Pairing sweet music with dessert — Melt into the melody!
A composer claims to have found a way to make chocolate even tastier with music. Natalie Hyacinth researched how music can affect people’s senses while they eat. She found that sharper sounds strengthen sour and bitter flavors while smooth melodies make foods taste sweeter. In fact, she wrote a song called “Sweetest Melody,” to produce flowing music that highlights creaminess. She said enjoying chocolate can be a “multisensory experience.”
Pumpkin festival pumps up fall spirit — They go crazy for pumpkins.
As the fall season begins, the world’s largest pumpkin festival has opened in Ludwigsburg, Germany. Visitors can check out pumpkin-based foods, art sculptures (雕塑) made with pumpkins, and a rowing competition featuring giant pumpkins as boats. At the end of the celebration on November 2, giant pumpkins are cut open and their seeds are collected to grow next year’s crops.
Becoming the king of Crocs — He was a shoe-in for the title!
A man has earned a world record title after collecting thousands of Crocs shoes. As a teenager, Dogie Sandtiger’s goal was to obtain 366 pairs — one for each day of the year, including leap years. Now he has left that goal in the dust, owning more than 3,800 pairs of Crocs and earning the nickname (昵称) “Croc King.” Sandtiger hopes to eventually open his own museum, which he would call a “CrocsZeum.”
A menu for water enthusiasts — Real or fake?

The Harlem Renaissance was a golden age for African American culture. During the 1920s and 1930s, Harlem, New York City became a place where Black art, fashion, music, and literature boomed. Augusta Savage was one of the leading artists. Her desire to educate and support young artists energized her.
Augusta Savage grew up in Green Cove Springs, Florida. As a child, Savage started to create sculptures with clay (陶土). When she was 27, she modeled a group of figures and was awarded a special local prize. With this encouragement, Savage moved to Jacksonville, Florida. There, she sculpted portraits of famous Black people in the local community.
Savage decided to move to New York City in the 1920s to study art. There, Savage gained recognition for her impressive sculpting skills. At 30 years old, Savage got a scholarship to the Fontainebleau School of Arts in Paris. However, once the school committee found out she was Black, they took it back. Even with this setback, Savage made it to Paris and spent three years there. She exhibited her work at the Grand Palais, a historic museum and gallery in Paris.
After that, she returned to the United States. In 1937, she was appointed the first director of the Harlem Community Art Center and was asked by the New York World’s Fair to create a sculpture recognizing the musical talents of African Americans. She sculpted The Harp, her largest art piece. The Harp showed a group of 12 Black singers sculpted at different heights that looked like the strings of the harp. This sculpture was made from painted plaster (生石膏). There were no funds to cast the sculpture in metal or bronze. Sculptures made from plaster do not last very long, and after the fair in 1939, The Harp was unfortunately destroyed. After this event, Savage took a step back from the art world. She spent the rest of her years teaching children, writing, and spending time with her family until she passed away on March 26, 1962.
4. Why did Savage move to Jacksonville?
A. A local prize motivated her. B. Harlem Renaissance inspired her.
C. A school committee employed her. D. Jacksonville community funded her.
5. What challenge is mentioned about Savage’s study in Paris?
A. Culture shock. B. Language barrier.
C. Academic non-recognition. D. Unfair treatment.
6. What can we learn about The Harp?
A. It showed her strong passion for music.
B. It reflected the talent and role of black artists.
C. Savage became an art center director after its exhibition.
D. Savage rebuilt it after the fair because it was not perfect.
7. Which of the following best describes Savage?

