On Sunday, Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia shocked the running world by breaking the women’s world record for the marathon by over two minutes. Assefa finished the Berlin Marathon in just 2 hours, 11 minutes, and 53 seconds.
But Assefa’s record was far beyond what most people expected. After all, it was only her third time running a marathon.
“I wanted to break the marathon world record,” she said, “But I couldn’t imagine that it would result in a time under 2:12.”
When Assefa was younger, she started by running short races, called sprints. Then she became a middle-distance runner, running the 800 meters (half mile) race. Her best time in the 800 meters was 1 minute and 59 seconds.
Last March, she ran her first marathon. Then last September, she entered the Berlin Marathon. She won, and set a new women’s record for the course, finishing in 2:15:37.
This year, she ran almost four minutes faster than she did last year. In both races, Assefa ran faster in the second half of the race than she did in the first half.
Her time of 2:11:53 was over two minutes faster than the old women’s record (2:14:04), which was set in Chicago in 2019 by Brigid Kosgei of Kenya.
When she finished the race, Assefa kneeled down and kissed the pavement before raising her arms in victory.
Though Assefa made it look easy, she said winning the race “…was the result of hard work.” Assefa was coached by Gemedu Dedefo, who has helped train many Ethiopian star runners.

A.2:11:53. B.2:14:04. C.2:15:37. D.1:59:00.

As a head football coach, I built a team at Long Beach City College and had success in Division I, the highest level of college sports. Playing in the Women’s College World Series (WCWS) was my final goal.
It took five tough years before we made it to the WCWS in 2000, then took down UCLA, our competitor, to win the title. My dream had come true sooner than I’d expected. But one championship wasn’t enough.
That year and then several more went by but we didn’t win another national championship. I worried that the WCWS might never happen again for our team. I drove our players — and myself — harder and harder. After a frustrating practice during the 2010 season, I went home and threw myself on my bed. I broke down and thought I wasn’t succeeding as a coach because I wasn’t winning.
Then I thought about how my mom had “coached” me. By being present, giving me her full attention even when she was worried about feeding us when her salary (薪水) ran out. That’s what I could do for our players. Show them that I valued them beyond what they did on the field.
I started taking them out to eat, to get to know them one-on-one. I promised them that I would be there for them if they were ever facing a personal problem. In turn, our athletes shared challenges they met with me.
All of us became closer. We grew as a team. In the years since I changed the way I coached, I’ve had a lot of breakfasts with the athletes. Our team has won six more WCWS titles — seven in all. I’m proud to see my players following their dreams. Also, I have learned the joy of coaching players.
2.What does the underlined phrase “took down” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Recognize. B.Face. C.Beat. D.Recommend.
3.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.The training of the players.
B.The devotion of the players.
C.The coaching experience of the author.
D.The struggle of the author during the dark time.
4.What change did I make in my later coaching years?
A.I stopped forcing my athletes to train.
B.I made a lot of promises to my athletes.
C.I tried to build close relationship with my athletes.
D.I focused on solving my athletes’ all kinds of problems.
5.What does the author’s story tell us?
A.Team spirit is unnecessary.
B.Winning is everything for a coach.
C.The result should be highly thought of.
D.Winning is meaningful when it isn’t everything.
【答案】1.C 2.D 3.C 4.D

2.主旨大意题。根据第三段“That year and then several more went by but we didn’t win another national championship. I worried that the WCWS might never happen again for our team. I drove our players — and myself — harder and harder. After a frustrating practice during the 2010 season, I went home and threw myself on my bed. I broke down and thought I wasn’t succeeding as a coach because I wasn’t winning. (那一年,接下来的几年过去了,但我们没有再赢得全国冠军。我担心我们的球队可能再也不会参加女子大学世界大赛了。我把我们的球员——还有我自己——逼得越来越紧。在2010赛季一次令人沮丧的训练后,我回到家,扑倒在床上。我崩溃了,觉得自己作为教练没有成功,因为我没有赢)”可知,本段主要讲述了作者在低谷时期的挣扎。故选D。
3.细节理解题。根据第五段“I started taking them out to eat, to get to know them one-on-one. I promised them that I would be there for them if they were ever facing a personal problem. 4.推理判断题。根据最后一段“All of us became closer. We grew as a team. In the years since I changed the way I coached, I’ve had a lot of breakfasts with the athletes. Our team has won six more WCWS titles — seven in all. I’m proud to see my players following their dreams. Also, I have learned the joy of coaching players. (我们所有人都变得更亲密了。我们作为一个团队成长了。自从我改变执教方式以来,我和运动员们一起吃了很多早餐。我们的球队又赢得了6个女子大学世界大赛冠军——总共7个。看到我的球员们追逐梦想,我感到很自豪。同时,我也体会到了执教球员的乐趣)”可知,作者的故事告诉我们,当胜利不是一切的时候,它才是有意义的。故选D。

