Hoge was born with a strange-looking face. His mother worried about the difficulties he would face in life. But Hoge tried his best to overcome (克服) all the hard times. He smiled at himself in front of the mirror every day before he went out of his home. Although some strangers would stare at (盯着看) him or even make fun of him, he always gave them a big smile. Holidays play an important part in our life. We work hard during the year, so we feel tired and stressed at times. We need holidays to relax, even if they only last for a few days. This is especially true for women. They could get away from their husbands, children and family for even one week in the year.

Are you on social media? How old were you when you started using it?
Australia is making a new law. After it passes, people will have to be above a certain age to use social media. It is not known what the age will be, but it will most likely be between 14 and 16, said Reuters on Sept 10. The new law will start by the end of the year.
“We want them to have real experiences with real people because we know that social media is causing social problems,” said Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
He has a point. In a study on 20,000 Australian students in the 10th grade, many felt social media made them less happy. In another study, around 60 percent of parents thought social media was bad for children’s mental health (心理健康), reported The Guardian.
However, experts have doubts about the law. Lisa Given, a professor at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, wrote in The Conversation that many European countries tried this before but failed. This is because social media is an important way for teenagers to get information. It also helps them share their thoughts. So it is not right to take this away from them.
On the technical (技术的) side, the law will also be difficult to carry out, said the regulator (监管机构) for online safety in the country. For example, many apps now ask users their age. But users can simply lie and put in an earlier date. What’s more, the law may push teenagers to hide their online activities, or even use apps that are unsafe or badly managed.
1.Will the new law start by the end of the year in Australia?
2.Who is Anthony Albanese?
3.According to The Guardian, what did the parents think of the social media?
4.Do you agree with Lisa Given? What do you think of the new law in Australia?
【答案】1.Yes, it will. 2.He is the Australian Prime Minister. 3.They thought it was bad for children’s mental health. 4.Yes, I agree with Lisa Given. “Brain Rot” has become a hot topic. It was chosen as Oxford’s Word of the Year for 2024. It was first used by writer Henry David Thoreau in his book Walden in 1854. In recent years, “Brain Rot” is used to show worries about people, especially young people, who are the most influenced by social media.

How many of the above can apply to you? If the answer is three or more, maybe you are experiencing “Brain Rot”.

Nowadays, there has always been a problem between young people and their parents. Young people are often unhappy when they are with their parents, because they think their parents don’t understand them. They often say their parents are too strict with them, and their parents give them too many rules. Parents often find it difficult to get their children’s trust (信任). They seem to forget how they felt when they were young.

A good parent-child relationship is like a light tower, guiding a family through the storms and seas in life. It is built on love, understanding, and respect (尊重).
Open communication is very important. My friend Lucy gets on well with her mother. Every evening, they sit down and talk about their day. Trust is another important thing. Parents should trust their children to deal with problems in their study and life. They trusted me I can manage my time and take care of myself. This made me believe myself.
Spending more time together is also helpful. Families can go hiking, have a game, or cook together. My neighbor’s family often goes camping. Kids are natural inventors. They often create amazing things from simple ideas. Here are a few examples that might make you wonder, “Why didn’t I think of that?”
Popsicles
Popsicles were invented by 11-year-old Frank Eppersoh in 1905. He forgot a drink of juice and left it with a stir stick (搅拌棒) in it outside on a cold night. The next day it was ice. Because of this he couldn’t drink it any more, but he could eat it. It tasted good! These ice sticks became popular among kids at school in summer because they were delicious and helped them stay cool. More than a hundred years passed, and Popsicles are still one of the best summer treats!
Earmuffs
When 15-year-old Chester Greenwood was ice-skating in Farmington, Maine, in 1873, his ears were so cold that he couldn’t stand it. Although he tried covering his head in a scarf, it was not comfortable. After some thinking, Greenwood made wire into two circles and asked his grandmother to sew fur (缝制毛皮) on them. He then connected them with a steel headband (束发带) and the first earmuffs were invented!
Wristies
While some kids just complain when snow gets in their mittens (连指手套) and their hands get wet. 10-year-old Kathryn Gregory decided to do something about it. She created the first pair of Wristies as she wanted to keep her wrists (手腕) warm and dry. Wristies are long gloves with no fingers and they are worn under your mittens and coat. They can also be worn alone. They help you when you work in the cold because your hands stay warm while you use your fingers. She also started a business, with her parents’ help, which she still runs today.
All these inventions have something in common. If they can do it, you can do it, too! Now you can begin to wonder, “One day, because…”
1.Did Frank Eppersoh invent Popsicles on a cold afternoon?

