The first time I went to Germany with my boyfriend,I was very young and
hadn't been to many places. As soon as we arrived,I had this incredible revelation."I
know all about this area! The food, the language.I know all about the Schwarzwald.
the Black Forest,"I said to his German family."How do you know about this?"they
asked,in disbelief.
That was the first time it dawned on me how much I knew about the rest of the
world, and how prepared I was for it,just from growing up in New York City-that
I had been everywhere before I'd ever actually gone anywhere.
I grew ap in the Chelsea Projects,288 10th Avenue at 26th Street.A lot of kids
there were first-generation Americans with immigrant parents who were still
speaking Yiddish or Chinese or Portuguese,or just name a language, and they were
speaking it.You ate every imaginable food from the rest of the world there. You were
exposed to all different kinds of traditions.
It wasn't just that.The whole city was a classroom.All over town,you learned
stuff you didn't even know you were learning. You didn't have to be rich to learn it,
either. My mom was a teacher-a great Head Start teacher-and she made sure I
partook of everything New York had to offer people who didn't have any money,
because she knew it was the greatest education in the world.
We went to all the museums, which were free back then. We'd ride the bus to
Lincoln Center, before it was Lincoln Center, and watch dancers dancing there.Or
we'd take the train to Coney Island. Those trips are among my fondest memories.
New York City played a big part in making me who I am.It's where I learned
that I could pursue whatever I loved,but that I couldn't be a slacker(偷懒的人).The
city is everything you've heard it is.It's crazy,it's horrible,it's magnificent,it's
beautiful.It's a real live wire,hard to leave.

When people trust science, they can make better decisions and work together on
big problems like climate change. But if people stop trusting science,it's easier for
faise information to spread and harder to selve these problems.
One way scientists are trying to build more trust is by being more open about
themselves and their work. The idea of "open science"means sharing data,
experimental methods and even unsuccessful results.Scientists are also being asked
to reveal if they have any financial interests that might affect their work.
However,as a philosopher of science and public policy,I argue that some forms
of openness can actually reduce trust.Scientists aren't perfect because they are
human beings. However, even when mostly correct, they can lose public trust due to
mistakes. For example,in 2009,the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East
Anglia in England was hacked, which led to the leak of thousands of climate
scientists'emails. This caused public concern over a cover-up of data that go against
global warming.Numerous investigations found no misconduct and the scientists
were doing normal research. However, the lack of context in the leaked data gave
rise to conspiracy theories.
Some also believe that good scientists never have conflicts of interest and that
scientists who do are in the wrong. So you could argue that it's OK for scientists to
hide conflicts of interest to keep public trust. This is called a"noble lie".However,
高二英语试卷第5页(共11页)
lying only works if no one finds out,and history shows that the truth usually comes
out in the end.The idea of a noble lie is what I call a fake solution. It doesn't really
fix the problem. It just shows that people don't understand enough about how science
and scientists work.
Scientists aren't completely fair or neutral.Everyone has some level of personal
opinion or outside pressure, which may affect their work. And science doesn't prove
things for sure.It makes the best guesses based on facts and data.
Scientists know that they aren't perfect, and neither is the practice of science.
But they haven't done a great job of explaining that to the public. If we want people
to trust science as much as it should be trusted,we need to help them really
understand how it works.
How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A.By defining a complex idea
B.By challenging an assumption
C.By comparing two viewpoints
D.B presenting a real-life example
29.What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning the 2009 case?
A.Climate change is often exaggerated.
B.Research should be better protected.
C.Partial openness can damage trust.
D.Media reports can shape public opinion.
30.How does the author view the"noble lie"?
A.As risky yet unaveidable
B.As a moral but delicate act
C.As wise but rarely successful
D.As wrong in principle and effect
31.What is the author's advice for scientists?
A.Balance truth with public image B.Keep their personal views private
C.Provide solid evidence for each claim D.Admit the limits of science clearly

