I’ve never been an athlete. Aside from excelling at all academic disciplines at school, my main goal was to ___1___ PE at all costs. In my twenties, I went for an occasional yoga or Zumba class, but that was really the summary of all my athletic accomplishments.
That was until the end of 2016, when I was unexpectedly ___2___ . The odds of getting a new job soon were not in my favor and ___3___ thoughts of not being good enough started to kick in. I was feeling quite depressed but pushed myself to go and cheer for the TCS NYC Marathon runners as the course was going through our neighborhood.
However, while being there, I got phenomenal ___4___ from all the runners, smiling, applauding and high-fiving constantly. Not a runner myself, I thought maybe I could give running a shot, just to try, to use my neglected gym membership and see where it ___5___ me. And so I tried. I went to my local gym the next morning and got on a treadmill. I was out of breath by minute five, but I slowed down, walked for a bit and then restarted. I came back the next day, hoping to ___6___ a few minutes longer. By the end of two weeks, I could run for 30 minutes, which was a huge success.
While I saw my body starting to look more toned, I also noticed my negative thoughts didn’t occur that ___7___. And it sparked a thought — what if I could set a running goal and sign up for my first-ever race? I did and races sort of became a new hobby.
In the meantime, I was able to ___8___ a few freelance projects. They offered me a good income, and, most importantly, the time to work out for the big race. Also, when I was going for interviews, I started to feel very confident in my abilities, experience and skills.
I got my full-time job offer at my dream company just a couple of weeks before the half-marathon. Although I got an injury from over-training right before the race, I still went for it and still finished within my ___9___ time.
I still have a long running journey ahead of me — I’d love to work on my speed, my technique and I dream of running a marathon outside of the US. Running gives me ______10______ that I can do anything I set my mind to.

Following your passion (热爱) in life might not always be the popular choice but it is the best choice. This is a belief that David Marnah has instilled (逐渐灌输) in his three sons: Jesse, Francis, and Lord. Living in Ghana, most young boys their ages choose to play football if interested in sports. For these three teens, however, swimming is the best.
David, a football coach, often gets asked why he didn’t encourage his boys to follow his sport of choice. But for this loving father, this choice was an easy one to make — and it all originates from a sincere wish for his children to be themselves.
Having full support from their parents, these 14, 13-, and 11-year-old boys have become quite impressive swimmers. The three of them train as part of the swimming club called GH Dolphins.
While they each love the sport itself, they also have their own reasons for being as passionate as they are about it. Jesse, the oldest, is driven by the idea of making swimming a more popular choice for others in Ghana. Francis, the middle child, dreams of one day traveling to compete with athletes in other countries. For the youngest child, Lord, his love comes from watching his brothers fall in love with the sport.
“I train with the boys every time, and you should see how determined they are,” Bernard Morrison, their swim coach, said, “The boys are talented and have unique individual strengths. They have it in them to succeed, and I am excited to be part of their beginning.”
David is more than happy to cheer them on every step of the way. In fact, he doesn’t hesitate (犹豫) to change his plans in order to make sure he never misses any of their national competitions or training classes. David said, “If they see my presence and know I’m supporting them — I believe it helps them greatly to get over challenges and come out on top.”
14. What does the underlined part “this choice’ in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. David’s sons’ choice to take up a sport. B. David’s sons’ choice to follow in his steps.
C. David’s choice to become a football coach. D. David’s choice to support his sons’ passion.
15. What is the reason behind Jesse’s passion for swimming?
A. To popularize swimming in Ghana. B. To achieve personal recognition.
C. To compete internationally. D. To impress his brothers.
16. How did Bernard sound in paragraph 5?
A. Humorous. B. Confused. C. Positive. D. Curious.
17. How does David show his support for his boys?
A. He shares in their troubles. B. He plans for their training.
C. He records their competitions. D. He shows up for their activities.
D 15. A 16. C 17. D

