Four of the World’s Natural Disasters
The following four natural disasters destroyed cities and communities around the world. By flood, typhoon, or earthquake, these events have altogether taken millions of human lives.
Yangtze River Flood
The major flood of 1931 covered tens of thousands of square miles, flooding rice fields and many cities, including Nanjing and Wuhan. The flood influenced more than 50 million people. Government organizations, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, estimated (估计) that about 3.7 million people died in this disaster.
Typhoon Nina
Typhoon Nina struck Henan province of China in August 1975. The typhoon caused a serious dam (水坝) failure, and more than 150,000 people were dead or injured. According to reports, at least 26, 000 people died in the floods. About 145,000 people died from diseases caused by water pollution and famine (饥荒) . The number of people influenced by the disaster was more than 10,000,000.
Kashmir Earthquake
On October 8, 2005, a disastrous earthquake struck the Jashmir region. The earthquake measured 7.6, followed by many aftershocks, landslides, and falling rocks. The seriousness of the damage and the high number of deaths were worsened by poor construction (建筑). In Kashmir, at least 79,000 people were killed, and more than 32,000 buildings broke down.
Haitian Earthquake
At the beginning of 2010, an earthquake hit Haiti. The earthquake measured 7.0 and was followed by aftershocks that measured 5.9 and 5.5. Another aftershock that measured 5.9 struck on January 20. There have been different views about the total number of deaths caused by this earthquake, but estimates suggest that about 200,000 — 300,000 people died. Hundreds of thousands more were forced to leave their homes.

Last weekend, I took my 4-year-old grandson Oliver to the park. He had been pestering (纠缠) me to take him to the park to watch the ducks in the pond; I finally realized his wish. I went in thinking I’d be the teacher to teach him about the ducks, but that day, Oliver ended up teaching me more.
He had no goals. 4-year-olds don’t need goals. As soon as we stepped 50 feet into the park, Oliver looked up at the sky, where big soft clouds moved slowly. He stood still, smiling, and found real joy in watching them. I’d long forgotten clouds’ magic: My mind was filled with things to do, but watching their slow movement could be soothing and reduce my worries and nervousness. Next, Oliver focused on the big trees, laughing as their branches shook in the wind. When a small bird jumped on the grass, he ran after it, laughing as though it were the funniest thing in the world. In that moment, nothing else mattered to him.
His curiosity never disappeared, especially when it came to fallen leaves. He hunted for them, big and small, treating each one like a treasure. He only saw them as tools for play. No screens or toys were needed. Nearby, kids played with their parents, and dog walkers passed by. Oliver waved at everyone, holding out his hand for high fives with 4-and 5-year-olds, who smiled and said hi back. His mix of real words and kid talk didn’t stop him — he just wanted to connect, without judgment, or fear.
The biggest lesson hit me then: live in the moment. He never asked the time, when we’d leave, or what would be next. Whether he was running after sticks, petting a dog, or running across the grass, he was entirely in the moment. That hour with Oliver reminded me of the wonder we lose as adults, and of many things we can learn from a child’s simple, unplanned joy.
24.Why did the author take Oliver to the park?
A.To clean the park. B.To feed the ducks.
C.To act as a teacher. D.To watch the ducks.
25.What does the underlined word “soothing” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Dangerous. B.Confusing. C.Comforting. D.Changeable.
26.What do we know about Oliver from paragraph 3?
A.He was afraid of meeting people.
B.He had fun playing toys in the park.
C.He had a strong curiosity about fallen leaves.
D.He didn’t get along well with other children in the park.
27.What can we learn from the text?
A.Knowledge is power. B.Now is all that counts.
C.Friendship comes from getting together. D.Nothing is more important than education.
C
The fear that language is in decline (衰退) is like the story of the boy who cried wolf, with one key difference: the wolf never appears. For a very long time, people have worried that language standards are falling, yet this feared breakdown in communication has never actually happened.
