Leo loved spending hours on games and movies. His mum noted this and came up with a family challenge (挑战) on a Saturday morning. “Let’s spend less time on our screens. We can set goals. Whoever reaches them can choose the family activity for next weekend,” she explained.
Leo enjoyed family activities, so he asked, “What if I don’t succeed?” Mum smiled and said, “It’s not about winning or losing. It’s about discovering new things and spending time together. Also, it’ll be fun!” Leo thought about it and nodded.
The family wrote down what they would do on a poster board. Leo decided to spend only one hour on screens each day. His dad loved watching football games, and he planned to play football that week. His little sister, Mia, wanted to build a big “fort (城堡)”. And his mum wanted to try some new dishes from a cookbook.
During the week, Leo discovered some forgotten joys. He helped Mia build her “fort”, laughing as they read stories inside. He played football with his dad in the park and learnt to cook from his mum. Once feeling bored, he almost picked up his phone, but Mum reminded him of their challenge. Finally, they had a chess game night.
By Saturday, the family celebrated their success. “We all did a great job! I think we should keep some of the new habits,” Mum said. “Let’s have screen-free weekends in the future!” Everyone agreed happily. For Leo, although screens could be fun, spending time with family was much better.

Cockatoos are common birds in Australia. They are known for solving problems and learning from each other. They can open dustbin lids (垃圾箱盖) to find food inside. Scientists also found cockatoos knew how to drink from drinking fountains (喷泉式饮水器).
Dr Barbara Klump, a scientist, once noticed a cockatoo drinking from a fountain. She thought someone left the water running by mistake. But after watching a video (视频), she realized the bird actually turned on the fountain by itself. Dr Klump and her team decided to study cockatoos. They marked 24 cockatoos and set up two cameras (照相机) near a drinking fountain the birds used often. During over 44 days, the cameras recorded 14 hours of video, showing 525 times when the birds used the fountain.
The scientists found about 70% of the cockatoos in the area tried to use the fountain. Every bird did it a little differently, but they all used at least one foot to turn on the fountain. The cockatoos didn’t always succeed and they only got water in about 41% of their tries. They had an especially hard time when they were in a hurry or when other cockatoos were trying to use the fountain at the same time.
The scientists aren’t exactly sure why cockatoos drink from drinking fountains. Maybe the clean water tastes better than the water from a river. Or maybe drinking from fountains makes cockatoos feel safer, as it helps them better watch for eagles. Dr Klump guessed cockatoos just like the fun of making the fountains work!
Cockatoos seem to get used to city life easily. The scientists say they can’t wait to find out what skills the birds will learn next!
( ) 56. What does the first paragraph mainly talk about?
A. Cockatoos’ abilities. B. Cockatoos’ living area. C. Cockatoos’ eating habits.
( ) 57. Which question does the second paragraph answer?
A. Who left the water running by mistake?
B. How did Dr Klump’s team study the cockatoos?
C. When did Dr Klump get interested in cockatoos?
( ) 58. What did the result of the study show?
A. The cockatoos often hurried to use the fountain.
B. Half of the cockatoos got water from the fountain.
C. Each cockatoo had its own way of using the fountain.
( ) 59. Which are the possible (可能的) reasons why cockatoos drink from drinking fountains?
① The water has a better taste. ② The activity brings them joy.
③ The activity keeps them safe. ④ The fountains are easier to use.
A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①②④
( ) 60. What is the purpose (目的) of the text?
A. To encourage us to protect cockatoos. B. To show that cockatoos are clever birds.
C. To tell us to learn more about cockatoos.

Do you enjoy planting flowers with your family? Do you know how to make your garden more beautiful? Many people may say sure. Sunlight and water, of course! However, there is another surprising key helping you to grow happy and healthy plants. That is music!
According to a study, listening to music can affect plant growth. It shows that plants grow faster, with larger flowers and healthier leaves when they listen to music. Also, different kinds of music even have different influences (影响) on plants.
How can this happen? In fact, plants don’t hear sounds like humans do, but they can feel vibrations (震动) from sounds. These sound vibrations can help plants grow like wind or water.
Then, what kinds of music do plants like better? Chris Beardshaw, a famous expert in gardening, once did some research on this. He discovered that classical music improved plant growth, and that heavy metal music also helped grow healthier plants. However, he found that rock music might cause plants to die. So be careful with the kinds of music when you play music in your garden.
In a word, the study showed that plants like rhythmic (有节奏的) music better, especially classical music and heavy metal music. Actually, it’s not easy to understand what music plants like better. That’s because it also depends on (取决于) the kinds of plants, the kinds of music, and the areas where plants grow. In order to build a bridge between music and plant growth, people need to do more research.
Whether (是否) or not plants truly like music, you can play music in your garden, especially when you work there. At the very least, music can make you enjoy the work more.

A group in Chengdu, Sichuan Province developed an indoor planting system (系统). It helps people living in the apartment grow fresh vegetables and fruits at home easily.
The smart planting system uses high technology to take care of plants. The device (装置) is small. It takes up just 0.25 square metres of floor space but can grow up to 30 kinds of plants at the same time. It uses special lights as sunlight, so plants grow well even indoors. It controls (控制) water, light, and nutrients (养分) for plants all by itself. This makes growing food easy, even if you don’t have much experience. Compared with ancient farming, this system helps plants grow much faster, and stops them from getting sick.
Liu Shahe, an early user, shared her experience online. She said the smart device made her home gardening dream come true even though she travels a lot. She loves the system because it’s helpful and easy to use. She can grow many different plants with it. She even makes hotpot with her home-grown vegetables.
A recent report shows that the market for smart indoor gardens is growing quickly. More and more people in cities want to feel closer to nature and eat healthy food. Smart gardens make this possible by giving people a healthy and easy way to grow food. So, smart indoor garden systems will become even more popular in the future. They give us a new way to bring nature into our homes and enjoy fresh, healthy food all year round.

Rabbits and hares have something in common—they both love eating plants. However, hares mainly eat grass, while rabbits feed on vegetables like cabbages and carrots. However, they look different. Hares have longer ears and legs than rabbits. For this reason, they run faster. What’s more, their personalities are also different. Hares are often wild and shy. Rabbits are more friendly and playful.
Both rabbits and hares play an important role. Many people keep rabbits as pets, and they bring people lots of joy. As for hares, they can help keep the ecosystem balanced.

四、听短文,根据短文内容完成图表中所缺信息。短文念三遍。
Do you want to become a “better you”? It’s easier than you think! You just need to make small changes. Here are some good ideas.
First, you should have some small goals. Goals are things you want to do. It’s easier to reach small goals. For example, you can read one book every week or play the guitar for 30 minutes daily. After you choose a goal, you should write down how to do it. When you reach your goals, you’ll feel happy.
Second, trying new things helps you grow. You can read books, learn to cook or take art classes. Maybe you will find something you are really interested in.
Third, find a sport you like, such as dancing, swimming, or running. Exercise isn’t just about getting fit. It can also make you feel happier.
Last, you should be kind to yourself. Everyone makes mistakes. Don’t be disappointed when you don’t do something well. Think, “What can I learn from this?” Then try again.
Remember, becoming a “better you” is a journey, not a race. It takes time and practice. Keep trying, and you will improve!
