Power of Public Speaking has partnered with ASI Innovation Labs to integrate artificial intelligence into the Pops Classroom platform for improving public speaking skills. The first project is the Pops Advisor which provides an automatic evaluation of students’ video presentations with visual feedback.
The Advisor offers on-demand comments to students practicing public speaking from anywhere. This flexibility benefits instructors who can be as hands-on or hands-off during practice. While students can operate autonomously with the tool, instructors can also choose to keep track of students’ progress.
Criteria
Using machine learning models, the Pops Advisor analyzes the following criteria:
Delivery
Introduction
Body
Conclusion
Vocal Style
Vocal Quality
Vocal Filler
Eye Contact
Body Language
Credibility
Attention
Central Idea
Preview
Connective
Support
Language
Connective
Credibility

Feedback
The presenter receives feedback on the above four categories. And this feedback is given in the following formats:
• Recommendations
To provide presenters with valuable feedback for the next practice, recommendations focus on specific aspects needing improvement. For instance, the recommendation can be “Your message is clear, but be sure you are grabbing your audience’s attention in your introduction to ensure they are listening.”
• Speech Metrics (指标)
Useful speech metrics serve as quantitative descriptors on several aspects of the presentation including number of words, total presentation time, speaking rate and vocal fillers percentage.
Pops Advisor can be used in any classroom setting where students are presenting, particularly in the Basic Public Speaking Course. When you are considering what can be achieved by your students toward skill development in a single school semester, Advisor increases the overall development.
21. What is the Pops Advisor?
A. A voice assistant. B. A video player. C. A time tracker. D. An evaluation tool.
22 Which of the following categories provides feedback on facial expressions?
A. Delivery. B. Introduction. C. Body. D. Conclusion.

When people ask me now why I’m not an Instagram user, I usually give a general response like, “I’m not really a social media person.” But the true reasons are more complicated.
For a while, I quite liked this. I didn’t have to bother cultivating a perfect profile, and could enjoy a sense of moral superiority believing I didn’t buy into the same image-driven society as other teenagers. It’s true that I appeared to care less about popularity than some of my peers — if only because I’d always been on the outside loop. Admittedly, this may also be a reflection of my fixation on something else at school: studying. My satisfaction did not come from social media likes, but from teacher reports and test papers.
Yet, over time, I have also felt the negative effects of my lack of social media presence. At school, as at university, it partly contributed to my status as a wallflower. Above all, it was isolating. Aside from a small circle of friends (fortunately, extremely good ones), I felt that people generally did not know me, or even know of me, and I didn’t know them. Would Instagram have helped me make friends more easily?
Overall, I have a contradictory attitude towards my own lack of Instagram. In some ways, I feel that it has genuinely bettered my outlook on life, enabling me to resist constant comparison with others, but, at times, I have also felt it to be an unnecessary self-imposed social exclusion. The latter may reveal how deep-rooted social media has become in our times.
For better or for worse, I did take a different route. I never created a social media presence. I never posted photos. I never watched how many likes they got. Whichever path I might have gone down, there are positives and negatives to both. But this is the choice I took. And that has made all the difference.
24. What does the underlined word “wallflower” represent in Paragraph 3?
A. An outsider. B. An outgoing person.
C. A garden plant in spring. D. A flower growing on the wall.
25. Which may be the negative effect of using Instagram?
A. Making one isolated. B. Causing mental diseases.
C. Cultivating dependent personality. D. Causing constant comparisons with others.
26. Which may the author agree with?
A. Instagram is a must in social media age.
B. Social media play a vital role in our times.
C. Lack of social media makes people insecure.
D. Instagram improves mental and physical health.
27. Which can best describe the author?
A. Independent-minded. B. Old-fashioned.
C. Outgoing. D. Over-confident.

