Did you know that some people don’t do their reading assignments (指定的作业)? It’s shocking, but it’s true. Some students don’t even read short texts that they are assigned in class. There are many reasons for this. They may be distracted or bored. They may be unwilling to focus. They may be unconfident readers. Whatever the reason, it has to stop today. Here’s why.
Reading stimulates (刺激) your mind. It is like a workout for your brain. When people get old, their muscles become worse. They get weaker and their strength leaves them. Exercise can prevent this loss. The same thing happens to people’s brains when they get older. Reading strengthens your brain and prevents declines (下降) in brain power and speed.
You can benefit from reading in the near-term too. Reading provides knowledge. Knowledge is power. Therefore, reading can make you a more powerful person. You can learn to do new things by reading. Do you want to make video games? Do you want to design clothing? Reading can teach you all this and more. But you have to get good at reading, and the only way to get good at something is to practice.
Read everything that you can at school, regardless of whether you find it interesting. Reading expands your vocabulary. Even a “boring” text can teach you new words. Having a larger vocabulary will help you better express yourself. You will be able to speak, write, and think more intelligently. What’s boring about that?
Do not just doubt a text because it is unfamiliar to you. Each time you read, you are exposed to new ideas and perspectives (看法). Reading can change the way that you understand the world. It can give you a broader perspective on things. It can make you worldlier. You can learn how people live in faraway places. You can learn about cultures different from your own.
Reading has a calming effect. It is good for your state of mind. It can lower your stress levels and help you relax. You can escape (摆脱) from your troubles for a moment when you read, and it’s a positive escape. The benefits of reading far outweigh those of acting like a fool. So do yourself a favor: the next time you get a reading assignment, take as much as you can from it. Squeeze it for every drop of knowledge that it contains. Then move on to the next one.
1.What are the benefits of reading for our brain?
2.How can we get good at reading?

阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Research has shown that adults undervalue the influence of random (随意的) acts of kindness. They think that their actions won’t make too much of a difference. But small acts of kindness have more influence than they think.
In 2023, researchers Margaret Echelbarger and Nick Epley published a study. It described an experiment they did to find out if kids also undervalued the influence of random acts of kindness.
The experiment took place at the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry, in Chicago. Researchers spoke with 101 kids who were visiting the museum. Each kid was offered two pencils. The kids could take both pencils home. Or they could perform an act of kindness: allowing the researchers to give one of the pencils to a stranger. The kid could point out the person who should get the pencil.
Before giving away the pencil, the researchers asked the kids to guess how “big” their acts of kindness would feel to the person who got the pencil. Would the person be happy? Or would the gift feel like no big deal? Many kids had trouble guessing. Some of the kids said, “I’d like to give my pencil… but I’m not sure how they’re going to feel.”
People were happy to receive the pencils. In fact, they were much happier than the givers guessed. Besides, the givers said they felt a sense of satisfaction (满足) after doing a good deed (行为). “It shows the power of these small, random acts of kindness,” Echelbarger said. “Like, ‘You could have chosen anyone, but you chose me.’”
Echelbarger and Epley’s study proves that doing good feels good. This is true for the kid on the receiving end of a good deed as well as for the kid who performs it.
Echelbarger hopes the study will encourage kids to spread kindness, especially in ways that might feel small or unimportant. She said people were usually thankful when someone said hello, held a door for them, or offered an unexpected compliment (赞美).
1.Why did Margaret Echelbarger and Nick Epley do an experiment in 2023?
2.What was each kid in the experiment offered?
3.How did the kids in the experiment perform an act of kindness?
4.Would you like to do small acts of kindness? Why or why not? (Please give two reasons.)
【答案】1.To find out if kids also undervalued the influence of random acts of kindness. 2.Each kid was offered two pencils. 3.By allowing the researchers to give one of the pencils to a stranger. 4.Yes. Because small acts of kindness can make a big difference and I feel a sense of satisfaction after doing a good deed.

