B
The image of that staircase never left my mind. It had been forty years since I graduated high school, but the staircase haunted my memories.
Boys would sit on both sides of the staircase, rating the girls as we walked by. If they thought a girl was really ugly, they barked. Every time I walked up or down those stairs, the barks, woofs, and laughter rang in my ears. “Just ignore them,” my mother advised. And I did. On the surface. But inside, the painful message that I was ugly rooted deep into my soul. Eventually, I graduated, got accepted to college and landed a rewarding career.
Then I got an invitation to my fortieth high school reunion. I didn’t like high school, but I wanted to go back and tell those boys how hurtful and unkind they were. And I wanted to show them they were wrong. I had a husband, a family and all the things they’d made me feel I wasn’t worthy of. In September, I put on my favorite blouse, touched up my make-up, and drove to the Friday night opening reception.
However, on the night, people greeted me politely, flattering me with “You haven’t changed at all.” I’d look at the face and study the nametag with the graduation photo, but it didn’t ring a bell most of the time. Was I at the wrong reunion? No, some women remembered my mother being their Girl Scout leader. Others had kind things to say about my father, a local college professor. My planned speech wilted (枯萎) on my lips. Instead, I chatted breezily about my two grown sons and living in Seattle. People were nice enough, but aside from a couple of friends, I felt like I was talking to strangers.
It was pointless to hold a grudge (怨恨) against people I couldn’t even recognize. I was only hurting myself by replaying those memories in my mind. I knew I needed to forgive. A dark sorrow lifted from my soul. I felt happier, more self-confident and attractive.
Back home, our senior fitness instructor noticed that I was wearing a new T-shirt. “You are really rockin’ that shirt,” she said.
I smiled. She’d said that before, but this time I believed it.
24. Why did the author decide to attend the 40th high school reunion?
A. To meet her old teachers.
B. To prove her career success.
C. To apologize for past misunderstandings.
D. To confront hurtful boys and show her worth.
25. What can be inferred about the author’s feelings after the high school reunion?
A. Confused and sad. B. Angry and proud.
C. Relieved and confident. D. Disappointed and regretful.
26. What can we learn from this passage?
A. The author fought against her bullies directly.
B. The reunion attendees were mostly strangers.
C. The author’s career success healed her pain.
D. The instructor’s compliment was first truly embraced.
27. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. The Power of Letting Go B. A Surprising Reunion Letter
C. Finding Friends in Strangers D. The Painful High School Years
D 25. C 26. D 27. A

根据第三段中“Then I got an invitation to my fortieth high school reunion. I didn’t like high school, but I wanted to go back and tell those boys how hurtful and unkind they were. And I wanted to show them they were wrong. I had a husband, a family and all the things they’d made me feel I wasn’t worthy of. (后来,我收到了参加高中40周年同学聚会的邀请。我不喜欢高中,但我想回去告诉那些男孩,他们是多么伤人,多么不友善。我想证明他们错了。我有丈夫,有家庭,还有所有那些他们让我觉得自己不配拥有的一切)”可知,作者参加40周年高中同学会的目的是要面对曾经伤害她的男生,告诉他们其行为的伤人之处,并向他们展示她的自身价值。故选D。
【25题详解】

A dark sorrow lifted from my soul. I felt happier, more self-confident and attractive.(对那些我甚至都认不出的人怀有怨恨,实在毫无意义。
根据倒数第二段“Back home, our senior fitness instructor noticed that I was wearing a new T-shirt. “You are really rockin’ that shirt,” she said.(回到家,我们的老年健身教练注意到我穿了一件新T恤。“你穿这件衣服真好看,”她说)”以及最后一段“I smiled. (我明白,自己必须选择原谅。一种深深的悲伤从我的灵魂中消散,我感到前所未有的轻松快乐,也变得更加自信、更具魅力)”可知,文章主要讲述了作者放下怨恨,通过原谅过去伤害过她的人,释放了内心的痛苦,变得更加快乐和自信。由此可知,A选项“The Power of Letting Go(放下的力量)”能够概括文章主旨,为最佳标题。故选A。

