Guide to Being a Buddy
Thanks for being a buddy (同伴). Here is some information about the International Buddy Programme (IBP) and it will help explain what it means to be a buddy for a new international student.
Your role as a buddy is to:
•Make first contact via email with your buddy once you are matched with a student.
•Welcome and look after your buddy when they arrive at school.
•Continue to answer any questions, provide school and local services information such as transportation and facilities.
•Maintain contact, even if your buddy is feeling “at home”.
Culture Shock
The first year at a new school can be full of mixed emotions. Students may feel excited about new experiences or nervous about leaving family and making friends. Buddies should recognise these feelings and offer support to help students adjust to their new environment.
Help your buddy by:
•Empathizing (有同感) their difficulties — don’t take bad comments personally and try not to argue how wonderful New Zealand is.
•Explaining the rules and norms (规范) of New Zealand — if they understand the “why” behind difficult situations, they may be able to better understand situations and actions.
•Keeping in contact if they are becoming upset.
If you want ideas and advice or have any questions, please click here to contact the International Student Support team.

Passage 4
Peru is one of the most popular places to visit in South America. It is a huge country (it’s twice the size of Texas), so before you get there, you need to think about how you’re going to get from A to B.
Bus
Taking a bus is the best and easiest way to get around Peru. Even though it takes longer, it’s a reliable, safe, and cheap option. The best way to book a bus journey in Peru is with BusBud, as it shows you all the routes and companies available and is super easy to use!
Another popular option is to book a shuttle service via Bookaway. It is essentially a minivan that typically goes directly from A to B and is a slightly more luxurious option. Bookaway also shows options to book bus trips if you want to grab tickets that way.
Car Rental
If you have a bigger budget and want to go off the beaten path, then renting a car in Peru is a fantastic option, as it gives you freedom. The main roads in Peru are, for the most part, well-maintained, so driving here is a pleasant experience,
Train
Train travel isn’t very popular in Peru. It’s mostly used by tourists to get to Machu Picchu, as both IncaRail and PeruRail operate lines from Cusco (or the nearby town of Ollantaytambo) to Machu Picchu. PeruRail also travels to Puno and Arequipa.
Plane
Domestic flights in Peru are booming, and airlines like Star Peru, LATAM Peru, and Peruvian Airlines are the most popular in the country. They operate regular routes between major cities like Lima, Cusco, and Arequipa, as well as more remote destinations like Iquitos and Pucallpa-which is handy as both these spots are notoriously hard to reach.
As you can guess, flying will be a lot more expensive than traveling by bus, but of course, your travel time will be a lot less. Expect to pay around $127 USD for a one-way flight between Cusco and Lima!
1.Which mode of transportation is considered the most suitable for traveling in Peru?
A.The bus. B.The car. C.The train. D.The plane.
2.What is the main benefit of renting a car in Peru?
A.It is the cheapest transportation option.
B.It allows you to avoid busy tourist spots.
C.It guarantees access to all remote destinations.
D.It provides the freedom to explore less-traveled areas.
3.How much would a round-trip flight between Cusco and Lima cost?
A.$127 USD. B.$254 USD. C.$381 USD. D.$508 USD.
Passage 5
A British friend told me he couldn’t understand why Chinese people love eating sunflower seeds (葵花子) as a snack so much. “I’ve met a lot of older Chinese and many have a crack in their front teeth; I believe that’s from cracking the seeds,” he said.
I had never noticed the habit, but once he mentioned it, I suddenly became more aware. I realized that whenever I’m watching TV or typing a report, I always start mindlessly cracking sunflower seeds. My friend doesn’t like sunflower seeds, and, to him, it seems unnecessary to work so hard just to get one small seed.
When we were young, the whole family would usually get together for Chinese New Year. Then, we all lived close to one another, usually in a small city, and sometimes even neighbors would go door to door on Chinese New Year’s Eve to check out what every household was making.
I remember my parents would be in the kitchen cooking. In the living room, a large table would already be laid out, complete with a fancy table cloth, ready — made dumpling fillings, and dishes full of candy, fruits and sunflower seeds.
Some of the dishes were to be offered to our ancestors later, while others were for neighbors and children to eat before the evening feast. I must have learned how to crack sunflower seeds back then.
I don’t think it’s right to criticize one’s choice in food or eating habits, no. matter how strange they may seem.
It’s not only in China. When I went abroad, I found people had all sorts of strange habits when it came to food. In Denmark, they put salted red fish on bread and eat it for dinner, no matter how much it ruins their breath. They think it’s a delicacy, and it’s connected with their culture. I think it’s a wonderful tradition.