Strength training, a type of exercise, is used to build strength, power, and endurance (耐力). Many adults do strength training, but is it safe and useful for children? People used to think that strength training was not useful and even dangerous for children, possibly causing injuries that could affect their growth. However, the latest study shows that strength training does improve children’s overall health.
When children do strength training, they get stronger as their muscles (肌肉) grow! The strength training can most likely make them better, faster and stronger. “It is so beneficial for their bodies, like their bones, joints and metabolic (新陈代谢的) health,” says Becca Rigg, a professional trainer at a fitness center. She knows all about the positive effects of strength training. She takes her kids to strength workouts two to three times per week.
“I also love the message teenagers receive when exercising this way: They may feel more confident when they finish such hard and tiring training. It is also rewarding for them to see results. They are, indeed, getting stronger while having a better image,” explains Rigg, “Sometimes they make strength training part of their life and it’s easier for them to get involved in the training later.”
How do kids get started? Just like other activities, it is very important to learn the correct way to do it. For strength training, it is a must to learn from an experienced coach because the coach can make sure children do movements safely and correctly. In the early stage, it is best for teens to simply use their body weight, such as doing push-ups and squats. Bodyweight movements can then be made more difficult by adding equipment or weights, for example, a barbell or dumbbells.
So, let’s cheer our kids on as they lift, pull, and push their way to a stronger future. With our support and care, they’ll grow up ready to take on whatever life throws at them.
1.What does the latest study show about strength training?
2.How often does Becca Rigg take her kids to strength workouts?
3.Why is it a must to learn from an experienced coach?
4.As a teenager, would you like to make strength training part of your life? Why? (Please give two reasons.)
【答案】1.The latest study shows that strength training does improve children’s overall health. 2.She takes her kids to strength workouts two to three times per week. 3.Because an experienced coach can make sure children do movements safely and correctly. 4.Yes, I’d like to. Because it can enhance my self-confidence and benefit my health.

Students Explore Mars
Human beings have been curious about Mars since the planet was first discovered. For many years, scientists have been working toward ways to best explore the red planet.
A group of senior students from Beijing have shown great interest in Mars and started a project to explore it. Wang Taozhi, 17, the leading figure in this project, put forward a plan to develop a system that is expected to use AI to study pictures of common minerals (矿物) on Mars. It is also hoped to classify (分类) these minerals. “The challenge is to master knowledge about computer coding, AI and algorithms and how to put this knowledge into practice. We failed many times but we finally succeeded,” said Wang.
When Wang Taozhi was in Junior 1. he learned basic knowledge of C++, a programming language, in a computer technology course. He was interested in programming and spent hours a day studying it. Wang then joined the Maker Space of his school, a platform that encourages students to create something new with the help of modern technology. In the Maker Space, he learned more about robotics and coding, developing a software which helped teachers in class.
Wang also learned necessary information through other means in his spare time, including trustworthy journals and even online videos. “I read papers on minerals,” Wang said. “Also, I gained AI basics through some videos on Bilibili.”
To successfully finish the project, good teamwork is important. Wang Taozhi and his teammates You Zhibin and Zhang Beining had a hard time arranging their meetings since they had different class timetables and study plans.
To overcome this challenge, they carried out different tasks based on each person’s strengths, set a deadline and set up regular meetings. It’s hard to balance one’s studies and personal interests, but they have found a way to do it.
“Finishing the project was not easy, but it was an opportunity to help students become actively engaged students willing to solve problems instead of just being passive learners,” said Li Ning, the mentor of this project.
“In the beginning, I borrowed others’ ideas but now I come up with my own ideas and have made them practical,” Wang said.