A 19-year-old swimmer known as “the basketball girl” made a splash during the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games. Qian Hongyan lost her legs at the age of four, but that didn’t stop her from chasing her dream.
When she was 4 years old, Qian was hit by a truck as she was crossing the road in her hometown in Luliang County, in southwestern China’s Yunnan province. Surgeons were unable to save Qian’s legs, and a friend also involved in the accident died. “I just remember that when I woke up, my legs felt very cold,” Qian told China Daily in 2008.
To improve Qian’s mobility, her grandfather cut a wide hole in a basketball, placed Qian inside, and gave her wooden paddles to “walk” with. It was the only solution the family could afford, and it worked. When a news report and accompanying photo were republished in newspapers nationwide, Qian became known as “the basketball girl.”
Qian’s story raised awareness about the plight (困境) of disabled people in China’s vast countryside. Today Qian said she prefers the basketball to a wheelchair, though she has been fitted with a set of prosthetic (假肢) legs. It took more than an hour for Qian to go to her elementary school, just a seven-minute walk away for someone with full mobility. After her first five years of trekking, she’d worn through eight basketballs, according to newspaper Life News.
After receiving a prosthesis in Beijing with the help of donations, she joined a swimming club for disabled teens in Kunming, Yunnan’s capital. Qian swims over 10, 000 meters in the pool every training day. In return for her hard work, she’s won gold medals in provincial and national competitions. And in the summer of 2016, “the basketball girl” made it all the way to Rio.
“Before I learned to swim, I was ‘the basketball girl.’ I walked out of my home and saw the world from a low angle. Then, after I was fitted with a pair of prosthetics, I saw the world at my regular height,” Qian told Xinhua in Rio. “Since I started swimming and taking part in the Paralympics, I now feel like I have a much wider worldview.”

At 5:45 am, I stood in line with four armed Akashinga women. “ Remain silent and please do what we say at all times,” said Nyaradzo.
The Akashinga women were in charge of monitoring Zimbabwe’s Phundundu Wildlife Area, a 300 sq km tract (地带) of former hunting land. Faced with poachers (盗猎者) and wild animals, these women were making a huge difference to African elephants as well as other wildlife species.
I took a deep breath as we moved into the darkness. After a time, we stopped suddenly and knelt down. My mind started racing…What had they found? To my delight, it was a wild elephant with her baby, about 50 meters away from us. “ It can be very dangerous,” one whispered to me. “ We must move away slowly.” You could see the excitement on their faces. No words were needed.
That night, we set up camp in a remote area. Then we checked the surrounding area to recognize any threats. When we returned, we ate something and put out the fire so our location could not be found by the poachers. The plan was to sleep for a couple of hours. As I lay on the hard ground, I realized I was completely out of my comfort zone.
“ Wake up, Holly, we are going out to work.” I moved slowly into the darkness. We sat on the ground, waiting and looking out for poachers’ torch (火把) lights. After a few minutes, one whispered, “ That noise is from one of the most dangerous snakes and it is not far away.” We made our way back to the camp.
At 6 am, I awoke feeling relieved to have survived. This was just one day in the life there. These brave women were doing such valuable but often challenging work and making a real difference.

4.Why did they put out the fire at night?
A.To have a good sleep.
B.To drive the poachers away in time.

