It’s impossible for my children to read this, which is lucky for me, because it would give them support for the argument “Can we get a dog or a cat?” Because the research suggests that having one is good for children.
A study published shows that children who had a dog in their first year of life were 13% less likely to develop asthma (哮喘) by the time they were six than those from dog-free families. It is believed that children are more likely to develop allergies (过敏) if they grow up in super-clean environments. This study shows other reasons that increase the risk of asthma, but can still show only an association (联系).
It is reported that 46% of families in the UK have pets, with dogs and then cats the most common animals. The evidence which shows the advantages of having cats is not always the same, but some research still shows that pets make children healthier. A study of 397 Finnish babies in 2012 found that during their first year of life, those whose parents had dogs or cats had fewer colds than those from homes without pets. Dogs offered more protection than cats. The researchers think this is because they brought in more dirt from outside to cause the babies’ immune systems (免疫系统) to work well.
The research also shows that having a pet may make children feel more popular and be more understanding. Older studies found that pets make family members spend more time together and have more “entertainment” they offered as well.
Pets can also help children to learn about responsibility, brush the fur, clean the place they sleep, feed them, take more exercise (if you get a dog) and deal with loss—who can forget when their family pet got a car accident?
In a word, keeping pets is really good for improving children’s health and their qualities. However, I still won’t allow my children to keep a pet at home. After all, both dogs and cats poop (排泄) at home, and they can carry worms or other viruses. Also, it seems that few children look after the animals, they repeatedly asked their parents for help.
5. According to some research, having a pet makes children healthier because ________.
A. they aren’t likely to develop asthma B. they live in a super-clean environment
C. pets can protect them from danger D. dirt makes them guard against the disease better
6. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. There is no good reason for having pets. B. Having pets also has its disadvantages.
C. Children share the care of pets with parents. D. Pets may bring happiness to children.
7. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Why can pets make parents healthier? B. Will having a pet make your parents sick?
C. Does a pet bring more happiness? D. Is keeping a pet really good for your children?
8. What best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
C
①Have you ever imagined being able to communicate with your pets at home and let them understand everything you say? It sounds too good to be true but scientists have started using artificial intelligence (AI) to help communicate with animals.
②AI allows humans to use technology to watch and understand the sounds and signals (信号) animals use so we can try to speak back to them. By decoding (解码) recordings of animals talking to one another, humans can communicate in their language, and it could be better than to teach them to use human sign language.
③Scientist Karen Bakker said that AI is already helping humans communicate with bats (蝙蝠) and bees. This could change what we know about nature and our non-human relationships.
④Karen explained how scientist Yossi Yovel had used recordings and AI to understand bats, “Bats argue over food; they communicate differently between genders (性别); they have their names, or signature calls,” she said. “But unlike human mothers raise the pitch (提高音调) of their voices when talking to babies, bat mothers lower the pitch.”
⑤ “When bees speak to one another, they use body movements, as well as the sounds, to communicate,” Karen said. She said scientists now know how bees say things such as “hush (be quiet)” and “stop”. Scientist Tim Landgraf even created a robot bee that entered a hive (蜂巢) and was able to communicate to other bees when it wanted them to stop doing something or fly.
⑥So, are you looking forward to communicating with animals one day?
9. The writer starts the passage by _________.
A. telling a story B. asking a question C. listing facts D. giving examples

C. By learning and understanding animals’ language.
D. By changing the relationship between humans and animals.
11. What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A. People may communicate with dogs and cats one day.
B. Yossi Yovel had used recordings and AI to understand bats.
C. The bees communicate with each other by raising the pitch.
D. Teaching animals to use human sign language is the best way to communicate with them.

