Inspired by an event held by the Dallas-based Daddy Stroller (婴儿车) Social Club (DSSC), a group for fathers, Brandon Shaw wrote an 83-page typed letter to his father. From the Blacklit bookstore, Kalvin Bridgewater led 15 dads, including his own father, who was seated next to Shaw, in an emotional event where the men dug into what they hated, loved, misunderstood and appreciated about their fathers as they grew up.
Founded by Bridgewater in 2021, DSSC initially met with about 30 dads per event but skyrocketed in popularity after two online videos became hits in April 2024. It now attracts over 150 dads at events, where fathers bond over shared experiences and provide emotional backing for one another.
DSSC's appeal is broad, attracting dads from various professions, including doctors, engineers, and electricians. The group emphasizes emotional support, with members regularly checking in on one another. As Shaw shared, the group provides a space where men can be open, asking, "How are you feeling?" Shaw, who joined the group when he first became a father, said it has made him more patient and understanding.
Bridgewater, who became a certified doula (产妇陪护师) to better support his wife through pregnancy (孕期), also ensures DSSC allows partners some time for themselves. At a May event, scheduled just before Mother's Day, mothers had the day off while fathers spent time bonding with their children.
Brandon Shaw described the experience as transformative, saying it helped him connect with his own weaknesses, something he had previously kept hidden. He sent the letter he wrote to his father for Father's Day. It arrives soon. He said he doesn't expect a response and just hopes his father reads it. As Bridgewater puts it, fatherhood is just about “being honest and sharing”.
24. What can be inferred about DSSC from the first two paragraphs?
A. It creates a group of father influencers.
B. It repairs broken father-son relationships.
C. It promotes fathers' emotional well-being.
D. It highlights fathers' vital role in childcare.
25. What makes DSSC appealing?
A. Parenting instructions. B. Good childcare service.
C. Supportive atmosphere. D. Diverse member backgrounds.
26. Why is the May event mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To illustrate another aim of DSSC.
B. To justify the founder's personal experience.
C. To stress the importance of DSSC.
D. To show an ideal husband-wife relationship.
27 What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. The severity of parental issues.
B. DSSC's influence on its members.
C. The necessity to identify weaknesses.
D. Bridgewater's devotion to fatherhood.

