Joyce Loaiza lives alone, but when returning to her apartment at a senior community, she often has a chat with a friendly female voice. The 81-year-old is among the first in the United States to receive the robot ElliQ made by Intuition Robotics, which has been the only device using artificial intelligence specifically designed to address loneliness of the old.
Looking like a small table light, the device has an eyeless, mouthless head. It remembers each user’s interests and their talks, helping create a special experience with each new discussion, which can be as deep as the meaning of life or as light as a small joke. “She’ll make comments like, ‘I would go outside if I had hands, but I can’t hold an umbrella,’” said Loaiza. ElliQ also plays music and provides spiritual sayings. It leads exercises, asks about the owner’s health, and gives reminders to take medicines and drink water. It can also support video calls and contact family, friends, or doctors in an emergency.
The average user interacts with ElliQ more than 30 times a day and more than 90 percent report lower levels of loneliness, Intuition Robotics CEO Dor Skuler said.
Brigham Young University professor Julianne Holt-Lunstad, who studies the effects of loneliness on health, worries that a device like ElliQ might have short-term helpful effects but it could make people less likely to seek human contact. She noted that the difficult feeling of loneliness should push people to reconnect socially.
Skuler and state officials agreed that ElliQ is not an alternative to human contact. But some older people cannot leave home or do not have many friends. Charlotte Taylor, director of an Area Agency on Aging, said the worldwide pandemic a few years back left many older people more disconnected. Her agency has provided 300 ElliQs which, she believes, help the situation. She said, “People generally like her and she makes them smile.”
4. What does Loaiza’s comments on ElliQ imply?
A. It sometimes fails to be of any help.
B. Some of its comments make no sense.
C. It is humorous and has the human touch.
D. It shows an interest in the outside world.
5. What concerns Holt-Lunstad about ElliQ?
A Its inefficiency to ease loneliness.
B. Its failure to push people to reconnect.
C. Its replacement for human interactions.
D. Its potential for being addictive.
6. How does Taylor find ElliQ?
A. Novel. B. Popular. C. Advanced. D. Satisfying.
7. What’s the main purpose of the passage?
A. To offer some advice on removing loneliness.
B. To show us how to operate a new device.
C. To call for more care for the old.
D. To introduce a special AI device.

