Traditional Chinese handicrafts tell amazing stories about our culture and people. These beautiful art forms show the wisdom (智慧) and creativity that have been passed down through many centuries.
Leaf-vein embroidery (叶脉刺绣) from Guizhou Province is one of China’s most special traditional crafts. This art form first appeared during the Song Dynasty. Local people use it to create (创造) beautiful artwork and even send messages to each other.
Yang Li, a master of leaf-vein embroidery, has spent her whole life learning and teaching the skill. It is very difficult. First, artists must carefully choose the best leaves from special plants in the mountains. Then they dry the leaves for about 20 days until they become soft but very fragile. Finally, they draw beautiful patterns on the leaves and embroider (绣) them with colorful threads. “Each piece takes weeks to complete,” Yang Li says. “The leaves break easily, so we can’t make even one small mistake.”
This traditional craft faces serious challenges (挑战) today. Yang Li says that only about 20 people in her city can complete the whole leaf-embroidery process by themselves. “Young people like modern jobs with better pay,” she says sadly. “But I believe this beautiful art should not die away.”

In 2022, she also started using social media (社交媒体) to show young people how amazing leaf-vein embroidery is.