In our lives, pets have become much more than just animals that share our homes. They are cherished companions, offering unconditional love and support that enriches our daily existence in profound ways.
Dogs, often hailed as “man’s best friend,” are a prime example of the deep-seated bond between pets and humans. From the moment a puppy enters a family, it begins to form an emotional connection. They greet us with wagging tails and excited barks after a long day at work, instantly lifting our spirits. Dogs are not only great for companionship but also serve practical purposes. Service dogs, for instance, assist people with disabilities, whether it’s guiding the blind, alerting those with hearing impairments to sounds, or providing support to individuals with mobility issues. Their loyalty makes them invaluable partners in these roles.
Cats, with their independent yet affectionate nature, also hold a special place in many households. A purring cat curled up on our laps can bring a sense of calm and relaxation. They may seem aloof at times, but their gentle nuzzles and soft meows when they seek attention show their love for their human companions. Cats can also be great for reducing stress. Studies have shown that interacting with a cat can lower blood pressure and ease anxiety.
Small pets like rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters, though less commonly thought of in terms of close relationships, also offer unique forms of companionship. They may be more timid, but with patience and gentle handling, they can become comfortable around their owners. Watching these small creatures go about their daily activities, such as nibbling on food or playing in their cages, can be a source of simple joy.
The relationship between pets and humans is a two-way street. We provide them with food, shelter, and medical care, while they offer us emotional support, a reason to be more active (especially in the case of dogs that need walks), and a sense of purpose. In fact, for many people living alone, a pet can be their main source of social interaction.
However, this special bond also comes with responsibilities. We need to ensure that our pets are healthy, happy, and well-cared for. This includes regular vet check-ups, proper nutrition, and sufficient exercise (where applicable). In return, the love and loyalty our pets give us make all the efforts worthwhile.
In conclusion, the relationship between pets and humans is a beautiful and essential part of our lives. It teaches us about love, responsibility, and the simple pleasures that come from sharing our world with another living being. Whether it’s a dog, a cat, or a small furry friend, these pets become an integral part of our families, and their presence makes our lives more fulfilling.
13. Why are dogs often called “man’s best friend”?
A. Because they are the most popular pets.
B. Because they can perform various tasks for humans.
C. Because they offer unconditional love and practical assistance.
D. Because they are easy to train.
14. How do cats help reduce stress?
A. By always being affectionate and clingy.
B. By purring and seeking attention in a gentle way.
C. By playing energetic games with their owners.
D. By being independent and not demanding much attention.
15. What is the significance (重要性) of small pets like rabbits and guinea pigs in human-pet relationships?
A. They are mainly for show and decoration.
B. They offer unique forms of companionship and simple joy.
C. They are more intelligent than other pets.
D. They require very little care compared to dogs and cats.
16. What does the author mean by “the relationship between pets and humans is a two-way street”?
A. Pets and humans should walk on the street together.
B. Both pets and humans should be trained.
C. Humans should only focus on taking care of pets.
D. Pets give and get care and love from humans.

The Great Pet Competition
One sunny afternoon, the animals in the village decided to hold a competition to see who would make the “best pet”. Dogs, birds, cats and even a little fish joined it.
First, the dog barked, “I am the best pet! I can guard the house, play fetch, and even help the police. I am faithful and always happy to see my owner!”
Then, the cat purred, “No, I am the best! I am clean, quiet, and very independent. I don’t need walks, and I can catch mice. Plus, people love my soft fur!”
The bird chirped, “But I can sing beautiful songs! I bring music and joy to the house. I don’t take up much space, and children love to watch me.”
Finally, the fish bubbled, “I may not bark or purr, but I am peaceful and relaxing to watch. My tank is like a tiny piece of the ocean inside the home!”
The competition lasted for three hours. Finally, the wise old owl, who was judging, said, “Each pet is special in its own way. The best pet depends on what a person needs and loves.”
Moral of the story: Different pets have different strengths. The best pet is the one that fits best with its owner’s life!

【范文赏析】
Dear Andy,
With the improvement of our living standard, more and more people like to raise dogs as their pets in the living areas or settlements. Recently, according to this, our class have held a discussion on whether people should raise these dogs. Different opinions are as follows:
Those who are for it think that people should have the right to raise dogs as their pets. First, dogs can not only help their masters watch out houses ,but also bring them happiness and pleasure. Second, by keeping dogs, the only child and the old will not feel lonely. Third, we can learn to care for the lives.
However, quite a large number of the people think dogs should not be raised as pets in the living areas. For one reason, they make so much noise, especially at night, which has a bad effect on people’s rest. Second, they are dirty and they often make the environment dirty. At last, sometimes, some dogs may even bite people. People often feel frightened whenever they meet them.
In my opinion, I am strongly against raising dogs in the public places such as living areas and settlements. For the sake of people's safety and living environment , raising dogs as pets should be forbidden