B.One kind of food doesn’t necessarily suit everyone.

A mould (霉菌) that grows on food waste has been shown to completely change its taste, allowing food that would otherwise be thrown out to be eaten in a new way.
Every year, about a third of food globally is wasted, with leftover responsible for around 8 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions (排放) over its lifetime. Repurposing it into new kinds of eatable food can reduce the climate impact of food production while also improving food security.
Neurospora intermedia, an orange fungus (真菌) grown from the byproducts of milk production, has been used for centuries to make oncom, a traditional food in Indonesia. Vayu Hill-Maini at the University of California, and his colleagues are now working with chefs at Michelin-starred restaurants to develop new foods using the fungus.
His team has shown that N. intermedia can grow well on at least 30 types of agricultural waste, including tomato and banana skin, where the fungus can transform indigestible plant waste into nutritious food in around 36 hours. Some of the research results are now appearing on their menus at the Alchemist restaurant in Copenhagen run by Rasmus Munk. N. intermedia is used in a dessert of jellied plum wine with rice custard, which is left to ferment (发酵) for 60 hours. This process has changed both the smell and taste “in quite a dramatic way”, according to Munk.
When the team asked Danish consumers to try it for the first time, people consistently rated its taste above 6 on a scale of l to 9.
“I found it mind-blowing to suddenly discover flavours like banana without adding anything except the fungi, ” says Hill-Maini. “Of course, all of our wild shots don’t work out, but when they do, they can produce quite revolutionary results. ”
The chefs involved hope that by demonstrating what upcycled food can do at the highest level of gastronomy (美食学) , the concept will gain commercial appeal. “We are just at the beginning stages of unlocking its full potential,” says Hill-Maini.
1.What can we learn about N. intermedia, according to Hill-Maini’s findings?
A.It significantly changes the flavor of food.
B.It is primarily used to make jellied plum wine.
C.It has been used to make traditional food for long.
D.It can transform indigestible food within 60 hours.
2.What does the underlined word “mind-blowing” in paragraph 6 mean?
A.Annoying. B.Puzzling. C.Surprising. D.Satisfying.
3.What is the best title of the text?
A.A New Trend in Food Industry. B.A Fungus Creates Wonder.
C.A Mould Grows on Food Waste. D.The Danger of Food Waste.

A.$127 USD. B.$254 USD. C.$381 USD. D.$508 USD.
【答案】1.A 2.D 3.B

1.What lesson can we learn from the passage?
A.Eating habits come from a certain culture.
B.One kind of food doesn’t necessarily suit everyone.
C.It is good to form healthy eating habits.
D.Changing your eating habits will change your life.
2.What did the writer become aware of?
A.She had ever typed a report about seeds.
B.She has a habit of cracking sunflower seeds.
C.She ate various snacks while watching TV.
D.She damaged her teeth by eating sunflower seeds.
3.What does the writer prove by mentioning Chinese New Year?
A.Eating sunflower seeds is related to it.
B.Children can eat delicious food on that day.
C.The families would get together for it.
D.The traditions of celebrating it disappear.
【答案】1.A 2.B 3.A