The Spring Festival is just around the corner. What you’re most looking forward to may be the lucky money, right? But do you know the meaning of it? Here is a story about it.
Once, there was a demon (魔鬼) named “Sui” who came out every New Year’s Eve. While children slept, Sui would touch their heads, leaving them sick and scared. Parents were very worried.
To protect their child, a brave couple set out to find a way. They traveled far and met many people, facing lots of difficulties along the way. Sometimes they were in serious trouble and it seemed hopeless, but they never gave up.
At last, they found a method. On New Year’s Eve, they placed eight copper (铜) coins beside their sleeping child. When Sui came to touch the child, a bright light suddenly filled the room, and the demon was scared away.
From that night on, families began to follow this practice. And year after year, a tradition about lucky money appears.
Every New Year’s Eve, after a get-together dinner, all the family members stay in the living room. The elders sit comfortably on the sofa, telling stories about their past.
When the clock rings at midnight, everyone cheers and hugs each other, welcoming the New Year with happiness and hope. The young kneel down (跪下) and kowtow (磕头) to their elders, greeting with “Happy New Year”.
With big smiles, the elders take out the red envelops (信封) they have prepared. They gently hand them to each child, saying, “Happy New Year, dear. May you grow up healthily and happily.” The young receive the red envelops with both hands and express their thanks, thinking about excitedly how to deal with the money.
Years has passed by. The meaning of lucky money remains the same. When the elders give lucky money to younger family members, they hope to keep bad things away and wish for their health and happiness. This tradition shows the love between family members. Also, it passes on the value of being together of family members.
The New Year is coming. How do you plan to use the lucky money you’ll receive to bring joy?

If you can create a piece of work to let the whole world know more about China, what would it be? Here are three new pieces of works that are welcomed not only at home but abroad.
Wang Yixi and his team drew a Chinese ink painting that caught the world’s eye. Why? It’s not just a normal ink painting but the one with chemical elements (元素). How fun is that! They drew this painting for a science magazine to show China’s latest scientific achievements. “Connecting science with traditional painting is something we’ve never seen! Through Wang’s work, we are not only clear about the latest science but also it opens a window for us to get to know about Chinese art.” David from England mentioned.
A research team led by Wang Dongbo from Nanjing Agricultural University rolled out (推出) Xunzi, a large language model (LLM). Wang Dongbo said the large language model was named after Xunzi because Xunzi was a pioneer in spreading Chinese thoughts and language. When asked why Wang and his team made LLM, he pointed out, “With this LLM, ancient Chinese texts can be reached by more Chinese and people from other countries in a completely new way. We encourage more people to understand traditional Chinese culture.”
Li Junfei and his team amazed the world with the Eiffel Tower (埃菲尔铁塔) made of bread in the World Skills Competition. What makes Li’s Eiffel Tower different is that he used mortise-and-tenon joints (榫卯结构) which was often used in ancient Chinese architecture (建筑). Only having a great idea is not enough, Li and his team also tried many ways to change the bread into something as hard as biscuits so that it can support the building of the tower. “The French judges have no idea what mortise-and-tenon joints are. But after seeing my Eiffel Tower, they said they would like to know more!” Li says with a big smile.