Language has always been and will remain a useful tool for communication. Those who warn about the decline of language often do not know its history. Their worries are usually not about a real decline, but are simply statements of personal preference for the way of speaking they are used to. The idea that language will get worse to the point where we can only communicate with simple sounds is unfounded. The clearest evidence for this is that people have been making the same warnings for hundreds of years.
Many famous writers throughout history have moaned about falling standards. Yet, the very same periods produced some of the greatest works in English literature. And anxiety about standards is not unique to English. Speakers of every language in the world have, at some point, sighed for its future.
The truth is that English, like all other languages, keeps changing. The feeling of decline is a false idea created by the speed of this change within our own short lifetimes. Because change often happens between generations, older speakers see the rules they grew up with being replaced by new ones. This can cause cognitive discomfort, which then turns into negative comments. We naturally look for intellectual reasons to explain our personal preferences.
If we could live for centuries, we would see the bigger picture. Language change is not simply a sign of carelessness. It happens at all levels, from vocabulary to grammar. Over centuries, a language can be changed so much that it becomes unrecognizable. However, like a complex (复杂的) natural system, language often maintains a balance. Simplification in one area can lead to greater complexity in another. What stays the same is the main expressive power of the language. You can always say what needs to be said.
28.As for language decline, the author is ______.
A.disapproving B.supportive
C.confused D.indifferent
29.What does the phrase “moaned about” underlined in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A.Expressed dissatisfaction with.
B.Showed curiosity about.
C.Carefully thought about.
D.Paid no attention to.
30.It is implied in this passage that we should ______.
A.accept personal differences in language
B.stop worrying about language decline
C.avoid using simplified language
D.protect language from decline
31.What does the author mainly do in this passage?
A.Address a problem. B.Make a comparison.
C.Argue against a view. D.Present facts and information.
D
Some of life’s simplest mysteries can prove the hardest to solve. One such mystery is how a bird sleeps, especially while it’s on a branch.
The sleep cycle during our deepest sleep lasts for several minutes, but in birds, it lasts hardly 10 seconds; they will keep one part of their brain awake, which you might notice when a bird has one eye open. This will allow birds to run away from a hunt at a moment’s notice, even when they’re in the middle of a sleep.
To fall asleep, a bird’s body goes through a series of changes, one of which is that the muscles lose their hardness, which happens as a main result of reduced brain control of muscle movement. To stand perfectly balanced on a branch while the muscles become weak isn’t easy. Anyone who has tried to sleep while standing on a train would know this. So when a bird lowers itself, its talons (爪子) automatically and involuntarily bend and hold on tightly to the branch, and until the leg is straightened, the talons will not relax. The key behind this mechanism (机制) is the bird’s flexor tendons (屈肌腱) that connect muscles to bones. The flexor tendon stretches, thus bending the bird’s toes.
But a recent paper found that sleeping European starlings (a common bird found in North America and Europe) don’t use the mechanism. The researchers observed that the birds bent their knees only slightly, not enough for the mechanism to kick into action. The toes, as a result, were largely unbent, and the birds balanced on the central part of their feet while they slept.
“Birds are varied and unique, exhibiting different bodies, physiologies, and behaviors depending on which species, genus, or family one studies. Sleep cycles differ just as widely. While we may not know the whole story yet, there is no denying that it is remarkable that birds manage this balancing act daily!” said Salama, who has a degree in life sciences and biochemistry from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai.
32.What is the main reason birds can escape quickly even while sleeping?
A.Their sleep cycles are very short.
B.They keep one part of their brain awake.
C.They sleep with one eye open.
D.Their talons hold tightly to the branch.
33.What is the role of flexor tendons in helping birds balance on branches?
A.Stretching to make talons bend and lock.
B.Enabling the power of birds’ legs.
C.Controlling muscles’ hardness and movement.
D.Connecting muscles to strengthen their functions.
34.What can we infer from Salama’s words?
A.Learning birds’ habits needs cooperation.
B.Denying birds’ importance is unwise.