They think it’s a delicacy, and it’s connected with their culture. 故选A。
根据文章第二段的“I had never noticed the habit, but once he mentioned it, I suddenly became more aware. I realized that whenever I’m watching TV or typing a report, I always start mindlessly cracking sunflower seeds.(我以前从未注意到这个习惯,但一旦他提到这一点,我突然变得更加意识到。我发现自己在看电视或打报告时,总是无意识地开始嗑葵花子)”可知,作者意识到自己有一个嗑葵花子的习惯。故选B。
3.推理判断题。根据文章第三段“When we were young, the whole family would usually get together for Chinese New Year.(我们年轻的时候,全家通常会聚在一起过春节)”,第四段的“In the living room, a large table would already be laid out, complete with a fancy table cloth, ready — made dumpling fillings, and dishes full of candy, fruits and sunflower seeds.(客厅里已经摆了一张大桌子,上面有一块漂亮的桌布、现成的饺子馅和装满糖果、水果和葵花籽的盘子)”和第五段的 “Some of the dishes were to be offered to our ancestors later, while others were for neighbors and children to eat before the evening feast. I must have learned how to crack sunflower seeds back then.(其中一些菜肴是后来献给我们的祖先的,而另一些则是供邻居和孩子在晚餐前吃的。那时我一定学会了如何嗑葵花子)”可推知,作者在提到春节时是为了证明吃葵花子与春节这个节日有关。故选A。

【答案】1.A 2.C 3.B
根据第一段“A mould (霉菌) that grows on food waste has been shown to completely change its taste, allowing food that would otherwise be thrown out to be eaten in a new way. (研究表明,生长在食物残渣上的一种霉菌能够彻底改变食物的味道,使得原本会被扔掉的食物能够以新的方式被食用)”以及第五段“When the team asked Danish consumers to try it for the first time, people consistently rated its taste above 6 on a scale of 1 to 9. (当团队让丹麦消费者第一次尝试这种食物时,人们一致在1到9的范围内给它的味道打了6分以上的高分)”可知,这种霉菌可以改变食物的味道,提高食物的口感。故选A。
根据第六段中““I found it mind-blowing to suddenly discover flavours like banana without adding anything except the fungi, ” says Hill-Maini. (Hill-Maini表示:“当仅仅添加这种真菌就能突然品尝到香蕉味等风味时,我觉得这太mind-blowing。”)”可知,在没有添加其他东西的情况下发现香蕉味,这种体验应该是令人惊讶的,所以mind blowing意为“令人惊讶的”。A.
根据第一段“A mould (霉菌) that grows on food waste has been shown to completely change its taste, allowing food that would otherwise be thrown out to be eaten in a new way. (研究表明,生长在食物残渣上的一种霉菌能够彻底改变食物的味道,使得原本会被扔掉的食物能够以新的方式被食用)”以及最后一段“The chefs involved hope that by demonstrating what upcycled food can do at the highest level of gastronomy (美食学) , the concept will gain commercial appeal. “We are just at the beginning stages of unlocking its full potential,” says Hill-Maini.

Book Recommendation
Olive, Mabel and Me by Andrew Cotter
This is a funny telling of how a sports commentator turned his two dogs into Internet sensations (轰动). If you’ve seen videos of dogs and laughed your but t off, the book provides the same humor, along with wonderful pictures of dogs and Scottish highlands. Let’s face it—who doesn’t need a good laugh, and pictures of dogs?
—Isabel Quintana
Bruno, Chief of Police by Martin Walker
A mystery series focused on Bruno Courrèges, the chief of police in the small town of St. Denis in the Périgord region of southwestern France. Walker brings his knowledge both as a journalist and as a resident of St. Denis to these pages, as he explores the culture and socio-economic changes occurring in contemporary rural France.
—Edward Copenhagen
Land of Aeolia by Ilias Venezis, translated by Therese Sellers
The author writes of his peaceful childhood summers in Anatolia, before the horrors of World War I and the loss of his homeland. This is a beautiful novel that is beyond language and country and brings back memories of a lost world. I have found some English translations of modern Greek literature lacking the ability to express the richness of the Greek language, but Sellers deals with this playful and magical language beautifully.
—Rhea Lesage
Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer
I wish everyone hoping to start a home garden could read the chapter The Three Sisters. The author, an authority on plant study, describes how the three work and play together. She expertly creates a sense of mystery and beauty of everyday life. And she reminds readers how much we could learn from our sisters and brothers.
