And so, over the next month, I built my home. Most of it was made from sails I had taken from the ship. I built a table and a chair, too, and took a bed from one of the rooms on the ship. And last of all, I built a large wall around my home. I did this because it made me feel safer from animals and men. The walls were high, and there was no door. You had to climb a ladder to get in.
Every night, before falling to sleep, tired with the day’s work, I had time to think. And every night, the same thoughts came. I thought about my friends, who had all been taken from me by the sea. Why was I not also taken? Was I lucky to be alive, here, alone, on this island? Was I alone? Were there other people here? Were they dangerous to me?
And every night, I would ease my thoughts, by saying, “Be happy that you have food and something over your head to keep the rain out. Wish for nothing more. Work hard every day, and wait as long as you have to. One day a ship may pass. Be ready for that ship at all times.”

Harry picked it up in surprise. No one had ever written to him before. Who would? He had no friends or other relatives. But here it was, a letter for him, with just a simple address:
“Hurry up! What are you doing, checking for letter bombs (炸弹)?” Uncle Vernon laughed at his own joke.
Harry went back into the kitchen, still holding the letter. He handed Uncle Vernon the bill and the postcard. Uncle Vernon quickly opened the bill and then read the postcard.
“Marge’s ill,” he said, looking at the postcard. “Ate something strange.”
Just as Harry wanted to open the letter, Dudley suddenly shouted,
“Dad! Harry’s got something! ”
Uncle Vernon grabbed (抓) it from him.
“That’s mine! ” Harry said, trying to grab it back.
“Who’d be writing to you?” said Uncle Vernon, opening the letter and looking at it. His face went from red to green, then to white, like old porridge.
“Petunia!” Uncle Vernon shouted.
Dudley tried to grab the letter, but Uncle Vernon held it high. Aunt Petunia turned around and took the letter and read the first line. She looked like she might fall down.
“Vernon! Oh my god -Vernon!” she said.

(24-25九年级上·重庆·期末)
One day, when I was standing in the cool shade (阴凉处) of a big tree and my master was carefully cleaning my feet, a boy came by with a big stick. He stopped and began to talk to my master. “That’s a fine horse,”said the boy. “But can he run fast?”
“Of course, he can,” said my master. “He is young, strong, and full of energy. But I don’t push him hard without a reason.”
The boy laughed. “What’s the point of a strong horse if you don’t make him run fast? You’re wasting him!”
My master looked up with a serious expression. “It is never a waste to treat an animal well.” he said. A horse like this will serve you loyally (忠诚地) if you treat him kindly. Overwork or bad treatment will break his spirit and destroy him. A good horse needs trust and care to stay strong.”
The boy shook his shoulders and walked away, looking a bit confused (迷惑). But I felt proud and happy. My master knew how to manage me. He taught me to carry myself with confidence and to follow orders without fear. I loved to run freely in the fields, feeling the wind rush past my ears and the grass under my hooves (蹄). But I also knew I could trust my master not to hurt me.

“Welcome to our new ‘classroom’!” said Chen Dong, one of the three astronauts of the Shenzhou XIV mission.
They were giving a science class 400 kilometers above Earth on Oct 12. It was the third space class from the Tiangong space station, but the first one from the Wentian lab module (实验舱) since its launch in July. The former two classes were held in the Tianhe core module (核心舱).
What does the new “classroom” look like? Chen, together with Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe, showed us around. “The beds in the Tianhe module are placed horizontally (横着), while our beds are kept upright,” said Liu. That means astronauts in the Wentian lab module need to sleep standing up! But as Liu explained, people don’t feel any difference because there’s no gravity (重力) in space. Astronauts can even sleep on the ceiling (天花板) or upside down!
The astronauts also showed their “space farm”, where lettuce, wheat (小麦), thale cress (拟南芥) and rice are grown. “Take a picture!” “Send the picture!” Through a voice-controlled camera, Chen already sent a picture of the thale cress to scientists on Earth. Then he used scissors to cut a sample (样本). “I’ll put it into a fridge at -80℃ and later give it to scientists on Earth,” said Chen. Scientists will study how the environment of space affects the growth of plants.
“Can you see the water drops coming from the leaves? This is called ‘guttation’ (植物吐水现象),” said Liu, holding the well-grown rice. In space, the water drops are much bigger than those on Earth. So people can clearly see the guttation.
“We hope in the near future, we can harvest (收获) the food grown on our own,” said Chen. “Maybe one day, we can harvest food on the other planets like moon or even Mars!”