“This is becoming a reality,” says Pasi Vainikka at Solar Foods. The company is building the first working factory, near Helsinki in Finland, which will be able to make food directly from CO₂. It will produce 100 tonnes per year, enough for 4 or 5 million meals, he says. “We are a bit behind schedule, but production may start just about in 2023,” says Vainikka.
At the factory, renewable electricity will be used to produce hydrogen and oxygen from water. The hydrogen will be added to large containers, where the bacteria grow. Some of the CO₂ will, be caught directly from the air at a visitor centre at the factory, Vainikka says, and the rest will come from industrial sources. The end result will be a yellow powder called Solein that is made of bacterial cells and is up to 70 percent protein. It can be used as an ingredient in all kinds of foods, from meat alternatives to snacks.
Solein was approved as a food ingredient in Singapore in October2022, and Solar Foods is awaiting approval in the UK, the European Union and the US.
Compared with plant crops, Solein will use 100 times less water per kilogram of protein produced, 20 times less land and give off a fifth as much CO₂, according to Solar Foods. Compared with beef, a kilogram of protein can be produced using 600 times less water and 200 times less land while giving off 200 times less CO₂, says the company. There are other benefits, too: factories could be situated anywhere in the world and production won’t be affected by weather extremes.
“With Solar Foods and other companies expanding their systems, this is truly introducing a new era of agriculture,” says Dorian Leger at Connectomix Bio in Germany. “I think these trends are exciting and will help improve global food security while reducing carbon output.”
28. What does Vainikka’s company plan to do?
A. Generate green energy.
B. Fight against water pollution.
C. Produce a food ingredient from CO₂.
D. Prepare meals for factory workers.
29. What do we know about Solein according to the text?
A. It contains a significant amount of protein.
B. It has been approved in the UK.
C. It comes from industrial waste.
D. It is a kind of bacteria.
30. What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us about Solein?
A. Its environmental problems.
B. Its noticeable advantages.
C. Its production process.
D. Its demanding needs.
31. What does Leger think of producing Solein?
A. It depends on support from global companies.
B. It can help feed people around the world.
C. It can replace traditional agriculture.
D. It is already reducing air pollution.

