Growing up in a small city in America, I’ve found an unexpected sense of home in China’s smaller towns. With a wish to see more of China’s lesser-visited places, I planned a trip to the northwest with seven friends — five Americans, one Englishman and one Australian. We bought round-trip (往返) air tickets from Shanghai to Yinchuan, Ningxia, for $120 each. From there, we planned to rent (租) a car and drive to Xining in Qinghai, then on to Qinghai Lake, and finally to Lanzhou, Gansu.
In Yinchuan, we stored snacks. From there, we headed west, going on wide highways with beautiful landscapes around us. One of the most wonderful parts of our trip was camping by Qinghai Lake, the largest saltwater lake in China. There we met many kind people. One of them was Geng San, who invited us to camp on his land. “That’s what China is — it’s the people. But we underestimated just how cold it would be to camp next to Qinghai Lake in late March. It was deathly freezing. In preparation for the trip, we had ordered eight sleeping bags. However, when the temperature dropped to -10℃, all of us got into the cars.
Driving through Northwest China made us see China’s natural beauty and its people. Shop keepers greeted us with kindness. At every stop, we were touched by the warmth. It made the traveling in China so meaningful. Trips like this one remind me of the similarities between our two countries, although there are differences too.

In many parents’ eyes, their children don’t like doing chores. Even if the room is untidy, they still play computer games instead of cleaning the room. But in Australia, Jim and Robert’s mother, Mrs Black, comes up with a good way to get her children to do housework.
“Mum, have you worked out next week’s chores? Let Jim and me choose the cards. I can’t wait. It’s fun!” When Robert shouted out, his mother had already put all the cards on their big table. On the cards, there are some words like “sweep the floor”, “clean your bedroom”, “help Mum cook” and many others. Jim and Robert each chose two cards for each day from Monday to Friday. Then they would hang them on the weekday task board. Jim likes to clean the bathroom, so he first picked up his favourite card “clean the bathroom”. Robert first picked up the card with “make the bed”. Then they chose chores for the next days.
To help the children realize the importance of duty in the family, their mother thought hard and ended up with this idea of making them do chores happily. Of course, the parents do the chores on weekends and leave Jim and Robert two days free.

In a rainforest there are tall trees. The top of these trees is called the “canopy”. It is a world of life. Scientists want to study the plants and animals that live there, but reaching the top is not easy.
A scientist named Meg knows a lot about trees. People often call her “Canopy Meg”. When she was a child, she built tree houses and saved birds that fell from their nests. Now, she has climbed trees all over the world—from hot rainforests to cooler forests.
To study the canopy safely, Meg had the idea to build “walkways” between the trees. These walkways are like bridges. They let people walk high above the ground without hurting the trees. They are popular with scientists and visitors. However, walkways cannot reach the very top of the canopy, and there are still many mysteries (神秘的事) there. So, Meg uses a “canopy raft”. It is a light raft filled with air. A hot air balloon drops it onto the trees. Scientists can stand on it and watch the life in the canopy closely. Another way is to use a “tower crane”. It can move up and down, carrying scientists from the ground to above the treetops.
With these tools, scientists have found many insects living in the canopy, eating the leaves. Meg and her sons have had many exciting experiences, even sleeping in the trees and trying to eat bugs (虫子). Their work is very important to the study of the ecosystem.
Meg’s job is to find out more secrets of the treetops. She believes there are still lots of animals waiting to be discovered. Her work shows that the canopy is not just the top of the trees—it is a new world for science.

C