C.Knowing birds’ balancing acts is useful.
D.Studying birds’ sleep has challenges.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Why Do Birds Require Less Sleep?
B.Why Don’t Sleeping Birds Fall Off Branches?
C.Why Do Sleeping Birds Have One Eye Open?
D.Why Do European Starlings Sleep Differently?

The familiar smell of garlic and onion filled the air as I opened my lunch bag to see what my mom had packed for me. On any other occasion, I would have been delighted to eat my mom’s fried tofu: a Chinese dish that I often ate for dinner. But not today, the day a nice girl had invited me, the new girl at school, to sit with her friends during lunch.
“Emma, over here!” My new friend was waving her arms, trying to get my attention.
As I prepared to walk over to the table, memories of elementary and middle school lunchtimes came back. I remembered my embarrassment as my friends would hold their noses when I brought homemade Chinese food. I remembered how my embarrassment changed to anger when I complained about the smell to my mom.
I had argued with my mom that I wanted “normal” food for lunch. I remembered the look on my mom’s face, a mix between disappointment and confusion. But I was determined and she gave in. So for the rest days of middle school, my mom packed odorless (没有气味的), non-Chinese food like ham and cheese sandwiches. However, that day, she was in a rush and packed me leftovers(剩菜) from dinner.
As soon as I got to my new lunch table, I tried to hide my lunch bag down under my seat. I sat quietly, trying not to be noticed when Katrina, a newly met girl, asked where my food was. “I’m not really hungry,” I replied in an insecure voice. But Katrina had already seen me carry my lunch so she spoke out, “Then, I’ll eat it!” The other girls laughed — clearly Katrina was known to be a big eater.
I didn’t want to be rude to a potentially new friend so I reluctantly(不情愿地) dragged out my lunch bag. The moment I opened my lunch box, I could practically taste the garlic and onion. The girls, piqued (激起好奇心) by the smell in the air, all curiously looked at the oval-shaped lunch box. I expected an “Ew” or a “What is that?”

1.续写词数应为150左右;
I thought they would walk away or tell me to leave. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Chris,
How is everything going? I’m writing to share something exciting with you.
Since I entered high school, I’ve not only gained knowledge but also taken part in various school activities. The one that impressed me most was our school’s English Drama Festival last month. Our class performed a short play based on The Little Prince. I played the fox, and though I was nervous at first, I gradually gained confidence on stage. Through this experience, I improved my spoken English and learned the importance of teamwork. More importantly, it helped me overcome my fear of speaking in public.
I still remember you told me that your school also holds interesting events. What activity has left the deepest impression on you? I’m really curious and looking forward to your story!
Yours,
Li Hua

Para 1:
I thought they would walk away or tell me to leave. What I did not expect was that Katrina immediately grabbed a small piece of tofu and ate it. And I most certainly did not expect her to encourage the rest of the table to try my lunch. My new friends were going on about how lucky I was that my mom took the time to prepare a cooked meal for me. They were surprised by the fact that tofu could actually taste good. While I didn’t get to eat any of my mom’s fried tofu, I was full of pride and gratitude.
Para 2:
When I arrived home, my mom asked how my day went. Answering with a simple “Good,” I pulled out my lunch box from my bag. “I’m sorry, but I didn’t have time to buy bread or ham yesterday.” But when she noticed that the container was empty, she hesitated before asking “How was the food?” I paused a moment before I replied, “Perfect, mom. If it’s not too much trouble, can I still have fried tofu for lunch tomorrow?”

Four of the World’s Natural Disasters
The following four natural disasters destroyed cities and communities around the world. By flood, typhoon, or earthquake, these events have altogether taken millions of human lives.
