阅读下面的短文,掌握其大意,然后从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选择最佳选项。
When I was sixteen, I got my first job at a local bakery. I was so excited and eager to do everything perfectly. One busy Saturday afternoon, a customer walked up to the counter (柜台), her face red with anger.
“This cookie is not fresh” she shouted, putting a half-eaten cookie down heavily in front of me. “I want you to give my money back right now!”
My heart started pounding. I felt attacked and my first thought was to get defensive (防御的). “It’s not bad,” I thought. “We bake everything fresh every morning!” I was about to say exactly that when I remembered my manager’s ____11____: “The customer isn’t always right, but they always need to be heard.”
I took a deep breath—a small but important act to calm myself down. Instead of firing back I made a choice for my personal growth. I looked at her and said, as ____12____ as I could, “I’m so sorry you’re disappointed. Let me get you a fresh one from what we just cooled.”
I went to the back and ____13____ the biggest and softest chocolate chip cookie I could find. Then I ____14____ it on a little plate, and brought it to her. “Here you go, on the house. I really hope you like this one.”
The woman was completely taken aback. The anger disappeared from her ____15____, replaced by surprise and then a bit of embarrassment (尴尬). “Oh… well… thank you,” she said. She didn’t just take the cookie and leave. She stayed, finished her coffee, and before she left, she came back to the counter and said, “You know, that was actually very nice of you. Thank you, young lady.”
At that moment, I learned a powerful lesson about solving problems. The problem wasn’t really the cookie. The problem was that the customer felt she was not heard and disrespected. By choosing not to argue, I ____16____ the situation by making the customer less angry. By listening and offering a simple and kind solution, I didn’t just solve her problem—I turned a negative experience into a positive one.
That cookie didn’t just teach me about customer service; it taught me a life skill. You can’t control how other people ____17____, but you can always control how you react. Choosing ____18____ and kindness over anger is a superpower. It keeps you safe from unnecessary troubles, helps you grow into a wiser person, and almost always leads to a better solution.
11. A. advice B. victory C. address D. message
12. A. quickly B. naturally C. calmly D. simply
13. A. tried out B. picked out C. came round D. handed in
14. A. headed B. found C. handed D. placed
15. A. wound B. face C. order D. body
16. A. started B. made C. improved D. finished

The Broken fence
Everyone in Mr. Miller’s neighborhood knew his beautiful garden. It was full of colorful flowers and the greenest grass. But the most famous part was the white wooden fence around it. It was perfect—not a single board was broken or dirty.
Every weekend, Mr. Miller was outside, painting the fence or pulling out tiny weeds (杂草). His next-door neighbor, a young boy named Leo, loved watching him work.
“Your fence is so perfect, Mr. Miller,” Leo said one day.
“Thank you,” Mr. Miller replied with a smile. “It’s important to take care of our things.”
One night, a terrible storm hit the town. The wind was very strong, and a large branch from an old tree fell right onto Mr. Miller’s famous fence.
The next morning, Leo went outside. He saw the damage. A whole section of the white fence was broken into pieces. He felt very sad for his neighbor. He ran to Mr. Miller’s house, expecting to find him upset.
But Mr. Miller was just standing there, looking at the broken fence. He didn’t look angry. Instead, he was lost in thought.
“I’m so sorry about your fence, Mr. Miller,” Leo said.
Mr. Miller turned to him. “Thank you, Leo. But look,” he said, pointing to the hole. Leo looked through the broken space. From this new angle, he could see a part of the forest behind their houses that was always hidden by the fence. The morning sun was shining through the trees, and a small deer was drinking from a stream. It was a beautiful and peaceful picture.
“I never knew we had this view,” Leo said.
“Neither did I,” said Mr. Miller. “I was so busy keeping the fence perfect that I never thought about what it was hiding.”
Instead of repairing the fence immediately, Mr. Miller did something surprising. He removed the whole broken section. Then, he built a simple wooden bench (长椅) and placed it facing the new view. He even planted some wildflowers to attract more birds and butterflies.
Now, the garden was even more beautiful. It wasn’t just a perfect, closed space anymore. It was connected to the nature around it. Mr. Miller and Leo often sat on the bench together, watching the seasons change.
22. What was the most famous part of Mr. Miller’s garden?
A. The colorful flowers in the garden. B. The greenest grass in the garden.