Have you ever heard of the “three Rs” — “Reduce, reuse, recycle”? They help cut down on the number of rubbish we throw away and reuse the waste in a proper way. But how can we do that? Recently, this idea came to life in China in a special way at the Mingsha Mountain Crescent Spring scenic spot (鸣沙山月牙泉景区) in Gansu Province.
In order to protect the environment, the staff members in the scenic spot hold “Exchange (交换) Rubbish for Gifts” activity, which is widely liked by visitors. How to take part in the activity? Visitors are encouraged to get rubbish bags from the workers, pick up the rubbish around the site, and then exchange the rubbish for small gifts such as toy camels and key chains for free. Should students learn to grow food?
Some people say growing food is good for the mind and body.
What you need to know
•Food growing has been taught in schools for more than 100 years in the UK.
•At most schools, food growing is an extracurricular (课外的) activity. This means it’s usually an after-class club instead of a lesson like English or math.
•The number of school pupils in the UK growing their own food has grown since 2023, according to a recent survey.
Some people say that growing food is a skill that every child should learn while others think it’s not necessary. What do you think? Should children learn to grow food?
Yes—it teaches children so much.
Growing food is a fun way to learn about lots of things besides books. Students get to know where food actually comes from and it’s a way to learn more about soil, insects and the weather. Also, if children grow food, studies show that it helps them to be healthier. Planting, watering and moving around outside is a great way to keep fit just like P. E. Besides, watching a small seed grow into food makes students feel like they achieve something besides the stressful numbers on the test papers.
No—it’s not a necessary skill.
Not all schools have enough space to grow food. Buying seeds and gardening tools also cost money. Some schools may have trouble in finding the right place and sparing enough money. Besides, looking after a patch (菜地) properly takes time and effort—perhaps more than students can give. Schools would have to get help from staff or volunteers to manage the weeding (除草), watering and so on. Anyway, most students will buy their food from shops in the future. Growing food is a lovely hobby but it’s not a necessary life skill.
1.
2.

5.
6.
【答案】1.facts 2.increasing 3.knowledge 4.achievement/success 5.troubled 6.useless/unnecessary/meaningless

Sometimes, we might feel bad about looking different. We might feel like we look ugly or weird (怪异的) and want to be good-looking. But our differences are what makes us special.

Tina is my sister. She used to be fat and others often laughed at her, so she became very shy. She was scared to say hello to strangers. She was afraid to ask simple questions and speak loud in front of others. It seemed that she felt afraid of everything in her life. She used to believe that she would be like this all her life.
But one day, her teacher encouraged Tina to change herself. He said,“If you can give it a try, you will have a chance to make a change. But if you never try, your life is only going to get worse.” Tina was deeply touched. She thought, “Why not have a try? After all, I had nothing to lose.”

A few months later, Tina took part in a singing competition at her school. For the first time, she was able to sing aloud in front of many people. In the end, she got a big prize!

We’d better find out if you’ve got any talent then, and check with our Mum and Dad first to make sure they don’t mind their daughter taking singing classes.”

In the Ba’nan district of Chongqing, there is a town called Mudong. It is famous for its folk songs, which are usually sung by local people while working outside. In 2006, the Mudong folk songs were included in the national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) list.
Mudong folk songs have a long history. They can date back to the “Bayu Song and Dance” in ancient times. Historical records show that farmers back in 1736-1795 had the habit of singing while they were working. They sang to relax themselves and to express their feelings.
Influenced by local farming and living habits, Mudong folk songs have formed different styles like custom songs. They are not only for the farmers, but they can also be found in many different areas, including house repairs, engineering and so on. Some are sung during rituals (仪式) and ceremonies.
The main body of the Mudong folk song is called Helai or Yang Yang Ge. Helai is only popular around Mudong and the nearby area
With beautiful words and tunes (曲调), Mudong folk songs are of high artistic value. Protecting Mudong folk songs can develop the art of Chinese folk songs.