The desire to disappear has been strong throughout history. Metamaterials developed in the early 21st century gave the hope. A piece of clothing offering universal invisibility (隐形) was practicable. Clothes were designed to hide their wearers not from other people, but from artificial intelligence.
Metamaterials are engineered fabrics containing special materials that control and change electromagnetic (EM) waves’ (电磁波) paths. Like water flowing around a stone, when EM waves hit a metamaterial, they aren’t absorbed or reflected but directed.
The main problem with metamaterials was that they were specific to wavelength. Some of the first invisibility devices could hide objects, but only from microwaves. Hiding from shorter wavelengths required an even more highly engineered material.
One promising approach came from materials first made in 2024 using self-adaptive photochromism (SAP) — essentially the same method used by chameleons, animals that can change the color of their skin to match their background. In 2024, students at Wuhan University in China had developed InvisDefense, a material that made wearers invisible to cameras run by AI. The key lay in its pattern, designed to disturb and avoid image-recognition systems. When caught on cameras, a person wearing InvisDefense clothing wasn’t seen as human by the AI. But the patterns in InvisDefense clothing were fixed. Dynamic (动态的) SAP materials then came along that could be programmed to display an endless swirl (漩涡) of colors. AI systems couldn’t classify the wearers as people — the systems simply recognized them as noise.
The next SAP development was ultra-thin full-face polymorph masks, known as polymasks, designed to be worn with regular clothing. The masks created a look that appeared to be completely real, moving naturally with the muscles beneath. However, the outward appearance was completely unlike the real face beneath.
Governments at first considered controlling polymasks, but fortunately, the simplicity of the technology made it widely accessible. Despite a criminal element among the users, most people would use the mask to escape endless targeted advertising, and the monitoring of the modern world.
8 What can metamaterials do according to paragraph 2?
A. Absorb and reflect light. B. Control flowing water.
C. Disturb the path of EM waves. D. Change the EM wave lengths.
9. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning chameleons in paragraph 4?
A. To argue for biological applications. B. To explain how SAP works.
C. To compare SAP with traditional devices. D. To highlight the 2024 material.
10. What is unique to polymasks?
A. They can mask the wearers as noise. B. They can display endless swirl of colors.
C. They can erase wearers from AI cameras. D. They can create a different look on cameras.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards polymasks?
A. Opposing. B. Favourable. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.
C 9. B 10. D 11. B
根据第二段“Metamaterials are engineered fabrics containing special materials that control and change electromagnetic (EM) waves’ (电磁波) paths.(超材料是一种人工合成的织物,其中含有能控制并改变电磁波路径的特殊材料。)”

根据倒数第二段“The masks created a look that appeared to be completely real, moving naturally with the muscles beneath. However, the outward appearance was completely unlike the real face beneath.(这些面具营造出的外观看起来极为逼真,能够随着下方肌肉的自然运动而移动。然而,面具呈现出的外貌与下方真实的面容截然不同。)”可知,多态面具的独特之处是它们可以在镜头前创造出不同的形象。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Governments at first considered controlling polymasks, but fortunately, the simplicity of the technology made it widely accessible. Despite a criminal element among the users, most people would use the mask to escape endless targeted advertising, and the monitoring of the modern world.(起初,各国政府考虑对多态面具进行管控,但幸运的是,这项技术的简易性使其得以广泛普及。尽管使用者中存在一些不法分子,但大多数人使用这种面具是为了躲避无休止的定向广告以及现代社会的监控。)”可知,作者对多态面具的态度是赞许的,故选B。