a drone
Liam Carter, a 14-year-old nature lover, was hiking in the mountains when he saw the terrible effects of a recent wildfire. Burned trees and barren (贫瘠的) land could go as far as the eye could see. Liam felt heartbroken but also decided to do something about it.
He began researching and discovered that wildfires destroy millions of acres of forests each year, leaving animals homeless and the natural environment destroyed. To make a difference, Liam decided to work out a solution.
After months of hard work, he developed a machine to help stop wildfires: a robotic drone fitted with thermal sensors (温度探测仪). The drone can fly over forests, discover unusual heat patterns, and send signals to fire departments before small fires grow out of control.
The most creative character of Liam’s drone is its AI system. “I wanted to build something that could react faster than humans and make forests safer,” Liam explains. Using a set of mathematical instructions or rules which helps to work out an answer to a problem, the drone can tell the difference between normal heat sources, like the sun or campfires, and dangerous wildfire hotspots.
Liam’s science teacher, Mr. Dawson, is amazed by his ability to continue trying to do so. “It’s not often to see someone so young take on such a big challenge,” he says. “Liam’s creativity and persistence (坚持) are truly encouraging.”
Liam’s journey wasn’t easy. He had problems with programming the AI and experienced several technical failures. But he kept improving his design, learning from his mistakes, and asking for advice from local engineers and firefighters.
In the future, Liam hopes to develop his project by creating a network of drones that can check larger areas and even plant new trees in destroyed forests. "Nature is so important to all of us,” Liam says. “I want to use technology to give back to it.”
Liam is grateful that his family encouraged his interest in nature and technology. “They’ve always supported my crazy ideas,” he says with a smile.

Four Great New Inventions
China’s “Four Great New Inventions” in modern times have made the daily life of the public more and more convenient. They are the high-speed railway (HSR), shopping online, shared bikes and mobile phone payment.
Living in Singapore, I had only read about these technologies through newspapers, TV, and the Internet. But last October, I traveled to China and had the chance to experience all of them for the first time.
As it was Golden Week, I quickly learned that getting a train ticket at the station was nearly impossible because of high demand (高需求). Luckily, I was able to buy a ticket to Beijing online and pay for it through Alipay, which was much more convenient than I expected. It was even cheaper than it was bought in the station. Then we got on the high-speed train. I was shocked at its speed and quietness. There was no noise which the train made while running. It was reported that China has the longest high-speed railway in the world, which is known as a “name card” for China.
China’s HSR has also gone abroad. In 2014, China finished building its first foreign high-speed rail in Turkey. In June 2015, China and Russia agreed to build the 770 km of high-speed railway connecting Moscow and Kazan. In October 2015, China helped Indonesia to build a high-speed rail between Jakarta and Bandung.
Did I feel bored during the trip on the train? Not at all. I bought many cheap and good things in Taobao and Tmall on the Internet through my mobile phone. It’s amazing that there are oceans of products in Taobao and Tmall.
Soon we arrived in Beijing. We got on a bus near the train station. After getting off the bus, my friend told me that the bus stop is a little bit far from his home. I thought we would have to spend much money going to his home on a taxi, but it seemed that he wasn’t worried about that. He showed me some bikes on the side of the street. They are called shared bikes. We used the mobile phones to scan the Quick Response code (扫描二维码) on shared bikes, and then we rode the bikes home. It was so cool!
1.What are China’s “Four Great New Inventions”?
2.When did China finish building its first foreign high-speed rail?

Do you like poems? What do you know about bamboo? Let’s read the poem Bamboo in the Rock by Chinese poet Zheng Xie.
竹石
(郑燮)
咬定青山不放松,立根原在破岩中。
千磨万击还坚劲,任尔东西南北风。
Bamboo in the Rock
(By Zheng Xie)
Upright stands the bamboo amid green mountains steep,
Its toothlike root in broken rock is planted deep.
It’s strong and firm though struck and beaten without rest,
Careless of the wind from north or south; east or west.
(Translated by Xu Yuanchong)
“Bamboo in the Rock,” is a Chinese poem by a man named Zheng Xie, often called Zheng Banqiao. He was born in 1693. Besides being a great artist and poet, Zheng was also a government worker during a time in China called the Qing Dynasty. He didn’t like the unfair things he saw happening in the government, so he started making art and writing poems about things like bamboo, which were easy to understand but had deep meanings.
His poem paints a picture of bamboo growing strong even though it’s in a tough spot, squeezed within rocks on a mountain. No matter what difficulties the bamboo faces, like bad weather hitting it from every side, it keeps standing up straight. The bamboo is a symbol of strength and determination because it remains firm and doesn’t break under pressure.
The poem is full of beautiful words about nature, but it’s also there to teach us something important just like the bamboo, people should stay strong and focused even when life is challenging. By facing hard times, we can build our inner strength, just like the strong bamboo.
Young people can learn a lot from this poem because it shows them the importance of staying strong and determined, even when things get tough. The poem reminds teenagers that tests and difficulties can help them grow even stronger. It is an inspiring message for them to remain brave during hard times and never give up, just like bamboo standing tall among the challenges.

