When we’re angry, we often look for ways to blow off steam - a vent (发泄) session with a friend, a long run, or even a few rounds of boxing are common options. But, according to new research, this actually isn’t the best way to cope with anger. These activities can have the opposite effect.
A study published in Clinical Psychology Review shows that mindfulness activities, such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing, are much more effective in reducing anger. Sophie Kjærvik, an expert at Virginia Commonwealth University, led the study at Ohio State University. She was inspired by the rise in popularity of rage rooms, which promote smashing things as a way to cope with anger. “I wanted to disprove the theory of expressing anger as a way of coping with it,” she said.
Kjærvik and her team analyzed over 150 studies involving 10,189 participants of different backgrounds. The analysis was guided by the Schachter-Singer two-factor theory, which states that emotions are guided by physiological arousal (激活) and cognitive assessment.
Kjærvik wanted to see how arousal levels affect people’s abilities to cope with anger. The team analyzed activities that increased arousal, such as hitting a bag, jogging, cycling, and swimming, versus arousal-decreasing activities.
They discovered that mindfulness activities like deep breathing, relaxation, meditation, slow-flow yoga, progressive muscle relaxation, and taking a timeout all decreased anger levels.
“I think it’s really important to break the myth that if you’re angry you should blow off steam - get it off your chest,” says Brad Bushman, a professor at Ohio State University. “Venting anger might sound like a good idea, but there’s not a shred of scientific evidence to support catharsis (宣泄) theory. To reduce anger, it is better to engage in activities that decrease arousal levels.”
While these findings might contradict popular instincts, the best approach is to use the same strategies we adopt to combat stress. “Progressive muscle relaxation and general relaxation might be as effective as mindfulness and meditation,” Kjærvik says. “The same strategies that work for stress also work for anger.”
4. What was the main purpose of Sophie Kjærvik’s study?
A. To promote the Schachter-Singer two-factor theory.
B. To compare different physical activities in reducing anger.
C. To challenge the idea that expressing anger can manage anger.
D. To confirm the function of rage rooms in coping with anger.
5. Which is correct according to the discovery of the study?
A. Rage rooms work in releasing anger.
B. Reducing arousal helps to alleviate anger.
C. Arousal plays the role as an anger extinguisher.
D. Deep breathing and meditation can boost arousal.
6. What is Brad Bushman’s attitude towards catharsis theory?
A. Supportive. B. Neutral. C. Indifferent. D. Skeptical.
7. What might be the best title for the passage?
A. Venting Anger: the Broken Myth for Anger Management
B. Mindfulness Activities: an Alternative to Reducing Anger
C. Arousal Increase: Mindfulness Activities Outperforming Venting
D. Managing Emotions: Physical Activities as an Effective Approach
C 5. B 6. D 7. B

根据第二段“A study published in Clinical Psychology Review shows that mindfulness activities, such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing, are much more effective in reducing anger.
根据倒数第二段的最后一句“To reduce anger, it is better to engage in activities that decrease arousal levels. (为了减少愤怒,最好是参加一些降低兴奋水平的活动。)”可知,减少兴奋有助于缓解愤怒。故选B项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段““I think it’s really important to break the myth that if you’re angry you should blow off steam — get it off your chest,” says Brad Bushman, a professor at Ohio State University. “Venting anger might sound like a good idea, but there’s not a shred of scientific evidence to support catharsis (宣泄) theory. To reduce anger, it is better to engage in activities that decrease arousal levels.”

Experts have long known that reading skills develop before kindergarten, but new research from the Harvard Graduate School of Education suggests they may begin as early as infancy (幼儿期). The study, led by Nadine Gaab, found that developmental trajectories (轨迹) between children with and without reading disabilities start to differ around 18 months of age. It stresses the need for early identification, early intervention, and improved early literacy courses in preschools.
Gaab explained some children enter kindergarten with a less-developed brain for learning to read, and that these differences appear in toddlerhood. “We’re currently waiting until second or third grade to find kids who are struggling readers,” she said. “We should intervene way earlier because we know the younger a brain is, the more plastic it is for language input.”
Gaab and her co-authors worked with 130 participants, starting as early as 3 months old. For over a decade, they used MRI scans to track brain development from infancy to childhood and its relation to literacy skills. Their sample included children from Boston and Canada, combined with data from the Calgary Preschool MRI Dataset.
While other studies track brain development, this is the only longitudinal (纵向的) study that follows brain development from infancy with comprehensive literacy outcomes. “Those other studies had bigger sample sizes, but they were more focused on typical maturation,” said co-author Ted Turesky. “We didn’t see other studies that started in infancy, tracked brain maturation in the same set of kids for as long, and included academic outcome measures.”
The findings suggest that children who struggle with reading may begin school already showing brain differences that affect literacy learning. Gaab emphasized that understanding when and how these differences arise could help improve early screening and support. She believes such basic research can inform education policy and help more children succeed in reading from the start.
8. What does the new study find about reading disabilities?
A. They emerge after kindergarten. B. They change a person’s character.
C. They are tough to identify early. D. They appear much earlier than assumed.
9. What does the underlined word “plastic” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Difficult to damage. B. Easily influenced or changed.
C. Capable of remembering things quickly. D. Especially suitable for acquiring new skills.
10. What about the study does paragraph 3 focus on?
A. Its scientific bases. B. Its technology limitations.
C. Its significance. D. Its process.
11. What can be inferred from Turesky’s words?
A. Large sample sizes guarantee reliable findings.
B. The findings may help shape courses in preschools.
C. The longitudinal research method adopted is pioneering.
D. Typical maturation should be involved in following studies.
D 9. B 10. D 11. C

