Cookie-consent pop-ups are one of the biggest annoyances on the Internet.Typically,we
click“yes”or“agree”without even thinking about it because we're eager to get to the
content. There are a few occasions, though, where you should decline cookies.
Sketchy sites
Beware while using a public Wi-Fi network. The information collected by cookies can be
intercepted by hackers because there isn't any security to stop them.Your best bet when
borrowing Wi-Fi from your local coffee shop or fast-food joint is to use your browser's private
mode. While in this mode, cookies aren't collected by default,no matter where your Internet
journeys take you.
Third-party cookies
If the cookie-consent pop-up mentions third-party cookies,click "decline."Accepting
gives the website the right to sell your browsing behaviour to a data broker. The broker then
combines your behaviour on one website with information from other websites and builds an
extremely detailed profile of you as a consumer."The broker then sells that profile to other
third parties who want to market to people like you, says Harry Maugans,CEO of Privacy
Bee."As you can imagine, this chain extends infinitely.Once you lose control of your
personal data,it gets packaged and repackaged in all kinds of ways."
This can put you at risk of identity theft if hackers manage to steal cookies that store your
personal information or credit card information.
When you're using private information
According to Jeremy Tillman, president of the privacy company Ghostery, you should
avoid cookies on sites where you do your banking, access your medical information,or use
other private information.
If you're afraid that you've already accepted cookies on websites where you wouldn't want
your information gathered,go into your browser and use the "clear cookies"option. This will
prevent sites from collecting your information in the future,as long as you decline the next
time a site asks you to accept its cookies.
21.Why do people usually agree to cookie pop-ups?
A.They are anxious to access the website content.
B.They have read the cookie terms carefully.
C.They want to help websites collect their data.
D.They believe cookies are completely safe.
22.What can we do to avoid cookie collection when using public Wi-Fi?
A.To accept third-party cookies actively.
B.To clear cookies after visiting every website.
C.To turn on the browser's private mode.
D.To share personal information freely.
23.When should users decline cookies according to Jeremy Tillman?
A.Reading a news article on a trusted site.
B.Checking the weather forecast on a public website.
C.Logging into a medical portal to view health records.
D.Browsing a restaurant menu on a coffee shop's Wi-Fi.

Some years ago, while on my way home,I saw an elderly woman standing in the rain
with her thumb out.I slammed on the brakes and gave her a ride. She had missed the last
bus,she told me,and had been forced to hitchhike instead,a practice not unusual for her.We
shared a winding journey together, one I recall being full of laughter and stories.
Readers from older generations might fondly recall hitchhiking as an affordable,
environmentally friendly travel option. But for a younger generation, many might consider
hitchhiking as an opportunity to detach from a vapid online world.
Earlier this summer I hatched a plan to spend a month travelling without a smartphone.I
was to leave the internet behind and exclusively rely on hitchhiking as my only form of
transport.
One morning, when I was standing in Redbrook,I was given a ride by a lady called
Jenny. She was running late for work, and yet still she stopped. When I told her I was doing
this trip without a smartphone,we talked about the rise of social media. She was a paediatric
doctor, she told me,whose patients presented with symptoms such as low energy, difficulty
sleeping, depression."These young people on their phones every night until two or three in
the morning,"she said,"are fed largely harmful content by social media platforms...It's
hurting them.”
As I moved from car to car,I was forced to speak with everyone:to ask for rides, for
directions, for general information. The more I did it,the easier it became to bypass small
talk and get straight to a point of connection.
And connection matters, particularly among young people. We are in the midst of
loneliness and mental health epidemics.Much of that loneliness comes from an absence of real-
world connection that,I soon realised,it's possible for hitchhiking to provide.
24.Why did the elderly woman stand in the rain?
A.To take a walk in the rain.
B.To wait for her family.
C.To find her way back home.
D.To attempt to get a ride.
25.What is Jenny's attitude towards the rise of social media?