Leonardo da Vinci was a genius (天才): wildly imaginative, passionately curious and creative across multiple disciplines—painting, architecture, aeronautics, and engineering. However, the word “genius” minimizes (贬低) him by making it seem as if he were touched by lightning. His early biographer made this mistake: “Sometimes, in a supernatural fashion, a single person is gifted by heaven with beauty, politeness, and talent in such abundance that seems that his every act is divine (天赐的).”
In fact, the self-taught Leonardo’s genius was shaped by his own will and ambition (雄心). It did not come from being the divine recipient, like Newton or Einstein. Part of what made Leonardo a genius, what set him apart (与众不同) from people who are only smart, was creativity. His talent for combining observation with fantasy allowed him to make unexpected leaps (飞跃) that related things seen to things unseen.
Leonardo was also a very human genius. He made mistakes. He left a trail of unfinished projects, flying machines that never flew, tanks that never rolled. “Tell me if ever I did a thing...” “Tell me if anything was ever made.” His imperfect humanity makes Leonardo more accessible.
Even though we may never be able to match his talents, we can learn from him and try to be more like him. His life offers a wealth of lessons. Seek knowledge for its own sake. Not all knowledge needs to be useful. Sometimes it should be pursued (追求) for pure pleasure. Leonardo did not need to know how heart valves work to paint the Mona Lisa, nor did he need to figure out how fossils got to the top of mountains to produce Virgin of the Rocks. By allowing himself to be driven by pure curiosity, he got to explore more horizons and see more connections. Keep a childlike sense of wonder. At a certain point in life, most of us quit puzzling over everyday phenomena. We might enjoy the beauty of a blue sky, but we no longer bother to wonder why it is that color. Leonardo did. Be curious, observe things, see things unseen, respect facts, be open to mystery...We can never learn enough from Leonardo.
1.According to the passage, what shaped Leonardo’s genius?
2.What set Leonardo apart from people who are only smart?
3.Why was Leonardo a very human genius?
4.Which of Leonardo’s qualities do you admire most? Why? ( Please give two reasons)
【答案】1.His own will and ambition. 2.Creativity. 3.He made mistakes. 4.I appreciate the quality of being curious most. Because being curious can force me to keep learning new knowledge. If I am curious about one problem, I will refer to some books to get a better understanding of the knowledge.
【导语】本是一篇说明文,文章主要介绍了达芬奇是一个有创造力,有人类本性的天才。
1.根据“In fact, the self-taught Leonardo’s genius was shaped by his own will and ambition (雄心).”可知是他自己的意志力和也行。故填His own will and ambition.
2.根据“Part of what made Leonardo a genius, what set him apart (与众不同) from people who are only smart, was creativity.”可知使他与那些只聪明的人区别开来的部分原因是创造力。故填Creativity.
3.根据“Leonardo was also a very human genius. He made mistakes.”可知,会犯错误使得他是一个非常人性化的天才。故填He made mistakes.

