Passage 2
(24-25九上·云南师范大学实验中学·期末)
The cold is knocking at our doors. We again find ourselves deciding what to wear to protect us against the cold. Animal furs? Of course not. A popular choice in recent years is the fleece (摇粒绒). But where did the material come from? And how did it take over our wardrobes (衣橱)?
In fact, fleece wasn’t sold to the public until 1981. Before fleece, there was wool. People who lived around the Alpine Lakes in Switzerland used wool for clothing as far back as the 7th century BC. Historians believe that it has been keeping our bodies warm before recorded history.
But wool has some disadvantages. First, it takes in water. And when it does, it smells funny. It’s also slow to dry and difficult to clean. Don’t even mention that it makes you feel itchy (痒的).
And people began to search for a better substitute. The ideal material would have none of those problems but would still be able to keep us warm. In the early material produced by Patagonia, a clothing company, a fleece of poor quality was used. The idea came from a fabric (布料) found in a store in Canada. From there, the search for the perfect fabric continued. The choice fell on a material found in a warehouse in Los Angeles. The fabric was being used to make table covers. It looked nothing special but had an interesting texture (质地). Patagonia then turned to fabric factory Malden Mills. Engineers at Malden Mills tested it. They turned polyester yam (聚酯纤维纱线) into a fabric with high quality. In 1981, Polar Fleece was successfully developed.
The fabric could do what wool could, and more. It quickly became a must-have for outdoor protection. Soon after, the world fell in love with the light yet strong fleece. Passage 4
(24-25九上·昭通市昭阳区·期末)
Can you imagine gloves could talk? Do you want to know what it feels like to fly like a bird? We have picked out three interesting inventions to share with you.
Talking Gloves
Four foreign students have created a pair of gloves, which helps people to communicate with those who have hearing and speaking problems. There are sensors (传感器) on the gloves. They recognize (辨认出) sign language and translate it into text on a smartphone. Then the smartphone changes the text to spoken words. So people can understand sign language easily.
Google Glasses
Google Glasses are like a computer built into a pair of glasses. Then the glasses allow you to surf the Internet and make calls without even lifting a finger. The glasses also have a camera and GPS mapping system. Users can take and share photos, check maps and surf the Internet just by moving the eyeballs.
Wingsuits
The suit realizes your dream of flying like a bird. Well, not exactly flying, but gliding (滑翔) through the air. It increases the surface area of the human body, which makes it easier for people to float (漂浮) in the air. Fliers wearing wingsuits can glide one kilometer in about 30 seconds.

(24-25九上·云南腾冲·期末)
An “air taxi” seems like science fiction, but you’ll probably be able to take one in the near future. On February 27, 2024, an eVTOL aircraft finished its first test flight in Guangdong and got a lot of attention from around the world.
The flight started from Shekou Cruise Home Port in Shenzhen to Jiuzhou Port in Zhuhai. The distance (距离) between these two places is about 60 kilometers. The whole trip took about 20 minutes by the eVTOL aircraft. It will be a faster choice for passengers travelling between Shenzhen and Zhuhai in Guangzhou. Travelling by car, however, usually takes about two to three hours.
The eVTOL aircraft looks like a small plane. Unlike a plane, it doesn’t need a long runway to take off and land on the ground. Instead, it can go straight up and down. This new aircraft is powered by electricity. It can travel 250 kilometers on a single charge. It can carry up to five people at a speed of up to 200 kilometers per hour.
The eVTOL aircraft was developed by a high-tech company named Prosperity. The company is applying for a permit (许可证) for an operation. If everything goes well, it hopes that the aircraft will start carrying passengers in 2026.
Moreover, Guangzhou is making efforts to encourage low-altitude flights (低空飞行), which will be used in many areas such as low-altitude tourism, delivery (运输), and farming in the future. Many experts believe that the achievements of low-altitude flights will make a great contribution to the city’s development.

Passage 6
(24-25九上·云南曲靖·期末)
There’s nothing better than a walk in the countryside for lifting our spirits. Connecting with nature can help our mental health (心理健康). For many people, it feels great to take a walk through a forest, but as we admire the trees around us, it’s worth knowing these trees are doing more than just being nice things to look at.
We have already noticed that trees play an important role in taking care of our world—they produce oxygen and clean the air we breathe by taking in about a quarter of all human-caused carbon dioxide emissions (二氧化碳排放).
But there’s more to these trees than we might think. Researchers have discovered that they are actually very smart.
It’s thought that trees use a fungal network (真菌网络) to talk and share resources right under our feet. Under the ground are tree roots, bacteria and super fine threads of fungi. And research has shown that they are all mixed together. They can help each other by sharing “food”, and they can even tell them some coming dangers. Scientists say it’s like the trees are talking to one another.
Ecologist Suzanne Simard has called this network the Wood Wide Web. She discovered that parent trees use this network to help their children. She also found that trees are smart enough to change their behaviour to live in a changing environment.
So it seems trees really are the stars of our natural world, and with around three trillion of them on our planet, it’s time to show them some respect if we want them to grow better.

If you watch the sky for about an hour after the sun goes down, you may see some “moving stars”. But they’re not real stars. They’re man-made satellites (人造卫星) . And the biggest of all is the International Space Station (ISS) . From May to July is the best season to watch the ISS flying over the earth. And people can see it with their eyes.
The ISS is the biggest satellite and scientists want to live on it. They think that the best way to learn more about space is to live there.
When the space station is finished, it will be like a city in space. People will stay and study there with many of the things they have at home. Laboratories, living rooms and power stations are being built. The ISS is the most expensive space program. Billions of dollars are being spent on it every year.
Scientists hope that the ISS will be a stepping stone for future space exploration (探测). “The ISS will help us understand the human body better, explore space and study the earth. It can help us make life on the earth better,” said Kathryn Clark, an ISS scientist.
Sixteen countries are parts of the program: the US, Russia, Canada, Japan, Brazil and 11 European countries. China isn’t an ISS country, but it has helped with some of the experiments. In 2003, China sent some rice up to the ISS to find out what space would do to it.

Passage 9
(24-25九上·云南文山州·期末)
In many people’s eyes, plants are quiet and inactive. They can’t talk. They can’t walk. And they can’t think like us. Then what can they do? A new TV program, The Green Planet, shows the wonderful way that plants behave.
Each plant has its own ways of protecting itself. In the rainforest, different kinds of plants compete for sunlight. Some plants spread their big leaves to reach light. But they are caught up in a vine (藤本植物) that tries to get a ride. As the tree has smooth hairs on its leaves, the vine can’t catch up. Similarly, some trees try to protect themselves in other ways.
Plants also help each other and even communicate. In deserts, the roots (根) of Euphrates poplar trees (胡杨树) are connected. If a Euphrates poplar tree finds water, it will share it with others through the roots. Studies also show that plants use fungus (真菌) as a way to “talk” to each other. If a tomato plant gets a leaf disease, it can tell nearby plants about it. How amazing the plants are!
The TV show not only lets us amaze at the magic plant world but also pushes us to understand that plants are important. “Plants are the needs of all life including ourselves.” said David, the host of the show. It’s time to pay attention to and protect plants.

It also started getting fashionable as more clothing companies created their own kinds. It even became a popular material for pet clothing!