The 64-year-old playwright is not well-known outside his home country of Norway. But the author is internationally celebrated in literary circles and has been called “the most produced living playwright”.
Fosse grew up on a rural farm near Strandebarm, Norway, where his grandparents lived in one house while he, his parents, and two sisters lived in another. Since then, his work has been performed in more than 60 countries around the world, according to his translator, Ann Henning Jocelyn. 2.(23-24高一上·云南昆明官渡区·期末)On Monday, people across Kenya took part in the country’s first national tree-planting holiday. The holiday was created by Kenya’s president, William Ruto, to encourage people to plant trees as part of a plan to fight the climate crisis (危机).
Kenya is famous for its beautiful forests and wildlife. But large areas of Kenya’s forests have been cut down, either for the wood, to clear the land for farming, or both. And those trees would normally help take in carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that’s a major cause of the climate crisis.
In early November, to help get Kenya’s great tree-planting effort started, the government declared November 13 a holiday — National Tree Growing Day. To prepare for the day, the government got 150 million seedlings ready for planting.
The government created a special app to help organize the tree planting. The app is called JazaMiti, which means “fill with trees” in Swahili. The app helps people collect trees, find places to plant, and record their efforts. The app will also help the government track how many trees have been planted in different areas around the country.
People all over Kenya turned out in large numbers to take part in the holiday. Elizabeth Wathuti, who works to protect the environment, was very happy about the support that Kenyans showed for tree planting. But she pointed out that it would be very important to continue to take care of the trees as they grow. “Tree planting is just the beginning,” she said.

Natalie Doan, 14, has always felt lucky to live in Rockaway, New York. Living just a few blocks from the beach, Natalie can see the ocean and hear the waves from her house. “It’s the ocean that makes Rockaway so special,” she says.
On October 29, 2012, that ocean turned fierce. That night, Hurricane Sandy attacked the East Coast, and Rockaway was hit especially hard. Fortunately, Natalie’s family escaped to Brooklyn shortly before the city’s bridges closed.
When they returned to Rockaway the next day, they found their neighborhood in ruins. Many of Natalie’s friends had lost their homes and were living far away. All around her, people were suffering, especially the elderly. Natalie’s school was so damaged that she had to temporarily attend a school in Brooklyn.
In the following few days, the men and women helping Rockaway recover inspired Natalie. Volunteers came with carloads of donated clothing and toys. Neighbors devoted their spare time to helping others rebuild. Teenagers climbed dozens of flights of stairs to deliver water and food to elderly people trapped in powerless high-rise buildings.
“My mom tells me that I can’t control what happens to me,” Natalie says. “but I can always choose how I deal with it.”
Natalie’s choice was to help. She created a website page, matching survivors in need with donors who wanted to help. Natalie posted information about a boy named Patrick, who lost his baseball card collection when his house burned down. Within days, Patrick’s collection was replaced.
In the coming months, her website page helped lots of kids: Christopher, who received a new basketball; Charlie, who got a new keyboard. Natalie also worked with other organizations to bring much-needed supplies to Rockaway. Her efforts made her a famous person. Last April, she was invited to the White House and honored as a Hurricane Sandy Champion of Change.
Today, the scars (创痕) of destruction are still seen in Rockaway, but hope is in the air. The streets are clear, and many homes have been rebuilt. “I can’t imagine living anywhere but Rockaway,” Natalie declares. “My neighborhood will be back, even stronger than before.”

In San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, Amanda Barrows placed a wooden nightstand (床头柜). It went with a sign reading, “Take a poem, leave a poem.”
So far, more than 100 poems have come in. “It’s completely unexpected,” said Barrows. “I’m impressed by the support.”
A park manager by day and a poet by night, Barrows joined the Poetry for the People class at City College of San Francisco. Students were asked to “bring poetry into the community” as their final project.
In the beginning, Barrows struggled to land on an idea. At last, though, it struck her that she could bring together her two worlds - parks and poetry. A neighbor offered a weathered nightstand, which Barrows thought would be perfect for her project. She could fill the nightstand with fresh paper and pens and add a box at the bottom for poems.
The idea reminded her of Little Free Libraries, which was known for the bookstands placed across the city. “I was inspired by the Little Free Libraries, where you ‘take a book, leave a book’. And I thought, ‘Maybe I could do this with poetry,’” said Barrows. Since she only had one nightstand to work with, Barrows decided that she would leave it in a park for four days before moving it to a new location. Barrows’s goal is to bring the poetry nightstand to all 220 city parks in San Francisco.
Since the Poetry Nightstand Project (PNP) started, people have donated many poems. Barrows has shared them on social media. “It is a community project,” Barrows said. “It belongs to all.”
Her poetry class teacher, Muller, commented, “People need poetry”, which might be the reason for the success of Barrows’s project.
2.Why did Barrows start her project?
A.To share her own poems. B.To apply for a poetry class.
C.To encourage young poets. D.To complete a required task.
3.How did PNP differ from Little Free Libraries?
A.It wasn’t well-received by the poets. B.It wasn’t fixed on a specific site.
C.It covered different types of writings. D.It was only open to local people.
4.What did Muller think contributed to the success of PNP?
A.The donation of social media. B.The public’s demand for poetry.
C.The help from a kind neighbor. D.The support from the city parks.
5.Which word can best describe Barrows?
A.Brave. B.Talented. C.Creative. D.Generous.