Great Grandmother Still Studying
At the age of 95, Nola Ochs became one of the world’s oldest college graduates. Ochs received her bachelor’s degree (学士学位) in general studies and history at Fort Hays State University in May, 2007.
At her graduation ceremony, the crowd gave her a warm welcome. And they kept standing until the names of all 2176 graduates were read. Her granddaughter, Alexandra Ochs, also appeared on the list. Nola was interviewed by a famous magazine. She seemed a little embarrassed by all the attention. “I was just another student,” she said in the interview. However, none of the other graduates was entered into the Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest college graduate at that time. The former record holder was Mozelle Richardson, who got a degree from the University of Oklahoma in 2004 at the age of 90.
Nola has a family that includes 3 sons, 13 grandchildren and 15 even younger ones. After the death of her husband, she started taking classes sometimes but not often in 1972 at Dodge City Community College. When she moved to Fort Hays in 2006, she completed the final 30 hours which were required for her degree.
Kansas Board of Regents member Dan Lykins addressed the graduates and praised Ochs’ achievements at the graduation ceremony. “Follow the footsteps of people like Nola and never give up,” Lykins said.
However, this is not the end of her story. After taking time to help with the family wheat harvest, Ochs went back to university and started pursuing her master’s degree (硕士学位), 2010. Nola Qchs continued taking classes until she was 100 and died at the age of 105 in 2016. And at that time, she had achieved her goal of writing a book about her life experiences. When asked for her life advice, she said “Buy the plane ticket!”. She meant that people should take advantage of life’s opportunities and not wait until tomorrow.
1.When did Nola Ochs receive her bachelor’s degree?

Staying productive during school breaks can be a game-changer for teens. While rest is necessary, an unorganized break can lead to boredom and a shortage of fulfillment (成就感). Instead, balancing relaxation with productive activities can help teens make the most of their time off. In this guide, we will explore some ways teens can achieve the balance during their breaks, ensuring they return to school refreshed and ready to shine.
Setting Goals and Planning
One of the first steps to staying productive during a school break is setting clear and achievable goals. Goals give direction and purpose to daily activities.
Creating a daily timetable is useful. A timetable can help teens organize their days by allowing them to set different periods for different activities. Using tools like planners or digital apps can make it easier to stay organized and record progress.
Regularly reflecting (反思) on what has been achieved can be motivating. Teens should take time at the end of each day or week to review their progress and celebrate their achievements. Reflection helps teens not only build confidence but also make some changes to their plans.
Academic (学业的) Activities
Reading is a powerful way to stay productive while expanding knowledge and improving skills. Teens can choose a variety of reading materials to keep their minds active. Writing is another excellent way to stay productive and express creativity. Teens can keep diaries, write short stories, or even start a blog.
Personal Development
Learning new skills can be both exciting and productive. Whether it’s cooking or public speaking, it prepares teens for future challenges.
Staying physically active is important for overall well-being. Teens can join a sports team or explore the outdoors, which can lead to a healthy lifestyle.
Volunteer work in the community can be highly rewarding (有益的). It not only positively influences the community, but also helps teens develop a sense of responsibility.
Relaxation and Self-Care
Relaxation and self-care are very important. Practicing mindfulness, taking care of mental health and enjoying leisure (娱乐) activities can help teens get refreshed.
Balancing relaxation with productive activities is key to a fulfilling break. Encourage teens to listen to their needs and better their timetables accordingly, ensuring they have time for both productive tasks and leisure.
1.What can an unorganized break lead to?