Does a sense of unease overshadow your delight whenever you indulge (沉湎) in a nice meal or you spend a carefree day doing something purely for fun? Many people struggle between the desire for pleasure and the flood of guilt that rises the moment they experience happiness. You may catch yourself thinking: “Am I taking too much time for myself?” or “Do I really deserve this?” That inner voice can cast a shadow over life’s brightest moments, leaving you with a mix of shame, anxiety, and even mild depression instead of celebration.
In many families, happy moments get complicated by conflict, punishment, or criticism. Maybe you grew up under constant pressure to stand out academically, so any break for entertainment came with accusations of laziness. Perhaps your caregivers always worked themselves to the bone, sending a message that rest or enjoyment are signs of weakness or irresponsible. These early lessons stick to our internal blueprint and shape how we respond to pleasure in adulthood.
You might be telling yourself: “I’m only worth this if I do that perfectly.” It’s a classic trap of perfectionism. You focus on a standard that’s nearly impossible to meet, so you never feel ready to truly enjoy life. Another contributor is the misguided idea that hardship means virtue (美德). If your value system depends on extreme selflessness, then giving yourself permission to have fun might not go comfortable with your moral identity. Sometimes, you even fear that enjoying yourself will invite envy or criticism. In reality, enjoying yourself can inspire others — when it’s true and free of guilt.
Over time, that guilt weighs you down, making it difficult to appreciate the life you’ve built. Guilt saps emotional energy and blocks personal growth. It makes it hard to go after your happiness. That guilt doesn’t just stay in your mind, either. You can feel it in your shoulders, in the unexpected headaches, or in the sleepless nights when you worry about not doing enough.
Actually, one cannot selectively silence emotions; when you silence the painful emotions, you also silence the positive emotions. The good news: you can break free from your old mindset. Pleasure does not have to be conditional. True freedom comes from self-acceptance, not from proving your worth.
12. According to the text family’s ______ makes us feel guilty when we experience pleasure.
A. criticizing signs of weakness B. impressing toughness in work
C. associating fun with laziness D. encouraging academic success
13. What can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A. Enjoying yourself has positive effects.
B. Doing things perfectly proves your value.
C. Overcoming hardship means moral superiority.
D. Avoiding pleasure ensures long-term happiness.
14. What does the underlined word “saps” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Increases. B. Preserves. C. Consumes. D. Maintains.
15. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Untie guilt from pleasure. B. See fun as an indulgence.
C. Silence your emotions. D. Uncover your worth.
C 13. A 14. C 15. A
根据第二段“Maybe you grew up under constant pressure to stand out academically, so any break for entertainment came with accusations of laziness. (也许你是在不断的学习压力下长大的,所以任何娱乐的休息都会被指责为懒惰。)”可知,家庭中把娱乐和懒惰联系起来让我们在经历快乐时感到内疚。故选C。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“In reality, enjoying yourself can inspire others — when it’s true and free of guilt. (实际上,当享受是发自内心且毫无愧疚感时,它能够激励他人。)”可知,享受自我能带来积极影响。故选A。
根据倒数第二段“Guilt (内疚)”和“emotional energy and blocks personal growth. It makes it hard to go after your happiness (消耗情感能量,阻碍个人成长,让你难以追寻幸福)”可知,内疚会消耗情感能量,saps的意思是“消耗”,和Consumes意思相近。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是最后一段“Actually, one cannot selectively silence emotions; when you silence the painful emotions, you also silence the positive emotions. The good news: you can break free from your old mindset. Pleasure does not have to be conditional. True freedom comes from self-acceptance, not from proving your worth. 。故选A。
Lately, I’ve been thinking about how the body speaks and the mind stays quiet. When we’re physically hungry, we know. Our stomachs growl (咕咕叫), our energy gets low, we feel it in our bones. But what happens when our mind is hungry? It doesn’t make a sound. It just slows down.
____16____ Not because we’re careless, but because they’re quiet. There is a sudden disinterest in the things we used to love. There is mental fog that makes everything feel harder. We are glued to the screen, not because we’re curious, but because we feel nothing.
We keep going anyway. ____17____ And we’ve trained ourselves to perform, not pause (暂停). So we give and give to deadlines, to conversations, to expectations, without noticing we’re pouring from an empty cup.
There’s a kind of tiredness that sleep won’t fix. ____18____ From skipping the things that once lit us up. From starving our minds of stillness, beauty, and joy.
And then I read this line “Unlike the stomach, the brain doesn’t warn you when it’s empty.”
It landed hard. How often do we go days, weeks, maybe longer, without feeding our inner world? ____19____ The “food” can be in the form of silence, slowness, and curiosity. We don’t need to earn rest. We don’t need to break down to take a break. We just need to notice when the fog sets in and give ourselves permission to pause.
____20____ But it does speak in forgetfulness and defeat. Listen closely. And feed it something soft. A walk without a phone. A paragraph of your favorite book. Or maybe a playlist that makes you feel something again.
A. We miss the signs.
B. Because we think “tired” means “lazy”.
C. We forget the mind needs to be fed too.
D. But there still exists a fix that suits you best.
E. Your brain might not growl when it’s hungry.
F. The reason underlying our unwillingness is hard to identify.
G. This tiredness comes from never being alone with our thoughts.
A 17. B 18. G 19. C 20. E