Chicken is America’s most popular meat. Many people assume chicken follows a simple rule-of-thumb: Pink chicken turned white means “done.” It’s similar to how we cook other meats. But is this true? To study how cooks at home follow safety recommendations, researchers filmed 75 households in five European countries. From a random but nonrepresentative sample, they also conducted an online survey of nearly 4,000 households in the same countries that say they cook chicken.
Worried that chicken would dry out, most home cooks determined doneness by color and texture (口感) inside the meat, they found. Few bothered with thermometers (温度计), claiming they took too much time, were too complicated to use, didn’t fit in the chicken or weren’t necessary (although easy-to-use thermometers are inexpensive and widely available).
In additional lab experiments, the scientists injected raw chicken breast with bacteria (细菌), which cause millions of sicknesses, thousands of hospitalizations and hundreds of deaths each year in the United States. They cooked the breasts until they reached core temperatures ranging from 122 to 158 Fahrenheit, and they discovered something surprising. At 158 degrees, but not lower, bacteria inside the chickens’ cores was reduced to safe levels, and when cut open its flesh appeared dull and fibrous, not shiny like raw chicken. But meat began changing from pink to white far below this, and most color change occurred below 131 degrees Fahrenheit. Sometimes, the chicken’s core would be safely cooked, but unsafe levels of bacteria still existed on surfaces that hadn’t touched the grill plate.
So what are you supposed to do?
Dr. Bruno Goussault, a scientist and chef, recommends buying and cooking breasts and legs separately. Bring the breast’s core to 165 degrees Fahrenheit, he said, and the leg to between 168.8 and 172.4 Fahrenheit. If you really want to safely measure temperature for a whole chicken, insert a pop-up thermometer into the thickest part of the leg before roasting it, Dr. Goussault suggests. By the time it pops, the breasts will have long cooked. They will likely be dry and far from his standards of culinary (烹饪的) perfection. But you’ll be sure to, as Dr. Goussault says in French, “dormir sur ses deux oreilles,” or, figuratively, “sleep peacefully.”
18. Why didn’t home cooks measure temperature with a thermometer?
A. They could not afford it. B. It affected the taste of the meat.
C. It was not available in supermarkets. D. They thought it was too much trouble.
19. In lab experiments, when the temperature reached 158 Fahrenheit, the meat .
A. was free of bacteria B. still remained pink
C. appeared to dry out D. was reduced in size
20. What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A. The meat does not taste best when bacteria free.
B. The leg becomes fully cooked before the breast.
C. A whole chicken requires a higher temperature.
D. The thermometer should be placed inside the breast.
21. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Food safety. B. Simple lifestyle.
C. Cooking skills. D. Kitchen equipment.
D 19. C 20. A 21. A

由文章第二段Few bothered with thermometers (温度计), claiming they took too much time, were too complicated to use, didn’t fit in the chicken or weren’t necessary.
At 158 degrees, but not lower, bacteria inside the chickens’ cores was reduced to safe levels, and when cut open its flesh appeared dull and fibrous, not shiny like raw chicken.
Bring the breast’s core to 165 degrees Fahrenheit, he said, and the leg to between 168.8 and 172.4 Fahrenheit. They will likely be dry and far from his standards of culinary (烹饪的) perfection.
To study how cooks at home follow safety recommendations, researchers filmed 75 households in five European countries.
To study how cooks at home follow safety recommendations, researchers filmed 75 households in five European countries.