Do you know which letter was the last one to be added to the English alphabet? Or what is the name of the galaxy that our planet Earth is part of? In 2009, Colin Camerer and his colleagues were among the first ones to study how our brains respond to trivia (琐事) questions like these, because they wanted to see what happens in our brains when we feel curious.
To do this, they ran a brain imaging study that allowed researchers to see which brain regions are activated as people engage in mental activities like seeing, thinking, selecting, and so on.
They found that for questions about which participants had reported high curiosity, parts of the brain typically associated with reward lit up. These areas usually light up when we are expecting that something good or rewarding is about to happen. Imagine how you feel just before watching a concert or a movie you’ve been eager to see.
Next came the Reveal. When participants finally got the answers to the questions, the parts of their brains that are typically associated with memory and learning became active. Even more telling was that these areas were more strongly activated when the initial guess was incorrect than when it was correct.
Simply put, what these findings suggest is that curiosity sets up an anticipation of a reward (for the correct answer), and once we receive the reward (the correct answer), the brain acts to consolidate (巩固) our memory so that we learn the correct answer. This learning is stronger if we have initially failed rather than succeeded.
And such learning from failure is also stickier. Even after ten days, Camerer and colleagues found that participants could remember the correct answers to the questions they had initially guessed incorrectly, showing that failure can make us curious to learn the correct answer, and once we learn it, it sticks for longer as well.
28. Which aspect of the human brain does Colin Camerer’s study focus on?
A. Its response to curiosity. B. Its state during learning.
C. Its function development. D. Its development with age.
29. The brain’s reward system will be activated when ________.
A. the imagination goes wild B. people engage in leisure activities
C. anticipation levels increase D. people witness something good
30. According to the Reveal part, what may make our brains more eager to learn?
A. Incorrect choices. B. A better reward. C. An active atmosphere. D. Confusing questions.
31. Which of the following books is the text most likely selected from?
A. The Art from Trivia Questions B. Must-Have Abilities of Successful People
C. Unsolved Mysteries in the World D. The Secrets to Being a Super Learner
D
Thinking back on the college recommendations I’ve written, a pattern occurs: The most successful students are never merely great students. They are devoted to at least six other pursuits. How can a kid write such detailed reading journals on Dante, excel in painting and find the time to edit the school newspaper, volunteer at her city councilman’s office, run a half-marathon, take photography classes and write prize-winning poetry on the side?
“Our age respects the specialist,” writes Robert Twigger, “but humans are natural polymaths (博学者) .” It’s not just the youngsters who can join the polymath party.
The sumption that learning stops when you leave university is at odds with the evidence. It appears that a great deal depends on the nucleus basalis. This bit of the brain produces significant amounts of acetylcholine that regulates the rate at which new connections are made between brain cells. This in turn determines how readily we form memories of various kinds.
So what’s the trick to letting the acetylcholine flow more plentifully? Twigger again: People as old as 90 who actively acquire new interests retain their ability to learn. But if we stop taxing the nucleus basalis, it begins to dry up. In some older people it has been shown to contain no acetylcholine. But simply attempting new things seems to offer benefits to people. After only short periods of trying, the ability to make new connections develops.
Two years ago, I had some newfound headspace to write a piece for The New York Times. I had no idea if I’d be able to keep up the writing while being a dad and a teacher and a runner, but I thought I’d give it a try. And a few months later I started blogging for The Economist as well. Adding new activities to my plate seems to have given me a new source of energy, and sometimes when I’m worn out, I’m also, strangely, uplifted.
It undervalues our lives to willingly enter into mindless routines. Make stuff. Pursue a new interest. Consider career changes, even if you don’t actually make one. Stop this, start that. Do something new. Come on, it’s good for you.
32. What does the author find about the most successful students?
A. They are gifted in arts.
B. They are all-round athletes.
C. They have wide-ranging interests.
D. They make efforts to promote the public good.
33. What does the author intend to illustrate by quoting Twigger in paragraph 4?
A. How to enhance the brain’s capacity for learning.
B. Why humans are natural polymaths.
C. What is the key to a good memory.
D. What to do to age slowly.
34. How does the author describe writing in his spare time?
A. It makes him struggle to balance many roles.
B. It recharges his passion and enthusiasm.
C. It enables him to follow his daily routines.
D. It makes him question his career choices.
35. What does the author suggest readers do?
A. Find their true interest and specialize in it.
B. Prioritize academic achievement.
C. Break their comfort zones and enjoy new challenges.
D. Seek out groundbreaking and pioneering work.

