Dogs are the most popular pets in the world. They help us stay healthy and make us feel good. However, two Australian researchers worry that pet dogs are making changes on the environment.
From past studies, the researchers found that medicine on dogs’ fur (皮毛) can wash off into water when they swim. The medicine can be harmful to local wildlife, and birds may even use pieces of the harmful fur to make their nests (鸟巢).
Dogs can also pass on illnesses to local wildlife. In Australia, some penguins and special kinds of baby birds have died because of it.
Dogs often run through birds’ seaside nesting areas. When this happens, the birds have to keep flying away. All that flying causes exhaustion. And these birds probably have already used up a lot of energy (能量) just to reach the beach. As a result, a smaller number of birds are living in the area and there are fewer kinds of birds too.
But the researchers also say the problem isn’t really with dogs—it’s with how many of them we have and how little their owners care about the environment. According to the researchers, there are between 700 million and 1 billion pet dogs in the world.
Since we will not stop having dogs as pets, we need to find better ways to love our pet dogs as well as to protect the world we share with them.
26.How does medicine on dogs’ fur go into water?
A.When dogs jump into rivers. B.When dogs walk to the beach.

What do cats say?
◇Meow, we’re easy to take care of. We don’t need as much attention (关注) as dogs. We like to play alone, so we are great if you’re busy. We are perfect for small homes because we don’t need a lot of space (空间).

◇Meow! We’re cheaper! Getting a cat costs less than getting a dog. We eat less. We don’t need many toys. Sometimes, we can play with a string ball for hours or take a nap in a box. We clean ourselves, so you don’t need to spend money cleaning us.

A pet is like a special friend, but many people discuss whether middle school students are ready for keeping one. Keeping a pet is not just fun and games— 36 Here are some key points to consider.
The first important thing is time. 37 However, students often have busy lives with homework, exams, and after-school activities. So it’s important for them to decide if they have enough time without neglecting (忽视) the pet.
38 Pets need food, toys, and medicine when they get sick. These costs can add up, and students should understand the financial (财务的) responsibility before getting a pet.
39 Pets need lots of care and a safe place to live. Students should get their family’s help in caring for a pet, because this support (支持) helps the pet stay healthy and happy.
All in all, middle school students must think about their time, money, and family support before having a pet. 40 Only in this way can they enjoy the company (陪伴) of a pet while taking on the responsibility well.
A.It is a big responsibility (责任).
B.It can lower stress in daily life.

A.Practise B.Practised C.To practising D.Practising
【答案】D

A.not to keep B.to keep C.keeping D.not keeping
【答案】A
【详解】句意:——你介意告诉我你的问题吗?——当然不。我的老师经常建议我不要把问题藏在心里。

C.When dogs play with seabirds. D.When dogs make nests by the river.
27.What causes the death of some penguins in Australia?
A.Dogs bite and kill them. B.Dogs take their home away.
C.Dogs catch and eat them. D.Dogs make them weak and sick.
28.What does the underlined word “exhaustion” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Tiredness. B.Carelessness. C.Excitement. D.Enjoyment.
29.What’s the structure of the passage?
A.①②‖③④‖⑤⑥ B.①‖②③④‖⑤‖⑥
C.①②③④‖⑤‖⑥ D.①②③‖④‖⑤⑥
30.What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To ask people to give up keeping pet dogs.
B.To tell people to walk pet dogs at sea sides.
C.To show the number of pet dogs all over the world.
D.To discuss environmental problems caused by pet dogs.
