When I was an 8-year-old boy, my family spent a week at my Aunt Charlotte and Uncle Richard’s home in Tennessee. My older cousins were busy playing with the neighborhood kids, taking me along with them. One day, I spotted a boy, Jack, around my age, playing outside a weathered old house down the street. We struck up a conversation and quickly became friends, spending the next few days playing together.
One afternoon, my cousins felt thirsty and tired after playing games, so we entered Jack’s house to get a drink of water. I was struck by what I saw: The shelves were bare, and the fridge was empty. Jack explained that it was just the end of the month. His mom would get paid in a few days, and then the shelves would be full again. I was deeply troubled. I had never seen anyone completely out of food before.
That evening, I subconsciously mentioned the matter to Aunt Charlotte. Without a word, she took a freshly baked pie from the oven and disappeared out of the back door. I later learned that having experienced a period of hunger, she exactly understood what it was like to be without food. Then she gave the extra pie to Jack’s mom. For the rest of our visit, Aunt Charlotte prepared a hearty lunch for both of us every day. She also made sure that she would send over some fresh vegetables and fruits from their garden, ensuring that Jack’s family had nutritious meals.
At that time, I didn’t realize the profound lesson she was teaching me. Aunt Charlotte was a shining example of generosity. She showed me how to live with empathy, how to give without expecting anything in return, how to share what we have, and, most importantly, how to love. Her quiet, selfless acts left a lasting impression on me, teaching me that true compassion often lies in the small, everyday gestures that can make a big difference in someone’s life. She didn’t just give food. She gave hope and dignity, showing that even in tough times, a helping hand can lighten the burden.
4. Why was Jack’s house empty of food?
A. His fridge was too old to hold extra food. B. His mom was too busy to buy some food.
C. His family lacked the money to afford food. D. His family had just cleared food completely.
5. How did the author help Jack?
A. By telling the situation to his aunt. B. By preparing a hearty lunch for him.
C. By inviting him to eat the pie together. D. By giving the things in the oven to him.
6. Which word best describes Aunt Charlotte?
A. Fair. B. Busy. C. Tough. D. Charitable.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Sadness of Poverty B. A Lesson in Silent Kindness
C. The Lasting Childhood Friendship D. A Chance to Cook Perfect Meals

Teachers need to fully understand how AI actually works so that they can make wise decisions on when and how to use it. I recently met with a kindergarten teacher who was very worried. She asked me, “Do I really have to use AI with my kids? I don’t even know what it is.” She was under such pressure, and that’s not healthy. It’s an incredibly difficult and unfair situation for teachers to be placed in. That’s why AI literacy (人工智能素养), along with supporting teachers with the integration of AI literacy in their classrooms, is a main priority for me. It’s very important to slow down and make sure teachers feel comfortable and confident before integrating AI into schools.
It’s important to think about using AI in ways suitable for different ages and address privacy concerns. While there are still gaps, I remain optimistic. AI can make life easier and help us be more productive and creative if used as a helpful partner.
How do these innovations shape the future of education? Are you fearful or hopeful? I’m hopeful that this could be a turning point where teaching and learning are greatly changed, as education has changed little since it began.
AI is here to stay, so we have to decide to make it positive in the ways we want. If we don’t do anything, it could have negative effects. This feels like a big change, but people were also worried when computers and smartphones were first introduced to schools. We have adapted to those and will adapt to life with AI too.
One of the fundamental goals of education is to prepare our students to contribute meaningfully to society. With things changing as rapidly as they are, we need to equip students with the abilities they will need to navigate and grow in a constantly developing world. We should emphasize learning how to learn and how to adapt.
8. What concerned the kindergarten teacher?
A. Supporting kids to learn AI. B. Creating new technology for kids.
C. Integrating AI into her classroom. D. Teaching AI technology in her school.
9. What is the author’s attitude to the potential of AI in education?
A. Worried. B. Indifferent. C. Doubtful. D. Positive.
10. What does the author suggest teachers do about AI in education?
A. Focus on teaching students AI skills. B. Help students to accept AI technology.
C. Replace old teaching methods with AI. D. Remove AI literacy from other courses.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. AI Literacy: a Hope for Students B. AI in Education: Challenges and Hopes
C. AI Innovation: Lowering Educational Quality D. AI-driven Future: Taking Control of Students
D
Wild bird sex change may be more common than ornithologists (鸟类学者) once thought. A new study of around 500 birds from five species found that up to 6% had the physical features of one sex but the genetic makeup of the other. These birds came from various habitats, making the finding more notable as it wasn’t limited to a single environment.
There is one striking example: A genetically male bird called kookaburra showed signs of having recently laid an egg, as scientists concluded from its body. Dominique Potvin, an Australian ornithologist and co-author of the study, explained, “This shows sex determination in wild birds is more flexible than we once thought — and can last into adulthood.” Unlike the case in fish, where sex change is well-documented, it’s rarely seen in wild birds.
The study analyzed dead birds of five species that had previously been treated for injury or illnesses at wildlife hospitals, examining their reproductive organs and testing their DNA. Most sex-changed birds were genetically female but had male reproductive organs. There were also mixed cases: The male kookaburra had clear signs confirming recent egg production, which surprised the research team.
Sex-changed birds can affect bird populations. As study co-author Clancy Hall noted, they may reduce reproduction or even harm threatened species. They also challenge traditional ways of identifying bird sex — methods like DNA tests or behavior could be wrong up to 6% of the time, which matters for many research fields, including conservation efforts.
The cause of bird sex change is unclear, but environmental factors are likely involved. The egg-laying kookaburra, for example, was found in an area where certain chemicals may accumulate, indicating a possible link. Over time, these substances might collect in the environment, offering a clue about their potential impact. Though the cause remains unknown, the study provides a baseline for understanding sex change in Australian birds. Better data on its role in populations could aid conservation, especially for at-risk species. “Understanding how and why it occurs is vital for conservation and improving bird research accuracy,” Potvin said.
12. How does the author develop paragraph 1?
A. By providing data. B. By giving examples.
C. By analyzing causes. D. By drawing comparisons.
13. What does Potvin’s explanation in paragraph 2 suggest?
A. Bird sex changes are as unusual as fish.
B. Bird sex determination often ends in youth.
C. Adult birds’ sex is completely fixed by genes.
D. Previous studies have overlooked bird sex flexibility.
14. What will sex change in birds contribute to?
A. Identifying birds’ illnesses. B. Lowering bird reproduction rates.
C. Reducing species threatening birds. D. Aiding conservation of threatened bird species.
15. What does the underlined word “accumulate” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Light up. B. Build up. C. Burn out. D. Run out.