I used to be a lonely girl sitting at the back of the classroom. Having failed the college entrance exams and changed schools twice, I seldom smiled. Every day I would sit at the desk, staring into textbooks and exercises, motionless and heavy-hearted. However, my classmates were in a different picture. They were playing, laughing and chatting delightedly. Besides, I hated it when they were always answering the teachers’ questions, loudly and confidently. Obviously, I had no friends in this fiercely competitive class.
Life is harder for senior students. Hardly does a day go by without exercises or tests. Every time when the scores came out mine wouldn’t be the first or second but last. I was especially tired of the endless exercises and exams, which I seemingly would never do well in. I was under a lot of pressure, feeling like a fish being fried in a pan.
Hanging over me was a dark cloud. The only dim light came from Mr. Smith. Every time I stepped into the classroom, he welcomed me with a warm smile; every time my gaze began to wander over the classroom or stare out of the window, his caring eyes would draw me back to his class. Besides, he was the only teacher who invited me to the office, talking about my studies and scores. I remembered when I came out of his office, I felt refreshed believing that I could work harder.
I was feeling everything was changing for the better. I prepared hard for the final exam of the first semester, desiring to prove that I was not the last one. So before Mr. Smith told us the test result, I was expecting something good in store for me.
But I was still the last one in the class. A burst of sadness and shame consuming me, I was heartbroken.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Right at that moment, Mr. Smith invited me to his office.

W: Hello. My name’s Jane Ryder. I’m calling from the U.K. — we’re hoping to find somewhere to rent in Fairfield, Canada.
M: Oh, may I have your email address? So we can send you the information.
W: I’ll give you my husband’s. It’s Richard@visiontech.co.uk.
M: And the occupation?
W: Richard works for an advertising company. He’ll be reassigned to their Fairfield branch, so my son and I are going with him. And I’m a doctor at a hospital.
M: What kind of accommodation are you looking for?
W: An apartment with two bedrooms. And we’ll be shipping all our furniture over, so we don’t need any. Before we come, we’ll be selling our fridge, so we’d like the apartment to have one.
M: How about location?
W: We’d like to be fairly close to a school.
M: Got it. Um, can I just ask how you heard about us? Obviously not from our TV commercials if you’re living in the U.K.
W: Actually, it was Max. We studied at the same university in America. He spent a few months in Fairfield last year and pointed us in the direction of your website.

If you dream of a newer and fitter you, starting this January, I have some bad news: 70% of health-related New Year’s resolutions are given up in the first week. By the end of the month, 90% of us have got the chocolate cake back in the cupboard and the pizzas in the freezer, while the new gym membership card is gathering dust. This may not seem a very inspiring start on motivation, but we need to learn what has gone wrong, so that this time we can do it differently, with the help of science. I guess most of us have started something with good intentions, only to fail at a later stage through shortage of something, such as energy or commitment. So, what’s the secret? Exercise devotion, which means making an organized program and keeping up with it, applies to everyone; from great athletes who need the extra drive that turns a natural talent into an Olympic gold, to the overweight who need to do something to protect themselves against heart disease and cancer. Somewhere in the middle of these extremes, struggling to get to the gym three times a week, is you. This involves setting realistic goals, scheduling workouts, tracking progress, and adjusting the program as needed. You can do it. All you need is a bit of moral support and some good old-fashioned determination.

A 25. D 26. B 27. A
根据第三段中“At school, as at university, it partly contributed to my status as a wallflower. Above all, it was isolating. Aside from a small circle of friends (fortunately, extremely good ones), I felt that people generally did not know me, or even know of me, and I didn’t know them.(在中学,就像在大学一样,这在一定程度上促成了我作为wallflower的地位。最重要的是,这是一种孤立。除了一小群朋友(幸运的是,非常好的朋友),我觉得人们一般都不认识我,甚至不知道我,我也不认识他们)”可知,作者因没有使用Instagram等社交媒体,在学校处于一种孤立的状态,人们不了解他,他也不了解别人。由此可推知,“wallflower”在这里指的是像局外人一样的人。故选A项。
根据第四段中“In some ways, I feel that it has genuinely bettered my outlook on life, enabling me to resist constant comparison with others(在某些方面,我觉得它确实改善了我的人生观,使我能够抵制不断与他人比较)”可知,作者认为没有使用Instagram等社交媒体使自己能够抵制与他人不断的比较,由此可推断使用Instagram可能会导致与他人不断比较。
通读全文以及最后一段“For better or for worse, I did take a different route. I never created a social media presence. I never posted photos. I never watched how many likes they got. Whichever path I might have gone down, there are positives and negatives to both. But this is the choice I took. And that has made all the difference.(不管是好是坏,我确实选择了一条不同的路线。我从来没有创建过社交媒体。我从来没有发过照片。我从来没看过有多少人点赞。无论我走哪条路,都有积极和消极的一面。但这是我的选择。这让一切都不同了)”可知,作者能够在大家普遍使用社交媒体的时代,根据自己的思考和感受,坚持不使用Instagram,有自己独立的判断和想法,所以“Independent-minded(有独立思想的)”能最好地描述作者。故选A项。
C
【答案】28 A 29. C 30. A 31. D