1.细节理解题。根据文章第三段“A park manager by day and a poet by night, Barrows joined the Poetry for the People class at City College of San Francisco. Students were asked to ‘bring poetry into the community’ as their final project. (白天是公园管理员,晚上是诗人,巴罗斯加入了旧金山城市学院的“诗歌为人民”课程。学生们被要求将“诗歌带入社区”作为他们的期末作业。)”可知,巴罗斯是为了完成一项规定的任务而发起了这个项目。故选D。
2.细节理解题。根据文章第五段“Since she only had one nightstand to work with, Barrows decided that she would leave it in a park for four days before moving it to a new location. Barrows’s goal is to bring the poetry nightstand to all 220 city parks in San Francisco. (由于她只有一个床头柜可以使用,巴罗斯决定先把它放在一个公园里四天,然后再搬到一个新的地点。巴罗斯的目标是将诗歌床头柜带到旧金山所有的220个城市公园。)”可知,PNP(诗歌床头柜项目)与小型免费图书馆的不同之处在于它并不是固定在一个特定的地点。因此,选项B“It wasn’t fixed on a specific site. (它并没有固定在一个特定的地点。)”符合题意。故选B。
3.细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“Her poetry class teacher, Muller, commented, “People need poetry”, which might be the reason for the success of Barrows’s project. (她的诗歌课老师穆勒评论道:“人们需要诗歌”,这可能是巴罗斯项目成功的原因。)”可知,Muller认为PNP成功的原因是公众对诗歌的需求。因此,选项B“The public’s demand for poetry.(公众对诗歌的需求)”符合题意。故选B。
4.推理判断题。根据文章第四段“In the beginning, Barrows struggled to land on an idea. At last, though, it struck her that she could bring together her two worlds - parks and poetry. (起初,巴罗斯很难想出一个主意。然而,最后她突然想到她可以把她的两个世界——公园和诗歌——结合起来。)”以及第五段“The idea reminded her of Little Free Libraries, which was known for the bookstands placed across the city. ‘I was inspired by the Little Free Libraries, where you ‘take a book, leave a book’. And I thought, ‘Maybe I could do this with poetry,’” said Barrows.

Jesse Owens, an African-American athlete, faced enormous pressure in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. Despite racial mistreatment present at the Berlin Games, he made history by winning four Olympic gold medals in the 100m, 200m, 4×100m relay, and long jump events—an accomplishment no other Olympian had ever made. His remarkable achievement shattered (粉碎) Adolf Hitler’s plan to prove Aryan (雅利安人的) superiority.
While Owens’ accomplishment was unique, he might have lost one of his gold medals had it not been for the advice from an unlikely ally (盟友)—German long jumper Luz Long. During the long jump event, Owens fouled (犯规) on his first two attempts and had only one final chance to qualify for the final. In an act of sportsmanship, Long walked up and suggested Owens change his mark and take off well before the foul line in order to avoid another foul. Following Long’s advice, Owens jumped a distance of 25 feet on his final try to qualify for the final.
As it turned out, Owens bagged the gold, setting a new Olympic record (8.06m) while Long grabbed silver (7.87m). The German was the first to congratulate Owens and later walked around the stadium, arm-in-arm with Owens. They even posed together for pictures. It was a classy act of sportsmanship that stayed with Owens for the rest of his life. “It took a lot of courage for him to befriend me. You can melt down all the medals and cups I have and they wouldn’t be a plating on the 24-karat friendship I felt for Luz Long at that moment,” the American said.
Owens and Long stayed connected even after the Games. Long lost his life during the Battle of St Pietro later in 1943, but he wrote a touching letter to Owens before he died. In the letter, he begged Owens to find his young son after the war and tell him about his father.
Years have passed by but their bond still serves as a strong message, highlighting “how things can be between men on this earth”, as written in the letter.
2.What do we know about Owens?
A.Adolf Hitler supported him greatly.
B.He was mistreated because he was a black athlete.
C.He made history in the Olympic Games with ease.
D.He received five gold medals in the 1936 Olympic Games.
3.What did Long do to help Owens during the long jump event?
A.He fouled on his first two attempts.
B.He provided technical advice for Owens.