23. How did Mr. Miller look when he found the fence was broken in the storm?
A. Angry. B. Upset. C. Excited. D. Thoughtful.
24. What lesson can we learn from this story?
A. We should take good care of our things and keep them perfect.
B. We should face changes with a positive and open mind.
C. We should be there for our neighbours when needed.
D. We should always open our eyes to the beauty of nature.
C
For a long time, people thought that when children became teenagers, parents should step back. But new studies show something different. The teenage years are not a time for parents to be less involved. Instead, they are a time to stay connected, just in new ways.
From Boss to Guide
Parents often act like “managers”. They tell their teens what to do and make all the decisions. However, research now suggests a better role: be a “guide”. A guide does not give orders. A guide offers advice when the teen asks for it. A guide respects that the teenager is becoming more independent but is still there to help. This way, parents use their influence through a strong relationship, not through strict control.
The Growing Teen Brain
Why do teenagers sometimes act unreasonably or have strong mood swings (起伏)? Brain science gives us an answer. The part of the brain that controls good judgment and decision-making is still developing in the teen years. This means that a teen’s sometimes risky or emotional behavior is not just them being difficult—it is a normal part of brain development. Knowing this can help parents be more patient. They can focus on helping their teens learn to make good choices while the brain is still learning how.
What Teenagers Need to Do
Experts say that all teenagers are working on four important tasks as they grow up:
• Be Their Own Person: They want to make their own choices.
• Discover Who They Are: They try out different ideas to find their identity (身份).
• Become More Independent: They naturally create some distance from their parents.
• Make Close Friends: They build strong friendships outside the family.
When parents understand these tasks, they can see their teen’s behavior differently. Arguing about a small rule might really be about the teen’s need for more independence. This new view can reduce fights and help parents support their child’s growth.
One of the most powerful findings is about empathy—the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Studies show that when teenagers feel understood and listened to by their parents, they are more likely to be understanding and kind to others. Simply listening to a teen’s feelings without immediately judging or solving the problem can build great trust. This kind of connection makes the teenage years easier and helps build a strong, positive relationship for the future.
In summary, these new ideas give parents a more hopeful way to see the teenage years. By being a guide instead of a boss, understanding the teen brain, supporting their growth tasks, and listening with empathy, parents can turn these years into a time of positive growth and a closer bond (联结).
25. According to the passage, which of the following actions best shows the parent’s role as a “guide”?
A. Making a strict daily schedule for the teen to follow.
B. Giving clear instructions on how to solve a problem step by step.
C. Offering advice when the teen needs help with a friendship problem.
D. Telling the teen that his new interest won’t last long and will pass.
26. According to brain science, why do teenagers sometimes have strong mood swings?
A. Because they want to make their parents angry.
B. Because they lack communication with their parents.
C. Because they spend too much time with emotional friends.
D. Because their brain’s area for good judgement is still developing.
27. What is the best heading for Paragraph 6?
A. The Importance of Understanding B. The Power of Listening
C. The Benefit of Connecting D. The Ways of Sharing
28. Which of the following may the writer most likely agree with?
A. Parents should strictly manage their teenagers’ lives to keep them safe.
B. A teenager’s need to make their own choices is a natural part of growth.
C. The main goal of the teenage years is to get good grades for the future.
D. It is hard to build a close bond with teenagers because of their brain.
D
“Do not get the idea that you’re anything special, because you’re not.” This is what English teacher David McCullough told graduates at Wellesley High School. Mothers and fathers present at the ceremony (典礼) disagreed with McCullough’s words. But in all that anger and disagreement, we missed something we really should keep in mind: our young people actually have no idea whether they’re really talented or not. In our hope to build their confidence, we forgot to teach them how to correctly evaluate (评估) their own abilities. In fact, it’s not just these high-school students: we all tend to view ourselves as above-average. Therefore, it is of great importance for us to learn and teach our kids how to evaluate ourselves (themselves) objectively (客观地).
Inflated (膨胀的) self-judgments have been found in study after study. Usually, when we perform worst at a given task, we feel most satisfied with our performance. In a 2020 study published in the journal Medical Education, for example, medical students who scored the lowest on a test were the most sympathetic in their self-evaluations, while high-scoring students judged themselves much more strictly. Poor learners, the authors say, cannot realize their own inability. Why should this be? Another study offers an explanation. People who have a low level of ability suffer from a “dual burden”: they’re not good at what they do, and their inability prevents them from recognizing how bad they are.
In Dunning’s study, participants scoring at the bottom on tests of logic, grammar and humor “extremely overestimated (高估)” their talents. Although their test scores put them in the 624th, they guessed they were in the 12th. What these individuals didn’t have was “meta cognitive skill” (元认知技巧) : the ability to monitor how well (or badly) they’re performing. Without that ability, the participants arrived at an overly hopeful view of their own abilities.
Luckily, there are a couple of ways to deal with it. First, we can learn to make honest comparisons with others. Train yourself to recognize excellence, even when you don’t have it. Then compare what you can do with what excellent people are able to do. Second, often ask others for opinions and try to make sure they are correct and specific. Find someone who will tell you not only how poorly you’re doing, but also what you’re doing wrong.
If we use these ways—and most importantly, teach them to our children—they won’t need parents, or a graduation ceremony speaker, to tell them whether they’re special or not. If they are, they’ll already know that they are. Or they’ll have a plan to get that way.
29. Why does the writer mention David McCullough’s speech at the beginning of the passage?
A. To introduce the problem of wrong self-view.
B. To show the anger of parents at the ceremony.
C. To discuss what makes a person truly special.
D. To criticize the wrong ideas of an English teacher.
30. The underlined word “sympathetic” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”.
A serious B. negative C. honest D. kind
31. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The test of logic itself can tell if participants have “meta-cognitive skill”.
B. We make honest comparisons with others in order to do better than them.
C. The opinions of others may help us better understand our actual performance.
D. The medical students in the 2020 study couldn’t recognize excellence in others.
32. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To explain what “meta-cognitive skill” is and how to develop it.
B. To stress the need for objective self-evaluation and offer solutions.
C. To introduce studies on self-judgment and ways to accept ourselves.
D. To discuss why we view ourselves as below-average and offer advice.
七、阅读表达 (共10分,50-52题每小题2分,53题4分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。请将答案写在答题纸的相应位置上。
Are you listening to music or eating a snack while you read this? Are you thinking about your homework at the same time? If you are doing two or more things together, you are multitasking. But is that always good?
You might think that multitasking saves time. For a start, you get to kill two birds with one stone. However, scientists are finding that multitasking can put us under a lot of stress, and actually make us less efficient (高效的).
Researchers are now trying to figure out how the brain moves attention from one subject to another. Although doing many things at the same time can be a way of making tasks more fun and lively, “you have to keep in mind that you do this at the cost of focus,” said psychiatrist (精神病专家) and author Edward M. Hallowell.
However, there are examples in which multitasking can be helpful. In some cases, listening to music while doing easy homework makes some students feel more creative because they are using different ways of thinking. And people can do simple, everyday tasks together, such as walking and talking. But, once they need deeper thinking, the brain has “a serious bottleneck,” Hallowell said.
Today’s technology makes us do more and more things in a shorter period of time. It is a very different world from 10 or 20 years ago, when a desk worker had a typewriter, a phone and maybe a coworker who visited the office. In the past, many people used telephones with cords (电线), which were fixed. You needed to sit down, put your feet up and chat—multitasking wasn’t allowed. Now, smartphones and PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) give us more distractions (使分心的事).
Multitasking can make things more exciting, but be careful. As Hallowell added, “Multitasking gives the illusion (幻觉) that we’re achieving things at the same time, but we’re really not. It’s like playing tennis with three balls.”
33. What is multitasking according to the passage?

