Umbrellas have had a history of thousands of years. However, who invented the umbrella? There are many different opinions. Some people say that the people of ancient Egypt invented it. Some say the Romans invented it. And some say Luban’s wife invented it in ancient China. There is even an interesting story about its invention in China.
Luban (507 B.C.—444 B.C.) was the most famous craftsman (工匠) in ancient China. One day, Luban and his wife were taking a walk and enjoying the beautiful landscape. Suddenly, it began to rain. Both of them were soaked when they got back home. Luban’s wife said, “If there is something that can protect people from the rain when they are working outdoors, it will be wonderful.” Then Luban said, “That’s easy. I will build many pavilions (亭子).” His wife replied, “That’s a good idea, but it is not convenient. Is it possible to make a movable (可移动的) pavilion which could always follow the people?” She thought all day and all night. One day, she saw some kids playing in the rain and each kid held a big lotus leaf over their head to protect themselves from getting wet. Then she came up with a great idea. So she made the first umbrella in ancient China.
Since the umbrella was invented, it has been part of people’s lives in every corner of the world. Right now, there are many kinds of umbrellas, such as sun umbrellas, kid umbrellas and so on.
How many umbrellas are made every year in the world? Maybe millions or even more. One interesting thing is that most umbrellas in the world are made in China. Shangyu in Zhejiang alone has more than 1,000 umbrella factories and it is called “China Umbrella City”.

On the night of August 14, 2015, everything changed when my friend’s car knocked into a tree with me inside.
I lost most of my left leg, and was bleeding (流血) a lot. After three weeks in hospital, I finally could go home with a false (假的) leg. However, the fight was far from over. More of my left leg got worse. This made it harder to wear my false leg, so I gave it to a girl who couldn’t buy one for herself. The joy of being able to help others was greater than the happiness of wearing it myself.
People often tell me that they’re proud of me for staying strong. But in my mind, staying strong has always been my only choice.
I still remember, on the day I left the hospital, I told myself to always live life to the fullest. So, I tried to help those around me in my own way. In 2021, I even started modeling (当模特). My dream is that one day a little girl will see me in a magazine and say, “Wow, how beautiful she is, and she only has one leg.”

I still remember on the day I left the hospital, I told myself to always live life to the fullest. So, I tried to help those around me in my own way. In 2021, I even started modeling (当模特).
