亿个神经元。)” 可知,第五段主要阐述了美国研究与新研究之间的两处分歧,故选B。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“This did not mean it was stupid, he said, as reptiles could perform difficult behaviors. ‘We do not look down upon it by saying it’s a reptile grade intelligence. Certainly not. It was a difficult animal, for sure.’ Caspar said. (他说,这并不意味着霸王龙很笨,因为爬行动物也能完成复杂的行为。卡斯帕表示:‘我们不会因为说它拥有爬行动物水平的智力就看不起它。当然不会。毫无疑问,它是一种不好对付的动物。’)” 可知,卡斯帕认为霸王龙并非愚笨,且承认它是“不好对付的动物”,由此可推断他认为霸王龙是值得尊敬的。故选D。

The driving routes on this list are open to the public and don’t require any special skills. Go out, explore and enjoy driving!
The Atlantic Road
Norway
The 5-mile road runs through an archipelago (群岛) of the Norwegian Sea, having eight impressive bridges on the way. It’s a popular place for car companies to film advertisements.
Ring of Kerry

This 111-mile roadway offers a mix of scenery and history, with landscapes ranging from the shores of the Atlantic Ocean to deep forests. Parts of the road date back to 10,000 years ago and roadway stops include the island monastery (修道院) of Skellig Michael and the Iron-Age Staigue stone fort.
Million Dollar Highway
Colorado
The impressive views along this 25-mile highway are reasonable enough to make a point of taking the route. Colorado provides plenty of opportunities along the way like hiking, camping, rock climbing, snowshoeing and whitewater rafting. Stop in Durango or Telluride to enjoy Western U. S. shopping.
National Route A006
Las Cuevas, Argentina
If you are fond of carving curves (弯道) , National Route A006, which is about 5.3 miles long, is the place to be.
35 What does Caspar think of T.rex?
A. It’s clever. B. It’s heavy-headed. C. It’s simple. D. It’s respectable.

For me, how a phone works is the most important. Having a great camera is one of the things I will look out for, because I love taking photos. I think phones look so similar these days, so i'm not really interested in being cool. I think I should learn from that. What else, though, what makes you choose one phone over another? Probably fast charging support. I have to run to the grocery store now, but you should visit a mobile phone store and asked to try a few different models out.
