The author Jules Verne was born in 1828 in France. His father was a lawyer, and Verne studied to be a lawyer, too. He never took over his father’s law practice but decided to be a writer instead. He wrote plays for theaters in Paris, but none were as famous as his novels: Around the world in Eighty Days, Journey to the center of the Earth, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
Verne liked sailing and the sea. He and his wife spent time sailing on Verne’s ship, which was named the Saint- Michel. They sailed to many places and had adventures that were later used to write his books. Verne was one of the first science fiction writers.
The book 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is about a captain named Nemo who travels on a submarine, a kind of vessel that travels under water. His submarine is called Nautilus. Submarine are common today, but Verne wrote about this submarine many years before they existed! Some of Verne’s ideas came true later in his history.
The story takes the readers to many places. Verne describes some real places like the Mediterranean Sea, the South Pole, and the Antarctic. The story starts in New York City. But the story also tells of visits to some fictional locations like Atlantis, an underwater city.
Many people think that the title refers to how deep the submarine travels under the water. However, the submarine never travels more than a few leagues under the sea. There is one mention that the submarine is four leagues below the water, which is almost 14 miles. The title actually refers to the distance the submarine travels during the course of the book. The submarine travels 20,000 leagues, which is a little more than 69,000 miles or 111,000 kilometers. The Nautilus takes readers on a very long trip!
Main Characters

“There it is! There it is!” It was almost dark at the end of the second day. Ned Land had come out of his cabin and was standing on the deck. Everybody rushed to him because he was pointing to the monster. The monster made a bright l 1 under the sea.
“It’s a huge electric eel(鳗鱼)!”cried one sailor.
“It’s coming toward us!” shouted a 2 .
The captain tried to get out of the way, but the monster was much faster than the ship. It f 3 us.
“Why don’t you attack it?” I asked Captain Farragut.
“It’s too dark to attack it, Dr.Aronnax. We will wait until morning.”
S___4___, the monster’s light disappeared. It was dark. We could not see it, but we could hear it. It sounded like a huge engine when it b 5 .
“Ned, you were the first to see it. You will get the $2000,” said Captain Farragut.
“I was just want to get close enough to harpoon it,” he replied.
The sailors loaded their guns. Ned Land sharpened his harpoon. Everything was r 6 .
When morning came, we saw the monster about two kilometers behind us. It r 7 from the water and beat its tail a 8 the waves. It sent two spouts of water into the air. It began to swim around us.
Captain Farragut told the sailors to steer the ship toward it at f 9 speed. The ship raced forwards, but it could get no closer to the monster. It did not dive but moved away as q 10 as we moved toward it. We went faster. The monster went faster. We could not get closer. It played with us by making circles around us.

"Extremely well, my gallant lad," I r 2 . "And how about you, Mr. Ned Land?"
"Like a log, professor. But I must be imagining things, because it s 3 like I'm breathing a sea breeze!"
A seaman couldn't be wrong on this topic, and I told the Canadian w 4 had gone on while he slept.
"Good!" he said. "That explains perfectly all t 5 bellowing(咆哮) we heard, when our so-called narwhal lay in sight of the Abraham Lincoln."
"Perfectly, Mr. Land. It was catching its breath!"
"Only I've no idea what time it is, Professor Aronnax, unless m 6 it's dinnertime?"
"Dinnertime, my fine harpooner? I'd say at least breakfast time, because we've certainly w 7 up to a new day."
"Which indicates," Conseil replied, "that we've s 8 twenty-four hours in slumber(沉睡)."
"That's my assessment," I r _____.
"I won't argue with you," Ned Land answered. "But dinner or breakfast, that steward(乘务员) will be plenty welcome w 10 he brings the one or the other."