Yang Chen-Ning, one of the greatest physicists of the 20th century and China’s first Nobel laureate in science, passed away in Beijing at the age of 103, according to Tsinghua University. The university described the late scholar as “immortal” in its obituary.
Born in Hefei, Anhui province, in 1922, Yang moved with his family to Tsinghua University in 1929. He studied at the National Southwestern Associated University and later earned a master’s degree in science from Tsinghua in 1944. In 1945, he traveled to the United States as a government-sponsored student, completing his PhD at the University of Chicago in 1948.
Yang joined the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton in 1949, became a professor in 1955, and in 1966 was appointed the Albert Einstein Professor of Physics at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where he worked until 1999. In 1957, Yang and his collaborator Tsung-Dao Lee won the Nobel Prize in Physics for their groundbreaking discovery of parity non-conservation in weak interactions (弱相互作用中的宇称不守恒) — an idea that revolutionized modern physics. His later work with Robert Mills on the Yang-Mills theory became one of the theoretical pillars of the Standard Model of particle physics, comparable in influence to Maxwell’s equations and Einstein’s relativity.
Returning to China in his later years, Yang became an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, honorary president of the Institute for Advanced Study at Tsinghua, and professor at Tsinghua University. He worked tirelessly to advance basic research and nurture young scientific talent.
Beyond his scientific legacy, Yang was a devoted bridge-builder between China and the world. His visit to the People’s Republic of China in 1971 helped open academic exchanges between Chinese and overseas scientists. He later raised funds to support nearly a hundred Chinese scholars in pursuing studies abroad, many of whom became key figures in China’s scientific progress.
“Professor Yang’s life was that of an immortal legend,” Tsinghua wrote. “His century-long journey will forever shine among the stars of human civilization.”
8 What does Paragraph 3 mainly focus on?
A. The explanation for why Yang returned to China.
B. The description of how Yang won the Nobel Prize.
C. The summary of Yang’s contributions to modern chemistry.
D. The outline of Yang’s academic journey in the United States.
9. What can be inferred from Yang’s collaboration with Tsung-Dao Lee?
A. It reshaped scientists’ understanding of natural laws.
B. It demonstrated the power of cross-cultural cooperation.
C It marked China’s first major step into modern physics.
D. It showed that teamwork often leads to friendship.
10 What can we learn from Paragraph 5 about Yang Chen-Ning?
A. He played a significant role in promoting international academic exchanges.
B. He donated his personal savings to establish scholarships for Chinese students.
C. He made groundbreaking contributions to the field of particle physics.
D. All of the scholars he supported became leading figures in their scientific fields.
11. Which of the following best describes Yang Chen-Ning?
A. Brilliant and influential. B. Determined and patriotic.
C. Devoted and humble. D. Generous and humorous.
D
Naquela Wright’s life took an unexpected turn when she lost her eyesight as a teenager, but even when her world became dark, the New Jersey resident didn’t want to quit social media.
Using Facebook was a challenge at first. Diagnosed in 2010 with pseudotumor cerebri, a rare health condition in which pressure increases around the brain and can result in the loss of vision, Wright learned how to use a screen reader to read the site through the touch of the keyboard and sound of a robotic voice. Still, when a friend sends her a photo, Wright often has no clue what the image shows.
Now Facebook is trying to solve this problem by exploiting the power of artificial intelligence to create new tools that not only describe items in a photo but allows users to ask what’s in an image.
“I can have a basic picture in my mind of what’s going on in the picture and now I can comment on my own,” said Wright, who got to try out the new tools that are still being tested. “Of course, it’s different, but it’s something more than I had.”
An estimated 285 million people are visually disabled globally, according to the World Health Organization, and research conducted by Facebook showed that blind users have trouble figuring out what’s in a photo because the description isn’t clear or doesn’t exist.
Facebook has made it easier to skim through the content on its website with a screen reader by improving HTML headings, adding alternative text for images, launching keyboard shortcuts, and more. Using artificial intelligence to describe photos is only a part of these ongoing efforts.
With 1.5 billion users, Facebook isn’t the only social media company that wants to improve its website for the visually disabled. Along with Facebook and other major tech firms, Twitter and LinkedIn have their own accessibility teams and belong to an initiative called “Teaching Accessibility”.
Jeff Wieland, Facebook’s head of accessibility engineering, said the group wants to educate more engineers, especially early in college, about designing products that are compatible with the disabled and others. “We really don’t want accessibility to be the luxury of a handful of companies,” Wieland said. “We want everything around the world to be built with accessibility in mind.”
12. What tool helps the visually disabled to read Facebook?
A. A special keyboard. B. A screen reader.
C. A helpful robot. D. HTML headings.
13. What does the passage suggest about the new tool created by Facebook?
A. It adds a lot of shortcuts on the keyboard.
B. It meets no competitors with its advanced technology.
C. It helps users to employ their senses other than sight.
D. It inspires more engineers to explore artificial intelligence.
14. The underlined phrase in the last paragraph “are compatible with” most probably means ________.
A. bring harm to B. well suit
C. keep company of D. pave the way for
15. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?
A. Screen reader: tool to access social media
B. Ongoing efforts: strength to improve websites
C. Teaching accessibility: initiative to educate engineers
D. Artificial intelligence: power to help the visually challenged
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Patience is a virtue because it cultivates inner strength and sound judgment. In a world that often feels rushed and demanding, the ability to wait calmly and tolerate delays really empowers us to make clear-headed decisions. ____16____ Thus it can prevent us from making choices in a hurry that could have negative consequences.
With patience, we’re able to handle challenges with a level head. It helps us to focus on long-term goals rather than short-term setbacks. Things can’t always go according to plan. ____17____ It gives us the strength and determination to remain optimistic. Cultivating patience allows us to appreciate the process of growth and helps us handle difficulties with grace.
____18____ But we can remain calm, peaceful, and happy regardless. Patience plays its most important role in our interactions with people. With patience, we don’t explode at people easily. We work on gathering more information and looking for a solution instead.
Another important key to patience is gratitude. Instead of focusing on what we want right now, we focus on being grateful for what we already have. When we are grateful for what we have, we improve our ability to be patient. ____19____ If you resist this, you suffer. That suffering creates more impatience. But if you accept that one of the guarantees of life is change, you will relax.
Patience is being present, examining your options, and working to move forward. If things work out, then great. But if they don’t, then we try something else. It’s just that simple. There is so much good in developing the virtue of patience. It takes work, it takes effort, but there are so many benefits of developing patience. ____20____
A. It’s necessary to make early plans.
B. However, we must realize that life changes.
C. This promotes a great sense of achievement.

A. Its inefficiency to ease loneliness.
【答案】4. C 5. C 6. D 7.

14 The underlined phrase in the last paragraph “are compatible with” most probably means ________.
A. bring harm to B. well suit
C. keep company of D. pave the way for
15. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?
A. Screen reader: tool to access social media
B. Ongoing efforts: strength to improve websites
C. Teaching accessibility: initiative to educate engineers
D. Artificial intelligence: power to help the visually challenged
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. B 15. D

The realization wrapped around him like a hug he didn’t know he was craving. Suddenly, tears welled up as he realized his mother’s tender care never faded. “I miss you,” he said, pressing the phone to his chest like it was a piece of her, “so much.” He looked at the familiar words, his heart trembling—such a gift, unexpected yet so full of love, made his birthday both shocking and deeply moving.
