Sunshine Community.Over 50 high school students participated enthusiastically.
The volunteers were divided into groups. Some visited elderly residents, chatting
with them and helping with housework.Others cleaned up public areas, removing
litter and wiping down facilities.Their hard work brought smiles to the community.
This event taught students the value of helping others and teamwork. It
strengthened the bond between our school and the community, showing that young
people can make a real difference. We believe such activities shape us into responsible

Facebook was running my life.
But what killed Facebook for me was when I posted a photo, and five minutes later my son
asked me how many "likes"it had got.His question was a wake-up call.
"Likes"are signs of acceptance and approval.I had forgotten that acceptance and approval need
to come from within and had unknowingly set him a bad example.
Before absorbed in Facebook,I spent a lot more time reading books and magazines.I checked in
with friends through texts, emails and phone calls.
To set a healthier example to my son,I deactivated'my Facebook account.
I'd been in the habit of checking Facebook many times a day,so I had to come up with some new
habits.I carried a novel and a crossword puzzle book around with me.I rediscovered knitting.I went
to the gym to take yoga classes.
I started to remember a few things. My body is fine just the way it is.I have friends who will
help me out when I'm in trouble, and I will help them out.I do my best to be a good mother, and our
son is happy and healthy. We are very lucky to be able to afford two vacations a year.
I stopped looking at the world through my cellphone.I felt completely present in the
moment. The break left me feeling better about myself,my family,my home and my life.
After a few weeks,I returned to Facebook. Now I look at the photos of my friends'kids growing
up and treasure how social media allows me to keep in touch with family.I no longer have the desire
to post updates often.
It is not an addiction any more.

The world's oceans will likely losc about one-sixth of their fish and other creatures within 100
years if climate change continues at its present speed. These are the findings of a computer-based
study by an International team of marine biologists(海洋生物学家)
Every degree Cclsius (C)that the world's oceans warm, their biomass,or the total weight of all
the marine animal life,is expected to drop by 5%,the study also found. The study predicts that if
there is no change in the speed of worldwide greenhouse gas production, there will be a 17%loss of
biomass by the year 2100.But,if the world reduces carbon (pollution, biomass losses could be
limited to only about 5%.
William Chung is a marine biologist at the University of British Columbia in Canada. He
co-wrote the study, and told the Associated Press,"There are already changes that have been noticed.
Warming temperatures are the biggest problem. But climate change also produces oceans that
are more acidic and have less oxygen, which can also harm sea life.
Much of the world depends on the oceans for food and work, the scientists say.University of
Victoria biology professor Julia Baum was not part of the study, but she said the findings made sense.
She noted that the possible influence of the predicted losses of animal life was huge."Climate
change may cause serious new problems with ocean resource (use and food safety as the
human population continues to grow,"said Baum.Marine biologist Boris Worm, who helped run the
study, added that those marine animals that we used directly and cared about most deeply, were
predicted to be most affected.
Former computer-based studies looked at only part of the picture or used only one model. The
latest study used six different computer models to give the best picture look,William Cheungn said.

If I could give today's young people three wishes, they would be:More hugs.More time outside
in nature.More belief in their own power to change the world. While most people understand the
importance of the first two wishes, the third one leaves some folks wondering why young people's
belief in their own power is so essential.
Let's start with the idea that all of us--especially young people--need heroes. We need them to
be our guides on the difficult trail()we call life and to show us just how far we can go.And we
need heroes today more than ever. Our modern society is terribly confused about the difference
between a celebrity and a hero. And the difference:is vital.A celebrity is all about fame(
)--temporary,superficial fame, usually for qualities that are easy to see:a pretty face,a great dance
move.A hero,by contrast,is about character--qualities under the surface that aren't visible until they
take action.
Heroes are all around us.They truly hold our world together, through their unselfish devotion to
helping others,teaching children,and protecting the environment.They don't want fame,or glory;
they just want to help.In so many ways, these unsung heroes pilot the boat in which all of us sail
Yet,young people hear a lot more about celebrities than about heroes in the media. The hidden
message they get from all this is that their self-worth comes from what they buy--which shoes, which
cell phone--not who they are down inside. What gets lost in this?Young people's sense of their own
potential for heroic qualitics--their own power to make a positive difference in the world.Truth is,
there is a potential hero,a future difference maker,in every young person. Each of them, from
whatever background,is a positive force who can do something. All it takes for that to be true is
belief.
How do we help young people belicve in their own power? The best way is simply to share
examples,of other young people who have made a difference.
Ryan, age 11,has worked tirelessly to raise money to provide clean drinking water to African
villages. When he first heard about the plight()of African children who died from impure water,
Ryan was only six years old.In the next five years,he raised over $500,000--enough to build over 70
water wells.
Barbara, age 17,grew up on a farm in Texas. When she realized that local farmers were pouring
their used motor oil into rivers, causing pollution, she organized the creation of a recycling center for
crude(未加提炼的)oil. Her project has-grown to includel8 recycling centers in Texas.
The list could continue. These are but a few examples of young people who have discovered
that they can build on their own energy to do something great
66.What is the author's purpose in writing Paragraph 2?
A.To give examples of celebrities and heroes around us.
B.To discuss the differences between celebrities and heroes.
C.To provide definitions of the words"celebrity"and "hero"
D.To explain the details about being celebrities and heroes.
67.What could be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A.Heroes make the world go round.
B.Heroes must believe in themselves.
C.Heroes focus on social welfare programs.
D.Heroes promote cooperation between people.
68.What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A.Heroes and celebrities are both valued today
B.Society doesn't support the development of heroes.
C.The media turn ordinary celebrities into real heroes.
D.Young people don't have the belief in their own strength.
69.How does the author advance his view that young people have the potential to be a hero?
A.By defining the qualities that make a young person a hero
B.By contrasting the achievements made by different young people.
C.By giving examples of young people who show the qualities of a hero.
D.By providing examples of qualities that have made young people famous.

I used to be a selfish girl and I only thought of myself.I did not care about helping others, but
only about my look, clothes, money and grades.
One day,I was suddenly influenced by my neighbor, who is now in college, and ended up
9
wanting to volunteer for others. He had so much fun with volunteering and told me that he felt
extremely good after helping others.I hoped to get the same results, for I felt worthless
everywhere then.I viewed almost cvcrything in a negative way,and I figured I had to expericnce
something that would make me appreciate things that I had.
I volunteered at the nursing home for a year where my neighbor volunteered.I brought snacks,
coffee and games for the elderly patients, talked to them while sharing snacks, and played games
like chess and checkers with them.Because they were Koreans, they often had trouble
communicating with the helpers who were hired to help them.I sometimes translated things for
them and offered to be their translator whenever they needed help.
By volunteering at the nursing home,I changed a lot.I realized how lucky I am to speak both
Korean and English and that I should help other people learn Korean as well.I had learned many
life lessons through volunteering.By helping others,I felt needed in society. Not only did it
boost my confidence, but it also allowed others to benefit from it.
Volunteering is a great opportunity to improve oneself, others, and the whole society. So if
you ever have the chance, volunteer! It's something you won't regret!