Pumpkin carving (雕刻) at Halloween is a family tradition. In the pumpkin field, I compete with my two brothers, Jay and Jason, and sister Mary, to find out the biggest pumpkin. And as the eldest child I have an advantage—I carried an 85-pounder back last year. I still kept the picture of the pumpkin with my name, Joe, on it in my bedroom.
This year, it was hard to tell whether my choice or the one chosen by my 14-year-old brother, Jason, was the winner. I was determined (下定决心的) to tell others that I was the winner for sure. I’m unsure now why I thought forcing my head inside the pumpkin would solve the problem, but it seemed to make perfect sense at that time.
With the pumpkin on the table, I bowed and pressed my head. At first, my nose shortly prevented my entry. Finally, I managed to put my whole head into it. I could tell how heavy the pumpkin was myself!
My excitement was short-lived. When I pulled hard to get out, my nose got in the way. It was only then that I realized getting out was going to be more difficult than getting in. I got scared as I tried hard to find the right angle (角度), but it was no use. “I can’t get it out!” I shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud from the pumpkin. “Now, Joe becomes the pump-king!” Jason said with laughter from every corner of the house.

“Goodbye, my dears!” she called as it drove away. The girls waved their hands cheerfully until the carriage turned the corner. Then, with sad faces and heavy hearts, they went back inside.
“The house seems very empty now,” said Meg.
“Our motto is ‘Hope and keep busy’,” said Jo brightly. She was trying to forget how sad she was feeling. “So I’m going to go and see Aunt March. What about you, Meg?”
“I’m going to teach the King children,” replied Meg.
“And Amy and I are going to help Hannah with the housework,” said Beth.
“I think anxiety is very interesting,” Amy said seriously. Her remark made her sisters laugh, and they all started to feel a little better.

There was no time to feel sad. I had to build my home soon, or spend another night up in a tree. Also, there was the food and other things that needed to be put in a safe place from animals and rain.
I went back down the hill and found a river. This, I thought, would be a good place for me.“Here,” I thought, “I can get my drinking water, and over there is a cave, where I can put all the food.”

“Hurry up! What are you doing, checking for letter bombs (炸弹)?” Uncle Vernon laughed at his own joke.

“Dad! Harry’s got something! ”

“Who’d be writing to you?” said Uncle Vernon, opening the letter and looking at it. His face went from red to green, then to white, like old porridge.
“Petunia!” Uncle Vernon shouted.

Passage 1
Later that day, another horse told me about his old owner, who often hit him and made him pull heavy things up high hills. “My legs are weaker now because of it,” he said sadly. “I wish I had a master like yours. He seems to really care for you.”
Hearing his story made me feel even more thankful for the kindness I had experienced. I realized then that not all horses were as lucky as I was, and I promised myself to work my best for my kind master.

Passage 2
(23-24九年级上·重庆九龙坡·期末)
1.Where was the third space class held?

Once, there was a poor slave (奴隶) named Androclus in Rome. His owner was a very unkind man, so he ran away to the forest, where he found a lion lying on the ground. He was scared and ready to get away, but the lion didn’t run after him. It was groaning in pain Androclus went up to the lion and the lion put out its foot which was bleeding (流血). Androclus saw a long, sharp thorn (刺) in its foot and he pulled it out quickly. The lion soon could rise and licked (舔) Androclus’ hand like a dog.
Androclus and the lion became friends. For a long time, the lion would bring him food every day. That made Androclus find his new life a very happy one.
One day, some soldiers rushed into the forest and took Androclus back to Rome. As a punishment, he would have to fight a hungry lion in front of the unkind slave owners. When the day came, thousands of people went to see the fight. The door opened and Androclus was brought in, empty-handed. He was almost dead with fear, for the roars (咆哮) of the lion could already be heard. Then, the hungry lion rushed in. With a single jump, it reached the poor slave.
Androclus gave a great cry, but not out of fear. It was his old friend, the lion in the forest. People saw Androclus put his arms around the lion’s neck. In return, the lion licked him lovingly. They could not understand what was happening.
“No man wants to be my friend. Only this poor lion is kind to me,” Androclus explained. At that moment, people were not so unkind as their fathers and grandfathers had been. “Give them both freedom!” they cried.