My Little Farm Project
My love for planting started with a school project. We were tasked with growing a plant at home. I chose garlic (大蒜) because it seemed easy. I found a head of garlic in the kitchen, and my mom showed me how to separate it. I planted a few of the small sections in a pot and placed it by the window where it could get plenty of sunlight. Watering it daily became my new routine. One day, to my surprise, green shoots appeared! Watching them grow, I felt a sense of excitement. When I finally harvested a perfect bulb of garlic, I was incredibly proud. That small success “planted” a big idea in my mind. “Since we live on a farm, why not grow more for family food?” I thought.
I first talked about my idea to my dad, who was busy on the farm. He thought for a moment and then pointed to a sunny spot. “You can use that area,” he said. “But it’s hard work.” My mom was supportive too. The next day, she drove me to the local garden store. We bought packets of carrot seeds. As we left, she picked up a few discarded (丢弃的) garlic sections on the ground. “No waste on a farm!” she said. I also told my best friend, Leo, about my plan. Since his family had a small garden, he offered to help me that weekend. When Leo arrived, we saw my mom casually throw those garlic pieces onto the freshly turned soil of our new garden bed.
We started by clearing the plot of weeds and rocks. The sun was hot, and the work was tough. Seeing us struggling, my dad brought over a machine to loosen the soil. My mom brought us cool drinks. With their help, we soon had a neat garden bed. We carefully planted the seeds in straight rows, just like the instructions on the packets said. I watered the soil gently. Every day after that, I would check the plot, hoping for the first sign of life.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Under our care for weeks, tiny green shoots finally pushed through the soil.

C 5. A 6. D 7. B

I’m hopeful that this could be a turning point where teaching and learning are greatly changed as education has changed little since it began.
C 9. D 10. B 11. B

A By providing data.
A Light up. B. Build up. C. Burn out. D. Run out.
A 13. D 14. B 15. B

根据最后一段中的“The cause of bird sex change is unclear, but environmental factors are likely involved. The egg-laying kookaburra, for example, was found in an area where certain chemicals may accumulate, indicating a possible link. Over time, these substances might collect in the environment, offering a clue about their potential impact.( 鸟类性别转变的原因尚不清楚,但环境因素可能与此有关。

此处为It is reported that... 故填that。
故填the。

故填have had。

The harvest day was the most rewarding experience.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Under our care for weeks, tiny green shoots finally pushed through the soil. To our surprise, the discarded garlic sections sprouted first, their slender green leaves standing straight. Leo and I cheered! Soon, the carrot seedlings emerged, delicate feathery greens contrasting with the sturdy garlic. My parents often checked our progress, offering advice when leaves looked pale or soil seemed dry. When we noticed tiny pests on some carrot leaves, my mom handed us a natural spray, reminding us to keep our farm chemical-free. Weeks passed, and the garlic grew tall while carrot tops spread bushy and bright green, promising hidden treasures beneath the soil.
The harvest day was the most rewarding experience. We gently loosened the soil around the carrots. Pulling up the first plump, orange root felt like uncovering gold! The garlic bulbs, once discarded scraps, were now firm and fragrant. Mom smiled, “No waste indeed!” That evening, dinner featured our carrots roasted with herbs and garlic bread made from our bulbs. Our little farm project not only fed us but taught me patience, teamwork, and the joy of nurturing life from seed to table.