故选A。
根据文章第三段“They found that for questions about which participants had reported high curiosity, parts of the brain typically associated with reward lit up. These areas usually light up when we are expecting that something good or rewarding is about to happen. Imagine how you feel just before watching a concert or a movie you’ve been eager to see. (他们发现,对于那些参与者表示极感兴趣的问题,大脑中通常与奖励相关的部分会变得活跃。这些区域在我们期待好事或有回报的事情即将发生时,往往会呈现出活跃状态。想象一下,在即将观看一场你期盼已久的音乐会或电影前,你的那种感受。)”可知,大脑的奖励系统在人们产生期待时会被激活。故选C。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Even more telling was that these areas were more strongly activated when the initial guess was incorrect than when it was correct. (更能说明问题的是,当初始猜测错误时,这些区域的活跃程度要比初始猜测正确时高得多。)”可知,在答案揭晓阶段,初始选择错误会让大脑中与学习相关的区域更活跃,即错误的选择可能使我们的大脑更渴望学习。故选A。
D“The Secrets to Being a Super Learner (超级学习者的秘诀)”与此相符,因此文章最可能选自《超级学习者的秘诀》。故选D。
C 33. A 34. B 35. C

根据文章第四段“So what’s the trick to letting the acetylcholine flow more plentifully? Twigger again: People as old as 90 who actively acquire new interests retain their ability to learn. But if we stop taxing the nucleus basalis, it begins to dry up. In some older people it has been shown to contain no acetylcholine. But simply attempting new things seems to offer benefits to people. After only short periods of trying, the ability to make new connections develops.(那么,让乙酰胆碱更充沛地分泌有什么诀窍呢? 故选A。
根据文章第五段“And a few months later I started blogging for The Economist as well. Adding new activities to my plate seems to have given me a new source of energy, and sometimes when I’m worn out, I’m also, strangely, uplifted.(几个月后,我又开始为《经济学人》写博客。在日常事务中增加新的活动,似乎给了我新的能量来源。有时,当我疲惫不堪时,却也奇怪地感到精神振奋。)”可知,作者在业余时间写作为他带来了新的能量,甚至在疲惫时能让他感到振奋,即重新激发了他的热情与活力。故选B。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“It undervalues our lives to willingly enter into mindless routines. Make stuff. Pursue a new interest. Consider career changes, even if you don’t actually make one. Stop this, start that. Do something new. Come on, it’s good for you.(心甘情愿地陷入毫无意义的常规生活,是对我们生命的贬低。去创造东西吧。去追求新的兴趣吧。考虑一下职业变动,即便你实际上并不会真的变动。停下这件事,开始那件事。做点新的尝试。来吧,这对你有好处。)”可知,作者建议读者打破一成不变的舒适区,尝试新事物、迎接新挑战。故选C。

【答案】
Technology has greatly changed our lives in many ways. It has improved communication, advanced healthcare, and enhanced education. With the help of technology, people can connect instantly, doctors can perform complex surgeries, and students can access knowledge more easily.
However, technology also brings problems. Overuse of smartphones and computers can lead to reduced face-to-face interaction. Privacy concerns have also become more serious with the rise of social media. Additionally, some people may become overly dependent on technology, affecting their creativity and critical thinking skills.
In my opinion, technology is a double-edged sword. While it provides countless benefits, we must use it wisely and responsibly. Only by finding a balance can we truly enjoy the advantages of technological advancements.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Right at that moment, Mr. Smith invited me to his office.

Right at that moment, Mr. Smith invited me to his office. Hesitantly, I walked into the office. Mr. Smith greeted me with a smile. As he began talking, not about my grades or mistakes, but about my potential and perseverance, it became apparent that this talk was totally a different one. He didn’t blame me. Instead, he praised my resilience and determination. He encouraged me to embrace my struggles, reminding me that success was never a straight path. In his eyes, I could see his belief in me, and I knew I should never quit.
Finally, the college admission letter came. I held it in my shaking hands, doubting whether I was in a world of fantasy. But as I opened the envelope, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Despite all the odds, I got admitted! I stared at the letter in disbelief for a long time. It felt like the dawn after a seemingly endless night, a reward for the perseverance I didn’t know I had until Mr. Smith showed me. Tears welling up in my eyes. Mr. Smith might never know how much his encouragement might mean to me in my toughest time.