上文“But what happens when our mind is hungry? It doesn’t make a sound. It just slows down. (但当我们的心灵饥饿时会发生什么?它不会发出任何声音,只是变得迟钝)”说明心灵饥饿没有明显信号;由此可知,心灵饥饿的信号很容易忽略,选项A“我们忽略了这些信号。”符合语境,承接上文“心灵饥饿无声”。故选A项。
上文“We keep going anyway. (但我们还是继续前行)”说明我们不顾心灵饥饿仍坚持做事;下文“And we’ve trained ourselves to perform, not pause. (而且我们已经训练自己去行动,而不是暂停)”进一步解释坚持的原因。空处应说明“继续前行”的具体原因,与下文构成并列逻辑。选项B“因为我们认为“疲惫”就意味着“懒惰”。”符合语境,解释了我们不愿暂停的心理原因,衔接上下文。故选B项。
【18题详解】
上文“There’s a kind of tiredness that sleep won’t fix. (有一种疲惫是睡眠无法弥补的)”引出“特殊疲惫”的话题;下文“From skipping the things that once lit us up. From starving our minds of stillness, beauty, and joy. (源于放弃了曾经让我们充满活力的事情,源于让我们的心灵缺乏宁静、美好和喜悦)”具体说明这种疲惫的来源。空处应承接上文,点明疲惫的核心成因。选项G“这种疲惫源于从未与自己的思绪独处。”符合语境,解释疲惫的主要来源,引出下文的具体阐释。故选G项。
【19题详解】
上文“How often do we go days, weeks, maybe longer, without feeding our inner world? (我们多久会连续几天、几周甚至更长时间,不给自己的内心世界“喂食”?)”提出“未滋养内心”的问题;下文“The “food” can be in the form of silence, slowness, and curiosity. (这种“食物”可以是安静、缓慢和好奇心的形式)”明确了“滋养内心的食物”是什么。空处应承接上文,强调“心灵需要被滋养”这一核心观点。选项C“我们忘记了心灵也需要被喂养。”符合语境,feed与下文的food形成语义呼应,衔接自然。故选C项。
【20题详解】
下文“But it does speak in forgetfulness and defeat. (但它会通过健忘和挫败感来表达)”中的But形成转折,说明心灵饥饿虽无明显声音,但有其他表现。选项E“你的大脑饥饿时可能不会咕咕叫。”符合语境,故选E项。

The laughter remains a collective memory treasured by Nanjing ____38____ (local).

Sophie’s ballet shoes had been her companions for ten years. Every morning, she rose at five to practice; every weekend was spent in the dance studio. All her efforts were aimed at one goal: the audition (试镜) for The Juilliard School. But one month before the tryouts, her dream came to a stop. Cycling home in the rain, she slipped and fell, severely hurting her ankle.
“At least six weeks of rest,” the doctor declared, his words feeling like a final sentence. She missed the audition, which meant she had missed her golden ticket to her dream school. For the first few days, she simply lay in bed, listening to the rain, feeling as if the whole world had turned grey.
Then, her dance teacher paid a visit with a suggestion: “Why not try choreography (舞蹈设计)?” And so, Sophie began to “dance” with a pen instead of her feet. To her surprise, when she stopped being just a performer of movement and started becoming a creator of it, she uncovered a talent she never knew she possessed.
For the year-end performance, the piece she choreographed, Dance of the Rain, earned a standing ovation As the final note faded, one by one, then in rows, the audience rose to their feet, their faces lit up with awe and appreciation. The spotlight, which had followed her dancers so perfectly, now swung to find her in the wings (台侧) — it’s time for the curtain call.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Wheeling herself onto the brilliant stage, Sophie saw some familiar faces in the audience. Sophie’s gaze fell on her dance teacher, who was nodding with pride. A few rows back, her parents stood, clutching each other’s hands, their expressions a mixture of heartache and overwhelming joy. In that moment, the roaring applause seemed to fade into a distant hum, and all Sophie could feel was the profound, silent understanding passing between her and those who had witnessed her entire journey — from the crushing despair to this radiant, unexpected dawn.
Then Sophie was invited to share her experience, her eyes filled with tears. They were not tears of regret for the steps she could not take, but of profound gratitude for the beauty she had learned to create from stillness. Leaning forward slightly, she declared with heartfelt sincerity, “I am not dancing in the rain...I am dancing with it.” She had come to understand that the sorrows we encounter on the path to growing up can sometimes, in the most unexpected ways, guide us to authentic joy.

A. Ambitious but strict.
B. Creative but sensitive.
C. Curious and passionate.
D. Determined and gifted.

8. What can metamaterials do according to paragraph 2?
A. Absorb and reflect light. B. Control flowing water.