The United Nations World Tourism Day is a day for thinking about tourism and its effects on people and places. It is celebrated every year on 27 September. On this day, people meet to discuss tourism and try to solve the problems that tourism creates. The meetings are organized by a different country or a group of countries every year.
Tourism is a huge industry. In China, more and more people are likely to travel during holidays. According to a survey in 2023, there are about 50,000 travelling companies. Among them, 1.6 million people are in service of Class-A Tourist Attractions.
Tourism has a lot of advantages and helps local areas much. It gets money from what visitors pay for rooms, food and things to remember. This gives jobs to local people. When tourists are interested in local culture, it gets shared and spreads. For example, they may watch local folk performances. With more tourists, roads and public things get nicer. The area becomes more well-known. Then, more money comes in to build new and better facilities (设施) like modern museums or theaters, which further attracts more visitors and helps the long-term development of the local area.
However, every coin has two sides. Tourism is not a completely positive thing, as well.
Some places receive millions of tourists a year, which creates problems for local people. Local people may feel not convenient with a large number of tourists on the roads, because it’s hard for local people to get to work or school. Tourism can be bad for the environment, too. Natural areas are destroyed to make space to build hotels and tourist facilities. More tourism means more crowds, noise, rubbish and pollution.
Importantly, tourists can help develop tourism in the long run by choosing more sustainable (可持续的) ways of visiting places to benefit the city and local people more. Sustainable tourism is great. Tourists can use less plastic, take green transport like bikes. What’s more, they should support local shops and hotels, respect local culture and protect nature. Lu Yuan, a college student, did a quick tour around the city of Chengdu during the weekend.
“Chengdu is perfect for ‘special forces style tourism’ because there are good places to take pictures, and the whole city is an amazing food court,” Lu said.
Recently, a new kind of tourism called special forces style tourism is becoming popular in China. This new kind of tourism means visiting tourist attractions in a short, intense period. Lu Yuan visited three local attractions on the day she arrived, and spent the second day to see the pandas. Before catching the train home, she also did some shopping and enjoyed a hearty dinner at a famous local restaurant.
People who like taking photos and making recordings may choose this kind of tourism. With the popularity of social media, people prefer presenting their photos and get “likes” from their friends through social circles. At the same time, tourist attractions provide some special photo slots (打卡点) to attract visitors. Therefore, special forces style tourism has become a way for people to show their lives and experiences by sharing photos and recordings, which makes people get a sense of satisfaction.
Not all Chinese people enjoy special forces style tourism. Many people prefer to take a long vacation to go to a place for detailed tourism and experience the local way of life. They tend to enjoy slow-paced (慢速的) deep travel, by staying for a long time to gain a deeper understanding of local culture, customs, and experience local life. The slow-paced travel focuses more on feelings and experiences.
However, special forces tours do not necessarily mean that you have not fully experienced the charm of tourism. People remember the details of their travels more deeply by taking photos and recording them. These photos have become an important way for them to recall their travels, so they are not just looking at them without feeling them.
The value of tourism lies in discovery, experience, and perception (感知). Therefore, whether it is special forces style tourism or slow-paced deep travel, it is worth respecting and understanding. We should all feel the scenery of the journey with our hearts, see with our eyes and walk with our feet.
1.What does “special forces style tourism” mean?
2.Who may choose the special forces style tourism according to the passage?
3.What does the value of tourism lie in?
4.Would you like to choose special forces style tourism or slow-paced deep travel? Why? (Please give two reasons.)

The Power of Hope
Have you noticed the mornings are slowly getting lighter? Being hopeful that spring is around the corner and warmer, brighter days are ahead is a powerful feeling. This is because hope gives us the strength to be positive, even when things don’t go our way.
Hope is a positive feeling that things will get better. It’s more than just wishful thinking; hope means taking action and believing you have the power to achieve your goals. “When I’m hopeful, it makes me see the brightness in myself,” says Jonah, aged eight, “It’s good to be hopeful because it gives you a chance to be happy about things.” Charles Snyder, a psychologist (an expert in how we think) studied hopeful thinking and said it has three main parts: having a goal, thinking up different ways to achieve it and believing in yourself even when things go wrong.
Snyder called hope a “rainbow of the mind,” because it “lifts our spirits and makes us think of what is possible.” Being hopeful about something, like trying out a new sport or hobby, takes courage because you’re taking a step into the unknown. This helps you work out what’s important to you, as well as making you more confident. Studies show that being hopeful also helps you learn better at school, build strong friendships and feel less stressed.
Hope is a skill you can learn. Hope expert David Feldman suggests starting by working towards a goal that’s important to you, then thinking up different ways to achieve it. So if you hope to be a chef one day, for example, aim to learn one new recipe a week. Staying focused on your goal takes energy, so eat healthily and get plenty of sleep. If you start to feel hopeless, get inspired by people who have already succeeded or tell someone who supports you so they can help you improve. Finally, make use of your imagination and picture yourself achieving your goal. Picturing success in the future is hope in action.
1.How many main parts does hopeful thinking have?

3.How do you get enough energy to stay focused on your goal?
4.Who do you think is always positive around you? Why? (Give at least two reasons.)