Yangtze River Flood

根据第二段“Government organizations, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, estimated that about 3.7 million people died in this disaster.(包括国家海洋与大气管理局在内的政府机构估计,此次灾难造成约370万人丧生)”;第三段“The typhoon caused a serious dam failure, and more than 150,000 people were dead or injured.(这场台风导致了严重的水坝垮塌,造成超过15万人死亡或受伤)”;第四段“In Kashmir at least 79,000 people were killed, and more than 32,000 buildings broke down.(在克什米尔地区,至少有79000人丧生,超过32000座建筑物倒塌)”以及最后一段“There has been different views about the total number of deaths caused by this earthquake, but estimates suggest that about 200,000 — 300,000 people died.(对于此次地震造成的总死亡人数,存在不同的看法,但据估计,约有20万至30万人丧生)”可知,长江洪水造成的死亡人数最多。故选D。
根据第四段“The seriousness of the damage and the high number of deaths were worsened by poor construction.(由于建筑质量不佳,此次灾害造成的破坏程度更加严重,死亡人数也大幅增加)”可知,糟糕的建筑质量让克什米尔的局势变得更加严峻。故选C。
根据最后一段“Hundreds of thousands more were forced to leave their homes.(又有数十万人被迫离开了自己的家园)”可知,这次袭击海地的地震导致许多人无家可归。故选B。
根据第一段“He had been pestering (纠缠) me to take him to the park to watch the ducks in the pond; I finally realized his wish.(他一直缠着我,要我带他去公园看池塘里的鸭子;我最终实现了他的愿望)”可知,Oliver一直缠着作者带他去公园看池塘里的鸭子,作者最终满足了他的愿望。故选D项。
根据前文“He stood still, smiling, and found real joy in watching them. I’d long forgotten clouds’ magic: My mind was filled with things to do(他站着不动,面带微笑,从看着他们身上找到了真正的快乐。我早就忘记了云的魔力:我的脑子里满是要做的事情)”以及之后的转折以及后文“and reduce my worries and nervousness(减少我的担忧和紧张)”可知,划线单词和“减少我的担忧和紧张”并列,表达同样的意思,推知,应是“放松”之意,和C项意思相近。故选C项。
26.推理判断题。根据第三段“His curiosity never disappeared, especially when it came to fallen leaves. He hunted for them, big and small, treating each one like a treasure.(他的好奇心从未消失,尤其是对落叶的好奇。他到处寻找,无论大小,把每一个都当作珍宝)”可知,Oliver对落叶有着强烈的好奇心。故选C项。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段“The biggest lesson hit me then: live in the moment. He never asked the time, when we’d leave, or what would be next. Whether he was running after sticks, petting a dog, or running across the grass, he was entirely in the moment. That hour with Oliver reminded me of the wonder we lose as adults, and of many things we can learn from a child’s simple, unplanned joy.(我从中得到的最大教训是:活在当下。他从来没有问过时间,我们什么时候离开,或者接下来要做什么。无论他是在追树枝、抚摸狗,还是在草地上奔跑,他都完全沉浸在当下。和Oliver在一起的那一小时让我想起了我们作为成年人所失去的奇迹,也让我想起了我们可以从一个孩子简单的、计划外的快乐中学到很多东西)”可知,作者领悟到最重要的一点:要活在当下。故选B项。
【答案】28.A 29.A 30.B 31.C
根据第一段“The fear that language is in decline (衰退) is like the story of the boy who cried wolf, with one key difference: the wolf never appears. For a very long time, people have worried that language standards are falling, yet this feared breakdown in communication has never actually happened.(对语言衰落的恐惧就像那个喊狼来了的男孩的故事,但有一个关键的区别:狼从来没有出现过。很长一段时间以来,人们一直担心语言水平正在下降,然而这种令人担忧的沟通障碍从未真正发生过)”可知,作者认为语言衰退从未真正发生过,所以对“语言衰退论”持反对态度。故选A项。