“Brain Rot” has become a hot topic. It was chosen as Oxford’s Word of the Year for 2024. It was first used by writer Henry David Thoreau in his book Walden in 1854. In recent years, “Brain Rot” is used to show worries about people, especially young people, who are the most influenced by social media.
Test yourself to see if you are experiencing “Brain Rot”: 1. You spend 2 or more hours watching short videos on your phone.
2. You talk with your friends on Wechat or QQ for a long time instead of talking to them face to face.
3. You keep checking your phone, even when you know there’s nothing new.
4. When reading a book or studying, you keep thinking of some unimportant things, such as the videos that you have watched on your phone.
5. You give up difficult problems easily. To solve them, you usually check your phone for answers.
How many of the above can apply to you? If the answer is three or more, maybe you are experiencing “Brain Rot”.
How can we avoid “Brain Rot”?
Mike Black
I think we can avoid “Brain Rot” by making some rules about using our phones. We can set limits (限制) on screen time, like using our phones for 1 hour a day. Also, we can delete some apps from our phones, like TikTok, and turn off unnecessary messages for news and social media.
Hu Binbin
I think we can avoid “Brain Rot” by going after non-digital interests. Exercising with friends, playing the guitar, going camping with family and being volunteers are all non-digital interests. For me, connecting with people face to face is a good way to avoid it
1.Was “Brain Rot” chosen as Oxford’s Word of the Year for 2024?
2.When was “Brain Rot” first used?
3.What does “Brain Rot” mean according to the passage?
4.Which student’s idea do you think may work better, Mike Black’s or Hu Binbin’s? Why? (at least 30 words).

Sun Xudong: I’m 64. I arrived here in 2021 as a retired English teacher. I’ve always hoped to improve the local education.
Xu Shuangmin: At first, I came to Karamay with a wish to help more students realize their dreams. But over the past years, I’ve come to realize that I, too, am learning and growing.

For example, young people like to do things without much thinking. It’s one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can deal with difficult things. Older people are different from them. They plan things ahead and don’t easily change their plans.
Young people often make their parents angry, but they don’t mean to cause any trouble. On one hand, the young want to keep themselves from the old people’s world. On the other hand, they want to make a new culture of their own. But if their parents don’t understand what they like, young people will feel lonely.
If you plan to do what you like, you’d better win your parents’ support and try to make them understand you. If your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility (责任感), they will certainly give you the right (权利) to do what you want to do.
1.Do parents often find it difficult to get their children’s trust?
2.How do young people show that they have grown up?
3.Why do young people make their parents angry?
4.Are you happy when you are with your parents? Why or why not?

A good parent-child relationship is like a light tower, guiding a family through the storms and seas in life. It is built on love, understanding, and respect (尊重).
Open communication is very important. My friend Lucy gets on well with her mother. Every evening, they sit down and talk about their day. Lucy shares her school experiences, and her mother tells her about work. This simple event makes them understand each other’s joys and sadness. When Lucy was having trouble with a math subject, she was able to tell her mother. Then her mother offered help in time.
Trust is another important thing. Parents should trust their children to deal with problems in their study and life. Once, I wanted to take part in a school science project that required me to work late in the school lab. I was nervous so I asked my parents for help. They trusted me I can manage my time and take care of myself. This made me believe myself.
Spending more time together is also helpful. Families can go hiking, have a game, or cook together. My neighbor’s family often goes camping. During these trips, they help each other set up tents, share stories, and play games. These experiences become their sweet memories and build a closer relationship between them.
In a word, a healthy parent-child relationship ___________________________________.

2.When do Lucy and her mother have a talk about their day?
3.What activities do the neighbor’s family usually do on a camping trip?

2.How old was Kathryn Gregory when she invented Wristies?
3.What do these three inventions have in common?
4.Finish the ending and talk about what you invented. (about 40 words)

1.Did Wang Yixi and his team draw the painting for a science magazine?
2.Why did Wang Dongho name the language model Xunzi?
3.What makes these three new works popular according to the passage?
4.If you have a chance to join one of the three teams, which one will you choose? Why? (about 30 words)

Peter’s DiaryNov. 15th
I was playing my new guitar when I saw Jeremy who also played the guitar well. He said hi and sat on the steps next to me. I just finished this new song called “Two for One” by myself. Maybe he could help me finish the lyrics. So I played it to him for some advice.
I started playing. “It’s wonderful I believe you’ll win the first prize this year”. But there was sadness on his face. I asked him why and he told me he wanted to join in the show but he was still a little young for it. I felt sorry to hear that and tried to cheer him up.

I mean my right hand works just fine, right? So I can play the right-hand parts. I’m calling him now!