What Is Chinese Acupressure Massage (穴位按摩)? — Tui Na
Have you been experiencing a high-stress level and looking for ways to relieve it? You are probably considering therapy (治疗). One of the types of therapy that can help you relieve stress is Shiatsu. It is a Chinese acupressure massage style that means finger pressure.
According to Chinese medicine, the human body contains meridians (中医经脉). The Chinese believe that a particular energy force called qi runs along the meridians. Performing acupressure massage enables the energy that tends to get stuck at different points to flow. People use this form of massage therapy to improve patients’ whole feeling of being comfortable, healthy and happy. It involves using thumb and finger techniques. If energy flow gets stuck, the body fails to maintain the balance required to deal with different health issues. Performing Shiatsu can help combat (减轻) this.
Since Shiatsu improves the flow of energy in the body, therapists believe that it can help manage different conditions. Therapists use Shiatsu to help minimize muscle stiffness (僵硬), menstrual cramps, and headache in patients.
Many experts also use it to treat low back pain, cancer-related fatigue, and pregnancy symptoms such as morning sickness.
According to most experts, Chinese acupressure massage works. Even clinical evidence proves that Shiatsu is effective in dealing with such conditions. Most Chinese believe that acupressure massage treats the body and spirit and can also help regulate emotions.
If you have a serious health problem, you should first consult with a doctor before going for acupressure massage therapy. Since acupressure is a complementary (补充的) type of treatment, you should not only depend on it, especially when you have a serious condition.
You should avoid acupressure if you have problems such as a rash, burns, open wound, blood cancer, fever, athlete’s foot, or uncontrolled diabetes. Doing it while pregnant can be uncomfortable due to challenges such as difficulty lying on your back. If you are feeling dizzy, you should be careful during acupressure massage therapy.
While some people practice acupressure by choosing professionals, some prefer at-home Shiatsu massagers. Though both options work, acupressure with a professional’s help is better since the expert can transfer energy and a sense of healing through their personal touch.
1.What does acupressure massage mean?
2.What can Shiatsu improve?
3.Why shouldn’t you only depend on acupressure massage therapy when you have a serious problem?
4.If you feel uncomfortable, will you try acupressure massage? Why or why not?
【答案】1.It means finger pressure. 2.Shiatsu improves the flow of energy in the body. 3.Acupressure is a complementary type of treatment. 4.I will try acupressure massage. Because I believe acupressure massage treats the body and spirit and can also help regulate emotions. (答案不唯一)

Imagine watching a movie in a foreign language or attending a lecture where the speaker talks fast, the subtitles (字幕) appear directly on your glasses. Isn’t that amazing?
Recently, an ordinary yet “magical” pair of glasses—the AR Smart Glasses—has hit the market, which goes far beyond regular translation tools by offering hands—free, screen—free, real—time interactive translation.
The AR Smart Glasses are lightweight and comfortable to wear. They look just like regular glasses, but the “magic” hidden within them can’t be ignored (忽视).
The coolest feature (特色) of the AR Smart Glasses is their special translator. When people talk with someone, they can just point the glasses’ camera at the person they’re talking to, and the translation appears on the screen. When people visit a new city wearing AR Smart Glasses, they can simply look at any text, and a translation quickly appears in their view. If they get lost and need directions, the glasses can connect with GPS apps and show them translated directions right in front of their eyes. Even for language learners, it would be wonderful to practice a new language by seeing the words they hear being translated simultaneously (同步地) Learning a language can become quicker, easier, and more certain.
Since translation tools like the AR Smart Glasses help people understand words easily, some people start to question whether it’s still necessary to learn English, or any other foreign languages. In fact, knowing a new language is more than just that. When you speak a language fluently, you understand the way people talk, the jokes they make, and the special meanings behind their words. This helps you connect with people better and make real friends. Also, being able to speak more than one language makes you smarter. It helps you think in new ways and solve problems more easily. In a word, learning a language isn’t just about understanding words. More importantly, it’s about real connections with native speakers and a different point of view to see the world.