Challenging work that requires lots of analytical thinking, planning and other managerial skills might help your brain stay sharp as you age, a study published Wednesday in the journal Neurology suggests.
Researchers from the University of Leipzig in Germany gathered more than 1, 000 retired workers who were over age 75 and assessed the volunteers’ memory and thinking skills through a battery of tests. Then, for eight years, the scientists asked the same group to come back to the lab every 18 months to take the same sorts of tests.
Those who had held mentally stimulating(刺激), demanding jobs before retirement tended to do the best on the tests. And they tended to lose cognitive(认知) function at a much slower rate than those with the least mentally challenging jobs. The results held true even after the scientists accounted for the participants’ overall health status.
“This works just like physical exercise, ” says Francisca Then, who led the study. “After a long run, you may feel like you’re in pain, you may feel tired. But it makes you fit. After a long day at work-sure, you will feel tired, but it can help your brain stay healthy. ”
It's not just corporate jobs, or even paid work that can help keep your brain fit, Then points out. A waiter’s job, for example, that requires multitasking, teamwork and decision-making could be just as stimulating as any high-level office work. And “running a family household requires high-level planning and coordinating(协调), ” she says. “You have to organize the activities of the children and take care of the bills and groceries. ”
Of course, our brains can decline as we grow older for lots of reasons-including other environmental influences or genetic factors. Still, continuing to challenge yourself mentally and keeping your mind busy can only help.
22. Why did the scientists ask the volunteers to take the tests?
A. To assess their health status. B. To evaluate their work habits.
C. To analyze their personality. D. To measure their mental ability.
23. How does Francisca Then explain her findings in paragraph 4?
A. By using an expert’s words. B. By making a comparison.
C. By referring to another study. D. By introducing a concept.
24. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Retired Workers Can Pick Up New Skills
B. Old People Should Take Challenging Jobs
C. Your Tough Job Might Help Keep You Sharp
D. Cognitive Function May Decline As You Age
D 23. B 24. C

根据第四段中Francisca Then说的话“This works just like physical exercise,( 这就像体育锻炼一样有效。)”
第一段“Challenging work that requires lots of analytical thinking, planning and other managerial skills might help your brain stay sharp as you age(需要大量的分析思考、细致规划和其他管理技能有挑战性的工作,有可能会帮助你的大脑随着年龄的增长而保持敏锐。)”

根据本段标题“Write whatever comes to mind to get your creativity flowing.”(想到什么就写什么,激发你的创造力。)前文“Writing, in and of itself, can help you generate thoughts.”(写作本身可以帮助你产生想法。)
根据下文“Even if you stick to one type when you write, you can borrow smaller concepts, the latest trend, personality preferences, scenery ideas, and so much more from reading different types of books.”(即使你写作时坚持一种风格,你也可以从不同类型的书籍中借用更小的概念、最新的趋势、个性喜好、风景观点等等。)
段落标题“Try doodling (涂鸦) or drawing to relax and stimulate your creativity.”(试着涂鸦或者画画来放松和激发你的创造力。) 后文“Instead, try spontaneous (自发的) activities, such as doodling or abstract drawing, as a way to be creative without the pressure that can come with creating finished art.”(相反,尝试自发的活动,如涂鸦或抽象绘画,作为一种创造性的方式,没有创造成品艺术所带来的压力。)