This year is the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology,
marking 100 years since the initial development of quantum mechanics(量子力学).
On Oct 7,the Nobel Prize in Physics went to three scientists for showing that the
special properties of the quantum world can be made concrete in a system big
enough to be held in your hand.
Quantum mechanics might seem abstract. It describes properties that are
significant at the level of single particles, known as microscopic phenomena
象).Still,,macroscopic phenomena(宏观现象)involve lots of particles..For
example,a regular ball is made up of lots of particles and doesn't show quantum
effects. But a single particle might sometimes pass through a barrier in its
高二英语试卷第6页(共11页)
microscopic world and appear on the other side. This is a quantum mechanical
phenomenon called tunneling.
This year's winners-John Clarke from the UK,Michel H.Devoret,and John
Martinis-showed that quantum tunneling can also occur on a macroscopic scale
involving many particles.
Scientists built an electrical circuit (using two superconductors, which
carry current without resistance. They placed a thin non-conductive layer between
them and used a chip about a centimeter in size to hold the circuit. With billions of
electrons filling the superconductor on the chip, the experiment showed the effects of
quantum mechanics on a macroscopic scale.
Initially, the experiment had no voltage, like a switch stuck in the off position.
Suddenly,a voltage appeareal as if the switch was moved from off to on,despite the
barrier. What happened in the experiment was macroscopic quantum tunneling. The
scientists also showed that the system was quantized, meaning it only absorbed or
emitted energy in specific amounts.
The Nobel Committee for Physics said this research has laid the groundwork for
the next generation of quantum technologies, including quantum cryptography,
quantum computers, and quantum sensors.Eva Olsson,a member of the committee,
also described the discovery as opening "a door to another world",encouraging
people to study quantum mechanics on a larger scale.
32.What did this year's Nobel Prize winners achieve?
A.They enlarged quantum effects to a visible scale
B.They discovered new microscopic particles
C.They proposed a new rule of quantum motion.
D.They created a groundbreaking quantum device.
Why does the author mention the example of the ball?
A.To show how motion follows physical laws
B.To illustrate energy transfer during impact'
C.To contrast ciassical and quantum behavior
D.To show the difficulty of observing tunneling
What do we know about the experiment?
A.It visualized tunneling across metal barriers.
B.It tracked quantum shifts through resistance.
C.It linked voltage change to tunneling effects.
D.It used energy absorption to break barriers.
35.What's the significance of the research, according to the Nobel Committee for
Pnysics?
A.It explains the origins of particle motion
高二英语试卷第7页(共11页)
B.It challenges traditional physics concepts
C.It inspires interest in microscopic physics
D.It bridges quantum theory and practical use

How to make tasks feel lighter
Recently,I wrote about how to speed up your tasks.36When you do
this, you're less likely to avoid it.You finish faster and with less stress.Since that
idea struck a chord with many readers, here are four more tools to help make tasks
feel lighter.
See it as standalone
A two-hour task can feel heavy if it's part of a month-long project.7
Once you finish, you're done.Try breaking away from the bigger project in your
mind and focus only on the piece in front of you.
Lower the stakes
3For.bxample,writing one email might feel like your only chance to build
a friendsnmp or get a reply.Instead, imagine the task has fewer consequences.Remind
yourself that one result won't define the whole outcome. It's only one piece of the
picture
Sometimes a task feels heavy because you put too much of yourself into it.Try
to treat it like a simple exchange.Show up,do what's required, collect the reward and
move on.Not every task needs your full identity or passion.
Bring your "average self"
Not every task needs your very best.Sometimes just completing it is enough to
impress others.Even your "regular self"can do a good job.40
A.Treat it like business,not personal
B Approach the task with a relaxed attitude
C.Break the task into as many uny steps as possible
D.Remind yourself that finishing is already an achievement
E.One key point was reducing the emotional weight of the task
F.But if you picture it as a single.idependent task,it feels much simpler
G.We often add pressure by imagining that one task will decide everything
