Do you know Norway’s “russefeiring” celebration? High school seniors across Norway participate in this unique tradition. It’s a large-scale, four-week-long celebration marking the end of 13 years of school before the transition to higher education. It begins at the end of April and goes on until May 17. This tradition dates back to the 1900s, though it has evolved (进化) significantly ever since.
I just experienced a “russefeiring”. It started with a ceremony, where we had to drink a carbonated beverage (碳酸饮料) under 10 seconds. I didn’t make it, so my friends poured the rest over my head, leaving me totally wet. After that, I wore my “russedress”, a traditional outfit for graduates. It was bright red, with patches (补丁). I spent hours decorating it, painting my favorite bands on it and adding patches for all the places I’d visited.
Some students went further, forming big groups with their own logos, stickers and even party songs. They saved money for years to buy and fixed up old buses into party buses. I remember seeing one with a DJ and a mini-bar inside — it was like a moving club. They drove around town, stopping at all the major parties with loud music. It was like a scene from a movie.
The celebration peaked on May 17, Norway’s national day. We joined parades, gave out our business cards and celebrated the end of our school journey. We partied all night, dancing and laughing with friends. But as dawn broke, reality struck: in just a few days, we’d be sitting for our national exams. It was a reminder that the party was over, and real life was about to begin.
4. What can we learn about Norway’s “russefeiring”?
A. It lasts for three weeks. B. It is a celebration for college graduates.
C. It has stayed the same since it began. D. It has been in existence for at least decades.
5. How did students make their “russefeiring” special?
A. By changing old buses into moving party places.
B. By creating logos to print on business cards.
C. By practicing party songs to perform for peers.
D. By painting their favorite travel spots on outfits.
6. What would students do after the “russefeiring” peak on May 17?
A. They’d immediately start their college life.
B. They’d take national exams in a short while.
C. They’d plan another party to extend the celebration.
D. They’d give away their “russedresses”.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Experience of Norway’s National Day parade
B. The History of Traditional Celebrations in Norway
C. A Special Celebration for Norwegian High School Seniors
D. How Norwegian Students Transform Old Buses

Chinese swimmer Pan Zhanle, a rising star in the swimming world, is bringing new glory to China. At China’s National Swimming Championships in April 2024, Pan won the gold in the men’s 100m freestyle final with an amazing time of 46.97 seconds. By the end of the event, Pan had taken home a total of seven golds, showing his exceptional performance.
Pan’s success has brought much hope to China’s men’s 100m freestyle, a field long led by European and US swimmers. He appeared on the global stage as the first Asian swimmer to finish the 100m within 47 seconds. Over the past seven months, he has achieved this three times, which include a new Asian record of 46.97 seconds at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou and a new world record of 46.80 seconds at the Doha 2024 World Aquatics Championships. So far, only eight swimmers worldwide have managed to break the 47-second mark, placing Pan among the tops.
The 48-second barrier was once a significant challenge for Asian swimmers, but Pan has shown it can be overcome. His teammate Wang Haoyu also swam within 48 seconds, with a time of 47.89 seconds in March 2023. Coach Xing Chao noted that at the Tokyo Olympics, China competed in nearly all swimming events except the men’s 4×100m freestyle relay. Now, with Pan and Wang, who can both swim under 48 seconds, the team’s strength has greatly increased for such relay events.
In an interview, Pan has clearly expressed his desire to make winning a habit. “Breaking the world record was a natural outcome,” he shared, “I want to raise the standard even further, making it challenging for others to surpass.” His determination highlights his continuous pursuit of excellence and his goal to keep pushing limits in the sport, inspiring many young athletes.
8. How does the writer show Pan Zhanle’s achievements in the first two paragraphs?
A. By listing numbers. B. By making comparisons.
C. By quoting comments. D. By analyzing results.
9. What is a fact about China’s men’s 4×100m freestyle relay?
A. It has long been led by Asian swimmers.
B. It only needs players who swim under 47 seconds.
C. It has become more competitive with Pan and Wang.
D. It was one of China’s events at the Tokyo Olympics.
10. Which of the following best describes Pan Zhanle according to paragraph 4?
A. Modest. B. Ambitious. C. Cautious. D. Independent.
11. What’s the purpose of the passage?
A To introduce Pan’s recent achievements.
B. To encourage young people to swim.
C. To explain the history of Chinese swimming.
D. To highlight Pan’s influence and potential.
D
Wildfires are becoming more serious around the world as the climate warms. This is mainly caused by increasing heat, drought, and strong winds, which make trees burn more easily. However, Rebecca Koll, a researcher at the University of Exeter, doubts there’s another reason. She believes climate change is actually changing the plants themselves. Koll suggests that stress from increased ultraviolet radiation (紫外线辐射,UV) makes trees produce more airborne (空气传播的) chemicals, called volatiles (挥发物), in their leaves. Studies have shown that high levels of these volatiles can increase the chance of pine trees catching fire.
To test her idea, Koll ran a strictly-designed experiment. She put 87 different pine tree species under higher levels of UV radiation in special climate-controlled rooms. These trees were kept in ideal conditions with perfect temperature and enough water, but they received up to three times the UV exposure found in today’s climate. Koll vividly described the process: “They’re having the best life. Except we’re just absolutely zapping them with radiation.” After several weeks, the trees were analyzed to check the changes in their leaf chemistry and then burned to see how easily they catch fire.
Koll expects to find changes in the plants’ leaf chemistry and believes these changes will make the trees easier to burn. This research could help explain why wildfires are getting worse. “It’s not just drought,” Koll says, “we are changing plants through climate effects.” Discovering this answer could valuably improve our understanding of wildfire risks in pine forests, which are common in the northern half of the earth.
This project is one of the first conducted at the University of Exeter’s new Global Meteorological Simulator, a facility designed to study how plants cope with rapid climate change. Matthew Robson, another expert, finds this research particularly exciting because the importance of leaf chemistry in how easily trees can catch fire has not yet been well-studied.
12. What is Koll’s idea about wild fire causes
A. There are only three reasons for the increasing wildfires.
B. Increased UV radiation may make trees more likely to burn.
C. Chemicals in trees’ leaves don’t affect their burning chance.
D. Drought and strong winds cause changes in outdoor plants.
13. What does the underlined word “zapping” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Protecting. B. Watering. C. Cutting. D. Exposing.
14. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Expected findings and research value. B. Experiment process and challenges.
C. Conclusions about wildfire causes. D. Discoveries of wildfire risks in forests.
15. Why is Matthew Robson excited by Koll’s research?
A. It centers around pine trees. B. It applies a new research method.
C. It addresses wildfire problems. D. It advances an understudied area.