As it’s quite hot in the desert during daytime, the activity begins at 8:30 PM every day.
Another reason of holding the activity is to reduce the pressure of cleaners in the scenic spot. Wang Keshou, a member of the cleaners, feels happy seeing a lot of visitors helping pick up rubbish. “This activity has largely helped in my work. To provide a good environment for daily tourists, we had to do the cleaning till three o’clock at night before. But now the condition is much better,” he says.
Yang Hui is a visitor from Tianjin. She had a great time at the scenic spot with her children. Her children were excited to pick up rubbish for gifts. She thinks the activity is educational. She says, “It teaches children that ________”
In fact, more and more people come to realize the importance of environmental protection and are willing to take action. The “three Rs” project is not far away from us. Instead, it lies in our daily activities.

Mathew Jerrett shows his love for his wife and daughters through photos. He takes photos of their everyday life. He makes the photos into a series (一系列) named “The Sleeping Ladies”.
Jerrett and his wife Melissa are parents of 10-month-old Lucia and 7-year-old Peony. After taking photos of Lucia’s birth, he continued taking pictures of his kids and wife.
“It’s natural as a parent to take photos of his kids and show people what he thinks,” Jerrett tells the newspaper. Though “The Sleeping Ladies” centers more on Lucia, the dad says he plans to share a series of his favorite photos of Peony. And of course, both series clearly feature (突出) their mother. “I’m so proud of Melissa,” Jerrett says. “I love hearing people’s kind words about Melissa when they see the photos. And we both love Lucia and Peony very much, so I hope people can see and feel that from the pictures.”
“It’s a great experience taking photos of Melissa and the girls,” he says. “I am also learning to edit (编辑) the photos. The practice calls for time. Instead of posting all the pictures on the Internet, I try to only post one or two pictures every couple of weeks.”

2.How does Mathew Jerrett show his love for his wife and daughters?
3.Why does Jerrett just post one or two pictures every couple of weeks?

On the morning of every Monday, two of my children get ready for school. They each carry a large bag with some clothes, a pair of shoes, lots of food and water. But there isn’t any book in it.
Then instead of walking them to school as I do on the other school days, I drive them to a nearby park. This is where they are going to spend the day and have lessons. Right, my boys go to a forest school once a week. It is from 8: 30 a. m. to 3: 30 p. m. A group of kids explore (探索) the forests, lakes and animals in nature together.
I love the idea of the forest school, but I worry about a few things at first. Would the teachers...? Would my kids...?
The fact is that my boys get used to the school life quickly. Most of the time, they plan their own play, climb tall trees, build fires and do many other interesting things. The teachers never tell them that their play is too high, too fast, or too dangerous. They only follow the kids and help when something goes wrong.
When I pick the boys up at the end of the afternoon, they often look lively, happy and never want to leave. The forest school teaches them to look after themselves and get along well with nature. I think that is important.
1.How do the two children get to the nearby park every Monday?
2.Do the kids enjoy themselves during the forest school?
3.What do you think the mother worries about?
4.Do you like such school life in the passage? Give your reasons.

The competition among students today is quite fierce (激烈的). In my class, every student is very hard-working. But the funny thing is that they like to make efforts secretly.
Last week, my friend looked very tired. When I went to look through his exercise book, I found that he actually finished more pages than most of us. We had no idea when he wrote it. During a lunch break, I happened to find him hiding in his quilt. I quietly got close to his bed and suddenly lifted his quilt. I found that he was secretly doing his homework, with a torch (手电) in his hand!
After knowing that, our whole class started to study secretly without telling each other. We all pretended (假装) that we hadn’t done anything but worked hard behind each other’s backs. Although our academic (学术的) performance improved, we did not have the same pleasure and satisfaction of learning together as before.
Is it really a good thing to compete in this way? Schoolwork takes up most of our time, but our lives shouldn’t just focus on one thing. We also need love, leisure (休闲) and trust in each other.
1.Are the students in the writer’s class hard-working?
2.What did the writer’s friend do in his quilt?
3.What happened after the writer’s classmates all studied secretly?
4.What’s probably the writer’s opinion? Do you agree with him? Why or why not?