People say eyes are the windows to the soul. Yet behind the “windowpane” of my left eye, there was a leak (裂缝) that caused nearly unbearable pain. I was diagnosed with Coats’ disease at 8.
My life was consumed by pain and worsening vision. Despite taking medicine and undergoing three surgeries, nothing improved. Eventually, my diseased eye had to be removed. I was excited to get rid of it since that meant I could get a normal-looking prosthetic eye (义眼) and I would be free of pain. At 18, my eye removal surgery finally took place. The recovery was hard. My eye was swollen for a whole week. Yet once the swelling had gone down and the healing was done: No more pain.
However, walking around without an eye was embarrassing and I was sick of all the stares and questions. And then a new kind of pain appeared — a realization that I would never be like everyone else. To deal with this, I turned pain into humor and art. I wore eye patches (眼罩), styled my hair over the empty space, called myself “emo”, and made jokes.
Within a month, I visited a prosthetic eye expert. She made me an eye that looked exactly like my other eye. This experience was refreshing, and the shame of being different began to disappear.
When the new eye was put in place, I joyfully took countless selfies (自拍). I felt like the window to my soul had been fixed. I had another eye made that has a butterfly where the pupil (瞳孔) sits. I feel like I’ve turned my suffering into art. It has become self-expression. I wear my butterfly eye for special occasions to make me stand out. The window to my soul isn’t broken; it’s just custom-made.
2.Why was the author excited about her eye removal?
A.She could become more beautiful.
B.She suffered from eye leak on both eyes.
C.She couldn’t bear the slow healing of her eyes.
D.She was troubled by the pain and worsening vision.

Amy Purdy’s life has always been about doing the impossible. At 19 years old, Amy started to feel ill. As she felt worse, she thought of it as a flu. But, while taking an afternoon sleep, she suddenly was awake. “I heard a voice telling me to get up and look in the mirror,” she said during an interview with Oprah on her show Super Soul Sunday. “I looked at my reflection in the mirror,” she said, “I saw that my nose and my cheeks were purple… And I knew something was wrong.” Amy got a serious disease. Math had never been something I was good at since middle school. Classes became harder in high school, and I was even further from a math teacher’s dream student. So at the start of my freshman year, I had an aversion to math. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to do well, but simply, that I didn’t think I was able to do well. “I can’t” became my state of mind in all things related to math.
However, I was soon to learn that “I can’t” was not a choice in Mr. Green’s class.
Mr. Green always greeted us with open arms as he said, “Welcome! Smile! It’s a great day to be alive!” It was clear that Mr. Green had a true passion (热情) not only for math but for teaching. If Mr. Green ever experienced bad days in life, he never showed it. Mr. Green greeted us with that same smile every day. He encouraged each student, from the top achiever to the “I can’t” student.
I found myself looking forward to math class, although I still hated the subject itself. Being in Mr. Green’s presence made me feel good, as if I had the chance to succeed. As the year progressed, I spent increasingly more time on my homework, and I met with Mr. Green weekly. My classmates began to do the same, and it became “cool” to have lunch and talk with Mr. Green. We didn’t know it at that time, but he was changing our attitudes.
Though my story is not one of overnight success and I didn’t become a straight-A math student, my hard work did begin to pay off and my grades slowly. began to climb. There were hard times, of course. Difficult math questions sometimes succeeded in bringing me down, but Mr. Green kept reminding (提醒) me, “Kate, smile! It’s a great day to be alive!”

