When I became a junior, I decided to take Latin (拉丁文) at school. I was so excited and really expected to learn it well.
However, the Latin class turned out to be quite boring. Each day, Mr Keady, the teacher, would ask us to open our books and read aloud the Latin forms of words. This was the way he taught us every day. That was until one afternoon when, once again, we were asked to open our books, and I decided to speak up.
When Mr Keady asked what was wrong, I explained why I found his class boring, how I had expected more, and that his teaching method seemed old-fashioned. When I finished speaking, I expected Mr Keady to angrily send me to the head teacher.
To my surprise, he sat at his desk quietly, looking disappointed and tired. After a moment of silence, Mr Keady spoke. He quietly said that he would think carefully about what I had said. And that was it.
In the following weeks, the Latin class didn’t become the exciting learning environment I had hoped for, but Mr Keady did try harder to interest us in his classes.
Maybe some people would praise what I did, but even so many years later, I feel bad about it. If I saw him now, I would tell him how much I regretted what I’d done that day in class. I would also tell him that he taught me a wonderful lesson that day. Following my unkind words, Mr Keady showed me that being wounded doesn’t mean you have to give away your dignity (尊严), and that no one—no one—can take it away from you.
39. How did the Latin class turn out for the writer?
A. Exciting. B. Boring. C. Challenging. D. Fashionable.

A. Disappointed at the changes. B. Happy to get praised.
C. Wounded by the teacher. D. Regretful about what was said.
42. What lesson did the writer learn from the experience?
A. One can always hold onto their dignity. B. Unkind words can sometimes work.

In a recent game of pickleball, my teammate and I were falling far behind our opponents (对手). It was her turn to serve. We were both standing behind the baseline, when she nodded at me and said, “In it to win it.”
“Really?” I looked at her, surprised by her use of a catchy expression that was new to me. Personally, I refused even the tiniest suggestion that we should be trying to win the game.
In my life, I enjoy yoga, folk dancing—anything but games with winners and losers, and I always prefer to be a spectator rather than a player in the world of sports.
Then pickleball came along. Suddenly, I didn’t want to be an observer any more. I wanted to be a player myself.
My love for the game is that it’s easy to get started with. The gear (装备) isn’t too expensive. It’s an easy game to learn, and the player doesn’t need to be especially strong, tall or fast. Little wonder that everyone can now be seen throwing a green, orange or yellow plastic ball with holes in it across a net.
Pickleball is the first game I’ve wanted to win. I think it’s because of the excitement I feel when I score a point. Joining in a sport myself rather than cheering for others provides real proof that I can still work hard to achieve goals.
So, I’ve made a decision to continue it. I’d forgotten how fun it is to socialize while doing something active. In that playful space of the court, I face my fears of winning and losing. Now I wonder what contests I might be brave enough to enter next.
43. What did the writer’s teammate mean by saying “In it to win it”?
A. Making up her mind to beat opponents. B. Encouraging the writer to try harder.
C. Just telling a joke to relax the writer. D. Hoping to make the game more exciting.
44. Which of the following may be a picture of a pickleball?
A B. C. D.
45. Why did the writer write the text?
A. To introduce the recently popular game pickleball.
B. To tell pickleball is a good game for friends.
C. To advise us to take part in as many sports as possible.
D. To encourage us to face winning and losing bravely.