My father is a cook. He makes delicious food for the workers in a factory. The workers love him very much. I also love him, but sometimes he can be “stupid”.
One morning, my father and I went shopping at the market together. When we got home, he wanted to know how much money we had spent in the shop. Suddenly, he told me something was wrong. We got 50 yuan more than we should. “That’s great! You can buy me a cartoon book,” I said. My father said nothing but asked me to go back to the shop together. I didn’t want to go back because nobody knew it. It was stupid to go back.
“It will not be stupid! Being honest is very important,” my father shouted at me angrily. I looked into his eyes and knew he was right.
When we gave back the money, the salesgirl thanked us a lot. On our way home, my father stopped me and asked, “Do you still want that cartoon book?” I looked at my stupid father and replied loudly, “Dad, you’re the greatest!”
1.Does the writer work in a factory?
2.What did they find when they returned home?
3.What did the writer want to do with the money?

It is not always easy to discover yourself. When I was young, I had a beautiful dream. But an accident changed everything.
To me, skating was more important than anything else in the world. Nothing else filled my heart with so much joy. I spent twenty hours a week developing my skills. I had no social life or interests other than skating. I often took part in skating competitions.
Unfortunately, I fell and was badly injured in a competition. The doctor told me that I couldn’t skate anymore. The pain in my back was hard to bear and even basic daily tasks became difficult.
This made me lose confidence. I lost heart and had no idea what I would become. After six months of suffering (痛苦), something had to change. Instead of sitting around and wasting my days, I began to work with local community service projects. I am good at skating. By volunteering as a skating teacher for kids, I found a new interest. Little by little, I stepped out of the shadow (阴影).
Sometimes challenges will get in our way. We can choose to stay behind or try to get past these challenges. My accident was a challenge that failed to stop me from reaching success. Today, I’m a very confident person.
1.Was skating the most important to the writer?
2.What accident happened to the writer?
3.Why did the writer teach kids to skate?
4.What will you choose if challenges get in your way? Why?

“Come on, Amy. You must TRY HARDER,” Amy told herself silently. She was in her class’s Second-Day-of-School Game with her teammates of the Blue Team, whom she only met yesterday. This was her first chance to make new friends.
Since the Blue Team left the park, they had worked out the first two clues (线索) and had been to the post office. Now they were in front of the cinema.
Henry was reading aloud the third clue: Go to our town founder’s last resting place.
“I know THIS ONE!” Amy thought, excitedly, but said nothing.
“To the cemetery (墓地),” Cindy said.
“No, wait!” Amy said. “I’ve read about it. The founder was buried near the library.” “Wow. I’ve walked by every day,” Tyler said. “Never knew that!”
“Good job! That will save valuable time,” Cindy smiled at Amy.
“We still need to hurry,” Tyler reminded, pointing to the Yellow Team coming near.
“I know a shortcut!” Henry suggested. “Follow me!” No one moved.
“No, seriously,” Henry said. “You know I’m always running late. I know every shortcut in town.” The others finally agreed.
A few sharp turns, and they were there! This time Amy read the clue aloud: Now go to the place where the football is running around!
“The football stadium (场馆)!” They called out together and started to run.
Now they’d got the final clue: Look where you’ve been, see where you are. Use your map wisely and you’ll be a star!
Looking closely at the map, everyone thought hard.
“Aha! A star!” Amy suddenly broke the silence. She quickly took out a pencil.
As they watched her drawing lines on the map, everyone understood.

One night I was sitting in my kitchen half-listening as my 15-year-old son Tommy fought against his younger brother Kevin. Later, Kevin went upstairs with a sad look on his face. Clearly, he lost the fight. However, I didn’t think it was a big problem.
About 20 minutes later, as I was walking upstairs, I heard Kevin crying in his room.
I knocked on the door and asked, “Kevin, do you want to talk?”
There was no answer. I tried again. Still, nothing happened.
So, I took a piece of paper and wrote, “If you don’t want to talk, we can write a note.” and slipped (使滑动) it under the door.
I sat on the floor outside his door and waited for an hour. Finally, a note slipped out. As I read it, I couldn’t help crying. It said, “I lost the fight again. I can never beat Tommy. I failed my math exam. I think I can never learn math well. Besides, Tommy thinks that I am too weak and doesn’t want to play basketball with me. You and Dad are never around even to notice me.”
He was right about my part. Feeling sorry for him, I wrote back, “________.”
I could hear him crying softly. Half an hour later, a note with “Thanks” came out. I wrote back, “For what?”
He returned, “Loving me.”
Since then, I have tried my best to care about my family members. When one of us notices that someone is unhappy, we’ll smile and say, “Write a note.”

