The first and most important step is to start the conversation politely. When you ask for directions, the way you make your request can make a difference to the reply you receive. When we were young, we always listened to others’ decisions for different reasons. This may seem to make things easier, but it also leads to missing chances.
I still remember that when I was an 8-year-old boy, I always asked my parents, friends and teachers for help. Being afraid of doing something wrong, I seldom made decisions by myself. I asked myself many times, “What should I do? Should I always depend on others?”
However, I began to change after I became a high school student. It was when I decided to join in the School Singing Competition. Even though it was so hard to give a great performance, I took the chance and practiced hard for the competition. Then the day came soon.
My heart beat fast because it was the first time that I had sung in public. When I opened my mouth, the voice was clear and sweet. Luckily, I won first prize. I was happy with myself for the first time. I realized that if I wanted to make my life full, I had to take each chance.
From then on, I was not afraid to meet difficulties. Take the following thing as an example. When it came to the courses, I used to choose those without any challenges. But I took a difficult science course this time. I know that as long as I try hard, I can still get a good grade in the exam.
“Life is about taking up the things you are not good at,” my mother told me. Now I know that things will become easier with hard work and every chance I take.

Hello! Thank you for that warm welcome. It makes me smile! I smile a lot these days, but in fact, I used to be a real downer. I knew this because my friend Sarah told me so. She said seeing me would ruin (破坏) her day because I was always complaining (抱怨) about something. She told me that my negative (消极的) thoughts got her down. That was a shock, but it did me good because it showed me that I needed to change.
I started doing small and simple things to raise my spirits-listening to a great piece of music while getting dressed, having a cup of coffee and a cookie in the afternoon, and sticking (粘贴) an encouraging saying on the fridge so that it was the first thing I saw every morning.
Then I used the same idea to help brighten up others’ lives. I just did simple acts of kindness, like cooking a meal for my mom, helping a neighbor find her lost cat or saying a few words of encouragement to my younger brother for something he was doing. A little bit of kindness can really make someone’s day.
So here’s my big idea for how to change the world—think small. By doing small things, we are sure to make the world a better place. Thank you for listening.