It’s after midnight and you’ve been studying all day. Empty energy drinks line the table and you sigh, “Tomorrow, I’m getting ice cream. I deserve to treat myself.”
This year, the so-called “treat yourself culture” has expanded far beyond what was once a reward-based mindset. Now, “treating yourself” has become more about stress-caused indulgence (放纵). It represents the more deep-seated issues with the stress we regularly put ourselves under.
The root of the problem lies in our belief that we should be doing more work if it isn’t hard enough. Especially at a top university, I constantly find myself wanting to do more. I want more credits, a higher-grade point average, and more responsibilities I’ll later use as conversation topics in interviews. This drive is by no means a bad thing. We all are trying to eventually land in a place where we can relax and live a more enjoyable life. However, there are a lot of problems with this logic. Without sounding completely hopeless and pessimistic, it is possible that the future we imagine in our twenties will not become reality. Therefore, it is important to integrate things that make us happy with work, school or life induced stress.
Psychology certainly supports this belief. While having good self-control was positively associated with happiness, being able to enjoy life’s little pleasures without feeling ashamed of doing so is just as important. For example, even if you have a busy schedule of work, make time to stop by your favorite coffee shop or spend ten minutes to go on a walk outdoors.
I cannot urge you to give up your late nights of studying, energy drinks and all. I cannot tell you to always choose to do something that makes you happy over something you have or should do. Frankly, this is just not the way life works. We have to put up with the hard work and put in the time. Without pain, we’d also lose happiness and joy. It’s all about balance.
So, instead of looking at everything as a way to handle the stress and something to “treat myself”, let’s try to make treating ourselves a far more common practice in the busy lives we lead.
53. What causes the so-called “treat yourself culture”?
________________________________________________________________________________________
54. What does “this logic” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
________________________________________________________________________________________
55. How should we treat ourselves according to the author?
________________________________________________________________________________________
56. Are you a follower of “treat yourself culture”? Why or why not?(In about 40 words)
_____________________________________________________________________________
53. Stress.
54. It refers to the idea that if we work hard we will eventually land in a place where we can relax and live a more enjoyable life.
55. According to the author, we should integrate small daily pleasures into life, make treating ourselves common, and balance enjoyment with responsibilities.
Yes, I am. When stressed by exams or homework, I treat myself to a piece of cake or a short music break. It eases my pressure and helps me focus better later without neglecting my tasks.
根据第二段中的“Now, “treating yourself” has become more about stress-caused indulgence (放纵). It represents the more deep-seated issues with the stress we regularly put ourselves under.(现在,“善待自己”更多地是关于压力引起的放纵。它代表了我们经常让自己承受的压力的更深层次的问题)”可知,是压力导致了所谓的“善待自己文化”。故答案为Stress.
【54题详解】
考查推理判断。根据第三段中“We all are trying to eventually land in a place where we can relax and live a more enjoyable life. However, there are a lot of problems with this logic.(我们都试图最终到达一个我们可以放松的地方,过上更愉快的生活。然而,这种逻辑存在很多问题)”可知,这种逻辑指的是上文提到的我们都试图最终到达一个我们可以放松的地方,过上更愉快的生活。故答案为It refers to the idea that if we work hard we will eventually land in a place where we can relax and live a more enjoyable life.
根据第四段的“Psychology certainly supports this belief. While having good self-control was positively associated with happiness, being able to enjoy life’s little pleasures without feeling ashamed of doing so is just as important.(心理学确实支持这一观点。拥有良好的自我控制能力与幸福感之间存在正相关关系,而能够享受生活中的小乐趣,并且不因这样做而感到羞愧,这一点同样非常重要。)”,第五段的“Without pain, we’d also lose happiness and joy. It’s all about balance.(没有痛苦,我们也会失去快乐和喜悦。这一切都关乎平衡。)”以及第六段的“So, instead of looking at everything as a way to handle the stress and something to “treat myself”, let’s try to make treating ourselves a far more common practice in the busy lives we lead.(所以,与其将一切事物都视为应对压力的方式以及一种“自我犒劳”的手段,不如让我们尝试将“善待自己”变成我们忙碌生活中更为常见的行为。)” According to the author, we should integrate small daily pleasures into life, make treating ourselves common, and balance enjoyment with responsibilities.
Yes, I am. When stressed by exams or homework, I treat myself to a piece of cake or a short music break. It eases my pressure and helps me focus better later without neglecting my tasks.

Dear Jim,
I’m so glad to hear about your favorite sport — your passion for it really came through in your letter! As for me, my favorite sport is badminton, which I’ve been playing for three years.
It’s a sport for two or four players. You hit a shuttlecock over a net with a racket, and the goal is to make it land in the opponent’s court without them returning it legally. Remember to avoid touching the net or hitting the shuttlecock out of bounds.
Playing badminton brings me great benefits. It not only keeps me physically fit by improving my speed and coordination but also helps me relieve stress from studies. Playing with friends also strengthens our bonds.
Maybe we can play together if you visit China someday!
Yours,
Li Hua

IV.
It’s after midnight and you’ve been studying all day. Empty energy drinks line the table and you sigh “Tomorrow, I’m getting ice cream.

54. What does “this logic” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
