For example, let’s look at the word “ball”. You could be on the “ball” which means you know what is happening. You could go to a “ball” which means a dance.
Let’s try another word. Take the word “can”. You have a “can” of soup which means the soup is in a round-shaped holder. You can do the “can-can” which is a dance from 1920s. And you might get “canned” if you do a poor job at work. It means you might lose your job.

There are hundreds of words that are multi-meaning words. The word “set” has more meanings than any other word in the English language. When you have time, why don’t you try to think of all the ways the word “set” is used?
If you look at the title of this book Can a Fly, Fly? … you know that the answer is “Yes” because you have seen an insect named “fly” go up in the air and move around through the air…which is what “fly” means. Can a Fly, Fly? Of course, it can!

A kite is one of the oldest toys, and it’s very simple to make. No one knows who flew the first kite. It was probably someone in China or perhaps Indonesia (印度尼西亚). Indonesian fishermen hung fishhooks on kites and sent them out to sea to catch fish. Starting 2,000 years ago, Chinese farmers flew kites to welcome the New Year and bring good luck to Earth.
In China, people also used kites during wartime. One Chinese story tells how soldiers put noise markers on kites and flew them at night over the enemy’s (敌人的) camp. The enemies were frightened by the noise and ran away.
About 1,300 years ago, Chinese travelers took kites to Japan. Soon, kites filled the skies there. Kites reached Thailand about 700 years ago. During floods, Thai farmers flew kites over their fields (田地). They hoped the kites would drive away the clouds and stop the rain. Over time, kites flew their way out of Asia. Today, kites are a passion all over the world. Kite fans meet at festivals in many parts of the world and have great fun.
Over the years, kites have also helped people understand the natural world. In 1749, for example, a thermometer was tied to kites to measure temperatures. In 1906, cameras hanging from kites took pictures of San Francisco, California after an earthquake. The photos help people plan what to do. Kites also helped inventors find out how to make airplanes. The Wright brothers studied how kites flew, which helped them make the first successful airplane.
Since the ancient Chinese first set their kites into the air, people have loved flying kites. Kites give us ways to celebrate, relax and explore. So go and fly a kite! Enjoy the feeling of wonder that kite flyers have felt for centuries.

Dr. Demis Hassabis is a top AI scientist and the CEO of Google DeepMind. He spoke at an old Roman theater in Athens, Greece. He shared an important thought: “learning how to learn” will be the most useful skill for young people in the future.
Dr. Hassabis won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He explained that artificial intelligence (AI) is growing very fast. It is changing our lives so quickly that we can hardly guess what the world will be like in ten years. But one thing is sure: big changes are coming.
To get used to these changes, students need to develop meta-skills (元技能). These are skills that help them learn how to learn. For example, they should know how to study new subjects well and quickly, use their time in a smart way, and think carefully. With these abilities, they can keep learning all their lives.
AI can help people work faster and solve hard problems. But it is also important not to depend too much on AI. Students should learn to think by themselves and make their own learning abilities better.
Many schools around the world are now getting students ready for a future led by AI. They are giving AI-related courses and encouraging students to look into new technologies. The goal is to help young people become creative and confident learners.
In short, as AI keeps developing, the ability to learn how to learn will become more and more necessary. By learning this skill well, students can stay interested in new things, accept changes, and succeed in the future.

A. Winning a science competition.
B. Making a simple weekly study plan to arrange study time.
C. Taking notes clearly to help review what you’ve learned.
33. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A. AI is not useful for solving hard problems.
B. Students should depend on AI to finish tasks.
C. Independent thinking is important for students.
34. Why do many schools offer AI-related courses?
A. To help students get ready for a future led by AI.
B. To make students win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
C. To train students to be top AI scientists.
35. What can we know about Dr. Demis Hassabis from this passage?

Languages have been coming and going for thousands of years. There are only about 5,600 languages all over the world now. And half of them may disappear in the near future. One organization called Wikitongues is trying its best to save these languages.
When a language disappears, many other things can go away as well, like culture and knowledge. Because of this, Wikitongues believes the process of bringing the languages back must be done by speakers themselves.
Started in 2016, Wikitongues is an open Internet collection of world languages. There are more than 400 languages and dialects (方言) available on Wikitongues’ YouTube channel (频道), like English and Chinese, are spoken by millions of people. Others are uncommon. Bora is spoken by only a few thousand people.
More than 1,500 people from 70 different countries have added videos to the channel. Udell, who works for Wikitongues, says there are many examples of languages that disappeared but later returned to use.
“Hebrew died out in the 4th century BC and was revived (复兴) in the 1800s. Now once again, it’s the mother language of millions of people. So, too. We hope so.”
Theron, one of Wikitongues volunteers, lives in Namibia. His mother language is Subiya, which is spoken by about 30, 000 people. “I think my mother language is the first language I learned when I was born,” Theron said.
Theron hopes his work can help keep Subiya from disappearing. And he’s not just sharing his language with others through videos. He is also working hard to create a Subiya dictionary and its teaching materials that can be used in schools.

You hear or read a story a hundred times, but when you read it again, you’ll still learn something new, isn’t it amazing? That happened to me recently when I reread the story below.
In the Middle Ages, a man travelled to a city where many people were building a new church (教堂) in the square. He walked up to a strong man cutting rock and asked him what he was doing. “I am a stone mason,” the man said. “I spend all my days cutting and forming stones.”
The traveller then walked over to a man cutting a long piece of wood high above him and called out the same question to him. “I am a carpenter,” the man called back. “I spend my days cutting and hammering (锤打) wood.”
Finally, the man walked into the church. He saw an old woman sweeping the floor while she was singing happily to herself. He asked her what she was doing. “I am a cleaner. I am building a glorious church,” she said. “Everyone will like it when they see it for the first time; it’s so fascinating.”
I always read that story with a smile on my face. I saw it as a lesson in taking pride in your work and seeing the value in your job. But this time my mind cleared and I saw there was an even deeper meaning in this story. It wasn’t only about how you feel about your job but also about how you live your life. Each one of our lives here is a church. Each act we decide is a stone we lay. Each act of kindness we do is the wood we cut. Each moment of love we create builds it up higher and more beautiful.

While learning English, we can find some English words that have more than one meaning. These are called multi-meaning words. Multi-meaning words have the same pronunciation with different meanings.
How about “fly”? You can “fly” an airplane or you can hit a “fly” that is on your food in your house. Or, you can “fly by the seat of your pants” which means you don’t make a plan before taking action. And, you know that the “fly” of a zipper (拉链) is the top part of the zipper.
21. What does “multi-” mean in “multi-meaning”?
A. Only one. B. More than one. C. Fewer than one.
22. What might Jack do if he is often late for work and fails to finish his work?
A. Do the can-can. B. Get canned. C. Be on the ball。
23. What does the first “fly” in the book Can a Fly, Fly? refer to?

24. How many examples of multi-meaning are given in the passage?
A. Four. B. Five. C. Six.
25. Why does the writer write the passage?
A. To share an experience in learning English.
B. To give some examples about learning English.
C. To make an introduction about multi-meaning words.

31. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce Dr. Demis Hassabis’ work experience.
B. To explain why “learning how to learn” is important for young people.
C. To list all the AI-related courses in schools.
32. Which of the following is a meta-skill according to the passage?
A. Winning a science competition.
B Making a simple weekly study plan to arrange study time.

You hear or read a story a hundred times but when you read it again, you’ll still learn something new, isn’t it amazing?
