"I'm going to fail !My best friend cried. She and I had this conversation almost every day
while we were in high school.
The truth was that my friend never failed in any subjects I just think that she can't accept
failures because she lives her life as a perfectionist(完美主义者).What she fails to understand
is that a lot of good can come from failures.
For example, failure can help build relationships.Once I was cooking dinner for a friend.I
was tired, and several dishes I tried to make turned out bad.I grew more and more upset until
my friend told me that I shouldn't worry. She cared more about our friendship than the dishes.
That day,I learned that failure doesn't always make people dislike you.In fact, after she said
those words to me,I grew closer to her.
Failure can make success even more exciting.Every few years, there would be an important
test in the PE class at our school.Students had to run a mile within eight minutes.I was never
good at running,so I failed every time until the third year at school. Then I began working out
regularly, and yet I still failed that year.A few days later, however, the teacher gave me and
some other students another chance to run and I got a pass finally! You can't imagire how
excited I was after that.I felt the memory of the success was as sweet as honey, because I had to
overcome failure to reach it.
Now its clear to see that failure can teach us good lessons. It's not an end-it can be a

Before arriving in China,I had read various books relating to China, and my fascination were
increasing.
Therefore, when I arrived,I was very excited to be living in this huge historically and culturally
rich country.The food,the landmarks,the big cities and everyday life-I couldn't wait to
explore.
Yet despite my passion, learning Chinese hadn't even entered my mind. This wasn't laziness,
but rather fear at the thought of trying to learn what is regarded as the most difficult language in
the world.Besides this,I was living in Shanghai,an international city, with many people speaking
English as a second language-I decided English would be enough.
However, after a year in China I began to observe that while many foreigners did not speak
Chinese, there were plenty who did.Perhaps it was achievable after all?In addition,I felt
uncomfortable with how many Chinese people could speak English and yet I couldn't even speak
the most basic Chinese. With these factors in mind and a thirst for a new challenge,I decided to
begin my language journey and my only regret is that I didn't start earlier.
Learning to speak Chinese isn't as insurmountable as I once thought. When I speak to native
Chinese speakers in Chinese, they almost always understand me,I have also not found it too
difficult to remember characters and I am now even able to write over 400 characters. The thing I
find most challenging is listening since native speakers talk at such a speed.I can't always
understand what's been said.
My biggest takeaway from learning Chinese is that it's not only achievable but can also be
enjoyable.Learning Chinese not only helped me in day-to-day life, but deepened my cultural
understanding of such a fascinating country. So,to all my non-Chinese friends I say this, take up

the challenge and believe in ourselves.

B.Support from many friends around him.
C.Eagerness to take up the challenge
D.A thirst to prove his gift for language.
30.What does the underlined word"insurmountable"in the 5th paragraph mean?
A.Valueless.B.Difficult.C.Unnecessary.D.Unacceptable.
31.What can we learn from the author's experience?
A.Love breaks down difficulties.B.Hard work pays off.
C.Hard work is the key to success.D.Bravery opens up a new world.

To the human ears,a field of flowers is silent, except the noise of birds and insects. To certain
inimal ears, however,a field of flowers is full of conversation. Now,scientists have discovered
hat plants actually make noise as a way of communicating. In other words, they talk!
It has long been known that plants communicate when they are stressed. You need only watch a
iouseplant to realize that a plant lowers its head when it needs water,or turns yellow when it has
)een watered too much. Some plants also send out a bad smell when stressed to try and stop insects
rom taking advantage of their stressed state and eating them up
Now,a new study that was pubusned in Lell and conducted by researchers at Tel Aviv
Jniversity, shows that not only do plants express themselves in the above ways when stressed,
hey also make sounds,like talking.
According to NoCamels, plants send out sounds at frequencies (between 40 to 80
ilohertz-out of the range()of human ears, but within the range of some ammals."Bats(
)make sounds in these ranges all the time, and mice dogs and eats can partly hear within it,"Dr.
ilach Hadany, one of the authors of the study, told NoCamels.
What is surprising about Hadany's study is that the researchers have managed to understand and
roup the sounds that plants make for the first time.Plants that are not stressed make about one
oise per hour, but plants that are stressed, thirsty,or injured make many hundreds of sounds per
our;and each of these sounds seems to show the certain type of stress the plant is under.
This type of information could be key for agriculture().Knowing what sounds their plants
re making will help farmers determine whether their plants are in danger or disease and allow
nem to make the necessary changes to allow their plants to grow well.
32,Why do some plants send out a bad smell?
A.To show they hate birds.
B.Fo say they are in need of water.
C.To protect themselves from danger.D.To tell people to stop watering them.

I was preparing lunch in the kitchen while my 2-year-old son,Adam, was playing by
himself at the front door.Suddenly,I heard him shouting,"Look,Mama!Doggie!"I put away
what I was doing and stuck my head out of the door.Brandy our next-aoor neighbor's 11
-year-old dog,was there again.I quickly ran out,shouting at her:"Go away!"
Brandy's owner,an old woman, had died about a month before. Her family had emptied her
house and put up a"For Sale"sign in the front yard, but they had left old Brandy behind.Nowhere
to go,for weeks, she'd been wandering around the neighborhood.
It wasn't that I disliked dogs or anything like that.I just didn't think about them very much.I
had never kept a dog as a pet and had never thought to get one.
Brandy ran away and I stayed outside with Adam. Then the phone was ringing.I went inside
to get the call. When I came back,Adam was gone.I searched the yard, front and back, then the
basketball court and public pool.No trace of him.I was so nervous that I ran back home and called
the police,then my husband.
We searched the neighborhood thoroughly.Suddenly I heard a dog barking in the distance.
"It's coming from the woods,"one of my neighbors said.We followed the barking to a wooded
cliff().There we found my son,and he was just inches away from the edges of the cliff, fast
asleep.Brandy was beside him, leaning against him to keep him away from the edge. When I
picked Adam up,Brandy sank down on the ground, breathing quickly. She must have been holding
Adam there for hours!

1.续写的词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I thanked the police and brought Adam and Brandy back to our house.
After a brief discussion with my husband,I made a decision.
