Rock Creek Park scientists, volunteers, parents and kids look for examples of everything that’s alive there deer, rabbits, caterpillars, spiders and butterflies 24 hours get people interested in biodiversity 作者编号:33008 Introduce BioBlitz based on the table. BioBlitz is a research project held in Rock Creek Park. Scientists, volunteers, parents and kids can all participate in it. Their goal is to look for examples of everything that’s alive there. They may find deer, rabbits, caterpillars, spiders and butterflies. They have to finish in 24 hours. The purpose is to get people interested in biodiversity. 作者编号:33008 Task 6 Watch the video again and talk about how you feel about BioBlitz. 作者编号:33008 Task 6 Watch the video again and talk about how you feel about BioBlitz. In my opinion, BioBlitz is both fun and meaningful. It gives people an opportunity to get close to living things in nature and study them so that they can be better protected. I don’t really like BioBlitz. The animals and insects are living a peaceful life there and they should not be disturbed. I don’t think the participants in the video are showing enough respect for them. 作者编号:33008 Task 7 Discuss these questions in groups. 1.This BioBlitz was conducted in the middle of a large city. Do you think there is as much biodiversity in your city or town? Why or why not? 2. Are there any parks in your city or town where you can find many different kinds of plants and animals? What activities can you do there? After you watch 作者编号:33008 I think there is a lot of biodiversity in my town, because there are mountains, a lake, and plenty of parks and green space. 1.This BioBlitz was conducted in the middle of a large city. Do you think there is as much biodiversity in your city or town? Why or why not? 作者编号:33008 Behind my home there is a large park which is filled with trees. There are all sorts of plants and insects there, but not so many other animals. It is a good place to take a walk, or to sit and enjoy the view of the nearby lake. 2. Are there any parks in your city or town where you can find many different kinds of plants and animals? What activities can you do there? 作者编号:33008 Narrator: Welcome to Rock Creek Park. It’s a big park in the middle of Washington. D.C. Today, this park is going to be the site of a big research project. Dozens of scientists from around the United States along with hundreds of volunteers are here for something called a BioBlitz. In a BioBlitz, teens of scientists, parents, kids, and volunteers all go to a park and look for examples of everything that’s alive there. They work in teams to count every living thing that they find—from the big animals like deer and rabbits to tiny plants. But they only have 24 hours to do it. Dr. Stuart Pimm, an ecologist from Duke University, is certainly excited about the event. He studies biodiversity. 作者编号:33008 Dr Pimm: The extraordinary thing about this BioBlitz is just how much stuff there is here. This is really where the wild things are. There really is a huge amount of stuff in this city park. Narrator: Park rangers are there to help. Here, they are helping a group to catch caterpillars, spiders, and butterflies. Insects are an important part of the BioBlitz. One reason is there are a lot of them. They also come in a great variety of color, shapes and behaviors. It’s easier to see how special they are when you look at them close up. Photographer David Littschwager usually takes photos of endangered species, but at the BioBlitz he’s taking photos of insects. 作者编号:33008 David Littschwager: We see a lot of pictures of lions and tigers and bears but you don’t often see a portrait of a spider nice and close. Some people don’t like spiders, but I have a great affection for them. But I like them to stay on the glass. Narrator: Littschwager worked all night taking pictures, but he wasn’t the only one who didn’t sleep. People had only 24 hours to find all the living things in the park so all the participants worked hard until the final minute. And even at the end, there were a lot of plants and creatures that they couldn’t identify. The real purpose of the BioBlitz is to get people interested in the biodiversity that’s all around them even in their own backyards. So, what are you waiting for? The clock is ticking. Isn’t a time to start counting the living things in your backyard? 作者编号:33008 Maintain ecological balance and protect plants and animals. 维护生态平衡,保护动植物。 Summary 作者编号:33008 Make a short video of your exploring the biodiversity in your neighborhood. Introduce the living things you find there in the video. Homework 作者编号:33008 $
