Technology: The End of Classrooms?
We know it’s good to learn another language. It opens doors, makes you more employable, helps you make new friends, and it’s fun too. But to improve our linguistic skills, many of us have to endure hours of school lessons or evening classes, with our heads ____21____ in textbooks. It’s no wonder then that technology appears to be providing a better and more accessible way of learning.
There is certainly a huge demand for language learning, and having a smartphone means you can have a(an) ____22____ teacher with you wherever you go. Many app developers are keen to cash in on the demand, and there are numerous learning apps ____23____ — including the free BBC Learning English app!
Some educational apps offer languages not popular enough to be taught at evening classes, or at most universities. And others offer “invented” language courses in Esperanto, Elvish and Star Trek’s Klingon — lessons you might not find in a traditional classroom. Whatever you want to learn, apps allow you to go at your own ____24____ and fit learning around other commitments. But they’re not perfect — you might not get your head round the grammar and will ____25____ the peer support you could get in a classroom environment.
So, does technology result in the ____26____ of traditional classrooms and teachers? Guy Baron, head of modern languages at Aberystwyth University, thinks not. He told the BBC that apps should be used alongside classroom methods, not to ____27____ traditional teaching. And he adds: “The apps are very controversial ... they’re not designed for degrees, but they could be additional resources.”
Technology is going to contribute ____28____ in and outside the classroom. But attending a real lesson, facing a real teacher, probably forces you to be more ____29____.
When using an app, ____30____ can be a problem. But if you have a genuine and practical reason to learn another language, you will no doubt stick with it.

Section B (22’)
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
A
Proudly reading my words, I glanced around the room, only to find my classmates bearing big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes. Confused, I glanced toward my stone-faced teacher. Having no choice, I slowly raised the report I had slaved over, hoping to hide myself. “What could be causing everyone to act this way?”
Quickly, I flashed back to the day Miss Lancelot gave me the task. This was the first real task I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the internet and find information about a man named George Washington. Since my idea of history came from an ancient teacher in my home country, I had never heard of that name before. As I searched the name of this fellow, it became evident that there were two people bearing the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts, while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice: flip (掷) a coin. Heads — the commander, and tails — the peanuts guy. Ah! Tails, my report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver.
Weeks later, standing before this unfriendly mass, I was totally lost. Oh well, I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, “My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American Revolution.” The whole world became quiet! How could I know that she meant that George Washington?
Obviously, my grade was awful. Heartbroken but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to Miss Lancelot, but she insisted: No re-dos, no new grade. I felt that the punishment was not justified, and I believed I deserved a second chance. Consequently, I throw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, that chance unfolded as I found myself sitting in the headmaster’s office with my grandfather, now having an entirely different conversation. I smiled and flashed back to the embarrassing moment at the beginning of tho your as the headmaster informed me of my option to skip the sixth grade. Justice is sweet!
46. What did the author’s classmates think about his report?
A. Ridiculous. B. Controversial. C. Boring. D. Puzzling.
47. Why was the author confused about the task?

Study Smarter in College
In college, I encountered a rule of thumb: For every credit hour, you should be studying two to three hours outside of class per week.
Studying for long hours will often be necessary when you have an exam. But you don’t need to pull all-nighters to be a top student. Plus psychologists say a healthy amount of sleep will actually help you retain the material! If you ask a teacher or professor how much their best students should study, very few will expect their students to be studying for long hours every day. Spending an hour of self-studying will be enough to put you ahead of a lot of your peers.
“Studying all day” might mean going to class, reading 10 pages before lunch, doing a physics problem in between classes, and reviewing material at the end of the day. The hardest part can often be thinking of small things to do in order to fill your time during the day. You need to act smartly. Best students are the ones who find time to complete portions of the assignments well before it’s due.
A to-do-list item like “Write essay” is the kind of thing that will take long hours of work, but it can be broken into steps, like: write an outline, free write, revise your intro paragraph. Let’s talk about some of the study tips that I followed to clear even the toughest of the toughest examinations:
1. Prepare summary notes.
Topper students are not ahead of intelligence or mental skill. But they are ahead of time. They manage time so well that they won’t need to feel guilty after exams that they could have done better. Summary notes mainly incorporate all important definitions, points or flowcharts which are more likely to come in exams.
2. This might look opposite of what you have heard till now.
But studying for more hours is less productive and effective than studying for less time along with adequate breaks in between. Follow Pomodoro Technique.
3. Distractions.
They make you less productive and lazy. Keep a check on your distractions. Seriously, we don’t consider some of the minute things which actually are more time consuming. For example: Facebook will keep you sticking to its website and keep showing you funny videos, profile pictures, but remember one thing: Any of these things won’t make you a topper.
4. Writing.
Writing things down will help you remember them for a longer period. Write everything that can come in examinations. Attention: Your mind will try to tell you that there’s no need to write everything. But, you have to.
50. Which of the following is NOT a method recommended by the writer to make you a top student?
A. Making good use of time and accomplishing assignments ahead of the deadline.
B. Acting smartly, writing freely but not everything.
C. Summarizing important definitions, points or flowcharts on notes and reviewing them outside of class.
D. Trying to avoid distractions as much as possible.
51. According to the passage, what can we infer about Pomodoro Technique?
A. It may be opposite to our common sense and advises us to study longer.
B. It may be a learning technique invented by a scientist called Pomodoro.
C. It’s an effective learning method to encourage students to study longer hours.
D. It’s a technique to divide long hours into short sessions with breaks in between.
52. Where may you find this passage?
A. A leaflet about tips on college life prepared by the Students’ Union.
B. A fashion magazine for college students.
C. A section about time management in a newspaper.
D. Assignments requirement from a professor in college.
【答案】50. B 51. D 52. A