从下面各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选择可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
1. My mom always wakes me up ________ 6:15 a.m. to make sure I have enough time to have breakfast before school.
A. in B. on C. at D. for
本题中“6:15 a.m.”是具体时间点,因此用介词at。故选C。
2. —________ will the new sports center be open to students?
—In about two months.
A. How soon B. How far C. How long D. How often
【答案】A
【解析】
【详解】句意:——新体育中心还要多久对学生开放?——大约两个月后。
考查特殊疑问句。How soon多久以后,对“in+时间段”提问;How far多远,询问距离;How long多长时间,对“for+时间段”提问;How often多久一次,对频率提问。根据“In about two months”可知,用“in+时间段”回答,提问用How soon。故选A。
3. Tom brings an umbrella to school every day ________ it often rains suddenly in his city.
A. or B. but C. so D. because
【答案】D
【解析】
【详解】句意:汤姆每天带雨伞去学校,因为他的城市经常突然下雨。
考查连词。or或者;but但是;so所以;because因为。根据“Tom brings an umbrella to school every day…it often rains suddenly in his city.”可知,前半句“带雨伞”是结果,后半句“经常突然下雨”是原因,需用表示原因的连词连接,D项符合。故选D。
4. We will have a picnic by the lake if it ________ tomorrow.
A. rains B. doesn’t rain C. will rain D. won’t rain
【答案】B

考查条件状语从句的“主将从现”原则。rains下雨,一般现在时态;doesn’t rain不下雨,一般现在时态;will rain将会下雨,一般将来时态;won’t rain不会下雨,一般将来时态。根据“We will have a picnic by the lake if it...tomorrow.”可知,此处表示去野餐的条件是不下雨,因此从句用否定形式,排除AC选项,且if引导的条件状语从句,主句为一般将来时,从句需用一般现在时。故选B。
5. Lily practices playing the piano for an hour every day ________ she can pass the piano grade exam successfully.
A. as soon as B. such that C. so that D. in order to

Instead of firing back, I made a choice for my personal growth.
You can’t control how other people ____17____ but you can always control how you react. Choosing ____18____ and kindness over anger is a superpower. It keeps you safe from unnecessary troubles, helps you grow into a wiser person, and almost always leads to a better solution.

Now the garden was even more beautiful. It wasn’t just a perfect, closed space anymore. It was connected to the nature around it. Mr. Miller and Leo often sat on the bench together, watching the seasons change.

D. It is hard to build a close bond with teenagers because of their brain.

A. serious B. negative C. honest D. kind