John “Charlie” Veron — widely known as “the Godfather of Coral Reef (珊瑚礁)” — is a celebrated expert who has personally discovered nearly a quarter of the world’s coral species and has spent the past 45 years diving Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. But now the 73-year-old is raising the alarm about its future. The Great Barrier Reef, one of the natural wonders, is 2,300 kilometers long and is the only living organism that can be seen from space. It is considered a World Treasure Site due to its biodiversity (生物多样性) with 30 species of whales, dolphins and sharks. Within the reef itself, there are also a number of tiny organisms and fishes.
However, its health is threatened. After the recent mass bleaching (白化) events, Veron dived in many areas of the Great Barrier Reef to see the damage for himself. “I was seeing and feeling it and it was absolutely shocking,” he says.
Veron says the mass bleaching events in the past few years — and the possibility of losing one of nature’s greatest treasures — were a wake-up call for the world in the wider battle against climate change, which, together with the rising sea temperature, is considered the greatest threats to the reef.
Fortunately, earlier this year, the Australian government announced nearly 400 million dollars in new funding towards scientific projects designed to help the reef.
There has been criticism in Australia about the slow process for the funding. “It won’t be wasted, though,” Veron says. “As scientists will be able to create a sort of seed bank to protect the species until the climate is good enough to rebuild the reef. What the scientists hope to do is to help nature along a bit after the big carbon dioxide increase is over and it starts to come down.”
2.Why is Veron known as “the Godfather of Coral Reef”?
A.Because he is 73 years old.
B.Because he has spent the past 45 years diving Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
C.Because he is raising the alarm about the future of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
D.Because he has personally discovered nearly a quarter of the world’s coral species.
3.What is the main idea of this passage?
A.Climate change is threatening biodiversity.
B.The Great Barrier Reef is in danger of extinction.
C.Scientists have found major factors in the reef’s blenching.
D.Veron has made great contributions to environmental protection.
4.What’s the cause of the mass bleaching events according to the passage?
A.Climate change. B.The decrease of carbon dioxide.
C.The slow process for the funding. D.Unclear.
5.Where is the passage probably from?
A.A research plan. B.A biography. C.A news report. D.A travel brochure.
【答案】1.D 2.B 3.A 4.C

When hurricanes, floods and fires hit, everyone can struggle to respond and cope, but new research suggests that women, people with kids under 18, renters and the poor are the most vulnerable (易受影响的) to weather disasters. “These groups need special help before disasters occur to make sure that they’re equipped to act,” said lead researcher Smitha Rao, an assistant professor of social work at the Ohio State University.
“Focusing on vulnerable groups, understanding their specific barriers and connecting them to resources within the community are key strategies to ensure no one is left behind when a disaster strikes,” Rao said in a university news release.
For the study, Rao’s team used data from the 2018 Federal Emergency Management Agency’s National Household Survey, which asked over 4,700 Americans questions about their preparedness for disasters. Rao’s team looked at factors linked with preparedness. They found that believing in being ready for disasters was tied with being at least adequately prepared. However, people who didn’t believe in their ability to act in an emergency were less likely to be prepared, the findings showed.
It was no surprise that poor people were less likely to be prepared, Rao said. People who are strenuous to meet day-to-day needs often don’t have the ability and resources to plan for everyday events, let alone for disasters, she said.
Rao’s group also found that people who had received information about preparing for a disaster were more likely to be prepared. “But 56% of the sample reported not receiving any information on preparedness in the past six months, so this is an important area of intervention (干预) ,” she said. “We need to find ways to help those who are most at risk of the consequences (后果) of disasters.”
2.How did the researchers get their findings?
A.By interviewing people. B.By doing an experiment.
C.By turning to earlier data. D.By doing daily observations.
3.What might have effects on people’s preparedness for a possible disaster?
A.Their family. B.Their confidence.
C.Their personality. D.Their determination.
4.What do the underlined words “ are strenuous ” mean in paragraph 4?
A.Struggle. B.Intend. C.Decide. D.Agree.
5.What can be done to help vulnerable groups prepare for a disaster in Rao’s opinion?
A.Providing them with material assistance.
B.Improving their skills to survive a disaster.
C.Educating them on various natural disasters.
D.Offering disaster-related information to them.
【答案】1.C 2.B 3.A 4.D