A.Approving
B.Critical
C.Indifferent
D.Doubtful
26.What can we learn about the author's hitchhiking trip?
A.He realized the importance of real communication.
B.It was easy for him to ask strangers for help.
C.He avoided all online communication completely.
D.It mainly helped him save money on transportation.
27.Which might be the most suitable title for the passage?
A.Thumbing a Ride Back to Connection
B.A Doctor's Warning:Phones and Sleep
C.How Social Media Affects Young People's Well-being
D.The Popularity of Hitchhiking Among Old Generations

Scientists have made a surprising discovery that colorful clownfish can shrink their bodies
to cope with intense heat waves, revealing another way marine life is adapting to climate
change. The findings, published in Science Advances, came from monitoring 134 clownfish in
Kimbe Bay during a 2023 heat wave that is still bleaching corals worldwide.Researchers were
astonished to find that 101 of these fish actually decreased in length when experiencing heat
stress, with those that slimmed down showing higher survival rates.
"We were really shocked at first when we saw that they were shrinking",said study
author Morgan Bennett-Smith with Boston University. While scientists don't yet fully
understand the mechanism behind this shrinkage, one theory suggests the fish might be
reabsorbing their own bone matter. This adaptation could help save energy during stressful
periods since smaller fish needs less food to survive.
The study uncovered additional fascinating aspects of this phenomenon.Certain clownfish
breeding pairs synchronized(同步进行)their shrinkage in a way that maintained their social
structure, with female clownfish adjusting their size to remain larger than their mates. This
preservation of the female-dominated hierarchy(等级制度)demonstrates the complexity of
their adaptive behavior. While this shrinking strategy isn't entirely new in the animal
kingdom-marine iguanas have been observed getting smaller during El Nino events-this
marks the first time scientists have documented such a coping strategy in coral reef fish.
Simon Thorrold,an ocean ecologist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution who wasn't
involved in the study, commented that"This is another tool in the toolbox that fish are going
to use to deal with a changing world."Researchers found the shrinking was temporary.
Clownfish possessed the ability to catch up and grow back when their environment got less
stressful, showing what study author Melissa Versteeg calls "incredible resilience"in the face
of environmental stress.
28.According to the study, what might be the reason for the clownfish's shrinkage?
A.To escape from predators more easily.B.To reabsorb their own bone matter.
C.To improve their swimming speed.
D.To adapt to changing climate.
29.How did the breeding pairs maintain their social structure during shrinkage?
A.Males became dominant temporarily.
B.Females remained larger than males.
C.They separated during the process.
D.They changed mating partners.
30.What does the underlined word"resilience"in the last paragraph most likely mean?
A.The ability to recover from difficulties.B.The tendency to avoid challenges.
C.The capacity to grow quickly.
D.The willingness to change behaviors.
31.What can be inferred from the passage about the clownfish's shrinkage?
A.It is a unique behavior never seen in the animal kingdom before.
B.It has some other functions beyond simple energy conservation.
C.It permanently changes the social hierarchy within breeding pairs.
D.It is a strategy that guarantees survival during heat stress.
D
Imagine saying a sentence using only your thoughts. That's exactly what scientists in
Shanghai are working to make possible.A collaborative study by the Shanghai Yansi Institute
of Brain-like Artificial Intelligence and Huashan Hospital has developed a brain-computer
interface()(BCI)system that decodes intended Chinese speech with unprecedented
accuracy. This groundbreaking advancement, now in its clinical trial phase, holds great
potential for restoring communication in patients with speech impairments()caused by
amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS),stroke, and other neurological conditions.
In the clinical trial, electrodes were implanted in the brains of 10 epilepsy()patients.
After just 100 minutes of training, where participants read aloud 54 Chinese characters, the
system's electroencephalogram ()(EEG)-based large language model learned to map
their brain activity. It did so by breaking down the Chinese characters spoken by the patients
into their phonetic components, initial consonants()and vowels, and precisely identifying
the corresponding neural signals.Trained on the 54 characters, the model can decode 1,951
common Chinese characters,achieving a 36-fold extrapolation rate,and translate a person's
intended speech into text in real time.