This summer I read a book called The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. It tells a touching story told through the eyes of a dog named Enzo.
Enzo lives with his owner Denny, a professional car racer and experiences the ups and downs of life with him. He sees Denny work hard to succeed and go through the unexpected death of his wife.
The book shows the heartwarming relationship between Enzo and Denny. Denny treats Enzo as a close friend and family member, telling him his secret of racing in the rain. Enzo is loyal (忠诚的) to his owner. He always supports and comforts Denny in his own way during the darkest periods of Denny’s life. Seeing their special relationship moved me a lot.
While reading, I discovered that the art of racing in the rain is a metaphor (比喻). When it “rains” in life, unexpected challenges suddenly come, just like how a car skids (打滑) during a race. What can you do? Denny, a master (大师) of racing in the rain, taught me a lot about such challenges.
Stein writes in the book: “There is no dishonor (丢脸的) in losing the race. There is only dishonor in not racing because you are afraid to lose.” From his words, I learned that we should be brave when facing challenges instead of running away from them. Besides, we need to look on the bright side because, as Stein says, “The car goes where your eyes go.” This means that how we view difficulties influences the result.
The Art of Racing in the Rain is a book about love and life. It touched me and taught me a lot.
1.Who is the writer of The Art of Racing in the Rain?
2.How does Denny treat Enzo?
3.What does “The car goes where your eyes go” mean?
4.What’s your favourite book? Why do you like it? (Please list at least two reasons)
【答案】1.Garth Stein. 2.Denny treats Enzo as a close friend and family member. 3.This means that how we view difficulties influences the result. 4.My favourite book is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. It’s a great story that shows how friends can help each other. And its language is funny. I learned important lessons about life from this book.

3.How can reading improve our state of mind?
4.What do you think of reading? Why? (Please give two reasons.)

1.What is Wang Taozhi’s system expected to do?
2.When did Wang Taozhi learn basic knowledge of C++?
3.Why did Wang Taozhi and his teammates have a hard time arranging their meetings?
4.What do you think of Wang Taozhi? Why?(Please give at least two reasons.)

“I don’t know exactly what job I’ll choose,” Liam adds, “but I know it will involve protecting the environment and making the world a better place.”
1.How did Liam feel when he saw the terrible effects of a recent wildfire?
2.What machine did Liam develop to help stop wildfires?
3.Why does Liam want to use the AI system to protect nature?
4.What do you think of Liam? Why? (Please give at least two reasons.)

3.How did the writer and his friend use the shared bikes?
4.Of China’s “Four Great New Invention”, which one do you think makes your life better? Why? (Please give two reasons.)

1.What’s the name of the poem?
2.Why is the bamboo a symbol of strength and determination?
3.How can we build our inner strength, just like the strong bamboo?
4.What do you think of bamboo and why do you think so?

2.What did she start doing after the death of her husband?
3.What did her words “Buy the plane ticket!” mean?
4.Would you like to be a person like Nola Ochs? Why or why not? (Please give two reasons.)

2.How can teens make it easier to stay organized and record progress?
3.Why is volunteer work in the community highly rewarding?
4.What are you going to do to balance relaxation with productive activities in the coming winter vacation? Why? (Please give two reasons.)

All of the above makes tourism good for a long time. Thus, everyone can benefit, and people can continue to enjoy visiting these places in the future.
1.When is the World Tourism Day celebrated?
2.How many travelling companies are there in China in 2023?
3.What can tourists do to help develop tourism in the long run?
4.Do you want to develop tourism in your hometown? Why or why not? (Please write two reasons.)

2.Why was hope called a “rainbow of the mind”?

So, even though AR Smart Glasses and other cool tools can help with translations, the real joy and benefits of knowing a language come from speaking it fluently and understanding its culture.
1.What is the coolest feature of the AR Smart Glasses?
2.How can the AR Smart Glasses help people who get lost?
3.According to the writer, what is more important about learning a language?
4.Do you think the AR Smart Glasses are useful for your English learning? Why or why not? Please give two reasons.

Xiaohua, a hairdresser, has become very famous on the Internet. “I am the most common hairdresser. There is nothing special about me,” she said. “I have not considered raising the price for a haircut because the trust from people is satisfying enough.” Her WeChat is filled with messages from customers asking for a haircut, and she wants to tell them to be patient and wait until the online fame cools down.