【导语】本文是一篇新闻报道。文章报道了一项关于天气灾害中弱势群体应对能力的研究,介绍了研究的主要发现、研究方法和结论,以及研究人员对于如何帮助这些弱势群体的建议。
1.推理判断题。根据文章第三段“For the study, Rao’s team used data from the 2018 Federal Emergency Management Agency’s National Household Survey, which asked over 4,700 Americans questions about their preparedness for disasters. Rao’s team looked at factors linked with preparedness.(在这项研究中,Rao的团队使用了2018年美国联邦紧急事务管理署的全国家庭调查数据,该调查向 4700 多名美国人询问了有关他们对灾难的准备情况的问题。)”
根据文章第三段“They found that believing in being ready for disasters was tied with being at least adequately prepared. However, people who didn’t believe in their ability to act in an emergency were less likely to be prepared, the findings showed.(他们发现,相信自己已为灾难做好准备与至少做了充分的准备之间存在关联。然而,研究结果显示,那些不相信自己在紧急情况下有行动能力的人,不太可能做好准备。)”可知,研究发现,,相信自己已为灾难做好准备与至少做了充分的准备之间存在关联,而那些不相信自己在紧急情况下有行动能力的人不太可能做好准备,这表明人们的信心对他们是否为可能发生的灾难做好准备有影响。故选B。
3.词义猜测题。根据划线单词所在句“It was no surprise that poor people were less likely to be prepared, Rao said. People who are strenuous to meet day-to-day needs often don’t have the ability and resources to plan for everyday events, let alone for disasters, she said.( Rao说,穷人不太可能做好准备并不令人意外。她说,那些连日常需求都……的人往往没有能力和资源去为日常事务做规划,更不用说应对灾难了。)”中的“poor people were less likely to be prepared”可知,此处说的是穷人的情况。 故选A。
4.细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“Rao’s group also found that people who had received information about preparing for a disaster were more likely to be prepared. “But 56% of the sample reported not receiving any information on preparedness in the past six months, so this is an important area of intervention (干预) ,” she said. “We need to find ways to help those who are most at risk of the consequences (后果) of disasters.”(Rao的团队还发现,那些收到过有关灾难防范信息的人更有可能做好准备。她说:“但是,参与调查的样本中,有56%的人表示在过去的六个月里没有收到任何有关灾难防范的信息,所以这是一个重要的干预领域。我们需要找到方法来帮助那些最容易受到灾难后果影响的人。”)”可知,Rao的团队发现收到过有关灾难防范信息的人更有可能做好准备,所以在Rao看来,为弱势群体提供与灾难相关的信息可以帮助他们为灾难做准备。故选D。

One quiet night, a big, wild bear shocked everyone by breaking into a hospital. In its mouth, it gently held a small, unknown animal, which was unusual for a bear to do. Hana, a calm young nurse, was amazed by the bear’s behavior. While others ran away, she stayed, feeling the bear needed help. She tried to show the bear she meant no harm, and the bear seemed to understand her peaceful thoughts.
The hospital workers quickly asked everyone to leave, but Hana wanted to assist the bear. She managed to guide the bear into a room, giving herself time to think. She realized the bear wasn’t being unfriendly but was asking for help. Hana asked her friends for help, but they were afraid. Then, Steve, a skilled doctor and a good friend, agreed to help her. Together, they went back to the room where the bear waited, making a loud, worried sound.
Hana and Steve followed the bear into the forest, feeling they needed to help right away. The bear took them to an old well where some animals were crying for help. With Peter, an animal expert, on the phone, they used a rope and cloth to safely lift the animals out. The bear watched, seeming to understand. Once the animals were safe, Hana and Steve needed to find a place for them. Fortunately, one of their friends knew a local home that could care for the special animals.
Hana often went to see the animals at that place. She was happy when she got to know them. This was very different from the fear she had in the forest. Hana knew she had done the right thing by following the bear. It took her to a place where she got unexpected happiness and a strong friendship with her new animal friends.