“You are just like your mother.” This phrase is often said by many. As we grow older, we may notice that we’re getting more like our mother. Yet surprisingly, new research has found that most people are more similar to their father.
A team of scientists from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in the US found that we inherit (继承) equal amounts of genes from mother and father. But we use more of the DNA we inherit from our father.
The study helps us to partly explain who we are. And more importantly, it helps us to find out whether we are likely to develop diseases. For example, if we inherit the gene for a disease from our mother, it may not be as strong as if we had inherited it from our father.
We know that there are 95 genes affected by our parents, said lead researcher Professor Fernando Pardo-Manuel de Villena. These are called imprinted genes. But now, the study has found that there are thousands of other genes that have come from our parents.
For the study, the scientists selected three different species of mice with different genes. The mice gave birth to nine babies each. When they all reached adulthood, the team then measured every single gene of their DNA.
They found an imbalance that swung toward their father. Villena also said that the recent study was the first to show that mammals (哺乳动物) are more similar to their fathers than mothers. “This is an exceptional new research finding that opens the door to an entirely new area of exploration in human genetics,” he said.
46. What is the new finding?
A. We are born to look more like our father.
B. We are more like our mother when we grow up.
C. We use more of the DNA we inherit from our father.
D. We have equal chances to be more like our mother or father.
47. What can we learn about the new finding from paragraph 3?
A. We are supposed to be stronger than our parents.
B. We don’t inherit the gene of a disease from our mother.
C. We inherit exactly the same diseases from parents.
D. It helps us predict possible diseases.
48. What does the underlined word “exceptional” in Paragraph 6 mean?
A. Unusual and excellent. B. Predictable and common.
C. Unfair and clever. D. Hopeless and simple.
49. Where is the text probably taken from?

What was the Word of the Year in 2024 for you? Collins Dictionary, Cambridge Dictionary, and Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary listed their Word of the Year reflecting what people cared about the most in 2024. The words were AI, hallucinate (产生幻觉), and authentic (真实的). The three words are different but have the same focus: the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI).
Collins Dictionary named “AI” as its Word of the Year, explaining it as “the modeling (建模) of human mental functions by computer programs”. In 2024, the development of AI was fast, as OpenAI improved the model for ChatGPT, making it even smarter. It has become an important helper for many people, including students and scientists.
However, the technology also leads to risks, with more and more fake (虚假的) information being made without knowledge. That’s why the Cambridge Dictionary chose “hallucinate” as its 2024 Word of the year.
Generative AI tools can create believable yet fake information. We call this an AI hallucination. Wendalyn Nichols from the Cambridge Dictionary stressed the importance of human thinking when using AI tools. AI tools have become so good at processing information, but they may create fake information as people ask more from them. Thus, it leads to the problem of authenticity.
Peter Sokolowski, from Merriam-Webster, told AP that the past year marked a “crisis (危机) of authenticity.” From Taylor Swift to Elon Musk, many famous people have called for authenticity in words and actions in public. Sokolowski added, “Can we trust whether a student wrote this paper? Can we trust whether a politician made this statement? We do not always trust what we see anymore.”
Looking forward, we need more rules on AI to address the problem of AI hallucinations and the “crisis of authenticity.”
50. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. AI. B. Collins Dictionary. C. The year. D. The word.
51. Why did Cambridge Dictionary choose “hallucinate” as its Word of the Year?
A. Because hallucination has become a common mental health issue.
B. Because AI tools can create realistic but fake information.
C. Because people were fascinated by AI-generated art.
D. Because AI tools could cure mental illnesses.
52. What’s the best title for the text?
A. AI Hallucinations B. AI technology in 2024
C. Dictionary Words of 2024 D. Some Rules on AI
【答案】50. A 51. B 52. C

【51题详解】
细节理解题。根据“Generative AI tools can create believable yet fake information. We call this an AI hallucination.”可知,AI工具会生成看似真实的虚假信息,这是该词被选中的原因。故选B。
【52题详解】

40. What did Keady do after the writer talked to him?
A. He got angry and told the head teacher. B. He said nothing until the class ended.
C. He looked sad and thought about it. D. He promised to improve his teaching.
41. How does the writer feel about the event now?
A. Disappointed at the changes. B. Happy to get praised.
C. Wounded by the teacher. D. Regretful about what was said.
42. What lesson did the writer learn from the experience?
A. One can always hold onto their dignity. B. Unkind words can sometimes work.
C. Honest communication is important. D. Don’t try to teach teachers lessons.

Collins Dictionary named “AI” as its Word of the Year explaining it as “the modeling (建模) of human mental functions by computer programs”.