With the increasing development of technology, it has a big influence on our lives. People from all over the world can talk to each other almost at once on mobile phones and the Internet now. People can easily solve their problems with the help of computers and the world wide web. With this technology, it seems that the world is more connected now than ever before. Even so, there have been worries about technology making people feel lonely and disconnected from others around them.
So does this mean that technology makes us lonely?
In my opinion, it is hard to say Yes or No. It’s true that humans need communication with each other. If we depend on technology too much to communicate, this can be bad for our mental health. For me, technology is a tool. And just like any other kind of tool—like scissors, a pencil or a ruler. For example, it depends on how we use it: in a right way or in a right place. Take social media as an example. If you only use it to compare yourself with others, you might feel sad and lonely. But if you use it as a tool to connect with friends and family or to start a new community to talk about your hobbies and interests, the loneliness will turn into love and friendship.
When you feel lonely after staring at your computer screen all day, maybe you can use that technology to reach out to a reliable friend and invite him or her for lunch or a coffee.
1.Does technology influence our lives?
2.What does badly in our mental health from the passage?
3.After you stare at your computers for a long time, what might you do depend on the technology?
4.How do you like the development of technology? Why?

As a child, I spent each Thanksgiving with my large family at my grandparents’ house in Maryland, US. It’s a wooden cabin (小屋) on the side of a hill, deep in the forest.
When my parents and I arrived this Thanksgiving, my aunts, uncles and cousins were already in the cabin. They all came back from all over the country to spend the holiday with the families. Aunt Sue touched my face and told me how big I’d gotten. Uncle Peter gave me a big hug and shouted, “Hello, Calvin!”
The next day, by the time I woke up, Grandma and Mom had already begun cooking. Throughout the day we all helped out. The cabin was small, so we had to make room for everyone to sit at the long table together.
Dinner was finally served at about 4 p.m. Before we ate, Grandma asked each person to say at least one thing that he or she was thankful for. I said, “I’m thankful for my parents, my grandma and the turkey!” I was too hungry to think of anything better. Once everyone was finished speaking, we dug in. It was all delicious food.
After dinner, we took a long walk through the woods around the cabin. Under the late-autumn stars, we made a fire in the field and told stories. I looked back up the hill at the cabin in the moonlight, and one word appeared in my mind: “Thanks”.

2.Where did his family come back from on Thanksgiving?

We took her to two women’s shelters (收容所), but the staff at each shelter said they couldn’t take any more people. Reading Lu Xun’s works has become common memories of Chinese students. From a young age, we have studied his works such as My Old Home, The True Sory of AhQ.
Last year marked the 142nd anniversary of the great writer’s birth. Born on Sept 25th, 1881, his real name is Zhou Shuren. He once dreamed of being a doctor. In 1904, he went to study in a Japanese college as his father died of illness. However, in the early 20th century, Lu Xun found that there were many problems in Chinese society. The minds of Chinese were numb (麻木的) and most of them were just followers without thinking. So in 1906, he gave up medical study and started writing. He hoped his words could help people. So he used the everyday language that people spoke, which helped people understand his novels easily and become more active. This made Lu Xun a leading Chinese writer.
How do young people think of Lu Xun?“He changed his dream to save the country. This encouraged me a lot,” said Zhao Hihan, 13, from Beijing. “When choosing between several things, students should think about what they are for.”
“Though Lu Xun’s works were written in his time, they are still a part of pop culture. His words are often quoted (引用) and used,” said Wang Mian. “Lu Xun is also the most talked-about writer on the video website.”
1.Are Lu Xun’s works still part of pop culture according to Wang Mian?
2.What problem did Lu Xun find in the early 20th century in China?
3.How did Lu Xun change people’s attitude (态度) to life at that time in his own way?
4.Are you one of the students who likes Lu Xun’s works? Why or why not?