【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍研究者Rebecca Koll关于野火加剧原因的新观点,以及为验证该观点所做的实验和研究价值。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中的“Koll suggests that stress from increased ultraviolet radiation (紫外线辐射,UV) makes trees produce more airborne (空气传播的) chemicals, called volatiles (挥发物), in their leaves. Studies have shown that high levels of these volatiles can increase the chance of pine trees catching fire.(Koll认为,紫外线辐射(UV)增强带来的压力会使树木在叶片中产生更多空气传播的化学物质,称为挥发物。研究表明,高水平的这些挥发物会增加松树着火的几率。)”可知,Koll认为紫外线辐射增强可能会使树木更容易燃烧。故选B项。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中的“These trees were kept in ideal conditions with perfect temperature and enough water, but they received up to three times the UV exposure found in today’s climate. Koll vividly described the process: “They’re having the best life. Except we’re just absolutely zapping them with radiation.”(这些树木被置于理想环境中,温度适宜且水分充足,但它们受到的紫外线辐射量高达当今气候下的三倍。Koll生动地描述了这个过程:“它们过着极为舒适的生活。除了我们一直在用辐射持续zapping它们之外。”)”可知,它们受到的紫外线辐射量高达当今气候下的三倍,所以不被照射,树木会过着极为舒适的生活。“zapping”意为“照射”,与“Exposing”(暴露、照射)同义。故选D项。
【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段中的“Koll expects to find changes in the plants’ leaf chemistry and believes these changes will make the trees easier to burn. This research could help explain why wildfires are getting worse... Discovering this answer could valuably improve our understanding of wildfire risks in pine forests (Koll期望发现植物叶片化学物质的变化,并认为这些变化会使树木更容易燃烧。这项研究可能有助于解释为什么野火越来越严重……找到这个答案将极大地增进我们对松林火灾风险的理解)”可知,该段主要讲述了实验的预期发现以及研究的价值。故选A项。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Matthew Robson, another expert, finds this research particularly exciting because the importance of leaf chemistry in how easily trees can catch fire has not yet been well-studied. (另一位专家Matthew Robson认为这项研究特别令人兴奋,因为叶片化学物质对树木易燃性的重要性尚未得到充分研究。)”可知,Matthew Robson对这项研究感到兴奋是因为它推进了一个研究不足的领域。故选D项。

Li Hua
【答案】Dear Mike,
I’m delighted to hear that you’re curious about our break-time group activities. I’d like to share with you a special activity called Baduanjin, an ancient Chinese exercise we practice together and enjoy daily.
It’s simple yet deeply rewarding. Following a guided video, we perform eight slow and graceful movements as one, our shared breathing helping to stretch the body and calm the mind. This practice is far more than a series of movements. Physically, it relaxes our muscles and refreshes our bodies after sitting for a long time. Mentally, it clears our minds, reduces stress, and improves focus for the next class. Culturally, it offers a unique insight into traditional Chinese philosophy, emphasizing body-mind harmony.
I truly hope you can join us and give it a try one day!
Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Mike,
It’s a pleasure to hear that you’re interested in our class break activities. The group activity that best reflects our school spirit is our daily group jogging. Unlike individual exercises, it focuses on team discipline and spirit. Each morning after the second class, students quickly line up by class. Led by flag bearers, we jog in neat formation around the track, our rhythmic slogans echoing across the playground.
This daily routine brings many benefits. Firstly, it’s an excellent physical workout, boosting our energy and improving our fitness. Additionally, it teaches teamwork and fosters class pride. Sweating and striving together not only create a deep sense of connection but also fuel our academic focus and unity.
Hopefully, someday you can come and experience it firsthand.
Yours,
Li Hua