The curb cut (下斜路缘). It’s a convenience that most of us rarely, if ever, notice. Yet, without it, daily life might be a lot harder—in more ways than one. Pushing a baby stroller onto the curb, skateboarding onto a sidewalk or taking a full grocery cart from the sidewalk to your car—all these tasks are easier because of the curb cut.
But it was created with a different purpose in mind.
It’s hard to imagine today, but back in the 1970s, most sidewalks in the United States ended with a sharp drop-off. That was a big deal for people in wheelchairs because there were no ramps (斜坡) to help them move along city blocks without assistance. According to one disability rights leader, a six-inch curb “might as well have been Mount Everest”. So, activists from Berkeley, California, who also needed wheelchairs, organized a campaign to create tiny ramps at intersections to help people dependent on wheels move up and down curbs independently.
I think about the “curb cut effect” a lot when working on issues around health equity (公平). The first time I even heard about the curb cut was in a 2017 Stanford Social Innovation Review piece by PolicyLink CEO Angela Blackwell. Blackwell rightly noted that many people see equity “as a zero-sum game.” Basically, that there is a “prejudiced societal suspicion that intentionally supporting one group hurts another.” What the curb cut effect shows though, Blackwell said, is that “when society creates the circumstances that allow those who have been left behind to participate and contribute fully, everyone wins.”
There are multiple examples of this principle at work. For example, investing in policies that create more living-wage jobs or increase the availability of affordable housing certainly benefits people in communities that have limited options. But, the action also empowers those people with opportunities for better health and the means to become contributing members of society—and that benefits everyone. Even the football huddle (围成一团以秘密商讨) was initially created to help deaf football players at Gallaudet College keep their game plans secret from opponents who could have read their sign language. Today, it’s used by every team to shield the opponent from learning about game-winning strategies.
So, next time you cross the street, or roll your suitcase through a crosswalk or ride your bike directly onto a sidewalk—think about how much the curb cut, that change in design that broke down walls of exclusion for one group of people at a disadvantage, has helped not just that group, but all of us.
28. By “might as well have been Mount Everest” (paragraph 3), the disability rights leader implies that a six-inch curb may become ________.
A. as famous as the world’s highest mountain
B. an almost impassable barrier
C. a connection between people
D. a most unforgettable matter
29. According to Angela Blackwell, many people believe that ________.
A. it’s fair to give the disadvantaged more help than others
B. it’s impossible to have everyone be treated equally
C. it’s necessary to go all out to help the disabled
D. it’s not worthwhile to promote health equity
30. Which of the following examples best illustrates the “curb cut effect” principle?
A. Spaceflight designs are applied to life on earth.
B. Four great inventions of China spread to the west.
C. Christopher Columbus discovered the new world.
D. Classic literature got translated into many languages.
31. What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?
A. Everyday items are originally invented for people with disabilities.
B. Everyone in a society should pursue what is in his or her interest.
C. A disability rights leader changed the life of his fellow men.
D. Caring for disadvantaged groups may finally benefit all.
D
For some readers, a dictionary opens up a world. Dictionaries contain multiple pleasures, such as settling word-game wars by turning actual pages. For the rest, a dictionary is either outdated or strictly online. In 2012, Encyclopaedia Britannica stopped printing new editions, going digital-only.
In his book, Unabridged: The Thrill of (and Threat to) the Modern Dictionary, American journalist Stefan Fatsis writes of the shift brought about by our decade-old dependence on search engines: “Definitions, good and bad, were a click away, and most people didn’t care or couldn’t tell which was which: expert research, scraped data, zombie (僵尸) websites, whatever popped up in a search.”
When I was a child, I loved dictionaries, and so did every sensible parent in Calcutta. If your child was literate, one of the 20 volumes of the Oxford English Dictionary or an illustratedCollins was the surest way to keep them happily occupied, setting them off on hunts for lost or forgotten words.
Fatsis sees dictionary-making as “a human endeavor (努力) stretching back to the third millennium BCE”. From the Akkadians to Sanskrit scholars, what dictionary makers hoped to do went far beyond the already tricky task of writing definitions: their job was to explain and track “the endless shifts in language”.
Change is inevitable, though Fatsis also asks what we lose in the name of convenience. He writes, “the job of the dictionary was firmly established… By the time I finished this book, it wasn’t clear how much longer flesh-bone-and-blood lexicographers would be needed to document the march of the English language. Between traditional search engines and AI-enhanced search through LLMs (large language models), the way we look up words, and find meaning in language itself, has changed.”
We can’t claim that humanity still needs physical dictionaries. Like encyclopedias and atlases, the best of them have long moved online. Indeed, the starting points of most search engines were the encyclopedias and dictionaries compiled (编纂) by experts. But I plan to hold on to my beloved, dog-eared physical dictionaries — such priceless time capsules, one of the last paradises of freedom from the endless scroll of digital content.
32. What has reduced people’s reliance on physical dictionaries?
A. The decline of the print media.
B. The convenience of online lookup.
C. People’s indifference to accuracy.
D. Publishers’ insistence on going digital.
33. What can we infer about the future of real-life lexicographers?
A. Their workload will double.
B. They will remain in demand.
C. Their existence is threatened.
D. They need to upgrade their skills.
34. Why does the author stick to physical dictionaries?
A. They boost long-term memory.
B. They last longer than digital files.
C. They offer an escape from screens.
D. They give more authoritative definitions.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Word in Favor of Dictionaries
B. My Love for Looking up Words
C. A Best-seller on the Theme of Change
D. Human Endeavors in Dictionary-making

When I landed in a small town in New Zealand as an exchange student, I thought I was ready for everything — new faces, language barriers, strange social patterns and even homesickness. Still, the smallest things made me feel out of place.
Luckily, the Wilsons, my host family, did everything they could to help me settle in — driving me around, sharing meals, and even letting me use their kitchen when. I. missed Chinese food. With their warmth and support, everything seemed to fall into place.
But at school, small moments felt bigger than I’d imagined. In our first literature class, we discussed a Hemingway story. Everyone jumped in actively, while I struggled to speak up. My desk-mate encouraged me, “Next time, just speak up.” I nodded, forcing a bitter smile.
And just like that, I found myself in another cultural trap, Mrs. Wilson’s birthday dinner. At the table, I answered politely but kept mostly to myself. Mrs. Wilson noticed my silence and gently asked, “You alright, sweet girl? You’ re so quiet tonight.” My face reddened. Was my silence seen as cold, rather than polite?
That night restless and wide awake, I wondered if I needed to laugh louder, speak faster; or hide parts of myself just to feel I belonged. Questions flooded my mind, none with answers.
A few days later, our teacher announced there would be a Culture Festival next week. “You’ ll prepare a stand to share your own culture — food, crafts, customs ... anything meaningful. You can not only display your culture but also make it interactive, allowing people to try new things, learn traditional skills. or share stories and cultural symbols,” she said. The class lit up with excitement. I sat frozen, mind racing: how could I share my traditions in English? The thought made my stomach twisted (扭曲). Yet, I gathered myself with a deep breath and signed up. After that, I threw myself wholeheartedly into preparations, until the day finally came.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
At the Culture Festival, I stood behind my stand, nervous but ready.

27. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. The severity of parental issues.
B. DSSC's influence on its members.
C. The necessity to identify weaknesses.
D. Bridgewater's devotion to fatherhood.
C 25. C 26. A 27. B
根据第一段“Brandon Shaw wrote an 83-page typed letter to his father. From the Blacklit bookstore, Kalvin Bridgewater led 15 dads, including his own father, who was seated next to Shaw, in an emotional event where the men dug into what they hated, loved, misunderstood and appreciated about their fathers as they grew up(布兰登・肖给他的父亲写了一封83页的打印信。
根据第三段“DSSC’s appeal is broad, attracting dads from various professions, including doctors, engineers, and electricians. The group emphasizes emotional support, with members regularly checking in on one another. As Shaw shared, the group provides a space where men can be open, asking, “How are you feeling?”(DSSC 的吸引力很广泛,吸引了来自不同职业的父亲,包括医生、工程师和电工。该组织强调情感支持,成员们定期相互问候。正如肖所说,这个组织提供了一个让男性可以敞开心扉的空间,问“你感觉怎么样?)”可知,DSSC吸引人的地方在于它提供了一个相互支持的氛围,让父亲们能够获得情感上的支持。故选C项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Bridgewater, who became a certified doula (产妇陪护师) to better support his wife through pregnancy (孕期), also ensures DSSC allows partners some time for themselves. At a May event, scheduled just before Mother's Day, mothers had the day off while fathers spent time bonding with their children(布里奇沃特成为了一名认证的产妇陪护师,以便在妻子怀孕期间更好地支持她,他还确保DSSC为伴侣们留出一些属于他们自己的时间。在母亲节前夕安排的一场五月份的活动中,母亲们休息一天,而父亲们则花时间与孩子们建立联系)”可知,DSSC为伴侣们留出一些属于他们自己的时间。在母亲节前夕安排的一场五月份的活动中,母亲们休息一天,可推理出提到五月份的活动是为了说明DSSC的另一个目标,即让伴侣们有自己的时间,同时也让父亲们有机会和孩子建立联系。故选A项。
根据最后一段“Brandon Shaw described the experience as transformative, saying it helped him connect with his own weaknesses, something he had previously kept hidden. He sent the letter he wrote to his father for Father’s Day. It arrives soon. He said he doesn’t expect a response and just hopes his father reads it. As Bridgewater puts it, fatherhood is just about “being honest and sharing(布兰登・肖形容这段经历具有变革性,他说这帮助他正视了自己的弱点,而这些弱点他以前一直隐藏着。他把为父亲节写给他父亲的信寄了出去。信很快就会到。他说他不期望得到回复,只希望他的父亲能读一读。正如布里奇沃特所说,为人父就是“诚实和分享”)”可知,最后一段主要讲述了DSSC对成员布兰登・肖的影响,让他能够正视自己的弱点。故选B项。
C
D Caring for disadvantaged groups may finally benefit all.
B 29. B 30. A 31. D
根据第三段第二三句“That was a big deal for people in wheelchairs because there were no ramps (斜坡) to help them move along city blocks without assistance. According to one disability rights leader, a six-inch curb “might as well have been Mount Everest”. (这对坐轮椅的人来说是一件大事,因为没有斜坡可以帮助他们在没有帮助的情况下沿着城市街区移动。一位残疾人权益领袖表示,6英寸长的路缘“就像珠穆朗玛峰一样”。)”可知,没有斜坡,6英寸长的路缘对于坐轮椅的人来说是一个几乎无法逾越的障碍。故选B。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段第三四句“Blackwell rightly noted that many people see equity “as a zero-sum game.” Basically, that there is a “prejudiced societal suspicion that intentionally supporting one group hurts another.” (布莱克威尔正确地指出,许多人将公平视为“零和游戏”。基本上,有一种“有偏见的社会怀疑,故意支持一个群体伤害另一个群体。”)”可知,零和游戏是一方得益一方受损的局面,布莱克威尔指出很多人把下斜路缘的设计认为是零和游戏,也即是认为这是不可能实现的公平。故选B。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段末句“What the curb cut effect shows though, Blackwell said, is that “when society creates the circumstances that allow those who have been left behind to participate and contribute fully, everyone wins.” (然而,布莱克威尔说,下斜路缘效应表明,“当社会创造条件,允许那些被落下的人充分参与和贡献,每个人都是赢家。”)”第五段前三句“There are multiple examples of this principle at work. For example, investing in policies that create more living-wage jobs or increase the availability of affordable housing certainly benefits people in communities that have limited options. But, the action also empowers those people with opportunities for better health and the means to become contributing members of society—and that benefits everyone.
D Publishers’ insistence on going digital.
33. What can we infer about the future of real-life lexicographers?
A. Their workload will double.
B. They will remain in demand.
C. Their existence is threatened.
D. They need to upgrade their skills.
34. Why does the author stick to physical dictionaries?
A. They boost long-term memory.
B. They last longer than digital files.
C. They offer an escape from screens.
D. They give more authoritative definitions.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Word in Favor of Dictionaries
B. My Love for Looking up Words
C. A Best-seller on the Theme of Change
D. Human Endeavors in Dictionary-making

