So, big companies hire lower-income countries to do these jobs, often places where English is not the first language. One such country that offers cheap labor is Nigeria, and in Nigerian English, “delve” is a common word in professional settings. So, when Nigerian testers tell AI which responses sound natural, their own language preferences come through. As AI-generated information becomes more common, will it also affect the way we speak to each other? In some ways, AI has already left its mark. It has been argued that natural selection keeps some species unchanged by selecting for moderate (中等) qualities (stabilizing selection) rather than selecting for more extreme qualities that would cause a species to change (directional selection). But a study published in the National Academy of Sciences USA goes against this idea, showing that evolution constantly favors different qualities in seemingly unchanging animals to improve short-term survival. In the long term, though, “all that evolution cancels out and leads to no change”, says James Stroud, the study’s lead writer. Stroud and his teammates studied four types of lizard (蜥蜴), all relatively unchanged for 20 million years. The researchers caught members of these populations in the wild every six months for three years. They measured each lizard’s head size, leg length, weight and height, as well as the size of its sticky toes, noting which individuals survived. Stroud expected to observe stabilizing selection at work protecting moderate qualities. Instead he saw clearer evidence of directional selection; some lizards with unique characteristics, such as stickier toes, survived better. The study offers “a good explanation for why we see what we think is stabilizing selection”, says Tadashi Fukami, a scientist studying evolution at Stanford University.