Passage 2
(24-25九年级上·重庆沙坪坝·期末)
Looking back today, I dare to say, that is the most embarrassing moment in my life.

Choose our pumpkins
Try to weigh the pumpkins
Put my head into the pumpkin
Be stuck in the pumpkin

The next day was also cold and gray. Nobody talked much during breakfast. Mrs March was pale and tired. The girls tried to hide their tears.
Then Mr Brooke arrived with the carriage and it was time for Mrs March to leave. She kissed her daughters one by one and said, “Keep busy, my dears, and never lose hope!”
“Yes, Mother.”
“Meg, look after your sisters. If you need help, ask Hannah or Mr Laurence. Jo, be patient and cheerful, and write to me often. Beth and Amy, help with the housework and be obedient (顺从的).
“Yes, Mother! Don’t worry!”
She got into the carriage and opened the window.
For a week the girls kept to their motto and worked hard. Then Jo got a bad cold and had to stay at home. She didn’t mind this at all because she didn’t like going to Aunt March’s. She was happy to lie on the sofa all day with her books and medicine. Amy got bored with doing housework so she took out her pencils and drawing book again. Meg went to teach the King children every day, and sewed. She spent the rest of her time writing long letters to her mother and reading the letters from Mr Brooke.

But she’s worried that Macbeth won’t do anything to make it happen. So she plans to kill King Duncan, who is coming to stay at the Macbeths’ castle (城堡) that night. At first, Macbeth doesn’t like the idea, but Lady Macbeth achieves dominance over him. She forces him to believe that killing Duncan is the best thing to do. That night, while King Duncan is sleeping, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth get his guards drunk. When the guards are asleep, Macbeth comes into Duncan’s room and kills him with a knife. The next morning, when the king is found dead, Macbeth kills the guards and tells everyone that he did this because they killed the king. Duncan’s son, Malcolm, who knows the truth behind, is scared. “Good morning,” the little prince (王子) said politely.
“Who are you?” said the little prince.
“Be my friends. I am all alone,” he said. But there’s only the echo (回声).
“What a strange planet!” the little prince thought. “And the people have no imagination. They repeat whatever one says to them... On my planet I had a flower; she was always the first to speak…”
After walking for a long time through sand, rocks and snow, the little prince at last arrived at where people live.
“Good morning,” he said.
He was standing before a garden, full of roses.
“Good morning,” said the roses.
The little prince looked at them. They all looked like his flower.
“Who are you?” he asked.
“We are roses,” the roses said.
He felt very sad. His flower had told him that she was the only one of her kind in all the universe. Here were five thousand of them, all like, in one single garden.
“She would be very angry,” he said to himself, “If she saw that…she would cough a lot, and she would pretend (假装) that she was dying, to avoid being laughed at. I should nurse her back to life . If I did not do that, she would really allow herself to die...”
Then he went on thinking to himself, “I thought that I was rich and had a special flower in all the universe; but all I had was a common rose, which doesn’t make me a very great prince.”

Passage 4

Huck is my name, Huckleberry Finn. The story started when my best friend, Tom Sawyer and I found $12,000 in a cave. That money made us rich. We got $6,000 each. Judge Thatcher put it in the bank.
Then a kind old lady called Douglas invited me to live with her because I haven’t got a family or a home. My mother died a long time ago, and then my dad, Pap, disappeared. When he drank a lot, he often beat me. I was scared of him. I didn’t go to school like the other boys of my age. I lived on the streets and in the woods.
My life changed after I lived with Douglas. She gave me a bed to sleep in and bought new clothes for me. She read stories to me every night and taught me how to eat at a table. But then her sister Miss Watson arrived. She brought her black slave (奴隶) Jim with her. I liked Jim but I didn’t like Miss Watson very much. She often shouted at me.
Douglas sent me to school every day. I didn’t like going there at first because learning was very difficult. But when I could read and write a bit, I didn’t mind going.
The months passed and winter came. The weather got cold. One morning I woke up and there was snow on the ground. On my way to school I saw some footprints outside Douglas’s house. There was a cross on the heel (鞋跟) of the left one. My heart jumped. Only one person wore boots (靴子) with a cross on the left heel! Pap!
“He’s heard about my money.” I thought. “And he wants it!”
That night I went to see Jim. Jim had a magic ball made of animal hair. There was a spirit inside the ball that could answer people’s questions about the future.