根据第二段“In his book, Unabridged: The Thrill of (and Threat to) the Modern Dictionary, American journalist Stefan Fatsis writes of the shift brought about by our decade-old dependence on search engines: “Definitions, good and bad, were a click away, and most people didn’t care or couldn’t tell which was which: expert research, scraped data, zombie (僵尸) websites, whatever popped up in a search.”(美国记者斯蒂芬·法特西斯在其著作《未删节本:现代词典的诱惑与威胁》中,记述了人类对搜索引擎长达十年的依赖所带来的变革:“无论是精良的释义还是粗劣的诠释,皆可一键获取。绝大多数人对此毫不在意,抑或无力辨别——专业研究、抓取数据、僵尸网站,凡是搜索所得皆照单全收。”)”可知,网络搜索的便捷性使人们只需点击一下就能获取定义,从而减少了对纸质词典的依赖。故选B项。
【33题详解】

【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是最后一段“We can’t claim that humanity still needs physical dictionaries. Like encyclopedias and atlases, the best of them have long moved online. Indeed, the starting points of most search engines were the encyclopedias and dictionaries compiled (编纂) by experts. But I plan to hold on to my beloved, dog-eared physical dictionaries — such priceless time capsules, one of the last paradises of freedom from the endless scroll of digital content.(我们无法断言人类仍需要实体词典。 故选A项。

Should Community Service be a Requirement for Graduation?

That night, restless and wide awake, I wondered if I needed to laugh louder, speak faster; or hide parts of myself just to feel I belonged.

At the Culture Festival, I stood behind my stand, nervous but ready. Taking a deep breath, I once again neatly arranged all the well-prepared items: red paper and scissors. Soon, students and teachers gathered, curiosity in their eyes. I welcomed them with a smile and demonstrated: fold, cut, unfold — and a butterfly spread its wings. A wave of surprise rippled through the crowd. Encouraged, I invited a boy to try; his star turned out uneven, yet drew laughter and applause. More joined eagerly, and I moved among them, guiding their hands, praising their efforts and celebrating each creation. When a teacher proudly held up her paper flower, the cheers grew louder. Red pieces fell to the floor, and my confidence, once hidden, shone through every new pattern.
From that day on, my world here started to change. In the hallway, students waved butterflies from my stand and greeted me with bright “Ni hao!” My heart lifted as I waved back. In literature class, I gave voice to my ideas with newfound confidence. My English was not flawless, yet my voice was steady, and instead of silence I saw nods and smiles. After class, a girl asked softly, “Can you show us more about your culture?” Her words lingered in my heart, echoing like a gentle reminder. In that echo, I realized I had not only broken free from cultural shock but also found my place in a shared story — one written by many voices, yet open enough to hold my own.