Unlike the English language, which has fewer than 50 phonemes,Chinese involves over
400 phoneme variations due to its combinations of initial consonants, vowels, and tones,
making it more challenging to decode brain signals related to the Chinese language. The
research team's large language model has overcome this barrier, achieving a recognition accuracy
of more than 83 percent for initial consonants in Chinese and over 84 percent for vowels.
Professor Li Meng, chief scientist at the Yansi Institute, believes this breakthrough in
BCI technology will enable the precise and efficient translation of human thoughts into text.
In addition,it paves the way for future applications such as controlling devices with just
thoughts, and even creating a painting directly from one's imagination.
Mao Ying, president of Huashan Hospital, explained that the EEG-based model
powering the trial was made possible thanks to a high-quality intracranial()EEG database
developed at Huashan Hospital. With support from the database, which is currently the
world's largest human intracranial EEG database, the team at the Yansi Institute has
independently developed a large language model capable of reading brain signals with high
precision,according to Li.
32.What is the primary goal of the brain-computer interface(BCD)system described in the text?
A.To cure epilepsy patients entirely through advanced medical technology.
B.To enable individuals to operate electronic devices using their thoughts.
C.To help people with speech disorders regain their ability to communicate.
D.To establish a comprehensive database for analyzing human brain functions.
33.How did the BCI system's language model learn to decode the patients'intended speech?
A.By studying brain activity as patients read aloud.
B.By having patients think silently for several hours.
C.By analyzing the patients'past speaking records.
D.By translating English phonemes into Chinese characters.
34.What was crucial for the development of the high-precision large language model?
A.International technical support and funding.
B.A world-leading intracranial EEG database.
C.Advanced implantable electrode technology.
D.A long-term research project on English phonemes.
35.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.A medical trial for epilepsy patients and its procedures.
B.The creation of a large EEG database in Shanghai.
C.The complexity of Chinese compared to English.
D.A new BCI that turns thoughts into text and its potential.

How to Have a Perfect Museum Visit
Museums are top tourist spots, yet a poor visit can be disappointing-even for seasoned
visitors.36 There's no need to see the Mona Lisa in Paris if you don't appreciate it,as
you'll waste time better spent on fun activities. But if you want to give museums a try, there
are some ground rules you should follow.
37 Before going,choose a museum that fits your interests.For example,art lovers
in Amsterdam might pick the Rijksmuseum for old masters or the Van Gogh Museum.Check
the museum's website to learn about highlights, special events,or closed galleries.38
Buy tickets online to skip long lines, and book a guided tour-even those with an art history
background gain from guides'lively explanations of the museum and its stories.
During your visit,an appropriate outfit comes first as you'll stand a lot and museums are
cool to protect fragile exhibits. Thus, comfortable shoes plus a warm jacket are highly
recommended. To better enjoy the artworks, pick only one collection and explore it
intensively.39 In this way, your museum experience is going to be much more interesting
than usual.
Afterward, you can relax at the museum cafe to absorb what you have seen.Besides,
visiting museum shops for some lovely souvenirs is also a nice way to help you remember your trip.
Visiting a new museum could be a bit challenging at first.40
A.If you dislike museums, don't force it.
B.Museums help us to learn from the past.
C.For art and history lovers,a great visit relies on three key steps.
D.With good preparation, however, your museum visit will be fulfilling.
E.Watch videos to get familiar with the collection and interior in advance.
F.Study details like brushstrokes or frames instead of rushing to see everything.
G.In essence,museums function as cultural guardians,storytellers,and educators.

therapy, those techniques never quite worked for her.She felt angry and confused, pleading
with God to take this burden away.
