B Living in Hanau, Germany, 67-year-old Rita Ebel, who uses a wheelchair for most of her mobility, discovered that many local businesses were not accessible after her accident. The common response from shop owners was that she could simply knock on the door for assistance. However, Rita knew that for someone like her, who values independence, this was not a practical solution. Taking initiative, Rita decided to create her own wheelchair ramps (坡道), but with a creative twist. Instead of traditional materials, she began constructing ramps using colorful toy bricks. However, as she started her project, she quickly realized that acquiring enough bricks was a challenge in itself. Many people hold onto their brick collections with fondness. Furthermore, she found that most available sets were not suited for her ram p designs. In a moment of helplessness, she reached out on social media for assistance. To her delight, the response was overwhelming. “My first donor asked how many pieces of bricks I would need to finish my very first ramp,” she shared. After estimating that she might need around 1,000 pieces, she was thrilled when he arrived with two large boxes of toy bricks. Since embarking on this heartwarming effort in 2019, Rita has built numerous ramps, earning her the lovely title of “Brick Oma”, or “Brick Grandma”. Her colorful creations have transformed shops across Hanau, including sweet shops and grocery stores, making them more accessible, one brick at a time. The colorful ramps also serve as a helpful visual cue for those with low vision, signaling an incline (倾斜) ahead. Building a ram p typically takes Rita just three to four hours, and as donations continue to pour in, she is grateful for the support. Her landlord even provided her with extra space to store the growing brick collection. Rita Ebel’s journey is a beautiful reminder of the power of community, creativity, and the firm spirit to uplift others. Through her colorful brick ramps, she is not only paving the way for greater accessibility but also spreading happiness and hope throughout her beloved Hanau. 4. What does Rita lay emphasis on? A. Comfort. B. Assistance. C. Independence. D. Adaptation. 5. What initially prevented Rita building her ramps? A. Lack of building materials. B. Trouble in technical knowledge. C. Time-consuming design process. D. High costs of traditional materials. 6. What does the underlined part “embarking on” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Getting around. B. Starting up. C. Sharing in. D. Going over. 7. Which of the following can best describe Rita’s ramps? A. Wasteful and expensive. B. Solid and durable. C. Creative and technological. D. Functional and eye-catching. C The way people express emotions while helping others can influence whether their assistance is welcomed, hated, or rewarded, according to new research from Washington State University’s Carson College of Business. “Recipients (受助者) are not passive; they pick up on emotional signals and use them to infer why someone is helping,” said Stephen Lee, assistant professor of management at Washington State University. “If they sense the helper is motivated by self-interest or responsibility, it changes the way they perceive the help and whether they are willing to return the favor.” The findings were based on three studies and a pilot study involving working adults and student participants. Participants were asked to either recall real-world helping experiences, take part in an interactive task in a behavioral lab, or respond to a situation interacting with a coworker. Across all the studies, socially engaging emotions consistently led to perceptions of prosocial (亲社会的) motives, stronger relationships, and greater willingness to reward. For leaders and managers, the study highlights the role of emotional expressions in shaping a culture of cooperation. Rather than encouraging helping behavior for its own sake, Lee recommends fostering a workplace environment where employees feel genuine gratitude for their colleagues and develop a natural sense of sympathy for others’ challenges. “Helping that stems from gratitude or concern for others is more likely to create positive, lasting relationships,” Lee said. “If leaders can model those kinds of emotions in how they help their teams, it sets the tone for a more supportive and engaged workplace.” At the individual level, employees can also benefit from reflecting on their own experiences of receiving help or by practicing perspective-taking — approaches that naturally foster more authentic emotions and social connections. “When we express genuine gratitude or sympathy, we’re not just benefiting ourselves,” Lee said. “We’re strengthening our workplace relationships and building a more resilient culture of cooperation.” 8. What can we know about recipients of help? A. They don’t care how help is offered. B. They feel it necessary to return the favor. C. They dislike receiving help from strangers. D. They can detect motives behind the help. 9. What does the study suggest about expressing positive emotions while helping? A. It makes the task easier for the helper. B. It improves the recipient’s self-respect. C. It encourages the recipient to help others. D. It reduces the need for direct communication. 10. Why does the author mention perspective-taking? A. To explain why helping is difficult. B. To show how to improve honest emotions. C. To prove that employees need more training. D. To discuss how coworkers can avoid conflicts. 11. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Emotional Expressions Shape How Help Is Received B. Strengthening Relationship Through Help with Heart C. Expressing Emotions at Work Determines Productivity D. Building Bridges Through Genuine Emotional Expression D From mushrooms that cast a soft green glow to plankton (浮游生物) that gives off sparkling blue, glowing plants are nothing new for nature. Now, scientists are bringing that light to houseplants. Reporting in the Cell Press journal Matter on August 27, researchers crafted glow-in-the-dark succulents (肉质植物) that recharge in sunlight. Injected with light-emitting compounds, the plants can shine in various colors and match a small night light at their brightest. The simple, low-cost method may help lay the foundation for sustainable, plant-based lighting systems. “Picture the world of science fiction movie Avatar, where glowing plants light up an entire ecosystem,” says first author Shuting Liu of South China Agricultural University. “We wanted to make that vision possible using materials we already work with in the lab. Imagine glowing trees replacing streetlights.” Glowing greenery isn’t a new idea. Past studies have designed similar plants using genetic engineering. But the glow is often weak and is typically only available in green. The methods were also complex and costly. Instead of changing cells to glow through genetic modification, researchers from South China Agricultural University used afterglow phosphor (磷光粉) particles — materials similar to those found in glow-in-the-dark toys. These compounds absorb light and release it slowly over time. For the particles to travel through leaf tissues, the researchers had to get the size just right: around 7 micrometers, roughly the width of a red blood cell. “Smaller particles moved easily within the plant but they had low brightness,” says leading researcher Shuting Liu. “Larger particles glowed brighter but couldn’t travel far inside the plant.” The glowing succulents’ light fades over time, and the team is still studying the long-term safety of the materials for the plants. Still, the concept could offer a sustainable alternative for low-intensity lighting in pathways, gardens, or indoor decoration. The team is also exploring how the method can light up plants beyond succulents. 12. What can we learn about glowing plants from the first paragraph? A. They are single-colored. B. They are a natural phenomenon. C. They are rarely found in the wild. D. They are completely artificial creations. 13. How did Shuting Liu introduce her study on glowing plants? A. By stating facts. B. By defining a concept. C. By providing statistics. D. By imagining a scene. 14. What is the main advantage of the new method compared to previous approaches? A. It is simpler and less expensive. B. It produces more colorful light. C. It is more environmentally friendly. D. It suits a wider range of plant species. 15. What should be paid special attention to when researchers choose phosphor particles? A. Weight. B. Color. C. Quantity. D. Measure. Making decisions can be challenging for everyone, even for those people of achievement. ____16____. But my mom, a high school history teacher, disagreed. “Alex,” she would say over dinner, “the real respect is spoken through the body. It’s in your posture when you stand and your attention when you listen.” I would shrug (耸肩), not really getting it. I never thought of helping clear the table after meals, simply drifting to the couch while she worked alone in the kitchen. To me, saying “thanks for dinner” seemed enough. My best friend Leo and I communicated with playful smiles and eyes rolled at boring adult talk. It seemed enough. Everything changed at our school’s community fair. Leo and I were lazily sitting behind our fundraising table. We chatted aimlessly, barely acknowledging the passing crowd. The donation box in front of us remained embarrassingly light. Our fundraiser was failing. Then an elderly man paused at our display. Remembering my mom’s words, I made a choice. I stopped talking, stood up straight, and offered him a sincere smile. “Are you interested in supporting our team, sir?” I said. His serious face softened. He made a small donation and left with a nod. It felt like a tiny victory. The real shock came in history class a week later. Our teacher announced a guest speaker. My jaw dropped when Mr Evans, the man from the fair, walked in—a retired museum curator (馆长)! My heart raced. Did he remember me as that lazy boy? He spoke passionately, using his hands to shape stories from the past. During the Q&A session, I gathered my courage and raised my hand, making sure to sit up and meet his eyes. He recognized me instantly and gave me a warm, knowing smile. After class, Mr Evans waved me over. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Back home, seeing my mom preparing our dinner, I went to the kitchen. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 高二考试英语试卷 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? C. Sharing in. D. Building Bridges Through Genuine Emotional Expression 【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11. A. Weight. B. Color. C. Quantity. D. Measure. 12. B 13. D 14. A 15. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】After class, Mr. Evans waved me over. “That smile was genuine at the fair, which made an old man feel truly seen," he said. He then shared his deepest feeling in his museum — a simple, sincere nod from a visitor often meant more to him than any oral praise. “It's a silent conversation. Young man, start one with a smile," he added. Walking home, his words echoed in my mind, weaving together with my mom's dinner-time theory. I realized they were both telling the same truth-our bodies have a silent vocabulary, and I was just beginning to learn how to speak it. Back home, seeing my mom preparing our dinner, I went to the kitchen. I picked up a knife to help chop vegetables. As we worked side by side, I stood straighter and listened more carefully to her cooking tips. I washed the greens while she seasoned the soup, our movements flowing naturally in the cozy kitchen. When she finished explaining how to slice the carrots, I looked into her eyes and said, “Thank you, Mom-for everything." She paused, and her eyes softened just as Mr. Evans' had. At that quiet moment, I understood this unspoken language of respect needed no translation, just a willing heart and observant eye. 1】 “That smile was genuine at the fair, which made an old man feel truly seen,” he said.(运用了which引导定语从句) 【高分句型 2】 I washed the greens while she seasoned the soup, our movements flowing naturally in the cozy kitchen.(运用了 while 引导的时间状语从句和独立主格) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
