New York
engine stopped working
ten hours
Answer: The problem started ten hours after the ship left New York, when the engine broke down/stopped working in thick fog.
3. How did the captain send a message to Billy?
“You are our last hope, little guy,” said the captain as he tied a note to Arny, the smaller and younger of the two pigeons. The captain threw him into the air. Arny flew around and around, higher and higher. Soon, the bird was away from the ship, and the captain couldn’t see Arny anymore.
“That’s a good sign,” said the captain with more hope.

Suddenly, the captain remembered the homing pigeons. He ran to them quickly, wrote a message for help, and tied it to Big Blue’s leg. Big Blue flew up and then returned almost right away.
The captain became more worried

3
Big Blue failed to send the message.
Arny flew away. It might bring help.
4. Why did the captain say “That’s a good sign”?
Answer: Because Arny might be able to fly back to the land and successfully send the message (unlike Big Blue who returned immediately).
Because Arny didn’t return immediately like Big Blue did. Instead, he kept flying higher and farther, which meant he was likely to fly through the fog to deliver the message.
5. Why was Arny so thirsty?
Billy knew what to do. He took the note, running as fast as he could to the company office. There, he learnt Arny had flown in fog and over the sea, for more than four hours.
Answer: Because it had flown in fog and over the sea for more than four hours.
Because he had flown nonstop for over four hours through thick fog and over the ocean.

In 1925, a deadly disease hit Nome, Alaska. The medicine was far away, and a snowstorm blocked all roads. A team of sled dogs, led by Balto, raced through freezing winds and deep snow. Balto couldn’t see in the storm, but he sniffed the trail bravely. After 5 days and 1085 km, they delivered the medicine, saving countless lives.