But there was one miracle she could always count on:when she sang, the stutter
disappeared completely.Music became her true voice. At sixteen, during a particularly dark
period of anxiety, she wrote her first song"I Will Trust, pouring all her unspoken pain and
faith into the lyrics.Posting it online brought hundreds of encouraging responses from
strangers-her first taste of how her music could touch others.
Now,standing before the judges, she struggled to introduce herself. The words caught
in her throat as thousands waited in silence."I...I have a speech impediment,"she finally
managed,each word a battle."But I don't stutter when I sing."She positioned her fingers on
the guitar strings, ready to share the song that had brought her here.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
However, when she tried to start, she suddenly felt very afraid.
She heard thunderous applause erupting from the crowd after the song.

one possible version:
However, when she tried to start, she suddenly felt very a fraid.Panic surged through her.But then she
looked at the audience, imagining them as friends and family, supportive and kind.Taking a shaky breath and
closing her eyes, she put her fingers on the guitar strings, guided by months of practice. The first note
emerged, tentative but clear. As the melody unfolded, the words returned to her, flowing more confidently with
each line. The song she had written about her struggles now became her source of strength. She poured every
ounce of her emotion into the performance, her voice growing steadier and more powerful.
She heard thunderous applause erupting from the crod after the song.Opening her eyes, she saw
judges and audience members on their feet, their faces filled with admiration.A judge's voice broke through the
cheers,"What a beautiful, pure voice!"The four "yes"votes confirmed what the applause had already told her.
At that moment, she understood that her greatest insecurity had become her most powerful gift. The stutter
that once silenced her had led her to this stage, where she found a voice that could move thousands.Walking
off,she knew this was just the beginning of her journey to inspire others through music.
(Text 1)
W:Do you have this book in paperback?Hardcovers are too heavy to carry in my backpack.
M:Yes,over there. The paperback is cheaper than the hardcover, and it's easier to carry.
(Text 2)
M:Do you want to go to art classes at the youth club with me?
W:Sure.I haven't done much art before,but I'd like to try.I wonder what we'll do-maybe pencil drawing?
I'd prefer that to painting.
(Text 3)
W:I'm glad we've got a canteen-I've heard many schools don't have one,so we're quite lucky.
M:Right. You can find something different to eat every day.The food's good, but you have to wait a long time.

(Text 4)
M:Excuse me,are you using your charger?Do you mind if I borrow it?I need to plug in my laptop, but I've
forgotten mine!
W:No problem, but I'll need it back in an hour.I've got to listen to a talk on my computer.
M:OK.Thanks!
(Text 5)
W:So,are there any questions about the castle?
M:Yes,I'd like to know why it was built here. It's very far away from any towns or villages.
W:Well, this is where an old king was buried.Even though it was very difficult to transport the stone and
other building materials to this location, they did an incredible job!
(Text 6)
M:I thought you were going to buy a coffee.
W:I was,but when I was in the line at the cafe,I realized that I didn't have my purse.I can't find it anywhere.
I had it at the train station for sure.
M:True. You paid for your ticket. What about the clothing shop?
W:I don't think so.
M:Maybe it fell on the floor while you were trying on that pair of jeans.
W:Yes,you're probably right.Do we have enough time to go back there before our train leaves?
M:Yes,I think so.
(Text 7)
M:Remember I told you about that online course I'm doing?Well,it's not going well.
W:Really? Why?I think online courses are cheaper than traditional classroom courses, and you can study
anytime and anywhere.
M:Don't get me wrong. The content itself is fine-I'm learning a lot.But the platform is so confusing. The
homepage lacks clear guidance.
W:How are other students managing?
M:They seem fine, but since it's my first time doing a course like this,I often feel lost.Actually,I'm thinking
of dropping out.
W:It isn't a good option since you won't get your money back. Why don't you write to the support team for help?
(Text 8)
M:Alright,Lisa.Let's break this down.
W:We've got two strong candidates for the customer service representative position-Jenna and Tom.I think
Jenna was the more enthusiastic of the two.