【51题详解】
推理判断题。根据原文第2点“But studying for more hours is less productive and effective than studying for less time along with adequate breaks in between. Follow Pomodoro Technique.(但是长时间学习的效率和效果不如短时间学习并且中间充分休息。试试番茄工作法)”可知,番茄工作法是将长时间学习拆分为多个短时学习时段,中间安排休息的学习方法。
【52题详解】
推理判断题。根据原文第四段“Let’s talk about some of the study tips that I followed to clear even the toughest of the toughest examinations(让我们聊聊我用来攻克最难考试的一些学习技巧)”及全文内容可知,文章给大学生提供大学学习与时间管理的建议。因此这篇文章最有可能出现在学生会制作的大学生活小贴士宣传单上。
The first thing we notice about new people are their faces. The next time we see these people, we remember them because we remember their faces. This seems like a simple process. However, scientists found that it is not such a simple process. The section of the brain that is responsible for face recognition seems to work differently for different people. Some people have great difficulty remembering and recognizing faces, while others almost never forget a face.
Normal babies are born with a natural ability to recognize faces. In fact, their face recognition abilities are much better than their parents. Babies are highly skilled at face recognition at six months. But by nine months, they lose this skill, By nine months, a baby’s face-recognition skills are about the same as an adult’s.
Unfortunately, some people are not born with this ability to recognize faces. The part of the brain that is responsible for face recognition doesn’t work for them. This condition is called face blindness. People with very severe face blindness cannot even recognize their own faces. In fact, people with this condition can sometimes be frightened when they look in the mirror. They don’t recognize their own face, so for a second they are startled when they see this unfamiliar face.
Face blindness is not always severe. Scientists believe up to 10 percent of the population may be affected by face blindness to some degree, yet many people with mild face blindness might not even know they have it. They have no reason to know they are different from anyone else until someone points it out. This is similar to people with color blindness.
Colorblind people can’t see the difference between certain colors such as red and green, until someone tells them that green and red are two different colors.
There is no cure for face blindness. So for the time being. people with face blindness need to find simple techniques to compensate for their problem. They can try to recognize people by their hairstyle, their voice, or their glasses. Hopefully, in the future as scientists learn more about this condition, they will find a cure.
53. The first paragraph is mainly about ____________.
A. the way to improve one’s face-recognition skills
B. the fact that some people have face-recognition problems
C. the simple process of the brain to recognize others’ faces
D. the importance of face recognition in human communication
54. When do people have the keen skills of face-recognition?
A. At birth. B. In adolescence.
C. Half a year old. D. Nine months old.
55. The bold word “startled” in the 3rd paragraph is closes in meaning to _______________.
A. confused B. surprised
C. excited D. depressed
56. What does the author think of the problem of face blindness?
A. People need to take it seriously. B. It affects a great number of people.
C. It can be cured in the near future. D. Certain techniques can make up for it.
【答案】53. B 54. C 55. B 56. D