根据下文“Yet, the very same periods produced some of the greatest works in English literature. And anxiety about standards is not unique to English. Speakers of every language in the world have, at some point, sighed for its future.(然而,就在同一时期,英国文学中出现了一些最伟大的作品。对标准的焦虑并不是英语独有的。世界上每一种语言的使用者都在某个时刻为其未来叹息)”可知,许多人都有对标准下降的焦虑,也就是不满意之意,推知moaned about应是“不满”之意,和A项意思相近。故选A项。
根据倒数第二段“The truth is that English, like all other languages, keeps changing. The feeling of decline is a false idea created by the speed of this change within our own short lifetimes.(事实上,英语和所有其他语言一样,都在不断变化。衰落的感觉是一种错误的想法,是在我们短暂的一生中这种变化的速度所造成的)”以及最后一段“If we could live for centuries, we would see the bigger picture. You can always say what needs to be said.(如果我们能活上几个世纪,我们就能看到更大的图景。语言的改变不仅仅是粗心大意的表现。它发生在各个层面,从词汇到语法。经过数个世纪的演变,一种语言可能会发生很大的变化,以至于变得无法辨认。然而,就像一个复杂的自然系统一样,语言往往保持着一种平衡。一个领域的简化可能导致另一个领域的更大复杂性。保持不变的是语言的主要表现力。该说什么就说什么)”可知,这篇文章暗示我们应该停止担心语言的衰退。故选B项。
31.推理判断题。根据第一段“The fear that language is in decline (衰退) is like the story of the boy who cried wolf, with one key difference: the wolf never appears. For a very long time, people have worried that language standards are falling, yet this feared breakdown in communication has never actually happened.(对语言衰落的恐惧就像那个喊狼来了的男孩的故事,但有一个关键的区别:狼从来没有出现过。很长一段时间以来,人们一直担心语言水平正在下降,然而这种令人担忧的沟通障碍从未真正发生过)”以及纵观全文可知,全文围绕批驳“语言正在衰退”这一错误观点展开,是在反驳一个观点。故选C项。
【答案】32.B 33.A 34.D 35.B
根据第二段“The sleep cycle during our deepest sleep lasts for several minutes, but in birds, it lasts hardly 10 seconds; they will keep one part of their brain awake, which you might notice when a bird has one eye open. This will allow birds to run away from a hunt at a moment’s notice, even when they’re in the middle of a sleep.(在我们最深的睡眠期间,睡眠周期持续几分钟,但在鸟类中,它几乎持续不到10秒;它们会让大脑的一部分保持清醒,当一只鸟睁着一只眼睛时,你可能会注意到这一点。这会让鸟类即使在睡觉的时候也能立即逃离捕食者。)”可知,鸟类即使在睡觉时也能迅速逃脱的主要原因是它们保持大脑的一部分清醒。故选B。
33.细节理解题。根据第三段“So when a bird lowers itself, its talons automatically and involuntarily bend and hold on tightly to the branch, and until the leg is straightened, the talons will not relax. The key behind this mechanism is the bird’s flexor tendons that connect muscles to bones. The flexor tendon stretches, thus bending the bird’s toes.(所以当一只鸟降低身体时,它的爪子会自动且无意识地弯曲并紧紧抓住树枝,直到腿伸直,爪子才会放松。这个机制背后的关键是鸟类的屈肌腱,它将肌肉与骨骼连接起来。屈肌腱伸展,从而使鸟的脚趾弯曲。)”可知,屈肌腱在帮助鸟类在树枝上保持平衡中的作用是伸展使爪子弯曲并锁定。故选A。
根据最后一段“Birds are varied and unique, exhibiting different bodies, physiologies, and behaviors depending on which species, genus, or family one studies. Sleep cycles differ just as widely. While we may not know the whole story yet, there is no denying that it is remarkable that birds manage this balancing act daily.(鸟类是多样化和独特的,根据研究的物种、属或科的不同,它们的身体、生理和行为也不同。

Dear Chris,
How is everything going?

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
I thought they would walk away or tell me to leave. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When I arrived home, my mom asked how my day went. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
If it’s not too much trouble, can I still have fried tofu for lunch tomorrow?” (161 words)