M:True, but Tom has more relevant experience. He's worked in customer service for five years, while Jenna
has only worked for three.
W:But Jenna's problem-solving skills seemed sharper.
M:Good point. But I'd argue Tom's communication skills were stronger. He expressed his thoughts clearly and
confidently.
W:Should we consider a second round of interviews?
M:I think that's the best option.Let's ask them both to do a role-play.That should help us see who performs
better and is less nervous under pressure.
W:Agreed!
(Text 9)
W:Mr.Wang, with the new school meal service guidelines in place,I'm here on behalf of the Parent Committee
to follow up.We are keen to know what specific changes have been made in the canteen.
M:The most visible change is greater openness. The new rules focus on food safety,so we have introduced a
smart kitchen system.
W:Smart kitchen?Does that involve new technology, like robots or software for analyzing menus?
M:No,it's a system that allows the public to view kitchen operations in real time.Parents can check what their
children are eating at school directly from their phones.
W:That must be very comforting for parents.I've also heard about the "Headmaster Responsibility system".
What does this mean for your work?
M:It means I have more direct responsibility. Now,I eat lunch with the students every day.In addition,I do
weekly inspections of the ingredients and hold monthly training sessions for the canteen staff.
W:How do the students react to eating with you?Do they feel nervous?
M:Well...

A解析:原文明确提到“we click‘yes'or‘agree'without even thinking about it because we're
eager to get to the content'”,人们急于获取网站内容,所以通常会同意Cookie弹窗,A选项符合文意。其他
选项:B选项“仔细阅读Cookie条款”与原文“without even thinking about it'”矛盾;C选项“想帮助网站收集
C解析:针对公共WiFi使用场景,原文指出“Your best bet when borrowing Wi-Fi..isto
use your browser's private mode.While in this mode,cookies aren't collected by default”,开启浏览器隐私
C解析:Jeremy Tillman的观点是“you should avoid cookies on sites where you do your
banking, access your medical information,or use other private information'”,登录医疗门户网站查看健康记
D解析:原文提到“an elderly woman standing in the rain with her thumb out'“she had missed
the last bus,she told me,and had been forced to hitchhike instead”,“hitchhike”意为搭便车,老太太竖拇指
B解析:Jenny作为儿科医生,提到“These young people on their phones every night,,are fed
largely harmful content..,It's hurting them”,明确指出社交媒体的有害内容伤害年轻人,态度是批判的,B
A解析:原文结尾提到“much of that loneliness comes from an absence of real-world connection
that,I soon realised,it's possible for hitchhiking to provide'”,作者通过搭车旅行意识到真实沟通的重要性,
其他选项:B选项“向陌生人求助很容易”与原文“The more I did it,the easier it became'”
独,“Thumbing a Ride Back to Connection”既点明了“搭车”这一行为,又突出了“连接”的主题,适合作为标
D解析:根据第一段“.,.another way marine life is adapting to climate change'”直接对应D选项。
B解析:第三段明确说明“female clownfish adjusting their size to remain larger than their
mates'”和“preservation of the female-dominated hierarchy”,直接对应B选项。
文章最后一段提到“the shrinking was
temporary""Clownfish possessed the ability to catch up and grow back when their environment got less
确指出“While this shrinking strategy isn't entirely new in the animal kingdom”,并举例说明海鬣蜥在厄尔尼
致语言障碍的患者恢复沟通能力(restoring communication in patients with speech impairments)。A项中的
“完全治愈”文中未提及;B项是未来应用场景之一,非当前主要目标;D项提到的数据库是研究工具,而非
BCI系统的直接目的。
33.细节理解题。A解析:线索在第二段:“After just 100 minutes of training,where participants read aloud54
Chinese characters, the system's.,model learned to map their brain activity.”
B解析:文章最后一段:“With support from the database, which is currently the world's
largest human intracranial EEG database, the team...has independently developed a large language model
capable of reading brain signals with high precision..”"
A项错