Section C (8’)
Directions: read the following passage and choose the most suitable statement from A-F for each blank There are no extra statements, which you do not need.
Ten years ago, after two years as a postdoc (博士后), I found myself wondering whether I should take a different road. Up to that point, I had stuck to a pretty traditional path investigating cancer genetics, but I was losing interest in the research. At the same time, federal funding had flattened, which added to my dissatisfaction. _____57_____Then came the hard part: identifying a new career that would nurture my passion for science and allow me to make an impact with my work.
As I was considering my options, I found inspiration in my first graduate school research tutor, whose work reminded me that scientists’ efforts away from the bench can be incredibly powerful. But I still didn’t know exactly what I should do. _____58_____ A colleague mentioned that a professor at a nearby 2-year college was training students to produce monoclonal antibodies (单株抗体) for labs on campus. I was impressed that the professor had taken on this type of ambitious project with relatively inexperienced students. Curious to find out more, I set up a meeting with John and was struck by his sincerity and the way he prioritised student training above grants, publications, and personal ambition. I could also see his passion for teaching, which reminded me of the dream to become a high school biology teacher.
_____59_____ I found a faculty position and joined John at the same quiet junior college. Now, I effectively hold two positions: classroom instructor and research co-adviser of 15 inexperienced but eager undergraduates. Both roles give me a chance to help students transform themselves, which is enormously rewarding.
_____60_____ It’s discouraging when others see both my students and me as less worthy because we are not at universities. We sometimes struggle to get access to federal funding, scientific conferences, and other resources and opportunities. My pay is below the standard at 4-year research institutions, even though my teaching workload is greater. But my occasional frustration is relieved by the thought of the students, who I have helped train.
Looking back at these 10 years, I realise how much my work on this campus has helped me grow, both as an academic and a tutor. I’m grateful that I stepped away from a traditional career path and found a way to serve both the student and research communities in my own way, modest though it may be.
A. However, my work has its challenges.
B. Then a second bit of inspiration came my way.
C. Distressed as I was, I resolved to pursue my interest in research.
D. Besides the spiritual reward, there are other less apparent benefits.
E. So I decided to leave the academic path to find a better match.
F. Here, at last, was a way to combine my interest in science with my passion for teaching.
【答案】57. E 58. B 59. F 60. A

【答案】
We should express our views based on facts, rather than blindly approve or oppose them.
【解析】
【详解】“应该做某事”表达为should do sth.,“发表我们的观点”表达为express our views;“以……为基础”的动词固定搭配为base sth. on sth.,此处views和base是被动关系,作定语修饰views,故用过去分词based;“而不是”表达为rather than,连接并列的谓语动词,形式和前面的express保持一致,用动词原形;“盲目地”表达为blindly,为副词,修饰其后的动词approve“赞成”和oppose“反对”。

_____________________________________________________________________
【答案】

I’m writing to share my experience as a volunteer and what I gained from it.
Last month, I volunteered at a community library. My job was to help children find books and organize the shelves. At first, I felt a bit nervous, but the children’s bright smiles soon put me at ease. When a little girl thanked me for finding her favorite storybook, I felt a strong sense of satisfaction.

A fine arts major, Jimmy had already become a successful artist by the early 1990s. _____31_____, his life also had its ups and downs. In 1995, two years after quitting his job at an advertising agency, Jimmy was diagnosed with life-threatening leukaemia (白血病). Because of this severe blow, all of the things that had looked unimportant before became _____32_____ and all of the things that had been important to him in the past became less so. He suddenly realised that _____33_____ was not only a means of making a living, but also a channel through which he could demonstrate how he thought about life. Certainly, such a(n) _____34_____ added intensity to his work and permanently influenced his career.
Actually, the artist’s picture books seem to be intended more for adult readers than for children. Unlike comic books, his works do not _____35_____ words to tell stories. Instead, images with bright colours and simple lines play the primary role in _____36_____ his feelings and thoughts. “You can understand what I am trying to say in my books without reading the text that comes with the images,” says the artist, who always feels embarrassed when he is _____37_____ as a comic-book author. Nonetheless, the text, though usually quite short, has its _____38_____. As a story develops in a series of interconnected images, the short sentences placed alongside them can easily intensify the readers’ _____39_____, which involve no sudden awakening but pure emotions of joy and sadness caused by trivial matters. These matters are typically _____40_____ in our busy modern society, but magnified creatively through Jimmy’s drawing pen.
Had it not been for the close contact with _____41_____ in his early thirties that gave him new insights into life and art, Jimmy might not have enjoyed such a great deal of success. Today, he has published over twenty best-selling picture books, many of which are also _____42_____ in German, Japanese, Italian and Greek. His success owed much to his simple _____43_____ for drawing and to the feelings his works inspire. “I’m a child living in the body of a middle-aged man,” he says. For an artist like Jimmy, who always keeps a low profile, beauty lies in _____44_____ and in the sweet innocence of childhood. Undoubtedly, this is the _____45_____ behind the lasting charm of Jimmy’s picture books.

A. He was new at the school.

A. annoyed B. eager C. ready D. ashamed
49. In the end, the author turned things around ________.
A. by redoing his task
B. under the guidance of his headmaster
C. with the help of his grandfather
D. through his own efforts