Established earthquake warning systems provide at best just a minute or two of notice, leaving little time for preparedness. Decades of searching for a better warning sign-changes in the geochemistry of groundwater, electromagnetic effects in the upper atmosphere, and even changes in animal behavior-have failed. Many question whether such a precursor (先兆) even exists. This situation may change soon, as recent research is providing a glimmer of hope for improved earthquake prediction.
Researchers Quentin Bletery and Jean-Mathieu Nocquet from Cote d’Azur University in France collected data from over 90 earthquakes with magnitudes larger than 7 that had occurred in the past two decades. They focused on GPS station records near these quakes, which accurately captured land movement every 5 minutes with millimeter precision. They analyzed more than 3,000 time series of motion in the 48 hours leading up to the main ruptures (断裂).
They noticed that, in the first 46 hours, the records showed no significant features. However, during the 2 hours before the earthquake, they noticed signs of increasing movement along the fault zones (断层带). Essentially, there’s a slip between plates causing the land above them to move in a measurable, horizontal direction.
Could this be just a coincidence? The probability of this increase happening just before the quake and being unrelated is extremely low, and the researchers confirmed this by analyzing 100,000 random time windows in non-earthquake GPS data. The pattern occurred only 0.03% of the time in non-earthquake data.
While this precursor signal won’t be used for warnings anytime soon, officials from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) admit that this new study provides valuable insights into how to improve their warning systems-GPS data can grease the wheels of early earthquake warnings.
The researchers admit there are still a number of steps away from putting this precursor signal into use, particularly since detecting subtle signals at individual faults requires more GPS stations. But the biggest problem is that many of the world’s earthquake regions have no instrumentation. “We can’t realize the detection at the scale of one earthquake, so we cannot make predictions,” Bletery said.
32. What remains a tough problem for scientists?
A. Determining the magnitude of an earthquake.
B. Finding a way to detect earthquakes in early stages.
C. Measuring atmospheric changes during earthquakes.
D. Identifying animals’ possible responses to earthquakes.
33. What did the researchers find through their data analysis?
A. The chance of main ruptures occurring in fault zones.
B. The accuracy of GPS in recording land movement.
C. The existence of a two-hour precursory phase.
D. The horizontal slip within the first 46 hours.
34. What does the underlined part “grease the wheels of” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Distinguish. B. Contradict. C. Overmatch. D. Facilitate.
35. What holds back the practical application of the new findings?
A. The inaccessibility of precursor signals.
B. The complexity of updating GPS equipment.
C. The challenge of identifying earthquake regions.
D. The inconsistent slip patterns of different earthquakes.
B 33. C 34. D 35. A
根据第一段“Decades of searching for a better warning sign-changes in the geochemistry of groundwater, electromagnetic effects in the upper atmosphere, and even changes in animal behavior-have failed. Many question whether such a precursor (先兆) even exists. (几十年来,人们一直在寻找更好预警信号——地下水地球化学的变化、高层大气的电磁效应,甚至动物行为的变化——但都以失败告终。许多人甚至质疑这样的前兆是否存在。)”可知,科学家们仍然面临的难题是找到早期阶段监测地震的方法,故选B。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。 根据第三段“They noticed that, in the first 46 hours, the records showed no significant features. However, during the 2 hours before the earthquake, they noticed signs of increasing movement along the fault zones (断层带). (他们注意到,在最初的46个小时里,记录没有显示出明显的特征。然而,在地震发生前的2小时内,他们注意到沿断裂带移动增加的迹象。)”可知,研究人员通过数据分析发现地震发生前2小时前兆的存在。故选C。
【34题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词上文“While this precursor signal won't be used for warnings anytime soon, officials from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) admit that this new study provides valuable insights into how to improve their warning systems- (虽然这种前兆信号短期内不会用于预警,但美国地质调查局(USGS)的官员承认,这项新研究为如何改进他们的预警系统提供了有价值的见解)”故推测下文意思是GPS数据可以推动早期地震预警的进展,所以grease the wheels of意思是推动进展,故选D。
根据最后一段“The researchers admit they're still a number of steps away from putting this precursor signal into use, particularly since detecting subtle signals at individual faults requires more GPS stations. But the biggest problem is that many of the world's earthquake regions have no instrumentation. “We can't realize the detection at the scale of one earthquake, so we cannot make predictions,” Bletery said.

上文“Extreme heat can kill people, even though most of the deaths are preventable. It is reported that in the 24 years between 1979 and 2003 more people died in the United States of extreme heat than from hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, floods and earthquakes.( 高温会杀死人类,尽管大多数死亡都是可以避免。据报道,在1979年至2003年的24年间,美国死于极端高温的人数,比死于飓风、闪电、龙卷风、洪水和地震的人数还要多)”,以及下文“The golden rules are to drink plenty of water, dress in cool clothes and stay in the shade if possible.( 黄金法则是多喝水,穿凉快的衣服,尽可能呆在阴凉处)”可知,设空处应是针对高温会杀死人类这一现象,提出“该如何避免,在高温中生存下来”的方法。A项“How can we survive it?(我们该如何从中生存下来?)”
下文“Often after many months without rain, a single spark is all that is necessary to create a big fire. Wildfires can move at great speed and will destroy everything in their path. They can quickly change direction, which makes it very difficult for someone on the ground to escape. (通常在几个月没有下雨之后,一个火星就足以引起一场大火。森林大火的速度很快,会摧毁一切挡在它们前面的东西。它们可以迅速改变方向,这使得地面上的人很难逃脱)”说明高温会引发野外森林大火。设空处位于段首,对下文具有引出作用,下文是对设空处的解释阐述。B项“Extreme heat can also bring wildfires.( 高温也会引发野火)”与下文一致。故选B。
下文“In 2010 such fires in Russia killed 62 people and destroyed about 23, 000 square kilometers. A recent UN report suggests that the growing number of wildfires around the world may be contributing to global warming.( 2010年俄罗斯发生的这种大火,造成62人死亡,毁坏面积约23000平方公里。联合国最近的一份报告指出,世界各地越来越多的野火可能加剧了全球变暖)”,说明野火造成的极大危害与损失。由此可知上文设空处应是讲“如果不迅速采取行动”可能在短时间内造成巨大损失,从而引出下文。G项“If quick action is not taken”与下文的数据一致。
D项“Very often you can see such a terrible circle”与下文一致。故选D。
根据前文“It is clear that the world is getting warmer.(很明显,世界正在变暖)”以及后文“but it is reasonable to assume that this process is being speeded up by mankind’s release into the atmosphere of large amounts of greenhouse gas.(但我们有理由认为,人类向大气中排放大量温室气体加速了这一过程)”可知,此处是在讲述全球变暖的过程,所以C项“This is probably due to a natural process(这可能是一个自然过程)”符合文意,承接上下文。故选C项。