根据第一段“Experts have long known that reading skills develop before kindergarten, but new research from the Harvard Graduate School of Education suggests they may begin as early as infancy (幼儿期). The study, led by Nadine Gaab, found that developmental trajectories (轨迹) between children with and without reading disabilities start to differ around 18 months of age.(专家们早就知道阅读技能在幼儿园之前就开始发展,但哈佛大学教育研究生院的新研究表明,阅读技能可能早在幼儿期就开始发展。由纳丁・加布领导的这项研究发现,有阅读障碍和没有阅读障碍的儿童的发展轨迹在18个月大左右开始出现差异。)”可知,阅读障碍出现的时间比之前认为的要早得多。故选D。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段“We should intervene way earlier because we know the younger a brain is, the more plastic it is for language input.(我们应该更早地进行干预,因为我们知道大脑越年轻,对语言输入就越plastic。)”
根据第三段“Gaab and her co-authors worked with 130 participants, starting as early as 3 months old. For over a decade, they used MRI scans to track brain development from infancy to childhood and its relation to literacy skills. Their sample included children from Boston and Canada, combined with data from the Calgary Preschool MRI Dataset.(加布和她的合著者从3个月大的130名参与者开始研究。在十多年的时间里,他们使用核磁共振扫描来追踪从婴儿期到儿童期的大脑发育及其与读写能力的关系。他们的样本包括来自波士顿和加拿大的儿童,并结合了卡尔加里学前核磁共振数据集的数据。)”可知,本段主要讲述了研究的过程,包括研究对象、研究时间、研究方法以及数据来源等。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段““Those other studies had bigger sample sizes, but they were more focused on typical maturation,” said co-author Ted Turesky. “We didn’t see other studies that started in infancy, tracked brain maturation in the same set of kids for as long, and included academic outcome measures.”(合著者泰德・图雷斯基说:“其他那些研究样本量更大,但它们更关注典型的成熟过程。我们没有看到其他从婴儿期开始,长期追踪同一组孩子大脑成熟过程,并纳入学业成果测量的研究。”)”可知,图雷斯基的话表明该研究采用的纵向研究方法具有开创性。故选C。