Conseil and I put on our diving suits, and so did Captain Nemo and one of his men. We stepped into a room f 4 with water, and another door opened. We went through it, and we were on the sea floor. It was an a 5 experience.
We were about ten meters under the water. The light from the sun reached us. We walked and enjoyed the colors of the shells, fish and seaweed. They looked very c 6 . (2022·江苏·盐城市鹿鸣路初级中学三模)(Ned, Conceil and I were taken to the ship. Captain Nemo showed us around. He led us into a room as a museum with a great collection and then took us to the library and the galley(画廊).)
①Captain Nemo was very proud of his collection and the ship—the Nautilus. Then, he took me to my cabin(房舱). It was a very comfortable bedroom and was next to his cabin. His cabin had an instrument panel(仪表板), and on this he could see everything that he needed to know to sail the Nautilus.
②He told me that he had found a way to make electricity using salt and mercury(汞). This electricity gave the Nautilus all the power it needed to move through the water. Huge pumps(泵)filled and emptied tanks of air and water to make the Nautilus sink or rise. I was surprised to find that the Nautilus even had a small dinghy(小艇). Captain Nemo could enter the dinghy from the Nautilus while it was underwater and go to the surface. Then, the Nautilus would come up to collect him. As we walked to the engine room(发动机舱), we passed the large kitchen and crew(船员)room. The door of the crew room was closed, so I could not see how many men were asked to work on the Nautilus.
③Captain Nemo showed me the engine and explained how it worked. It was difficult to understand how the tanks, rudders and batteries worked. However, I had to believe it because the engine was working! The Nautilus was seventy meters long and eight meters wide. It had a cylindrical(圆柱形的)shape with points on each end and weighed 1,500 tons. A pilot sat in a small room with strong windows, and a powerful electric light showed him where he was going.
④“It’s a wonderful ship!” I exclaimed.
⑤“I love it as if it were my child.” he replied.
⑥“How did you build it in secret?” I asked. “All the parts were made in different countries. I used different names each time I placed an order. I took all the parts to a desert island, and my workmen put them together. Then, we burned our workshops.”
⑦“It must have cost a great deal of money!” I exclaimed again.
⑧“Millions of dollars,” he replied. “However, I have billions.”

In the late 19th century in Europe, many people had more money to spend than before. They had better education, so they could read about the world outside of their own countries. They mostly couldn’t afford to actually travel, but they could dream about travel.
Surely the fact that he wanted to travel and see the world is one of the reasons why French writer Jules Verne’s great science fiction Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870) was such a success. He made travel seem so exciting. He made sure to fill his adventures with real and imagined wonders.
The story begins when a sea monster(怪物) that looks like a whale(鲸) attacks and sinks( 击沉) an American boat. The great powers meet in New York and decide to send a boat to deal with the monster. The crew(船员) will include Ned Land, a famous whale hunter, a sea biologist called Professor Aronnax and his assistant, Conseil.
After a terrible battle (交火), the crew’s ship sinks, and Aronnax, Land and Conseil find themselves hanging on to the “monster”. Of course, it’s not an animal at all but a submarine(潜艇) called the Nautilus. Its pilot and builder is Captain Nemo, who saves but also kidnaps the men.
Nemo hates men. We don’t learn why, at least in this book. All we know is that he’s built the Nautilus so that he can be out of reach of the world’s governments. We were locked in a darkness room, Ned tried to escape from the submarine. I remembered that unforgettable day. When morning came, we saw the monster behind us. After fighting against it, Conseil, Ned and I were thrown into the sea and stood on the monster. We thought it was a giant narwhal. In fact, it was a submarine. A few seconds later, eight men came out and pulled us into this room on the submarine.
Suddenly, two men entered. The tall man was Captain Nemo. He even knew everything we did with him. He asked us to promise not to escape. Finally, we reached an agreement.
Captain Nemo showed me the art gallery with many paintings by famous artists and a museum that contained many thousands of wonderful shells, pearls and other treasures from the sea. I had never seen such a good museum. “What a wonderful ship, it must have cost a fortune” “That’s true!” he replied. “I love it as if it were my child.”
A few days later, Captain Nemo invited me and my friends to go hunting with him in the forests of Crespo Island. About one hundred savages followed us and tried to come into the ship. Captain Nemo didn’t worry about them. When they put their hand on the rail, they all fell back and ran away. Captain Nemo had put electricity into the rail. Anybody who touched it would receive an electric shock.
One day, he asked me to follow him to another room. A man lay on a bed with a very bad head wound. I looked at it. "What happened?” Captain Nemo answered, “Something broke in the engine. A heavy piece of metal hit his head.” He is going to die soon,” I said. “Nothing can save him.” Tears filled Captain Nemo's eyes, and he asked me to leave.
We sailed through a sea of milk and huge armies of shell sand, sometimes large crowds of sharks. I realized that I did not really want to escape.