It was a warm spring afternoon, and the sun cast a golden hue (色调) over the small town of Willow Creek. The city’s annual art exhibition was going on, and the visitors were discussing the works with excitement. Among them was Emily, a talented artist. She appreciated the pictures with her heart pounding in her chest.
Emily had always been passionate about painting since young. Over the years, her talent had bloomed, and her pictures had become a reflection of her soul — full of life and emotion. Each brushstroke (笔画) was a whisper of her thoughts, a secret shared with the world. Today, she exhibited a painting of her grandmother, a woman who had shaped her life with love and care. The painting was a reminder of the impact her grandmother had on her life, a symbol of the bond that would never fade.
As the exhibition continued, Emily watched with nervous anticipation as people moved around the room, admiring various works. Emily searched their faces for a reaction, her heart jumping when she saw a smile or a nod of appreciation. Suddenly, a familiar voice called out, “Emily, this is wonderful! Your grandmother looks so alive on this picture.” It was her art teacher, Mr. Smith, standing before her painting with a look of genuine admiration. His words filled her with a sense of achievement and relief.
The rest of the afternoon passed soon. More praises came her way. But it was the elderly man who caught her attention. He stood before her painting for what seemed like a century, his eyes misty with memories. When he finally spoke, his offer took her by surprise. “This painting reminds me so much of my late grandmother. I would like to make you an offer. Would you consider selling this painting to me?”

At that moment, Emily hesitated. What should she do? She couldn’t imagine parting with the painting that held so many precious memories of her grandma. However, the thought of the old man’s sense of loss also upset her. Emily stood there, her gaze fixed on her painting. She recalled her grandmother’s warm smile and the love she had shown to her throughout her life. After a while, she turned to the old man, “I... I’m sorry,” she stammered, “I’m afraid I could not offer it to you.” The man nodded his head, forcing a smile and walked out of the exhibition room, a sense of loss spreading across his face.
Seeing the man leaving disappointedly, Emily made a new decision. She took down the picture, ran to the elderly man and spoke to him, “I’ve decided to offer you the painting.” Hearing the words, the man’s eyes widened with astonishment, “You mean it?” he asked, his voice trembling with emotion. Emily nodded her head firmly. Tears running down his face, the man reached out and took Emily’s hand tightly. “Thank you. This means the world to me.” Emily smiled, her heart filled with joy. It dawned on her that art not only has the power to create beauty but also conveys emotions and builds connections.

Farming is damaging the planet But there could be a much more environmentally friendly way to feed ourselves: using renewable energy to turn carbon dioxide (CO₂) into food.
D It is a kind of bacteria.
30. What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us about Solein?
A. Its environmental problems.
B. Its noticeable advantages.
C. Its production process.
D. Its demanding needs.
31. What does Leger think of producing Solein?
A. It depends on support from global companies.
B. It can help feed people around the world.
C. It can replace traditional agriculture.
D. It is already reducing air pollution.
D
A The inaccessibility of precursor signals.
B. The complexity of updating GPS equipment.
C. The challenge of identifying earthquake regions.
D. The inconsistent slip patterns of different earthquakes.