The newest, hottest power couple doesn’t live in Hollywood. It’s actually the marriage of solar panels and reservoirs (水库): Known as floatovoltaics, these devices on simple floats (浮体) generate power while shading the water below.
The primary advantage of the technology is that no trees need to be cleared for solar farms. As an added bonus, the water cools the panels, increasing their efficiency. Research shows that floatovoltaics on just a small share of global lakes and reservoirs could meet nearly a third of the US’s annual electricity demand.
As floatovoltaic systems expand, with the market expected to grow 23% annually from 2025 to 2030, scientists are studying their impact on ecosystems. “We shouldn’t be expanding clean energy at the cost of biodiversity loss,” warns Elisa Stephens, a researcher at the University of California, Davis. “This is a great opportunity to increase our research and develop smart designs and better sitting practices to have this happy marriage between a healthy, biodiverse ecosystem and renewable energy expansion.”
Most floatovoltaics are placed on reservoirs. When paired with the existing water power plants, the panels can generate additional daytime power. This combination can make up for seasonal drops in water or sunlight, ensuring a more stable yearly output.
Though artificial, reservoirs host lots of water life that floatovoltaics can interact with. Would this bring risks or benefits? “Our customers have seen migrating (迁徙的) birds feeding and resting on the floats,” reports Chris Bachman of a leading floatovoltaics company.
Ecological considerations get trickier where there are unforeseen knock- on effects. Experiments show that shading from panels can slow the growth of algae that fish eat and also reduce harmful algae, affecting the food chain. Floats can hide fish from birds that hunt them but may also serve as safe habitats for these birds. “We need to monitor for long periods to understand the big picture,” says freshwater ecologist Simpson Cardoso.
Scientists and companies are discussing wider spacing between panels and avoiding construction during waterbirds’ sensitive periods, such as migration and nesting. “There can definitely be that kind of ecological balance,” says Stephens.
12. How does the author introduce floatovoltaics?
A. By giving a technical definition. B. By explaining how they work.
C. By relating them to a married couple. D. By describing a popular movie scene.
13. What is scientists’ major concern about floatovoltaics?
A. Their influence on ecosystems and biodiversity. B. Their seasonal changes in power output.
C. Their high cost of construction and maintenance. D. Their competition against traditional solar farms.
14. Why does the author quote Chris Bachman in paragraph 5?
A. To provide evidence of customer satisfaction. B. To show a potential benefit of floatovoltaics.
C. To note the complexity of ecological interactions. D. To draw attention to protecting migrating birds.
15. What are scientists focusing on?
A. Conducting the application of wider panels. B. Developing smarter designs and practices.
C. Proving the existence of ecological balance. D. Avoiding constructions on waterbird habitats.
C 13. A 14. B 15. B

Tom Perry concentrated hard. The rocket competition would begin shortly. Every detail mattered, and he was determined not to overlook a single one. The pressure was huge, but Tom was accustomed to being on top. He had never tasted defeat, and he wasn’t about to start now.
The other children rarely approached him and when they did, it felt forced. Tom preferred to keep to himself, confident in his ability to win yet again. He assembled(组装)his launch platform with great care, sorting through engines, igniters(点火器), and other tools in his toolbox. Suddenly, his igniter wire slipped from his grasp and disappeared into the grass. In a panic, he found another and carefully fitted it into place.
Tom checked his rocket again. It was perfect, but when he glanced at the others’ rockets, he found lots of problems immediately. One rocket, however, had the look of a winner. And Tom’s heart sank. A thin boy carried it carefully.
“Hi,” a voice interrupted his focus. It was the thin boy, Ed, offering a nervous smile, “Nice rocket.” Tom whispered thanks, eyes on his tools. He asked Ed where he tested his rockets because he had never seen him at the competitions before. Ed said he just practiced alone behind his house. Although Tom felt a bit nervous, he pretended not to care much about the contest. “Good luck,” said Tom, and he continued to concentrate on his own rocket.
As Ed lifted his rocket, Tom felt an increasing anxiety. Just then, he noticed a fin(尾翼)on Ed’s rocket had loosened. But Ed hadn’t noticed it. Tom felt a bit sorry but decided not to say anything.
As Ed’s turn approached, Tom’s heart jumped. He had to speak up, despite the risk of losing. “Ed, hold up!” he shouted, drawing the attention of the crowd.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Ed stopped, turned around and looked at Tom confusedly. Tom pointed to the loose fin. Ed fixed it just in time, and his rocket shot into the sky perfectly. The crowd cheered, and Tom felt a mix of regret and relief. He had solved a problem, but at the cost of his own victory. As his name was called, he had to walk into the field, win or lose. The numbers were announced, and Tom’s rocket had reached an impressive height, but it wasn’t enough to beat Ed. Then he noticed Ed coming over to him.
Tom felt the pain of defeat but also a sense of pride. He had helped Ed, and that counted for something. As he packed up his tools, a hand fell on his shoulder. It was Ed, thanking him. Tom couldn’t help but feel a connection, a shared bond over their common love of rockets. The other children approached, their attitudes softened by the day’s events. They invited Tom to join them at Ed’s house, and he nodded, feeling a shift within him. For the first time, he saw the value in sharing his passion and skills with others.

Experts have long known that reading skills develop before kindergarten but new research from the Harvard Graduate School of Education suggests they may begin as early as infancy (幼儿期).

As an added bonus the water cools the panels, increasing their efficiency.
A Conducting the application of wider panels. B. Developing smarter designs and practices.
C. Proving the existence of ecological balance. D. Avoiding constructions on waterbird habitats.

Tom Perry concentrated hard. The rocket competition would begin shortly. Every detail mattered, and he was determined not to overlook a single one. The pressure was huge, but Tom was accustomed to being on top. He had never tasted defeat, and he wasn’t about to start now.
The other children rarely approached him, and when they did, it felt forced.
